This $300 Watch Strap is Made from Scraps
We had a friend come to visit who needed his fake vegetable tanned leather watch strap replaced, so we used scrap leather to make him a handmade leather watch strap.
Handmade leather watch straps are small, but very labor intensive - at our normal rate it would cost well over $300 to make these for sale!
A big thanks to our sponsor Weaver Leather for sponsoring this video. Without their tools and support we wouldn't be able to make all of our leather crafting videos :)
How much would you pay for a handmade leather watch strap?
Between £15 - £20 for handmade leather watch straps. That's about $20 - $25. I certainly wouldn't pay $300 for one unless it was attached to a very nice watch.
I've paid probably up to $30 for a nice watch strap.
@@Zeit142 I know but just have a look on ebay for example at handmade leather watch straps, even for a pretty good quality one you'll only pay about £30. I make leather goods as a hobby so understand what goes into making them and although this watch strap looks pretty good quality and he put a lot of work into it, it's just not worth more than about £30, £40 tops if it was for a custom order.
Corter Leather 45$ NOT 300$ wtf?
I don’t own a watch but sadly :(
I have been wanting to make my self a new watch ban for some time, you did a great job, once I see it done I know I can also do it, from one leather crafter to another.
Neat technique, including the bevel cuts for the mated leather ends of the keeper and buckle strap. I'll have to keep this in mind when it comes time to replace the bands on some of my watches!
I like how this guy didn’t make unnecessary sound effects at if it were an asmr video and it was just calm great job on it all👍
I would pay $300 for a decent pair of leather boots.$60 for a pretty nice leather belt, and probably no more than $50 for a watch strap. If it was a really nice bund strap that just really completed the look of a certain watch, might pay $75-$85. Now this is a nice looking strap, but anyone that would pay $300 for a leather strap that didn't have some very unique custom aspects to it is out of their minds. With that said, I understand the purpose of the video, and you make a nice strap. Looks to be good quality, and like it would be very comfortable in a very short break in period. Thank you for sharing. By the way, how long does it take you to make something like that from beginning to end?
probaby 3-4 hours for a project that small
Especially with all the defects in it. No way that would sell for $300.
i have this one
@@xatoor yup
$300 is the price of the watch.... not the strap...
Just made a set for a guy for 90 buck, he put them on a 10 dollar watch. To each his own i guess.
Total Mayhem Leather hahaa
Lol
@Maze to confusion honestly i dont know ive never owned one i always buy nylon bands, the only leather ones i own are ones ive made.
A $10 watch and a $1,000 watch both tell the same time, but a strap is what carries that watch for years. It's a fashion statement, and quality is what makes that statement.
Im making mine for an Apple Watch. $300 watch with $0 leather bands!
ouuuch, when the scissor tip scratched the leather at 4:15
I know right?
"$300"
It’s a vegetable tanned leather, any little scratches will show up but they will come out just by rubbing the leather
i gate you
do you watch this on 4k or activated your Sharingan?
I love watching people on youtube who have mastered thier craft, you make leatherworking look easy and natural like it's second nature.
This was the least intimidating watch band video I've seen. And the end result is wonderful. You always make it look so easy!
What was the other? Trying to learn haha
This is really inspiring. You're the reason why I started making videos too. Thank you.
i really thought you messed up not having the buckle glued and stitched in, then I realized that it went in with a spring post like the other side, well done sir.
Fantastic! Wanting a watch strap I couldn't find is what got me into leatherwork. I love it! I just decided to make it myself. Not as easy as it looks, but I got there eventually!
You're not kidding - they're so hard to make! I've only made a handful my whole career, I tend to stay away because there are so many amazing makers that specialize in them. They sure are fun to battle through every now and again though :)
Y conseguiste aceite de mink?
@@jaimefuentesv7369 Sí, pero no es necesario.
Another awesome project. Thank you for sharing
Really beautiful. Some nice techniques. Thanks for sharing.
Want to thank you all for your help on making leather watch bans.
You make it look so easy
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship
Yay, a video with hammering, I thought they’d been disxontinued😳❤️
I have 4 finals this week and yet I’m here watching how to make watch strap
WOW SIMPLY INCREDIBLE, I LOVE IT THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS AMAZING VIDEO
Thank you very much for the teaching. Greetings from Brazil!
Perfect, beautiful, magnific job!!!
good
Just a little advice: when you lock the stitch it's better to do it at the very ende where you have the springbar, and instead of going through both layers of leather you go through only 1 per each end of the tread, so you can make a knot that you can hide in between the strap layers
could you tell me the thickness of the leather used inside of the strap?
Love your attention to detail👍🏼 keep up the phenomenal content
Saw this video, subbed & got myself a starter kit. So stoked to try recreate something like this!
This is a master class in both strap making and KZhead video production. You make the strap part look so effortless, and I love that there is no chatty exposition here and the banners integrated into the scene with props rather than edited in later.
Good job thanks for that.❤
I believe i will just make my own watch strap thank you.
Really beautiful work
Very nice 👍🏻Great leather work and video too 👍🏻
And now I want to try and make one myself 🤔
Beautiful strap! Love the design. How thick is that leather that you used?
BEAUTIFUL! Thank you 🙏
I am impressed. Beautiful job!
I am a hobbiest leatherworker, and since I am new to this craft, I absulutely love love love these videos to inspire me and show me technique. Thank you! Your work is fantanstic and right up my alley for the kind of work I like to do. Regarding using Weldwood or Barge, I despise the nasty and toxic odors that come from these glues. Are there any other options out there? Have you tried any water-based contact cements? Keep up the great work!
Thanks :) There are many different water-based glues that can be used with leather - Aquilim, Craft-sha, etc (you can even use Elmers school glue in a pinch!) they're just not as strong as solvent-based cements so you need to work a differently with them and you can't use them structurally. Another option is to use a respirator while gluing if you want to continue using the stronger glues without worrying about fumes, or having a little glue station outdoors so the fumes dissipate easily
Corter Leather Thanks. I figured those were my options, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.
I am just getting started in leather craft. I can see that all these comments are years old. But I just found them! This particular channel has been my favorite to watch. I am getting so many inspirations from these. Also, living with two young grandsons, this is a FANTASTIC way to relax with headphones on. So relaxing! Thanks for your channel and thank you for this awesome content!!!
If I could give you each time 3x likes at the same time I would. I really appreciate your videos. Thank you.

You do such beautiful work! Seems to be a natural touch for you! In comparison mine looks so bad. Your stitching and gluing and folding.. all of your lines are just fantastic! Thank you for sharing so many great videos, i try and try to be as good.. I’ll keep practicing it is such a satisfying art form!
Beautiful, amazing. Love these. Thank you so much
Thank you for the tutorial
What thread do you use for the stiching? Nice video!
Your sponsor should be proud! 👏 I'm shopping their edge bevelers now 👍
Just sat mesmerised with a cup of tea, loved it !
This was awesome! How thick was the leather used?
A watch strap, and a good one, too! ;) Not exactly according to the art of strap making, but you did have some interesting ideas, like attaching the loop. Funny how you put the watch up side down on your wrist ;)
Thank you for the video
Some of the finest, exquisite, robust, perfect, and excellent leather products u have my dude
Beautiful craftsmanship as always. Dang you really triggered some folks. 🤔😄 My opinion: well worth the price tag. With the time, and your years of experience and the quality of materials..... well worth it. And as a side note: just because it came from your “scrap” bin does NOT mean it is subpar leather, it means that it was left over from another project and simply waiting to be used on another. I have never seen you guys use anything but top shelf leather. You go on with your bad self Corter! Unless they are paying your bills, pay those haters no mind.
Thank you for the lovely comments every week :) We're fortunate tto have amazing folks like you watch our movies and the conversations are usually super polite, I think it's good to have open discussions about price. It's an important part of the craft if you're looking to make a living out of it. And 100% right on the "scrap" -- we love showing that almost any piece of leather can be used to make something beautiful regardless of size!
Corter Leather you are most welcomed. I agree, it should be more openly discussed. Pricing is so subjective, I just saw an advertisement for a simple unstitched “ leather” belt proudly advertised for $995.00. I typically sell mine for $90 - &150. If those folks can sell theirs at that price point I am genuinely happy for them. You have to figure in overhead, cost of materials, the market your selling to and you have to be paid for your time, ability and years of dedication to your craft. There’s no way I could justify charging what someone like a Jim Linnell or Bruce Cheaney would charge. I think demystifying it is so important.
It's the scrap watch that needs replacement, nice strap though !
Beautiful craftsmanship.
So much better! Awesome work!
If I was making a strap for myself I would have made just two length adjustment holes. One for summer and the other for winter.
Same here. Though I guess it looks more normal with more holes
$300? People...just buy a ColaReb or Fluco. You won't regret it, and you'll be saving hundreds.
Superb quality. I'm a collector and know what a difference a quality strap makes. Subscribed!
Beautiful
Great video, very nice watch strap. One more thing, my OCD is driving me crazy, please, please, please sharpen your scissors ")
$300 can get you some goodyear welted Alan Edmonds. Those have far better leather, more of it, and probably just as much hand work. I'd pay about $150 for a strap like that (more if it was exotic leather).
That’s strap looks phenomenal and will look even better with age. Nice video!!
I want to start a business making watch bands and came across your video. Mine is a buckle-free design. I loved your handiwork and it will help with my design quite a bit.
Great video. The pattern does not appear to be at the 'GET THE PATTERN HERE' link. Can this be corrected?
Well.. lots of rich folks visit and live on the cape... so $300 for a watch strap might seem like nothing... but that is awful steep pricing there!!!
Love this video. May I ask how did you manage the screws (sorry don’t know the correct name) to come out. In the video they are completely in the band. Thank you for your help. Just a beginner :p
"A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing." - Oscar Wilde
Description says Get the pattern here but it's not available at the link. Am I missing it?
Beautiful!!!
I love watching a craftsman at work
Would love one in Red Tochigi to match my wallet. 😍😍😍
Not a $300 strap, not even close, but looks pretty good
karlma lone yeah, more like just for craft
JP JP how do you figure?
i think it is the price of the watch, $300 watch with strap from scraps
@@ilyasali1733 if this exact band was made from a luxury brand, it would be hundreds, he used high quality leather and it was hand made. The selling points that make something cost way more than it should. The cost doesn't come from the materials, as he wants to show you, its fairly inexpensive for the material compared to what they'd most likely charge you.
even handmade Shell Cordovan strap sells for 150$.
Wow! Great job!
Thanks bro, I tried to do it according to your scheme. A very beautiful strap is obtained with a thickening!
It also depends of the leather. Cordovan, real alligator or croc, etc. The highest I paid was around $ 120.00. My average is between $25-60
The situation, when strap cost more than a watch. )
Beautiful job!
Beautiful process as always.. So common sense clever.. Might I ask what mm stitching prongs you used for this?
$300 is absolutely ludicrous! I don't even charge $300 for a hand cut, hand stitch and hand CARVED full bodied pistol holster!
It sounds like you're not charging enough for your work!
Great looking strap you make it look so easy but it obviously isn't
Very nice band! Do you happen to have measurement guides for creating a pattern or will you have a pattern available for purchase?
Wow!! Nice video and nice watch band, I did at one time own a watch exactly like that one.
When i saw the Nixon watch at end i was like.. REALLY?
Ashvith Shetty damn bro calm yourself
That strap made a $80 watch look like a $1000.
Yeah Nixon's are over priced fashion watches so I guess over price straps would be perfect
@@daviddoyle2738 Pfff, not even close to 500.
It's a perfect watch to match his poorly made strap. Just an amateur leather DIY guy with decent shooting equipments and video editing skills.
A Hermes watch strap is cheaper... that being said still very informative and excellent videos all around
Now, that's really cool!
Beautiful work. The skills, craftsmanship, and time is so well worth the price. I see people complaining about the price of $300. Everyone has skills they aquire over time and the experience is what you're playing for. No comparison to Chinese mass production stuff.
It just me... or the strap is in the wrong order?
Japanese usually attach the clasp piece at 6 o'clock Swiss brands attach the clasp at 12hrs. I prefer the Japanese method, if you wear a shirt with a breast pocket and your hand is close to your face ( smoking /cellphone / adjusting your sunglasses / picking or scratching your nose etc. ) the watchband can get stuck behind the rim of the pocket after your hand comes down, so the Japanese method is juist a bit more practical for nose pickers 😎
The straps being the wrong way around is really bothering me after an overall perfect video!!
im glad you've notice..
Now I really appreciate leather watch bands. Excellent vid
such a beautiful strap for that watch...
Here is a dilemma: 300$ for Seiko Sarb alike watch and .... 300$ for a strap?! With all respect, the maximum I'd pay for the strap is 30-40$
Beautiful fckin strap, its worth more than the watch
$300 that's the funniest thing I've heard all week
Thanks man, great video.
eh, its a $30-50 strap. No exotic material. No tapering or appreciable craftsmanship. Granted, slap a premium brand's logo on it, someone will pay $300
It is handmade. It would cost at least $100 in labor.
@@jonjo2598 go to etsy or ebay and you'll see most handmade leather watch straps are in the $20-$60 range.
The leather Apple Watch bands are all hundreds of dollars, which is why he’s labelled it a “$300” dollar watch band. It’s essentially a critique of the pricing.
Jon Jo $100 in labor? Are you insane?
This is the comment I was looking for. Really? $300? Come on now. Hand made to their liking. But a little bulky and plain for me. I just spent $40 on a strap that is much more luxurious than this
Remind me again why this is $300?
30 $
Hi quality leather, good skills, and time for manufacture.
raksh9 i feel like even with the quality of leather the amount used would not come close to $300. Its also a watch band. Compared to other thing this takes less time and obviously i cant do that ands its good but $300?
It was probably a typo.... should be $30 watch strap on a $3 watch
You’re work is excellent
Ótimo trabalho obrigado por compartilhar um pouco de sua experiência...um abraço.
Very beautifully made. ($300 is a big stretch though, but I'm sure you'll find buyers at $50-$75)
Agreed, I do some leather work for my wood/metal works, and 300 is a bit far for sure. xD But then again people buy overpriced things all the time, it looks nice though.
Thanks! unfortunately they take 6 hours to make so we'd go out of business charging that little (which is why we do not usually offer them for sale) this was a special order :)
$300 is unreal price. I sell similar for $31
@@Corter Hi, I love your craftmanship ... really nice work. After watching the video I thought 300$ is expensiv, but 6 hours of work puts it in perspective again. @all the haters! I bet the strap will last for many years!
@@Corter I hear you. Without scale, lower labor costs, and automation, it makes no business sense, unless you are Hermes.
$300 for a watch strap is nothing compared to some of the ones out there just plain leather sometimes into 1000 dollars some of you complain and you wouldn't give 20 $30 for it that's fine and you don't have a hundred fifty, $200,000 watch look at the ones for Panerai or better yet a watch strap from upper tier name brand, same leather used I guess it's what you want to spend how it's advertised and what you want to put it on guess you don't want to put a $500 watch strap on a $20 Casio watch
Good work
Handmade is Old Skool Classic & Timeless Wish you added the buckle install also✌️😎
$300 more overpriced than HODINKEE straps 😂
Harsh. But fair. Lol
Nixon. Good watch. Bad President.
😂
Nixon is a garbage-tier watch not worthy of this sort of effort and attention.
Always there~ quality does matter
a master at work is a joy to observe 👍
