The Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 vs. the Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8

The Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 has been a key lens for me for the last year. It's one of the reasons I shoot more Sony now. The Samyang 35-150 f2-2.8 is a newer addition. It also comes in at less cost, which is nice.

I like the video, but I'm super confused by what you are trying to communicate in the middle of it... Are you saying you wished there was a similar (but smaller and lighter) lens made by sony that was constant f/2.8, and the reason you don't think that is an easy thing to do is that sony would have to license Tamron or Samyang build it? But you worry nobody would buy existing sony lenses anymore, so Tamron was forced to make this lens bigger? Hard to follow what you are trying to convey, what logic lead you to those conclusions, and what the relevancy is for the lenses compared in this video.
He's suggesting that he wishes that there was a smaller 35-150mm f/2.8 constant. It would be great if it could be a Tamron or Samyang, and thus more affordable. However, those manufacturers would have to get it approved by Sony. Sony would rather produce that lens themselves and sell it at a premium, rather than be undercut by the "budget" manufacturers. That's his own reasoning, whether it's true or not is debatable. But with Canon blocking third party lenses who knows. It's also worth noting though that Sony does own about a 15% stake in Tamron, and I'm sure has influence. If anything they could probably get Tamron to manufacture it, but badge it as a Sony (as long as it doesn't cost an uproar).
Good informative video! One thing that wasn't mentioned, and it is something that is of great importance to me ... when shooting at 150mm, and shooting all the way in at MFD, which of these suffers more from focus breathing? I ask because I often use lenses in this range at MFD, and at "full zoom", so naturally the focus breathing issue is a very significant factor when making a purchasing decision.
Thanks for these videos Taylor. As a Nikon Z user, I adore the z24-70 2.8s and z70-200 2.8s lenses…however, I’m intrigued by carrying one lens that covers much of that focal range (along with my trusty z 17-28 2.8). I know this 35-150 is still in development for the Z system, but curious if you think it will be in the same league as these Nikon z ‘holy trinity’ level lenses…based upon your experience with the Sony variant. Thanks man! Have a Big Turk for me…love Canadian candy!
I have the precursor to these lenses, the Tamron 35-150 2.8/4 and use it adapted on my R5. Works better than it did on my 5DIV. Have you tried either of these on an adapted Canon R body?
I got the tamron a few weeks ago and it’s amazing, my set up for weddings now is 35-150 on one body and 24 1.8 on the other 👌
Thank you! Nice, simple video.
Thanks for watching!
While I know it doesn't affect IQ, I was wondering how the dust on the internals are? My tamron 70-180 has maybe 2 specks after a couple of years' use.
Thanks for this review. Enough info to assist decision making. Grateful for your straightforward approach. Personally I might defer buying this kind of lens because of the weight/size in terms of both but will reflect. However, there is one significant difference between these two very similar lenses and that is the price. Here in the UK the price difference is almost £1,000 ($1,255). So my feeling right now - it is the Samyang I'd choose.
Great content 😊 Subscribed.
Hey Taylor! I've had the tamron for about a year and just got the exact same tilt shift issue, somehow I devastatingly only noticed after a recent wedding and have the same scenario with group shots... bride and groom in focus and the rest all falling off - did you manage to recover any those affected shots at all?
Fortunately I had wide shots of the same groupings on my second camera. Otherwise I’d probably do some head swaps from other photos. Retouchup or another similar service could help out
Fun video. Been really enjoying some of the OCF videos. I already knew the techniques, but the examples have resurrected my awareness of the possibilities. Thanks! Been using my new Samyang indoors and out at weddings, mitzvahs and corporate events for a couple months and quite like it. Lens creep doesn't bother me. Was concerned about ghosting, what with spots and floods at venues, but haven't seen it. Expected more veiling flare than with my Samyang primes, and yup, it's there when there's very strong backlight (e.g. subject in front of a large window in a skyscraper). I just change position or switch to a prime. On some celebration shots, I can actually use the veiling flare for a slightly hazy, romantic/surreal look. Mostly, though, it's contrasty enough and quite sharp, even wide-open or close to it. Unexpectedly, it's made me appreciate my f1.4 primes' capability for subject isolation even more. I always have the 35-150 on my a7IV and swap my 24/1.8, 35/1.4, 85/1.4 and 135/1.8 primes on my a7RV.
Will they be available ever for canon
I like the look of the Samyang more. The Tamron is clear and sharp etc but flatter. The separation of the subject/background is better with the Samyang. Which helps subjects pop
My vote to Samyang. Both are already big lenses. So a little bit bigger would not be significant.
I have some experience with Samyang. Their quality controls is really lacking and their resell worth degrades very quickly. Go Tamron is my advice.
The Tamron is coming for nikon Z in september 21th
I got a Tamron 35-150mm from Amazon warehouse. What's the best way to check if mine has a similar problem as yours?
Doesnt the samyang have the issue of when zooming it loses focus and the tamron doesnt? or has that been resolved? (edit, also can you use teleconverters on these?) (edit edit, Love your videos btw, thank you for making this comparison video)
Samyang was clear when they sent the lens that the firmware had just been updated (I think to 2.0 but I don’t remember exactly). So I’m guessing they’ve fixed the focus issue. I didn’t have any problems with video AF. Sadly I haven’t used any teleconverters with it so I can comment on that
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto Thank you for replying! and that helps my buying decision quite a bit since where I live they have a 400 difference. If you ever retest the focusing issue when zooming it would be neat to hear about it but this helps a lot. (edit, as for teleconverters it was just a shot in the dark, thank you again.)
Great practical comparison. We can look at charts all day and not really say if a lens is better than another in real life. Thank you for posting this!
Please what's the name of the screen you pulled up displaying those videos?
My Samyang copy had horrible autofocus issues so I swapped it for a new one. The second one had the same problem. Also, that lens creep on the Samyang was such a big problem for me too. Sent it back as well. So disappointed because I got the Samyang for $999 on Black Friday.
Hello Taylor, watching many of your videos and like them a lot. The Samyang 35-150 get almost bad reviews and boards (soft corners, bad against the sun and eye AF is not trustfully and bad in dark situations. But I want to give this lens a chance and when you shoot weddings successfully with it, it should be good enough, or?
I am very much looking at the Rokinon/Samyang version right now. Found the Rokinon on a black Friday sale for just over $1000 really cannot beat it for that price.
Check it out again! It’s down to $999 now (before the 10% discount!) at least on the samyang site, not sure about rokinon
Did anyone else pause when he just whipped up the green screen like that
I bought my Samyang 35-150 in BH for a thousand dollars, already updated to version 2, and I have nothing to complain about, the auto focus for videos and photos are excellent on my Sony a7iv. The material is not bad, the problem with Tamron is that if you pay 2000 thousand dollars and sell it you will lose a lot of money.
The thumbnails are just demonic by now 😂
Soon it will be 9 pixels of super smooth ball surface with smile
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto and I will click that bad boy
Samyang is Parfocal, Tamron isn't... Tamron has 6 year warranty, Samyang has 1 year warranty...
that thumbnails got some uncanny valley going on
I was considering getting the Tamron when the Samyang wasn't out yet... and I was considering it for soooooooo long, that the Samyang was rolled out in the meantime, and the price of the S. being 60-70% of the price of the T. (depends if there's "action" price on the T.), suddenly there was nothing to consider anymore :)
Yah I’m curious to see if tamron pricing changes at all over the next few months
My Samyang does not creep. Maybe they already fixed it. Never used the Tamron. Thanks for the video
Nice! Happy to hear that!
By the way, I would REALLY love this lens in an f4 or f5.0 version. The 4.3 range is great, but I would never shoot this any wider than f4, so why have all that extra size, weight, and expense if I am not going to need the wider apertures?
I think a lot of people shoot below f4
@@stevengrayston1715 oh yes, of course they do. Otherwise there wouldn't be a market for f2.8 lenses. But I'm concerned with how I shoot, not with how other photographers shoot.
that's what the 24-120 F4 (or 24-105 f4 depending on brand) is for, even though it doesn't quite have the same reach, 120 vs 150mm is not too big of a difference, and you get more wide-end. I don't need much on the wide end as my primary use is headshots, portraits, dog agility, horses, and stage performances where the fast aperture helps keep shutter speeds high enough. I wish the sigma 50-150 2.8 was remade into a FF lens, but the 35-150 will likely be my next lens.
@@MichaelSatoshiGarcia oh yeah I already have the Canon 25-105mm L series lens. But of course for what I shoot that range is nowhere near as useful as a 35-150mm would be.
Nikon has that checked, 24-120 f4 I used it 90% of the time. Ok it is not 150 but it is not much of a difference.
Well speaking with experience from my degree in physics and handful of engineering design classes, I don't think Tamron or Samyang made the lenses larger than intended to appease Sony. The 35-150 range is equivalent to a 24-105 lens on an apsc body, they merely scaled up the geometry for full frame. It's not a radically new design, the lens has the architecture of a 24-105 lens. Stick one of these on a medium format camera and that's close to what you're going to get. As for the variable aperture, I bet they aimed for an f2.8 but realized a constant aperture was more difficult to do than having f2 on the wide end. Likely would have added weight and complexity to limit the wider aperture, or limit it in software like the 28-75 lenses, or just leave it as is, f2-2. 8.
Interesting. So it would be more challenging and more expensive to let less light in?
@@TaylorJacksonPhotoI think it is not about amount of light but about the design of the constant aperture. Constant(wide) aperture is hard to construct.
I feel like my team lost the Taylor Jackson Super Bowl. 😂. I am/am not surprised. I have the Tamron and I love it. Your videos and your reasoning behind using the Tamron played a part in me purchasing the Tamron. The Samyang wasn’t out yet but I am extremely happy with the Tamron. I have used the Tamron for portraits and recently for travel on a cruise and I couldn’t be happier. I am still a hobbyist and not making big bucks so I appreciate Samyang providing a lower price option. I also appreciate Tamron producing a unconventional focal length zoom lens. I haven’t had any issues with my Tamron but if I ever needed to replace it, I would easily buy another Tamron. It’s been around long enough to see any/all issues where the Samyang is relatively new. After watching a ton of your videos, I see that although you are very successful, you are price conscious and I respect that. Whether that was your reasoning to choose the Samyang or not. The funny thing is that researching the Tamron 35-150mm is what brought me to your channel. Now I will have to move on and find another Tamron 35-150mm champion to follow so I can continue….😂😂. J/K Thanks for the great videos, awesome tips and honesty.
If you happen to go to Japan ever, you can buy the Tamron at Yodobashi for the price of the Samyang in the US (the samyang price is still roughly the same there tho). I did this as I trusted the Tamron brand more, but still couldn't justify such a vast price difference.
Taylor practically lives in Japan nowadays. 😂
@jaytcapinpin hahah not wrong.
Samyang :-)
Samyang for the win
Do you not find yourself battling ghosting with bright backlit sun on these lenses? I've tried the Samyang 35-150, and it was atrocious. Almost ruined an engagement shoot with green dots all over the model's face. Is the Tamron better in this regard?
Interesting. I didn’t notice any problems. Or if I did I moved them out of the area that was important
End rokinon 35-150mm ? is the same ?
Same company. Samyang is their USA brand Rokinon is their china brand.

When will they to 28-50mm f2 😢
Why not use a 35 prime?
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto yes I currently do use 35/50 primes but would love a smaller canon 28-70 on the Sony. I don’t need more than 50 really. 24-50mm would be even better.
I don’t trust Samsung reliability (for any of their lenses). Tamron seems to be more reliable.
Samyang is just so value for what u pay
The Samyang pulls in air when you zoom out which will in time result in collecting dust
that's every lens LOL! if there's suction, there's always a chance of dust sneaking in, no matter the resistance
The difference is warranty.
Haha true. Tamron was good to work with.
I'm planning to buy this focal length, but which to buy? I'm confused. Tamron is 145k here in Bangladesh and Samyang is 130k.
They’re both similar optically. I have a comparison video on the channel
Tamron 35 150 ; 145k new?

Don't buy another Samyang 35mm, don't buy another Samyang 35mm! Dammit! So I bought the 35mm f1.4 from Samyang and love it. I think, for it's price, it's amazing. But it's a bit hefty and I wanted a nice fun cheap walk around lens for walks and cityscapes and guess who has a really nice cheap 35mm f2.8? Samyang! Which i got even cheaper because it was second hand And now I'm looking for a good wedding photography all-rounder...dammit!!!
I personally love my Samyang 35/1.8. It's amazing considering how small it is but sharp at the same time.
@@Eihei I have the f1.4 and f2.8 and honestly have no regrets. I didn't even know there was a f1.8 as well haha
@@t1lt252525 oh, the 2.8 is a really awesome pancake lens, it's really cool as well!
Man, when will canon let 3rd parties use the RF mount?
When their sales start to decline more to Sony and Nikon and they panic a bit
Gosh this thing is heavy the Tamron….more than 1kg
nikon already has that lens
I have the Tamron 35-150 for Canon. I had one of my friends in Japan who is a member of Yakuza lets just say Tamron was very happy to make one copy for me when my friend told them to. Bad news now I have some Ninja Turtles calling my phone saying they are coming for me.
Warranty In Canada, Tamron: 10 year warranty done in Canada Samyang: 1 year ship to US repair without shipping coverage
That still true for tamron? They brought tamron Canada to tamron America’s in the usa last year I think
I prefer tamron
Why is this?
