    • Rooting for you from the USA. I was a Chelsea fan back in those days, as an American boy visiting in England for a couple of years. But I had nothing but respect for Leeds, in that historic FA Cup final in 1970. It will be good for English football to see Leeds contending at the top levels again.

  • The good old days when you had mostly British players who stayed loyal to their team and apart from leeds and liverpool's dominant years we had 24 teams all capable of winning the league. Now success is bought by 3-4 teams which makes the premier league the most boring league in the world. In fact all the top leagues around the world are won by the same old faces. I use to love watching Chelsea, I'd buy the standard at the train station on the way home and be over the moon that our win put us up into 7th and be in contention for an inter cities cup place.. Every game was a big event, no formalities, football was so competitive and exciting then. Chelsea beating Leeds to win the 1970 fa cup was like winning the world cup. I was 14 and went to both games, saved up my paper round money to do it. Great days.

    • Similar to my memories. I was also 14 at the time, an American living in Oxford. Oxford United were my team (Ron Atkinson, of all people, was the captain), but Chelsea were my First Div team. I didn't get to go to the game (even though I had a "paper round" as well -- we call it a "paper route" here), but I was glued to the set for the entire spectacle. Bonetti certainly redeemed himself, after his less-than-spectacular showing against W. Germany in the World Cup.

  • Happy memories - remember watching this as a 10 year old. Star Soccer on a Sunday in the Midlands with one of my favourite commentators, the late great Hugh Johns. The Leeds side at this time were phenomenal, I loved they way Leicester were caught on the hop lining up the wall for a Lorimer special, only to be outwitted by Giles and Bremner. But the highlights for me have to be the two utterly brilliant Leicester goals and that great save by Shilton at the end. Thank you for posting.

    @johnnyonenote376@johnnyonenote3764 жыл бұрын
    • Saw Shilton make a great save at Elland Road the previous season from a chip by Giles. Great keeper. Harvey was good, but if Clough had signed Shilton as he wanted, we might have won the European Cup, dodgy ref or not.

      @normanby100@normanby1003 жыл бұрын
    • @@normanby100 I was brought up in Derby and I remember that just after the 1973 England match against Poland, Leicester came to the Baseball Ground at the weekend and I was standing behind Shilton, who was taking a goal kick at the Osmaston Road end. Old boy with a cloth cap and Woodbine pikes up...."Come on, gerron wiv it Shilton....you think you're brilliant don't ya? But you let that bugger go through on Winsdy..." I still think to this day that Norman (a great player in his own right RIP) should have booted that ball out near the halfway touchline ! Also saw Johnny Giles on a very wet and muddy Derby pitch, chip this ball to perfection and it was (agonisingly) just out of reach of Colin Todd's jump, with Alan Clarke (sniffer) already round the back and waiting to pounce at the edge of the area, clear through on goal. No problem for Toddy - he just caught it with both hands and rolled it to the ref ! Took a booking but I think it would have been more than that in this day and age. Yep, I liked Dave Harvey a lot but Shilton was something else over a very long career. All time favourite for me was Gordon Banks though.

    • Yes Hugh Johns was an outstanding commentator. He was the commentator for ITVs coverage of the 1966 World Cup final and did an excellent job as usual it's just he got overshadowed by the equally brilliant, but different Kenneth Wolstenhulme and his legendary "they think it's all over "line on the BBC coverage.

  • I've always been a Leeds United supporter and had the pleasure of watching the team from the late 60's onwards. Leeds were the team every side wanted to beat most, due to the quality of the side. But even back then it was usually a choice for the title from Leeds, Liverpool and Arsenal, so when you see the usual 4 or 5 teams fighting it out for the top places its nothing new. Yes there were the odd times other teams won the league but the named 3 were the teams to beat along with man utd.

To make matter worse, my area of Yorkshire could only get Geordie shit Tyne Tees with eternal wastes of space Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough instead of Leeds in their pomp. They briefly had a decent commentator in Kenneth Wolstonholme but he didn't last long as I had to ensure Roger Tames. Matters reached an all-time peak of farciality when an armed gunman was roaming the North Yorkshire market town of Malton in 1982. None of Malton's residents could find any information on the local news because it was being reported by Tyne Tees who didn't cover Yorkshire. When all the so called big clubs get brought down to the same level as other teams then fair deal,not 4 clubs from one country,one club only. Certainly the Bloomfield side was the best footballing Leicester side up until the Kante/Mahrez/Vardy era. At least four of the side playing here would have walked into the 2015-16 side - possibly five. Worthy, Weller, Whitworth, Shilts and one of the great undervalued players - Lennie Glover.
