What Pokémon Games Could and Should Be (But Sadly Aren't) (Series Comparison and Retrospective)

The Pokémon series has seen a shift in game design over the past decade, but not in a positive way. This transition has been accompanied by a large amount of criticism from some of the series' long time fans. I try to identify how exactly these games have changed and why they're worse off for it (if they truly are).
twitch.tv/jackdonsurfer
This is a retrospective, review, analysis, and comparison of the entire mainline Pokémon series, and as such, it covers a large breadth of topics; it's a lot to take in, but I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on the game.
If you enjoyed the video, please consider subscribing, leaving a like, and commenting what you thought about it. I spent hundreds of hours on it (all while taking college classes) so I'd like to see if these videos are something that I should (and am able to) continue making.
I also forgot to credit PokeaimMD (aka Strong Jaw Joey) in the credits for the trick room footage, shoutout to him!
If you think I used your footage and I missed crediting you (I imported over 500 clips for the project (some of those clips being hours long) so I very well might have missed a couple) please let me know, I'll try to make it up to you!

  • Given the announcement of Pokemon Legends Arceus, what are your hopes for the game and the future of the series?

    @jackdonsurfer@jackdonsurfer3 жыл бұрын
    • I frankly just want that greater sense of challenge which you elaborate upon in this video. Picking which gyms to fight first gives the playthrough a sense of uniqueness that helps it stand out from the rest. Another thing I really want from future games is the passion of its making to be present consistently. Having environments with more life in them would really help shape the world in a way the older games might not compare to.

    • The “too much water” argument isn’t that there’s literally too much water to know where you’re going. The problem is that going through water in most Pokémon games is just not fun and poorly designed. Water routes are like other routes if they were full of tall grass, with a chance of triggering random encounters on every square of the map. Add on to that the lack of variety in Pokémon found in these routes and you have a very monotunous and annoying experience. There’s only so many Tentacools you can kill before you start getting bored. A modern Hoenn game would not have this issue since random encounters are almost fully gone. You could just wade around the ocean and only fight Pokémon if you choose to. Look at f.e. the Cobalt Coastlands in Legends Arceus, no one really complained about that being mostly a water level because the player has more control of their gameplay experience. If you want to fight Pokémon you can and if you don’t, just evade them.

Any ways the point is, I feel like the issue with Volo is the rest of the game was... Not easy, but the trainer battles were... Well, there weren't really any aside from the easy small trainers. That made Volo even harder since you have to cope with such a large power jump.

It's timeless, unlike the modern uncanny 3D models devoid of soul, unattractive and inconsistent textures, and suboptimal rendering. I don't think anyone would complain if GF doubled down on pixels, either. A pixel art style can still be successful with a modern audience. Undertale and Stardew Valley spring to mind.

Back then on NDS it was absolutely okay and perfect since they had no other option than making the game in the pixel style. • It would be really cool if you could interact with your Pokemon to participate in minigames to train their moves. Y'know, training, like a trainer. They could also make pokemon that aren't the common critter analogues (such as snakes, rats, birds, fish, you get the idea) be a lot more rare in the world. Where you have to actually go exploring in the areas they prefer in order to track down and find them. Actually training their moves like I said (or something like that) could make up for a lack of potent wild pokemon to battle. More trainers and the ability to re-battle them would be good for experience as well, especially if they grew stronger each time. Heck, another idea is non-gym leader trainers getting stronger when they defeat you. There could also be ways to track down and battle strong common pokemon as well, such as the further from civilization you get, the stronger the pokemon are. With towns even being at risk of being cut off (as something some random person says and perhaps happening in the game at some point to some town you find in your travels as just a little side adventure) by strong pokemon. Some could say this all would make the game tedious, but I'd argue that running around in grass, beating up the Pokemon that appears, and repeating this for hours is a lot more tedious than various minigames. Especially if they reduce the move pool (but still have a ton of moves) and create a minigame for each of them. Not necessarily the same thing but say unique to type and what kind of move. Like, bullet seed and bubble and bubblebeam could be based on the same training minigame but flavored for grass and water respectively.

    @midgetydeath@midgetydeath2 жыл бұрын
    • I am absoloutely into this idea! The minigames are great, but I really latched onto the idea of the abnormal (to us?) pokemon being harder to obtain, especially via having to find them in special areas or weather conditions. It'd make those pokemon feel more rewarding to obtain and special, while also making it more viable to use the "lesser" pokemon like first route birds or bugs.

I played maybe half of Shield two months ago and have absolutely no memory of it. I randomly stopped playing it just because I didn’t cared about anything in this game and didn’t even think of it until now. • Same here. One of my greatest discoveries as a kid was what "gee, I'm thirsty" means and how to get to Saffron city :D (Pokemon games definitely incentivized me to learn English when I was in primary school). Nowadays, after beating Omega Ruby and Moon, I've just lost interest in Shield mid run. Pokemon games generally aren't exactly challenging, but in SwSh I've overleveled and steamrolled everything despite actively trying to handicap my team by changing mons often (I don't think it's exp share fault, there seems to be something wrong with how fast Pokemons gain levels). There's no sense of exploration, because journey is just like a walk through a straight corridor. Finally, story is bland and dialogues boring. No reason reason to load up that save file again :(. At least Arceus was nice in terms of exploration and story was ok-ish (nothing amazing, but there were some nice ideas there that reinforced sense of adventure), so I'm hopeful for Scarlet and Violet.

The pokemon being completely broken was a problem, but it wasn't a big issue to me on a casual playthrough. Having the option to remove/reduce the effect would be better though. The main issue really is how it never improved. Now we have to deal with a 5 minute sandwich physics cutscene just to give the pokemon affection and can't even pet them anymore, it just hasn't really developed since XY

So you still need a Pokemon that can use Fly, Cut, Surf, Flash, but it should be your Pokemon, adn you don't need to remove an attack slot. Like when Ash used Charmander to light up the cave. Your Pokemon are the ones who should be helping you on your journey. I wanted it to happen since before Let's Go. It's weird how they can program HMs, program techniques, but can't program a combination of both. Like, you already have a running animation of Ursaluna. Why can't you make it into a rideable Pokemon?

You sweep the 1st leader, but your team is still around their level, so you get the hardest difficulty set of trainers vs. You sweep the 1st leader, but only because you overleveled, so the next segment of the game gives you trainers with tricky strategies you can't beat by oveleveling).

  • I really didn't want to watch a 30 minute video explaining all the things that I have been saying, but I have to give it to him, I haven't watched a video this good explaining the topic. I really hope Game Freak and Nintendo watch this. He really goes over everything explaining how you can literally make a perfect pokemon game. I feel like the whole Pokemon Community has this same views, yet Game Freak isn't listening to the community that plays their game. 20:00 mark is where people should really hear what he is saying. I've been playing pokemon every since I was little and it just seems that every game they are releasing is just getting worse and worse. They've changed the style of Pokemon now making Pokemon into Apples & Ice Cream or making the proportions weird and splashing them with everycolor from the rainbow just so they can be applying to kids. Slapping together Sword and a Sheild a $60 game and then going and adding a $30 DLC, that's where the game Devs are going down the wrong path. I think Nintendo and Game Freaks best option is to really just listen to the community and the people who are die hard Pokemon fans, the people that have been playing this game for years and years. I'm pretty sure everyone can ramble on and on about this topic and no one will probally get to this part of my paragraph review but thank you for taking the time to read this.

I knew it was going to be a *very* long journey and I would have to pay attention at all times, strategically dodging trainers to keep my item stocks high without breaking off the path I needed to reach the town. Along the way I found lots of cool areas I never knew about, especially with Dive. And reaching the town was always a stepping stone for a larger goal. It was my home base so I had a Pokemon Centre nearby when I went to catch Raquaza, with Sky Tower being a brutal challenge in its own right. I always felt so much relief when I finally made it to Pacificlog with my Pokemon on their last legs. The new games have nothing like this. • Great video, pokemon is sure not what it used to be. Back when i first started, leafgreen was what i played. I loved the main story so much, but when i beat it, i was kinda sad that kanto was a kinda if bland region to explore. However, i watched some video on youtube about the sevii islands. I had seen other videos about extra locations in these games, but they were all modded and faked. I still decided to try tho, get 60 mons in pokedex, and all of a sudden, I realized that there was more to explore. I set foot on four island and realized that there was not only new locations that were not mentioned at all, but pokemon i had never seen before. Pokemon nowadays is so linear and not fun because all the locations are made known, not expansive like the older games, and give almost all the content before you finish the league. I dont know if the 2d added to the mystery of the routes, but the old routes sure felt more expensive because we didnt know what was behind the treelines and mountains or if there was a secret behind a tree you could cut down. I did enjoy the ultra games because of the beach theme, wormholes, and because by the time i played them recently they were the last games to have the full pokedex. But i dont plan on playing anymore pokemon if this continuous dumbed down theme continues. Its sad.

Gold/Silver Cyndiquil is easy (Super effective against Bugsy and bellsprout tower), Totodile is normal (Ok on all gyms in game), Chikorita is hard mode (Weak to Faulkner and Bugsy). Ruby/Sapphire Mudkip is easy (Super effective against Roxanne and immune to Watson), Torchic and Treecko can go either way (in Sapphire Treecko is better in Ruby Torchic is better) Diamond/Pearl Chimchar is easy (if evolved supereffective against Roark then breezes the game (also best of 3 fire types in DP)) Turtwig is normal (Supereffective against Roark and Ok against Gardenia) and Piplup is slightly harder mode (Super effective against Roark weak to Gardenia).

  • I think everything up to USUM had been really good for different playstyles. In gen 6, there's still plenty of hidden areas that give you cool stuff. If you wanted a certain mega evolution, you had to go find the stone for it. The free mega Lucario is in case you happen to not want to use the ALSO FREE mega Kanto starter you're given, or if you want options for your team. And in gen 7 there was still a ton of content. You could go hunting for Zygarde cells, Trial Stickers, Z crystals. You could go into Ultra Space for a chance at shiny or legendary Pokémon. Besides, it's not like having a story focused game is a bad thing. SwSh are bad games not because there's more of a focus on story over exploration, but because the story sucks. It's fun to play through the story of XY because the story is, while definitely simplistic, interesting. Figuring out that team Flare intends to wipe out all life on the surface of the planet while they huddle underground to wait for it to become livable again makes you want to go stop them. Lusamine's obsession with Ultra Beasts(or Necrozma) at the expense of neglecting her own children is good motivation to chase her to another dimension. But SwSh is just... "hey, welcome to Pokémon Side Character Edition. Enjoy watching and hearing about how you're nothing special and how Leon is so much better... despite the fact that we'll give you the tools to bring all your Pokémon to absurd levels before even setting foot in the first real city. And SV is fine, if you don't count the game breaking bugs and performance issues

From there it all goes downhill for them and they go from friendly to a jerk rival. Then during a post game they keep their jerkish nature but they try their best to be nicer still having that sarcasm and sass like silver and blue.

    @AliGator0924@AliGator09243 жыл бұрын
    • Not really. Turning into a huge jerk after many losses is a sign of a sore loser. Here's an idea: Have Hop start out as a TOTAL NOOB. He knows next to *NOTHING* about Pokemon typings, advantages, disadvantages, movesets, EVs, IVs, etc. That would add logic as to why he picks the starter weakest to yours. Then, as the game goes along, he learns from his losses. He takes notes, he grows, he evolves. Then, at the championship battles, he would've been an expert due to the losses, research, and wins that he experiences throughout his journey. Heck, depending on your team before you enter the league, he'll have a team to counter your every Pokemon. When he inevitably loses, he shakes your hand, symbolizing that despite his loss, he truly enjoyed the struggles, the teachings, and the victories that he gained along the way.

Sure, there are people who say stuff like the gym system needs to go etc. But they're a small minority. But here's where you go wrong and utterly contradict yourself with your statement. You call this video whiney without realizing that the video is in fact criticizing the games exactly because *they are no longer as they used to be.* Like did you even watch the video? He compares the new and old games throughout the video and talks about pacing, region design and difficulty and the whole point of the video is to point out that those things have become so simplified in the new games that they're not the same and thus not enjoyable anymore. People don't want strict change, they want *improvements.* Pokemon Sword & Shield is so full of cut corners and awful design decisions that of course fans are pissed, they no longer feel the same about the games. There has been complaints ever since X&Y came out and SwSd were simply the last straw to those people. If the games had not cut the national dex, had a satisfying enough story, some difficulty, less handholding and the region design wasn't completely linear people wouldn't complain nearly as much about the less important things like graphics. But because SwSd is so lackluster and bareboned, people try to find at least something good about them but the fact is that nothing *fundamental* in these games is good so everyone gets frustrated. They're utter trash compared to the older games. Everyone is pissed not because the games haven't changed but because the games are missing everything that made the old games great. GameFreak removed all those aspects. "No need to fix what is not broken" Yeah piss off. If you think the games aren't already broken just from lacking everything that makes a good modern RPG then I don't know what to tell you.

Scarlet and violet tried so many new graphical things and the switch couldn't handle it"- apart from being technically wrong, let's just assume the switch couldn't handle all the amazing stuff S&V did. If you develop software for a specific end system and don't test whether your amazing stuff even works properly on said system. That is entirely on you. Furthermore, since stuff got improved/fixed by later patches, it demonstrates that the system can INDEED handle the stuff, you just implemented it wrong. Otherwise, patches wouldn't work, since your hotfix doesn't change the end system capabilities. Defenses like this just show blindly loyal fans, who apparently lack insight into business practices that go into actual quality games.

They just made him so annoying and unlikable due to his many interactions with you and what he's saying. For the first half of the game you can barely walk 5 steps without Hop coming to tell you something annoying or battling you. You stomp him and he says stuff like "Oh I almost have you" when you have 6 pokemon with full health and he is on his last in the red. He just took me out of what little immersion I had and annoyed the crap out of me.

    • @@Missingno_Miner Now that I think of it, you're right. That's pretty close to the stuff. I mean yeah the characters are still different. Bianca doesn't find interest in battles and Hop is motivated by his family not giving a crap about him because his brother is champion and a god and ooooh uuuh aaahhhh look at that unbeatable charizard *Repeat line 5 times* This made me think of Bede, my own personal favourite Rival of the game He's present more than Marnie. Less than Hop but he doesn't interrupt you 5 times from walking to a train station like Hop does Bede has that attitude. You also feel sorry for him because Rose doesn't give a crap even if Bede tries his best. He's a capable trainer still and has some character development. Left handed too, that's an interesting detail. etc etc. BUT. The thing I thought of the most was 'He's your rival and he becomes a gym leader, that's kinda cool' But then I thought of it more and Green/Blue becomes a gym leader too. Bed does it during the game itself where as Green/Blue is sequel stuff when they're no longer your rival. Buuuuuut yeah, so gym leader rival wasn't the first time execution here either At least there was something else Opal is a great character and I love her, but Bede is also great Marnie..... Mmm.... she also became a gym leader, somehow, even if she kinda said no during the story itself. She could have found something else after becoming champion didn't work but nope. And Piers to me is the better of the two hands down. You could have included her in the post-game dynamax gym stuff. It makes sense as to why Bede wasn't there helping you, he doesn't care. But you could have had Marnie tagging along instead of Piers. Not that I mind, because I like Piers more, but, Maybe it could have made Marnie cooler and more involved? Too late for that now

You were left to what you had and it was hard, scary and you felt the same way your characters did which translated to the story. That was like 10 hours of gametime where as an 8 year old, I felt the most invested in the stakes in a pokemon game in my entire like. • Great video. I realize it's a couple of years old but somewhat still relevant. I don't entirely agree on a couple points, for example I think Gen 7 had a great region, if a bit linear, and decent difficulty (I turned off exp share a couple of times and got in trouble with some off road trainers); and gen X and Y, while one of the worst regions in my opinion, had the glorious Lumiose City and an ACTUAL post game quest with Looker's mission which made you explore the city even more. You complained about X and Y's lack of post game but what, besides catching legendaries, kind of post game previous games had? Maybe GSC that you could go to the whole other region and beat it's gyms, but I don't count a battle facility "good post game" content. Anyway, one specific point you touched on is something I've mentioned in other videos. Having pokemon help you explore is something very rewarding (although wasting a move slot on an HM is not). They should have like stables in some cities and you can leave pokemon with the capabilities to cut/climb/surf/etc and you can call them if you're close to that stable. With over 1000 existing Pokemon it would give more purpose to your catches beyond your party-six. You'll be catching a lot of different pokemon anyway if you are aiming to complete the dex, as it is encouraged in every game.

Pokemon is one of the biggest media franchises in the whole world, making billions of dollars off of the TV shows, games, merchandise, cards, etc. Anything even slightly related to Pokemon almost always ends up selling incredibly well. They eventually seemed to have realized this. Why bother investing effort into your games if you can lazily put something together and be guaranteed that it'll sell millions of copies? Despite all the flaws with the more recent games, people seem to just keep eating it up. They even introduced DLCs and people still kept buying it... A truly open world pokemon game would take a lot of time and money to develop and design every fun detail the old games had. These companies got to balance between pleasing the stake holders and the customers playing them. They can't spend 10 plus years developing a single pokemon game, rendering an entire world into 3d. It would cause a franchise to loose relevance and significantly slow the revenue stream of said franchise. What we end up with is a game that has to simplify and often cut a lot of unique areas to get the game out in the market just so our avatar can walk 5 times further to see more rocks and trees. Open world works for games like Fallout or Breath of the wild because there world is in ruins... There's not suppose to be that much going on. But in a franchise filled with yes ruins but also, several towns, towers, multilevel caves, hidden factories, outposts, entire optional routes, your not going to get all of that in 3d. That's why I think Galar is so bland. I can almost guarantee you in Legends Arceus, Pokemons first open world game, will feature the town in the trailer and maybe a small few of interesting tidbit in the wilderness if we're lucky. That's will be it.

  • I would like to say, y was my first game. I have hundreds of hours on it. It took me years before I discovered looker’s bureau while wandering around confusedly through the city. That actually was a really rewarding experience, finding a whole new part of the game in a place I never expected it to be in. … but yeah you’re right, been playing white 1 and 2 lately and it’s still more engaging. Even so, I can’t help being excited just to bring my Pokémon to where I can feed them and play with them and fight with them. I admit x and y suck in terms of story and everything, but I can’t agree entirely should anyone say it had no sense of exploration. It did, if you don’t have a wiki. … not much of a bright side but it’s still there! Great video though, you make a good point.
