In this video I replace the disa valve o-ring on a M54B25 out of a 2003 Bmw 525i. This car was showing codes p0171 and p0174. The o-ring can be found at advance auto parts (part # 35489), it is a water outlet o-ring for a 91-94 ford probe.
The torque values can be found at: (www.e46fanatics.com/forum/show...)

Do you realize you're the only one I've seen go into some nice detail (especially how to properly remove the connector!). Nice job thank you.
+joesgarage618 Thanks, No problem!
Totally agree!!!!
If you couldn't figure out how to open the spring loaded connector, do yourself a favour and do not ever work on any car
I didn't know that there was an off-the-shelf o-ring that works with the DISA. Cool tip! I just repaired a car with P0171 and P0174, it turned out to be a bad CCV valve.
just changed mine with the same part number and it worked.. that ford water out let O ring worked and it did fit my disa Valve with no isues . very happy my car passed the smog test today so thank you for sharing your video.
Excellent video. Hit the spot, it's exactly what I needed to clear the P0171 and p0174 codes on my 2003 X5. Good stuff, and thank you
You rock, my seal was practically non existent this video along with part number helped me fix it and pass emissions. More BMW video's would be great (temp gauges not accurate, CCV bypass etc...
This just fixed my vacuum leak that was causing a misfire code! Been searching for it for a while now!
Thanks for the video! Just an fyi-O’Reilly carries the same o-ring. Same PN. We don’t have Advanced near by.
Gg dawg I needed that
Great video, extremely useful as always. Still didn't fix my vacuum leak, but at least I know this o-ring won't be a future problem!
Another great video, informative and well explained. Your vids can never get to old, just like the classic E39's :) I'm from the UK, over here the BMW dealerships are as cheap if not cheaper than online parts. My local dealership as even put me down as a trader just so they can give me an even better price !
o the only guy that give more details for this motor nice work
Recently put a Disa kit through my old 2000 318i, the older model disa.. worked a dream. Cost $47 saved me $700! South Australia
Man I just want to say thank you bro. You saved me a ton of money. 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for these videos! Incredibly helpful and generous to share.
thank you so much for this video and the part number for the o-ring it helped a lot subbed
Thank you, sir! You are a big help! especially with that O-ring substitute!
Very helpful and informative video. Greetings from Germany and thank you very much.
I followed your clear instructions and I achieved excellence. Thanks again to you and your lady for all your videos. You save us so much money but more importantly, headaches!!!
Thanks for sharing this video with us. I love your video's.
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing all your expertise!
Great detailed video bro... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This sorted out the problem in my 325ci
Thanks, great video....fixed the problem
Nice! I wish I had found this video and part number before I bought a rebuild kit just for that o-ring.
Was yours hissing? Trying to find a vacuum leak on my friends 325
Amazing video. Thank you so much for sharing.
Great information I was looking for a gasket!
Great Video, helped me out a lot. thank you!
So does the o ring have to slide in the intake manifold or should it be pressed against only?
Thanks for the guide. Torque settings are: 10 Nm (7 Ft/lbs) is what I’ve read around so not much at all. Correct me if I’m wrong!
Jason, do you recommend doing the rebuild kit with bolt going in reverse as a preventive measure?
When you buy a DISA rebuild kit, what is the screw/bolt for? You get a new flap, mating control rod (with the hex flats), rotating pin, and this screw/bolt. But I have no idea what the intention is for this bolt. Any insight on this?
@ShopLifeTV 2:22 - if the flap is missing or broken & not working right, would that cause a problem to the idle or valve or even the engine? And can it still be used without the flap even if it is properly sealed in with the O-Ring?
Can you smoke the 2.5L e46 with a smoke source through the brake vacuum hose? Or will one of these gate valves prevent the smoke from getting to the entire top of the engine?
Could this be the cause o a rough idle/rpms won't go over 3k. Cars on limp mode this disa valve it's very noisy I've checked egr icv 2ndary air pump O2 sensor still having this issue
Thanks for the video.
I am about to check/replace the boot to my throttle body and I have to remove the DISA to get at it - is it worth doing this ring as well?
Hi, Thanks for the video. Just what I've looking for. I have lots of codes related to air/fuel. But the line is : CC DME: Plausibility, idle speed (leakage air). Is this to do with Disa, Idle control valve? Thanks.
Oh you already made the Disa fix video... :D
I noticed the orange oring does not go in all the way. I brought a brand new disa valve and it came with a new o ring on it. But when i put it on is it supposed to go all the way in.
Thank you!
Saving lives in 2022
You Rock Dude
Hi! I have really bad MPG but no fault codes. Do you think it's the Disa valve? Also when I start the e46 the steering is rock hard. As soon as I press the gas pedal the steering pump (new) works, but a second before that happens it's as if the Disa flap makes a moving sound. What should I do?
Nice video bro, very informative. I just wanted to know if it solved the problem with car
I want to know the size of the 0-ring you used.
Quick question... after I replaced the DISA Valve with a brand new Genuine BMW unit... there remains a fault: 0281E Disa Activation Final Stage... I deleted the fault multiple times and then someone said to leave it be and it would go away after a few drive cycles. Are you familiar with this situation and what was the solution? I tested the new DISA and it works fine...instantly activates when I plug it in while ignition is on.
good job
It seals better when it's installed in the last groove I've noticed it doesn't flush properly when I apply this oring in the original groove
I love this tip!!!!!
Is it identical to a M52TUB28? Looking to do a DISA rebuild. Are they the same parts?
love you man. If im ever in the usa ill stop by with a basket of belgian chocolates.
Why did you replace the gasket? Does bad gasket affect anything? Thanks
What is the difference between the large flap and the short flap on the diza valve?
What would be the next step after this? A throttle body gasket?
Thanks man!
hi. i have a m54 3.0 e46. i took out disa and looking at the serial number looks like its for 2.5l How bad it is driving the wrong disa? messing only the fuel economy?
Dude you are the shit keep it up
The disa valve on my car which is a 325i 2002 M54 E46 they say that a ring cannot be replaced. Is this true also I just replaced it it was functioning fine tested it outside the car with vacuum and Power but it still comes up not active on my c110 creator? Can you help me?
Do u think this part would fit a 2005 X3 E83 Disa valve.
I got that part # for my 2002 325i and it looks much too small? Any? Can it be stretched?
This fixed my slow rpm and rich o2 sensor codes!!! P0171/ 2882 inpa code
A flathead precision screwdriver is excellent for scraping the old o-ring.
Did this resolve the lean codes on this car?
Hey do you know if these o ring will fit on the 04 325 Xi
So the ring will seem like it’s too big. Hence lubricating and back and forth cinching down the screws. It’ll go in. Take your time and add something to lube it.
Torque to 10 nm or 7 ft lbs. it’s understandably super low so hand tightening until the screws stop is fine, as you do it.
What if cold start the E46 and it starts making Poppin noises in the engine and then in 30 seconds it goes back to normal... What can it be?
Awesome work man I bought the kit with the O ring for like 40$ n did it myself.. My next project is going to be installing new headlights cuz the original ones are looking rough.. Any vids on that? I have a 2004 325i 4 door and do u suggest I buy spyder headlights?? Thanks
This is where I bought the kit www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01GSSAWVY/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Made my car run smoothly and powerful
How do you test it to make sure its working
Your videos are great but I always wonder, how do you have your own shop with no partnership or like you said, had any knowledge on how to fix cars. Make a video talking about how the shop came to life! Very interested to know. It's inspiring especially being I'm the same age as you
+Vijay Thackoordath I will be making a video about this shortly! Thanks for watching!
My god, removing the Oring is a freak'n nightmare. I'm doing this right now. I took a break, looking for tips on the removal process...and I'm just guessing this in my p171/174 problem. Nothing else really stands out. I have a 2001 525i. I call it my hooptie the clearcoat/paint is peeling, front lower spoiler is pretty much broken in half (way too many high curb hits, not to mention the low dips that drags the lower portion of the spoiler. I'm just basically trying to keep it mechanically running. As soon as I get rid of one engine code and another one tends to pop up and plague me. I don't even drive it that much, easily less than 10k miles a year, probably under 5k.
Υπάρχει περίπτωση να τραβάει αέρα από το oring της disa σαν αυτό που άλλαξες φίλε μου??
Great video. Where can I get a Disa valve rebuild kit?
+pearlmcp Thanks! Look up German Auto Solutions, they have the best kit.
What is the disa valve o ring part # for m54b30 engine. ? 3.0L.
01 bmw 2.5 all new coils and plugs can’t get it to stop skipping what could be the problem
I'd love to see how to replace a valve cover and rebuid the vanos on an e46!
nathrak Ill upload a video on this as soon as I get in a car that needs it!
And/or the e39/m54. I assume the m54 is also in the e46?
Eric Reed better late then never right? But the E46 facelift models has a M54 engine and the pre-facelift has the M52(tu) engine
Hi, when the engine is on I can hear some air noise at disa valve area.. is that could be poor disa o-ring?(M54B25) when accelerate there’s some gaps where I could hear the air noise. Thank you
Panneer Selvam Ramasamy Possible check Airbox area
Thank you, will check!
You rock!!! I wish the DISA valve was my issue. Your video was the first one that showed how to effortlessly remove the connector! I didn't want to just yank it off, but didn't know about the wire lock on the connector. Piece of cake after you showed it on the video. My noise is coming from more of the front of the motor and down in the middle I think. Any ideas?
Appreciate it man! Check the CCV hoses. What codes are on for you?
If the sound is a metal rotating sound, its possibly your water pump and clutch fan that needs replacing, I had the same sound from my 2000 328i sedan.
Hey Mark, you nailed it!!! I have replaced all the cooling system...also decided to convert the mechanical fan to an electric one. Car is so smooth right now. Loving it!!!! Thanks!
I am embarrassed to say I haven't checked codes yet;(
How could you possibly know that a Ford Probe has the same size o-ring??
Nc state shirt. Are you locate at nc? If you do i would like to go to your shop.
I know this is going on 5 years late, but I don't see any comments mentioning that WD40 is actually not supposed to be used on rubber/silicone since it'll eat away at the material. However, there is a WD40 "specialist" lubricant that's specifically made to be used in this manner. Otherwise, I greatly appreciate the part number for the alternative o-ring because I needed to replace mine and managed to find it at my nearby Car Quest (Advanced Auto) for ~$7! Thanks a ton.
Just try on my 2004 330ci ..seems like the gasket is too fat ...wont go to the end.i can stiil watch peace of the part ...its ok ,or i have to use different gasket...?thank you
Vitalii Grynchuk Me too. I just ordered the one on eBay that is noted above in the comment from Erol. I'm using the one from Advance till I get one that fits better.
Duralast/Fel-Pro part 35489 does not fit an E46 sedan DISA. It will go around the valve but it cannot be reinstalled into the intake manifold as the O-ring OD is too large once it is placed the valve...it cannot be pushed back into position without damage to the O-ring or breaking the intake, DISA, or both.
Mine is an 2004 330Ci, E46 chassis, M52(?) engine, GM 5l40E transmission. 185k. P0171 and P0174 codes. Traced it to a leak at the DISA valve, removed it, found the original BMW 'molded in' gasket flattened and ruined. Spent $9 on the o-ring referenced herein; it doesn't fit. Went to ACE hardware, bought a #88 O-Ring, dimensions listed as 2 1/8" OD x 1 15/16" ID. Stock number 35706. This one fits the DISA valve gasket opening and goes into the intake with firm pressure and seals just fine. Have 3 drive cycles on mine now, readiness is set and no pending codes; runs better than ever.
is the o ring suppose to be still partially visible once everything is tightened? because i can’t get mine to go all the way through. i wanna know i did this right.
no one knows? cool.
Is this ring good for a 2004 bmw 525i ???
Shop life tv. Any ideas on a p1593 p1421 and p1423
Niara Wilson i act ually found it was a briken vacuum line thats mustve broke while changing manifold gasket
will this fit 2003 330ci?
does it fit for bmw 2002 325i
What need replaced with a code p1353
my BMW 330xi keep burning oil,two after oil change its low I add more to the right level again .any idea what might be the problem.
The 330's are known to burn oil, I would just monitor the oil level and fix any leaks that you may have.
@@ShopLifeTV Check the ccv
Is it ok if I remove the flap on the disa valve ?
The car will still run yes, and as long as your o-ring seal to the intake manifold is still fine so you don't get vacuum leaks then you shouldn't get any check engine light because of this. But your car will be down on power and torque and fuel economy will be worse. So its not a good idea to do it. Why do you want to do it?
in your opinion, would this cause the e46 to run rough after car is warm if it runs fine for first 10 mins of driving?
It is a possibility, but what codes are showing up for your car?
Ive got p1343, p0313, and p0456. I think the misfires are unrelated as it runs fine for like 10 mins then if i turn it off and back on its fine again.
I'd rather check the O2 Sensors. If the Engine is cold it ignores its values. In BMWs opinion you're supposed to replace these every 100.000 miles.
I'm having the same issues but my code is a p1353 cylinder 6 fuel cut off.
hi.i have a 2001 bmw x5 3.0 have a code p0141 bank 1 sensor 2. so I changed the two oxygen sensors and cleared the code but after driving it a little the same code comes back p0141 . what can be the problem here? please help if you can. Thank You
+Robert Commodore Did you check the wiring harness? And are you sure you replaced the right bank?
FYI, the torque spec for that two bolt is 7 lb feet.
I bought this same part number to replace my DISA o ring but it was way too small. It was like half the size that it needed to be. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m going to have to return it I think. This is t going work.
Hi, do you know the dimensions ?
I wouldn't use WD-40 on anything rubber. I would only use silicone spray.
When should i replace the DISA valve O ring ?
Abdulhey Ben only do it it there’s a leak from it
Thank's
Does this fit a 2005 3.0 m54 ?
Did you end up finding the right fit ?
sae # 139 works well for at least the 325i....maybe even the 330i
easily found at most hydraulic shops
Thanks for the alternative!
lol..to think I sold my ford probe and got the bimmer...and here you are sending me back to buy ford probe parts...geez
Hi Some points that I would like to share on the DISA valve o-ring replacement: 1. The original re "o-ring" is not really an o-ring. As pointed out by one commentator, the rubber component was originally vulcanized by BMW. That is why it is not really shaped like a doughnut (O-ring). I have yet to see an o-ring that will perfectly fit in the DISA valve. I have tried many. 2. That explains why there is a section of the replacement O-ring still exposed after tightening the torx screw. That is not the most ideal installation of the DISA valve. But if it works, then let it be. I might have to use a gasket maker if the new O-ring fails.
Good points, the gasket maker will not work as well as the o-ring mentioned in the video.
