Also dried chickpeas and beans that you soak and cook - you get a lot for little money and you can make curries, hummus, even black bean brownies! Interesting to see how much food you can get for a tenner in Britain! Greetings from New Zealand.

Pancakes made from oat “ flour rocks “ 🥞 just blend up dried oats and gave oat flour ! I do this all the time ! My son and I live on oats for breakfast or when run out of wraps I make pancakes with chai seeds for school !

  • I think it’s important also to remember that people living in genuine poverty often don’t necessarily have access to cheaper supermarkets (don’t drive, no money for transport), have other obstacles such as not having proper cooking equipment, not able to afford the electric/gas to cook, so many things make it a lot more complicated than just buying the £10 worth of food

    • Definitely- and it's easy to say that spices don't count, but if you use them often it accounts to 1 or 2 quid a week. I don't have a car so my nearest supermarket is Sainsbury's which is hella expensive, like £2 for a broccoli with no option of a wonky box. I'd love to see Taz do this again but at only one supermarket, like Morrisons or Sainsburys.

    • I don't know if it happens everywhere but often the 'wonky vegs' are vegetables that farmers get much less profit for as supermarkets can buy them for a much lower price and sell them themselves 'low' but actually make more profit than normal vegetables and so exploitation of farmers. Farmers would NEVER throw away their 'wonky vegs': they are normally used for pre-cut vegetables or for animal feed. So if you CAN you should not buy wonky vegs.

Even going to Aldi, our cheapest store, it would be more, and our prices have risen about .25 per item. That wonky veg box is a great idea we don’t do here. For my budgets, I usually choose one flavor profile for most of the week. For example, this week has beef and lentil tacos and a chicken tortilla soup. A lot of the more expensive items are used more as garnish and can be used across multiple recipes.

One thing to consider if you try this again is that some people don't drive and can't afford public transport, so they're stuck with having to buy food from the type of shops near them - typically a corner shop or a Metro Tesco. It would be really interesting to see how much less you get for your budget in that type of scenario. Scrambled eggs with tomato on toast for breakfast or even lunch. Pasta could get really boring as well, so I feel you with that one. I would have probably gotten a bag of flour instead to make roti, Trinidad dumplings, wraps etc. Overall, you did good. I have definitely noticed prices increasing. That being said, when this is your every day struggle it will take a toll. Because this means never going out for a meal or even a drink and having to be extra creative with a very limited selection of food items. Also, will you have the right nutrition if this is what you eat over a long period of time? Also, £10 a week may not sound like much, but if you're a family of 4 that's £40 a week. And if your children want sweets and snacks it will cost more. Life is hard for those who have no money. Hopefully the salaries will catch up with the price of living.

  • I think there are several things to keep in mind. Aldi and Lidl really help. But I was in several areas lately where none of these were available and only Sainsburys or even worse a small express shop like Co-Op or small Tesco. While Aldi pasta is still at 27p/55p, Sainsburys is at 70p now and co-op might not have storebrand pasta. So you would have to pay gas/public transport to get to further away, which will increase the cost spend. Those boxes are really good, but the Lidl shops around me haven't had those - might be a London thing. And as you said, in the end you might also get really sick and tired of the 1-3 options you can have on tight budget. But I really like those challenges and get inspired so many times when on a tight budget myself. :)

  • In reality that extra money would be what you use to buy those little extras like spices. So if you had say £5 left at the end of the month, that's what you'd have to buy spices, etc for the next month. If you were doing this long-term you could probably vary it a bit more by buying multiple base items like pasta and rice at the start of the month (larger bags are usually cheaper per kilo). You could also do things like freeze half the pasta sauce or curry for later in the month, then have something different in place of them later in the week. For example, instead of 4 pasta meals in the first week you have 2 in the first week, then 1 the following week and the last one at the end of the month (just defrost and reheat the sauce and cook more pasta).

  • This was very interesting to see, first because having seen your other videos you've improved so much with the meal prep and shopping 😂 i've learnt a lot too. I think the price difference is more evident for families, if you live alone you can maybe get away with spending 10 pounds a week in groceries but feeding more people is complicated and families are usually the ones that struggle the most during inflations for this reason. Also you have to sacrifice nutrition for the sake of budget. Really good video taz!

  • You could have made banana bread with the bananas 🍌😁 you already had eggs, you need flour which is cheap and oil which isn’t as cheap but as someone else commented you could use a bit of it and divide to work out the cost. OR Make banana pancakes and then you need hardly any oil Both great breakfast options 😍 Great video 😌. No idea how you’ve never had a leek, aren’t you Welsh 😂

    • Yeah but poorer people don't get to buy a tonne of oil and then only use a bit and "work out the cost". If you could do that, this challenge would be the easiest thing ever. You could literally just bulk buy whatever you wanted and then your cost per meal would be incredibly low. The issue is, this is only a realistic option for richer people.

  • fantastic video as always. I would love to see you try to do a 2 week challenge though. Again it isn't the same as always having just £10 per week for your groceries, but it would be interesting to see if you set yourself £20 for 2 weeks what you could do. With the wonky veg box you could make a thick vegetable soup, and if you bought some dried lentles that would be good in the soup and also in a curry. I think if you started out with the £20 budget you might find it easier to come up with some meals. But well done, you did a great job

I use these three spices with a spoonful of mango chutney to glaze chicken for frying in the pan and eating it with a fresh leafy salad. Or in a stirfry kind of dish, even in dhals and lentil one-pot stews. Lovely thing with big potential flavourwise.

  • A lot of stir fry and soup recipes taste good with cheap vegetables, so the veggies box is a steal😁 what we need is good base sauce, salt, pepper, and sugar, the old banana can be used to make banana pudding or bread just need some flour and baking soda, the extra onion can be used as onion rings for snacks, one box goes a long the way. Even when I used to only afford a pack of instant noodle I would add veggies and egg and make stir fry and eat it with rice so one pack noodle can last me 3 meals for a day 😁✌️

And i know it must be hard seeing the inflation rate in the UK, but imagine that here, in Poland, the official rate is around 9%, and just like the video you included, the real price growth is much more dramatic. Also, the situation here is more difficult because the minimum and average wage is waaay lower than in the UK whereas the prices, in general, I'd say are lower in the UK than in here. So, pray for us or adopt me if you will, I am a good cook (Self-ad time) haha :D

One tip is if you're cooking for 1, to freeze stuff if you make bigger meals, like you could make 2 servings of pasta and then freeze the rest of the sauce for another day. The pasta won't freeze well, but the sauce will and it doesn't take up that much room. You can also freeze the bananas to use in smoothies, banana bread, etc.
