  • It's pronounced Mallee as in Sally and valley. It's one of Australia's better known timbers that comes from the south west. Mix the Mallee burl with Jarrah in a jewelry box and see the magic.

  • Nice job on the Mallee Burl. It would be like turning concrete!! I am lucky living in Australia and have Mallee Red Burl available quite cheaply. I am a pen turner and use Mallee Red and Mallee Brown in a heap of my pens. I had to resort to Carbide Tips a lot of the time as, like you, I was resharpening my gouge (a good quality Sorby) quite often. BTW - there is no "R" in Mallee. Just sayin'. Take care and thanks for sharing

  • Wow!! That's a beautiful piece. I've read that Malee was like turning a brick and you confirmed it. As a beginner, I have a question though - why didn't you power sand the wings with the 2" discs instead of hand sanding? Was that a preference or do you get better results hand sanding? Thanks for sharing this video! 👍🏾

    @gregjohnson8486@gregjohnson84869 ай бұрын
    • Thanks, Greg! And welcome to the wood turning family! I did do SOME power sanding on the wings, but it can cause some issues where the corner is between the wing and the bowl. So I power sanded as much as I could, then hand sanded up close (if that makes sense).

      @TournageDubois@TournageDubois9 ай бұрын
    • @@TournageDubois Ahhh, OK. I just wondered when I didn't see you power sand. Yes, it makes perfect sense. Thanks for your explanation!
