THE FINE PRINT | The Outer Worlds Song

The Outer Worlds by Obsidian and Private Division rips you out of hypersleep and drops you in the middle of a conspiracy at the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Will you fight to liberate Halcyon? Or serve its corporate masters? The fate of Halcyon is in your hands!
How could I not cover this game? If there's one weirdly specific niche I have carved for myself it's 'angry business man at desk' songs. But I've done a lot of those now... So I thought I'd mix it up and ditch the desk!
I've loved every second I've spent in the world of Halcyon. Weird alternate history/sci-fi dystopias are basically my favourite thing in games and this ticks all of those boxes and does it with style!
I hope you enjoy this little musical jaunt through the Outer Worlds as much as I enjoyed making it!

  • LYRICS: Welcome to space. What were you expecting? It’s a dangerous place. Thank you for investing. Go there for your rota, there for your orders Fill up these quotas, we'll bill you for quarters Report to your foreman but watch for marauders ‘Cus If you get eaten there’s fees for your mourners Prosperity’s there in the care of magnates In Halcyon heaven awaits! Did you think this was supposed to look like the posters Well it mostly does, oh if you only read closer Just ten short years to a new frontier Snooze as you cruise and you’ll wake up here! You’ve been trapped in that ship for an awful long time So perhaps you have simply forgot what you signed Honestly? Did you not read the colony policy? That defines you as company property? That waivers your say in autonomy? The conglomerate’s got you in lock and key We put the dollar back into idolatry If you’re upset you can rent an apology We are a family forged in bureaucracy No I in ‘team’ but there’s con in ‘economy’ Were you expecting adventure? Were you hoping for fun? My friend you’re indentured And pleasure’s exempt from your tenure So venture back down to your slum That's provided at generous prices Your worth is determined by your sacrifices A small term of service when down on the surface Internment’s a freebie that comes with the purchase We work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to give Ourselves the rights to buy Ourselves the right to live To earn the right to die. Welcome to our little town! Why don’t you settle down? Here, just fill out the paperwork and you can look around We’re happy as can be inside the valley cannery We live to pack the cans of meat and not to question where it’s found Until we end up in the ground around the corner in the yard You know we thought we liked the sound of finding glory in the stars The board has taught us to be proud of never reaching very far So we earn what we’re allowed and give it right back at the bar The Ale to cure what ails ya’! Zero-Gee Brew! Your favourite flavour! So work til’ you bleed - ennobled by labour Then purchase relief from your local retailer If you’d rather drop dead that’s fine But you know that dropping down dead bears a fine So you do your job, I’ll do mine I gotta meet a six foot deep bottom line We make a fortune for the board by selling boredom door to door Because it’s all that we deserve and it is all we can afford The secrets of the universe and all the worlds to be explored But our dreams are back on earth and now the work is our reward And you’ll be grateful for seats at the table Though it dips at one end and the bench is unstable You may waste your days but at least you were able To pay off your grave since we leased you your cradle Be faithful and pray we’ll repay what you invest Behave as you slave for humanity’s interest On account that you’re all on account and we’re quickly amounting humanity’s interest You’d think that we’d sink to the brink of rebellion With markets dependant on peddling weapons The architect tells them the secret to heaven Is simply consuming whatever we sell them We work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to work. To earn the right to give Ourselves the rights to buy Ourselves the right to live To earn the right to die. You should have read the fine print, my friend. Should have read the fine print You should have read the fine print, my friend. Should have read the fine print (Welcome to our little town! Why don’t you settle down? Here, just fill out the paperwork and you can look around We work and then we work and then we work and then we work And then we work and then we work and then we end up in the ground) (WORK WORK HURRY HURRY WORK WORK WORRY WORRY WORK WORK HURRY HURRY WORRY HURYY WORK WORK) You should have read the fine print, my friend. Should have read the fine print You should have read the fine print, my friend. Should have read the fine print

  • There is something SO insidious about "you should have read the fine print, my friend." It's essentially saying, "Oh, you fell for our propaganda and believed that you were going to be taking on a well-paying and fulfilling career? And now you're miserable because we're exploiting you for your labor and you have to live in a slum and try to survive off scraps? Well. That's not our fault. You should have read the fine print, my friend. You have no one to blame for your suffering but yourself."

  • 4 years later and this song, despite being made based on a video game, still singlehandedly speaks volumes about irl capitalism/corporate greed in a very clever way with well thought out wordplay. One of my favorite lines is "And you'll be grateful for seats at the table though it dips at one end and the bench is unstable" because its basically saying that yeah you may be a part of the group/company but you are clearly not thought of as equal to those in charge/control and they want to make sure you understand that you are lower than them and dont matter in their eyes. Some other lines I love are "So we earn what were allowed and give it right back to the bar" and "The ale that cures what ails you, Zero Gee Brew your favorite flavor, so work til you bleed ennobled by labor then purchase relief from your local retailer" because it explains how the company/those in control know that the people below them only have so much they can get/afford to make the work worth it and they know the people are going to pay whatever they have to in order to get it even if it means spending the last bit they have. This song is just so masterfully crafted and thought out, i love it so much.

Lil' hint: whenever your reliance is contingent on a learned moral principle, then go out of your way to eradicate the easiest way to spread it, you'll find it quite difficult to get anywhere. It's why capitalism pulled ahead, despite its exploitative nature. It tapped into human greed in order to progress. It's really no contest when the two compete.

This song is about Worker’s struggle, and they are ANALYZING IT. It is riddled with opinions and they do not state it as fact because it is an analysis. Not a statement on economics. How thick does someone have to be to understand? Capitalism to the Worker is all full of Woes. There have been world revolutions across the globe because of it- Unions exist because capitalism is full of exploitation. It’s not a new opinion and has been shared by intellectuals. Communist and Socialist thought is spearheaded by these individuals (who do have extensive experience in economics by the way), that have sympathy for the lower class. The inequality that they preach is not even Economics, it’s this working, pan-historical viewpoint. What is obviously stupid about people discussing this *Viewpoint* that they have seen throughout their lives? Ironically, it’s obviously opinion and you can’t even see that. Ironically, it’s obvious that you are oblivious to how actual economies work. Ironically enough, unhappy and unmotivated workers obviously don’t work as well. Ironically enough, monopolies and companies that do these sorts of things are bad for the economy. There is no money moving in the economy, no competition, nothing. If workers only work to spend it at their own company, then the workers cannot exactly help move the economy along by spending their wealth elsewhere. Ridiculous stuff.

    • He says that verse a total of 4 times in a row. I find this weird rule within music that phrases working in even repetitions (I.e. 2, 4, 6, and 8) are perfect. It’s kind of like on the odd measures, you’re forced to repeat on the next measure to make the phrase actually satisfying. This is most likely why he is able to repeat that phrase multiple times: because it ends on an even measure in relation to when the verse starts. 4 is a balanced number of times to repeat a phrase. 2 may be too short, 6 may be too long, but generally 4 is just right. Edit: by measures I mostly mean repetitions of a phrase

It perfectly describes the guilt that the upper class pushes onto us, telling us to be grateful for what we have, but truly this flawed system (the bench is unstable) makes it nearly impossible. Also, mentioning the dips at one end is deeper than you think. When something bends one way, it continues to collect, like if you poured water on a slanting board it will continue to keep falling to one side, demonstrating exactly how the system keeps on favoring the upper class, leading to an impossible system to get out of.

    • I also noticed that it says "we earn the right to work" four times (the 5th is "we earn the right to give"). It's important from a musical stand point, because typically something like this would be repeated three times before changing. Three is considered a perfect number in many areas which is why phrases like this typically come in threes. This is why the refrain actually becomes uncomfortable to the listener, because it makes them wait longer than they expect which adds to the general feel of the song.
