Being is Slavery, Nothingness is Freedom (Sartre's "Being and Nothingness", FIRST LECTURE)

Sartre: Consciousness has the capacity for nothingness which gives rise to freedom, choices, decisions, responsibility, authenticity, and, ultimately, self-identity. Being requires the involvement of the world, its objects, and rigid roles. It leads to dissonant and conflictive "bad faith" projects and inauthenticity.

  • I have experience nothingness, in a NDE, after a car crash, in that experience I enter in a black hole here everything disappeared even my memories, my sensations, my body, my images of me, even me, then, after this, all came back outside of me, like a panoramic view, I was observing like with a minds eye, but was nothing, I didn't see nothing apart of my life, no angels or others people, nobody received me on that side, and I for the kind of experience I thought I was done, dead because it was not on the body anymore, that was 13y ago, and I literally touched something so dramatic and so beautiful, now a can talk with have rivers of tears run through my face, waters of love, completely. So I say, there are those who are fortunate to die and have another opportunity to live, and it was a choice.

    • I agree with what your sentiment implies and what Sam has to say. I have figured that it has to do with: short attention spans, inability to follow the complexity for usually an hour, he does not have gimmicky thumbnails, and why tolerate any of that when you can find ten minute videos confirming your less informed bias...😕 Unfortunate because he is a wellspring of knowledge and delivers it in very digestible chunks. It's easier to space out on tik tok than it is to discover your own depth 🤷‍♀️

  • Well spoken you! Emptiness or nothingness is just fine as long as part of the emptying of one self, self negation, is also the emptying of negative emotion. (emotional self regulation :-)

  • Really fortunate to come upon this jewel of a video almost said discourse 😂 Will have to watch it a few times I'm not even halfway and my mind is blown . This is the stuff . This nothingness . Shunya .that all the messiahs and scriptures I'm familiar with keep harping about . And it's a very complex thing to understand because as they said it's beyond mind . Like you have to be able to step out of your mental Maya .the zero state explained in language I understand. (Not always the complete impact of the meaning . This is an actual onslaught from the moment it started. . The man just took off straight into orbit . Thank you so very much . There's nobody you can really ask or talk about this stuff . It is difficult to have a conversation without getting lost and distracted by having to contextualize the question. Keep going back to the abc of it and I think I've had enough. Thank you

  • I believe that Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are the practical and proper guide to freedom. Being aware of no external influence, is it my ego preventing their integration?

  • Dr Sam Vaknin, I have enjoyed learning for you. Your knowledge and channel has been a life saver for me. It not only saves my life, but it points me towards my freedom. It has been and still is a journey. I am very grateful to you. I have a question. Dr Vaknin, when a narcissist parent horribly physically abuses only one child in the family is he performing the cycle of separation from the same sex narcissist parent? Is this cycle performed only on an adult partner or can it be a child? Especially when the child is the same sex as his narcissist Mather.

    • This is possible only if the child is parentified.

  • I don’t see anything profound in people taking on what is called bad faith projects or external roles. As I perceive it: Taking on roles are the means by which we all survive in the set of living arrangements we find ourselves in. If we denied our environment we could cease to exist physically or lose power to act in that environment, both these out comes would work against the discovery of self. So entering in roles and act them out for the purpose of finding in them the true self and expressing self though and above these roles is a better project, this is the glory of an ordinary life.

    • Yes true . The mind needs limits and contexts . Some comparative before and after and also external recognition to confirm . We need witnesses to validate our own actions and if the actions were indeed productive . It's pretty fragile don't you think to live in that state of suspicion . You suspect yourself of having done anything if you don't have it reflected back at you in some way . That you made a ripple in the matrix at all. That's why it pains us to be negated because our self assurance is gathered from other people's verdicts . It's a widespread problem . A person in solitary confinement starts losing the self because there are no other to validate his existence. Will you cease to exist ? It's worth a look see .
