I hear this question a lot, especially among people who are interested in coding. Let me say this, the last company I worked for hired a woman who was 52 as a C# developer. She got hired over a guy who was 28 and another who was 30. She started learning at 47 after 20+ years as a elementary school teacher. You aren't too old
Now that is a fantastic example! Thank you for sharing!
It's not her fault the it area was not so developed in her youth
I wonder what made them pick her over the younger applicants.
@@fahimaljahangir3059 their soft skills were severely lacking . They came off like robots: age wasn’t a factor.
@@poppingjaz got it sir :) I see how a school teacher brings leadership and a mentorship skills for a team. Makes sense now.
I’m 52 and just got a job in Cybersecurity. Yes I’m not a pentester. But it’s Never too late.
Thank you for sharing! That is fantastic :)
Hey Pat, congratulations and well done! What was your background and what did you do? Which path did you follow? Where did you start? Any tips... Appreciate your reply
Awesome!
@@AJ-I hi Ahmed. I’ve been in Cisco Networking and telecoms for about 28 years so had a good knowledge in that. I decided to take some cyber certs. Fortigate, CCNA Cyberops, Sec+ currently taking CISSP and probably OSCP pentest. Applied for a job as. Cybersecurity consultant and By fluke landed a interview (well I had 5 interviews with various people technical and not technical) I must have done good in my presentation. The role is a Cybersecurity consultant with a company who develop and offer network detect and response (with Ai and Machine learning) and pen testing. I will work in their solutions engineering helping sales. It gets me a foot in the door. I’ve a lot to learn over the next 6 months to get up to speed but excited. Cyber is a continuous learning it doesn’t stop. I’ve done bits of security in my networking career however this is all in. All I can say is do a few certs and keep applying. It’s more about you as a person than your certs. That’s what they told me anyway :) I thought I was too old. They wanted the experience.
@@pataleno thank you so much for a detailed reply. All the best in your new role and career!
I hit 61 in 3 months and I just got hired, starting me at a high figure mark. It is never too late
Sounds like you have proper previous experience
Well done. Honestly this made me very happy to hear.
Congratulations!
And I wish you all the best in life
Did you have certifications? Sec+ Network+ etc?
Thanks guys...I been asking this question for a while. I completed my MS Cybersecurity at 67, just turned 69 and studying for the OSCP...and still "trying harder". I want to start my own one man show after I get a little more experience.
How are you doing a year later
I'm 63 and have been in IT support on and off since the late 90's, and now I want to move into cybersecurity to move up and to use it to work part time (if needed) when/if I retire in 5 or so years. I'm so glad I'm not the only one over 60 and as he says "late to the process". We'll just keep bringing the energy!
Wow. Inspiring.. thank you.

Started at 48. Between this video and the one from Gary that you linked, no one should think they are too old. Biggest thing is to love learning!
Thank you. I really needed this!
Are u currently working in cyber security?
@R A Get your education and certs. Sec+, CySA, GPEN, OCSP. I have had both CySA and C|EH, and find CySA to be a better cert, as it doesn't have to spend a lot of time going over Sec+ concepts. Apply for jobs being completely honest about not having 'hacking' experience, and stay humble as a beginner.
You recommend just getting certs and what cert should I start with or going to college to study it and get certified
wow buddy ,i strated at 32 and i feel too old xD never get old to learn something new huh
Finished my degree and entry level certifications in my late 30s. Had absolutely no IT knowledge or experience prior having worked in the mortgage and finance industries. Now I’m working as an IT Security Analyst for STARZ making a good salary and loving it. So NO never too late.
I'm in the same boat. 35 and starting a whole new career in IT leaving my old one behind. Going back for my AS in Cyber and I already have a MA lol
How do you get your income from whole u were taking Ur degree? Did u take student loans?
I'm also thinking of switching from mortgage field. How do you like IT after mortgage world?
What’s the pay for a security analyst?
Gosh this is so damn relatable. I turn 35 in a couple months and just started my IT journey into information security. I also worked in the mortgage industry for the last 6 years up until 6 months ago when it went to crap. The industry is just to volatile for me to put most of my eggs into it. When it’s good it’s good but… I appreciate your post because I’ve been struggling with the am I to old and since I was never into IT growing up can I even do it? I know I can but you post gave me some more motivation

@Oh Canada Well.. your help would be greatly appreciated! I am still figuring it all out, i am just following online YT courses and i just see where it gets me atm.
@Oh Canada Sorry you tagged somebody else.. lol But still.. all help is very very welcome :D
I am 72 and continue to learn different things just because I love doing this. I started in around 2005 getting into computers. When I was disabled by a neck operation in 2008 I was glad I had some experience. I couldn't work in a machine shop any longer after 35 years. Being paralyzed in my left arm for a year was a struggle but I made it through. I know I won't been as good as most but it is fun learning.
You're my inspiration Sir, I'm 57 and looking forward to hitting the books.
Great video
I’m 33 and struggle with this BAD, every. Single. Day. I feel I wasted my life and only found my passion way later (computers and security) than most and that it’s too late for me and it’s torturous. So this was a huge help. What I took from this is that it’s never too late. If I want it bad enough I can have it, I just have to be willing to put in the work. Very inspirational guys thank you
Definitely not too late at 33. You still have 32 years or so until normal retirement age.
Same boat as you! Didn't even realize i liked coding/IT until my 30's! But i love learning- its great fun and does not deter me my age!

I'll be 56 next birthday. I've been in physical security for over 30 years, so security is in my blood. I love computers and can sit behind my computer all day and night. What I'm finding or was finding to be a problem is the lack of guidance. Thanks to David and Neal, I now have more of an map moving forward. The IT world is so big and confusing that I stopped studying IT because it was too overwhelming for me to focus on a direction. I took beginners to intermediate courses in C++ and, although I'm not yet proficient at it but today I have a clearer idea of the direction i need to go after these two interviews with Neal. Thanks guys!!
I spent 10 years working in a customer service call center. Then I was a trainer for 6 years training the customer service reps and their managers. Next, I ran my own dog walking company for 3 years. At 37 I decided to make a change and got a job as an IT sys admin. After 3 years the company I work at created a brand new cyber team that sat in the same office as us. I listened in their conversations and constantly asked them questions as I had never heard of a cyber team. I found it fascinating. I spent my evenings learning the basics of PowerShell, Networking, Python etc and a year later got a job as a junior cyber analyst at 41. The main thing I bring to the team is my soft skills and passion for learning. Best career move i've made so far. Oh, and today I racked my first sensor into the server rack. Today was a good day :)
I don't believe in retirement, I'll just start doing something else.
From all the youtube cybersec channels, yours is the most well explained and well constructed and no bullshit in it just for channel views. Great job.
This is so inspirational. I'm 40, and am at the beginning of my journey transitioning into cyber security. The line that just struck me while they discussed imposter syndrome: "You are unique, there is no one like you." That is so empowering. We all have unique life experiences... If only we can stop selling ourselves short, stop focusing on what we aren't, and instead focus on who and what we ARE... So thankful that I found this channel at the beginning of my journey. Committed to the ride, no matter how long it takes.
Hey Kevin, so a year ago since your comment, how are you getting on?

I am a 50 year disabled person, vested in a career. Due to health issues from being shot I was forced to get out of the industry I had worked in for years, and have been living on disability income. Though I’m so very grateful for this income, it’s very low and to me most importantly I have no life. As I look back at the years I’ve found myself having a 30+ years of true interest in hacking & networking. So, I’m looking forward towards learning, as an older learner I’ve learned I’m much “hungrier” as a learner than I was in my 20’s. It’s a matter of where to the start & the bare basics for an older learner re certification/s to get up and running that’s important to me. There’s so much information & so many directions one can go! Thank you for another great video! This one really applies to me. Gives me confidence! Thank you David.
I'm Turning 40, and have been putting this off for years believing that it was too late.. this has breathed life into a deep seeded dream I've had for some time, I would have otherwise dismissed as out of my reach. Thank you.

49 here . Do you recommend me to go in this field ?
Thank you guys once again. I have dropped my CCNA course before, putting myself down thinking I'm too old for it. Even though I did pc info & tech in college, ran my own pc repairing business back in college, and worked in tech support for a bit; but because I've been a chef for the past 15 years I felt detached from my previous experience. I'm now back on the horse, and I'm taking both your CCNA and ethical hacking course. Thank you again. I really appreciate what you're doing so much, for everyone.
This is so inspiring and motivating! I’ve been in the service for 19.5 years, and I’m eligible for retirement in six months. However, I presently have no skill set than translates well into the civilian world (other than law enforcement). I joined the military as a young man to escape poverty, but I never really planned for what I’d do when I got out. If I could do it all over again, I would’ve gone into communications, but I can’t change the past. Anyway, hearing interviews like this gives me hope for the future. I’m still going to finish my BS in chemistry because I want to finish what I started, but I’m all in on the IT field.
Thank you so much for this podcast. This defiantly helped me a bit more to overcome my anxiety getting started in this industry. Level of confidence definatly in present.
Definitely one of the most positively influential and uplifting IT talks I have seen. Thank you gentlemen.
Great video. 60 here with over 40 years IT. Looking to get more focused on cyber security. On a side note, I've always told my kids and now grandies, "when you think you have it bad, there lots of others who have it a lot worse." Thanks for the encouragement!
Perfect video that I needed to hear today being 57 years old with 21 years in IT and ready to change directions within IT. Thanks!!!
Loving these videos! Thank you so much!! Almost going to graduate from my cyber security program in March. I’m 38 with lots of prior professional experience in other fields so this is perfect timing/info for me. I’ve committed myself already to this new field and hearing this is so inspirational.
This video came at the right time, just when I was struggling with a THM room and thinking that maybe it was too late for me to learn about all this stuff (early 30s) Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge, it has helped me a lot.

Hi David, love the content that you provide. I am getting into the cyber security field myself in my late 40's, coming form a music producer, carpenter, and I graduated last year with a first in Child Psychology. I have been doing my own research and have read quite a few books that you have advised and some of them I am still waiting to receive. Coming from a music producer and mix engineer background there is quite a bit of overlap regarding how electricity travels which I was quite surprised about, and have found those transferable skills have helped me to understand how computers work on a much deeper level and how coding also works with regards to electricity. I have started learning Python and find that very interesting, the whole field regarding computers in general I find very intriguing. My age is not a factor for myself, and will continue to follow your advice and all the professionals that you bring onto your show. Thanks again.
This has been another fantastic video with Neal. I got my information of all the different sectors under security. David, you covered a lot of great questions. Thank you.
Thanks for this video! I just found David's channel for the first time last night. I'm 47 and about four years away from retiring from a long and honorable career of public service. I'll be 52 when I retire, so earlier this year I enrolled back in school to get my degree in Network Administration. Because of my background & experience, I have a natural interest in Cybersecurity. I've always been very analytical. This video really spoke to me and the questions I've been having for the last six months and beyond. I really appreciate the video and the conversation you both had while doing this. Thanks David & Neal!
I am 31 years old. I have been in IT for nearly 8 years as a help desk and field technician. I got into it with no degree or certifications, and as a result I have always felt like I was just playing at being in IT, even though I am good at what I do. These videos and others like them have pushed me into embracing IT as my calling and pursuing a career path beyond the help desk. I have one cert down this year, and hopefully many more to come...
As someone who is 45 (it's like you were talking right to me) and has spent the last 25 years as a career firefighter/paramedic and fire service instructor, this video was inspiring. The idea that my prior experience with critical situations, resource/personnel management and education was something I saw as not as important as certificates. Thank you for the video and I look forward to moving along in my education. On a side note, at the end of the video David mentioned someone stated Neal has never worked a day in his life. I think he was referring to the old quote, "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life." I am sure I am not the first to mention that, but I get the same feeling when I listen to both of you. Thanks guys
I'm 42 and found myself needing to change industries again, this time due to injury. I'm still too broad in what I want to do, but between writing and developing video games for my kids and dabbling into web development and network security, I am SO GRATEFUL for this channel and this video. Thank you Gentlemen. My injury was a year ago now, and since then I have been tenacious in learning these new fields. My time in the Army is paying for my school, so I am going into my third semester back and am pursuing software development there and learning cyber security (especially on web application vulnerability).
Thanks Neal and David for this amazing and honest views. I recently discovered your channel and I must admit that you just addressed some of my problems.

Hey David. In 2015, after experiencing issues with Bipolar 1 disorder, I committed some crimes; namely, I eluded police in a car and caused an accident in which someone broke their arm. I was charged with three felonies and pled Guilty Except for insanity (I'm in Oregon). Currently, I am in the Oregon State Hospital, waiting to be released into the community. I have learned to manage my mental illness and am stable and on meds. I am bright and driven and, after watching your videos with Neal, I am motivated to get into cybersecurity. I can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to make this informative and very motivating video. I also want to thank the individuals who have posted these positive comments. After working as a video game developer for 13 years, the industry made a devastating transition leaving a lot of veterans out of work (unless they wanted to go work overseas for the companies who took over). Most of them went into IT. I found myself at a crossroads needing to make a change during an economic downturn. I got my real estate license and have been an agent for about 9 years. I am 51 now and real estate has run it's course. As a techie, I have always wanted to get back into the digital world. Glad to hear this because I'm 39 years old and taking the CySA+ exam in a few days however I have to admit that getting into cyber security seems really difficult because every single job offer ask for CISA, CISM or CISSP... All those 3 are certifications ask required from 4 to 5 years of experience in the cyber security field but how can I get a job into cyber security when they are asking me for a certification that I can't get... People really need to give more respect to Security+, CySA+, PenTest+ and CASP+. The knowledge that you get in these ones is good and there is no reason to look down on them and just ask for CISA, CISM and CISSP which are clearly the monopoly of cyber security certifications.
Thank you for this video! I am 38 and coming from mostly restaurant and currently working construction. Even though I "knew" this I still really needed to hear this.

I'm really 60 an have been in helpdesk for many years. I earned a Security+ designation and tried moving that direction but found my lack of experience hindered my marketability. But this video has inspired me to continue looking for other opportunities in infosec. Thanks!
Thanks for all that you do David, I catch every video you make.
Thank you very much Brett. I appreciate your support :)
This was very inspiring and I feel so empowered. BOTH these men really just put things into perspective for me. Thank you for all the information on this channel!!!
Thank you so much for this inspirational content. At 49 I find the psychological challenges to be way more difficult than the actual learning processes (if you know where to start and in what direction etc.) and you guys nailed so many questions with this one! Groete uit die Weskaap, SA.
Same age here
Ohhh I needed this. Read Unix and Linux Administration Handbook 4 hours today and was wondering if I was getting too old.... thanks David! I'm 46
thanks, David you have the magic of asking questions that we think of.
This was right on time for me. Not sure how I stumbled across this video but it is right on time. Thank you so much.
31 yo, been working at a cemetery for 10 years. Finished CCNA routing and switching + Linux and Python at University last semester. Studying CCNA Cybersecurity and Project Management this semester. ☺ Hope to get in to the business one day! / Great episode. Cheers from Sweden.
I am my late 40’s ...I am looking for a change ....this video has been inspiring .....thank you!
This is the first time I’ve stumbled on this channel, I can say without a doubt Ive been very pleased. Both individuals are very easy to listen to.
Wow , guy, thanks a lot , I actually fond myself in this specific situation, not only this video has been great strategic aid, but also inspiration, thanks !!
This is very inspiration for a person who feels entering in to cybersecurity is late. I'm 33 and a working as IT Support Engineer for last 10 years. I didn't have proper guidance. when I started there whole lot of stuff to learn but it's better to keep one step at a time. This video makes me believe never too old to achieve your goals. But me and people need mentorship like you do. Thank you for a wonderful discussion.
You're welcome Isham!
This is awesome! Im a 33 yo sophomore in a 4yr cyber program. I am constantly comparing myself to the 20 yo that have been coding since 10 and I feel worthless. Thanks to both of you for saying this stuff out loud!
Bout to be 32 and a senior in a 4 year degree as well. We grew up in a different time and it took me a bit to accept that there will always be someone with an advantage. In this case the younger generation were born with an ipad in their hands. Work hard, stay dedicated and remember that you have something the younger crowd does not and that is life experience. At least in my experience I’ve lived all over the world ( ex military) have years of experience in other skills. Close the gap and you will be way ahead. Best of luck in your studies and future !
There are very few of us who are like that. But don't let them put you down and don't let it you get you down. I got lucky as i had a friend who was into electronics hacking. I got interested. I didn't code until after university... So yeah. We all have our won journey's.
I started college at 34 for a CS degree. I credit my age for the academic scholarship I got to my local four-year university. I'm 36 now, and I see my age as an asset. Many students see school as a chance to party, but I'm all about my academics and treat school like a job. When people ask what I do for work, I just tell them I'm pursuing an academic career at the moment. Personally, I'm glad I waited for school. I can honestly say I would have wasted an education had I been able to attend at 18.
The next gen are not hard workers and dont have the work ethic. They are all soft and everything is an opportunity for a ‘mental breakdown’. The old gen know how to work hard and have lived a life of overcoming and problem solving
@@tigerfist5120 🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️
Keep going Neal. Love the stories. They really help.
Great video! No need to worry about the length, I would watch no matter how long. You always give tons of great advice and information. Thank you.
Thank you Jeffrey! I appreciate that.
I gotta say it again, I love your videos/interviews. You have a way with expanding on the right topics. You seem to know when guys like me (Completely Green to Cyber Sec. with 3-5 years experience in tech hardware repair) Listening to previous topics, I was able to add quite a bit to my "Special Skills" list on my resume, and after re-writing in the aforementioned skills into my resume, I was astounded at what I didn't know that I knew how to do, compared to other people in my social/professional circles. My favorite of which are: Top 5 1. Proficiency in diagnostics, and troubleshooting. 2. Proficiency in all the Win, Linux, and MacOS. 3. Proficiency in Android OS, iOS, and various 3rd party Android flavors (such as Linux for Android). 4. Proficiency in proprietary software management and installation. (Certified Samsung Diagnostic Tools, and flashing software) 5. System Administration
I appreciate the content guys. I am one of those older guys, trying to get into cyber. But I'm determined and willing to work.
What makes me keep coming back to the channel is when the talk is not just focused on certain country environment but more on a Global scale. Everyone needs suggestions in life (not advice but suggestion) so we can make the most out of it at any age ... thank you !
You guys are rockstars! 🎸🤘🏻 Thank you for your positive and helpful content!
It is very encouraging. I have two graduate degrees in the arts with softskills/leadership. I have my CCNA, Security + and almost 6 months experience in a NOC. Yet, it has been incredibly difficult for me to transition into IT. I feel like companies don't recognize or value these transferrable skills for job applicants - especially those getting into the field for the first time.
Hi Chris sorry I don’t think your telling the truth here. If you have your CCNA this means that you can demonstrate routing and switching hands on skills and on top of that you have Security+… 80% of the guys in my team do not have both at once and they only attained these after starting as juniors… I work in the network and security team within an MSP by the way… I’m sorry either you used dumps to pass your exams or you have no idea how to write a CV. I don’t want anyone to read your self-pitty-ing comment and look down on these extremely priceless certifications
I'm 30 and i'm very confident that "i can bring something to the table"and I want to spend the rest of my life working in cybersecurity.David and Neal inspired me so much on this journey that there's not a day that I do not think about bash scripting, powershell and python.🥳
Go for it! Please make sure you update us in future :)
I feel the exact same way.
30 is young. Have fun!
Awesome!! 💪🏼
@@davidbombal same thoughts here, at almost 29 years old, 3 years of NOC job... I don't really know how to thank you David for every video, everything you are doing on this channel and out there. Following you since december and you freakin opened my mind to a lot of stuff! Starting from basics now, going for the Linux+ right now, building those solid basics! Keep up
I really love Neal’s take on things!
I finished watching this video! I’m about to be 35 and starting my bachelors degree in August for IT. I’ve been in a working at a grocery chain for over 15 years. I’ve never dealt much with computers as a whole but I’m thankful for content. This has given me a lot of confidence and sound advice thanks for your content and the people you collaborate with it’s very insightful. I’m quite apprehensive about starting a brand new career in a field I have little to know knowledge about. Thanks for taking the time to encourage people.
I'm a 32 year old women and feel like its too late. Have experience but no formal education, kind of scared to try but, lol but I'm going to do it anyway...
I'm starting at 59. You can do this!
This was my primary and most important question keeping me up some nights. It's actually a load off my mind knowing this. Though I despise being late, sorry Gary V., I can live with it once or twice..👍
Just spoke right to me. (Around the 5:30 mark) I'm 53, always worked with computers, but no IT experience. Currently in my 5th week of the M.I.T. cybersecurity boot camp. Originally wanted to get to pentesting as soon as I could, but the more I find out about other jobs, the more open I become. Just wanted to say thanks for that, and I definitely will start listening to the podcasts you cited.
Fantastic video David, thanks for doing this as it's exactly the question I've been wanting answers too. Cheers
42 and redundant, lost my marriage and job within months of each other. So now I got nothing left to lose....
go out there and smash it! you are purely free!
i'm very happy i watched this video guys well done. I spent 12 years in the infantry and tried to retrain as a plumber (7 years) but my body couldn't keep up. Now i am working towards my first CERT. Needless to say i've had so many doubts about my age (36) and my lack of IT experience.
I’m 37 and just started thinking of getting into IT last week. Have zero experience but I’m more than willing to learn. Hope all goes well for you. Do you have LinkedIn? Maybe we could help each other some how
I was asking some of these questions, appreciate the coverage.
Right on. Second video I watched in your channel, awesome knowledge and direction. I thank you very much.
I’m 31 and have been considering going into cyber security. I currently work in healthcare and I feel my drive and passion slowly dwindling. COVID has made a lot of people moody, depressed, and feeling uncertain. It has just changed the entire culture of working in a hospital. I work long hours so it’s going to be a tough transition, but thankfully I’m young and have a pretty large window of time.
How it went so far and did you manage it in the end?
I am almost 59. I did 20 years in the Navy as a Data Processor and Avionics technician. I retired after 20 years and have worked in aerospace for the last 16 years. Two years ago I decided to try and get back into the It field and got my bachelors in cyber security. The only experience I have in cyber security is the degree. Looking for jobs in the field is pretty intimidating. Every position wants 5-10 years experience or it would be a very large pay cut for positions without experience. How do you get the experience when you can't get your foot in the door without experience?
This series is one of your best. I love the real life experiences. Neil answers is very constructive and convincing. I've watched other interviews but this is just remarkable and exceptional.
Thank you!
Great Interview as always Mr. David, you two have a good chemistry for the interviews haha
