The true impact of sanctions on Russia | DW Business Special
As Europeans suffer high energy costs and the prospect of a rough winter, some have begun to ask if Western sanctions against Russia were in fact an own goal. On the face of it, Russia’s economy is not going through the meltdown once predicted and Moscow continues to make billions from selling its oil and gas to the world. However, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and his team at Yale School of Management say the narrative that Russia is riding out the sanctions is false. Their own research suggests Russia’s economy is suffering much more severely than widely reported. In this DW Business Special we discuss his findings.

Besides, you will find it's more than just the US that will defend Taiwan from CCP.

Agreed .... kudos to DW for bring this professor back. One of the best interviews and information about Russia by any media company. This is the type of reporting and information that we need to know.

@@tommo9176 I haven’t made up my mind. I’m in Russia so I can see if it’s real or not. It seems that you are perhaps afraid that I would prove that the news story is a lie?
@@SamsRussianAdventures tommo91 just basically admitted that he only accepts one narrative and one side in this story and is not willing consider any other viewpoint. Just like in the west where only one narrative is allowed on any major issue - Ukraine, covid, our foreign policy etc Anyone who speaks outside of the approved narrative is demonised, name called in the media and government, banned from MSM forums etc. They must be a conspiracy theorist, a russian bot, an anti-vaxer etc it's always the same on any major issue. They are always misrepresented and deliberately so. With Ukraine there is only one approved narrative here in the west: Russia bad, Ukraine good. The mainstream media is completely aligned with this one sided narrative. Any footage of civilians killed by Ukrainian action will never be shown in the west, it will never be reported. That is an absolute fact. I'm English, I live in England and have been following the media BS for many years now and I'm genuinely concerned at the way the west has changed.
I hope you realise this war was caused by the USA.
Love these. Well thought through questions, well explained answers, factual, non-sensational 👌🏻
DW is a fine channel and this interview is excellent. I appreciate so much DW. ❤
He only talked without any proofs of what he claims. FACTS: 1) One big secure market for russian oil = India - bought 15 times more oil in just last quarter from Russia. 2) there is a NEW trade route via Iran in the making. 3) Plus, ME nations - another big market where US cannot gain trust in after iraq, libya, syria, etc.
@@a.bharti5492 so, an energy source that's rapidly being phased out and trade relations with countries whose economies are almost completely dependent on the price of that energy source. Not the rosy long term strategy you seem to think it is. Once oil has to compete for the privilege of fueling cars in the US, China, and Europe, the price will collapse. That's maybe 15 years out.
@@a.bharti5492 Maybe, but he did say that India is "full", and does not have storage capacity for more oil. It's kind of hard to see a Russia-Iran partnership as all that attractive, or even being very successful, but it is TBD. Interesting yet debunked
A great quality interview! Bravo
I could listen to this man for hours. Why is it taking a German broadcaster to give such a chance to an American expert? Good work DW
I'd love UK broadcasters to have this man on to explain everything in terms that even Nigel Farage could understand. Sanctions are working, and working well.
If you like to hear what you want to hear. This professor talks straight from the playbook of USA media. I feel bad for his students. Not even one truth to his statement. Have looked around and seen what's going on around you? Food and gasoline prices taking Americans to the brink of starvation. Sanctions against Russia are hurting Americans and Europeans. And Putin doubled Russia’s revenue and Russia is winning the war in Ukraine too. Be smart and use your brain.
IT must be because his name is german!
Russia is self sufficient. It has Titanium (for fighters and planes.... Germans had to make an exception to import it for Airbus), it is fossil fuels, it has huge fields for growing food. Russia is fine. AND.... China supports Russia 100%! Look around, see what things are not Made in China. Germany, on the other hand, is energy-empty, and subservient to USA, and quarreling with Russia under orders from USA.
@@joeschmoe21 Haven't you read that imports from China into Russia have dropped 50%? Haven't you heard that China is imposing huge discounts on Russia for the oil it can't sell to Europe anymore? Russia is isolated and in desperate need of help, that is why China can rip it off. Putin has isolated Russia and put it in a very fragile position. It does not have the expertise, the high tech or finances. Russia has some potential but it is ruled by a corrupt, inefficient regime. As long as Russia is ruled by Putin it will never live up to its potential.
I enjoy this man's easy to follow explanations and the sanctions take some time but once a critical threshold has been reached the effects will be ever compounding and destructive.
The only effects of these sanctions is the collapse of Euro economy. Russia is doing well
@D R no one is flattering anyone. he just knows what he is talking about, it is is job. nothing else influences that. oh, and i am not a bot. so, sit down, antisemite.
Talking this for month. It takes some time, but as Russia's economy is knitted (very weak and depending on oil and gas sales, some steel and wood) very simple. Everyone with a economic background and some knowledge about Russia does know the downfall, a bad one, will come. China and India can't take away the losses Russia takes of the losses of the export/import scissor it has. And I don't think luxury goods play a big role in that, it's more of the dependence on imports and support for its Western build automation what produces the rest of the needed goods. The summary of all of this is the explosive what will blow of Russia's economy! And, China's nor India's interest lay in dealing with Russia! Both want to deal with the West. Because Europes import/export volume was ten times higher than that of Russia - China was.
Historically sanctions seems to be an ineffective political tool on its own. Look at countries like Cuba, North Korea, Iran. Sure, sanctions hurt their economy, but they still survive, they grow, they spend most their money on the military to defend themselves against the countries imposing the sanctions as their relationship keeps getting worse year by year and the common people there hates us more and more. What is the point?
During this destructive race who will crack first? Russia or Europe. It,s not like there are no consequences here?
What a brilliant illuminating discussion. Please have this presentation on a regular basis. DW produces really interesting programs. Thank you.

Excellent reporting DW and professor. Sonnenfeld. I especially appreciate the work the professor and his team from Yale are doing to dispell the 'sanctions are not working' myth. I am also inspired to do some further research to identify one or more the 240 corporations who have chose to remain and keep business as usual operations in Russia. I don't know what product Huntsman Chemical Co. to see if there is a product they make can be taken off my purchase list.
Some lubricants, maybe?))
Huntsman makes chemicals that are used inany industries - petrochemical, plastics, pharmaceutical, etc.
In fact look up John Huntsman. I believe he may have been Utah's governor and has run for other offices before - including president.
"The sanctions are not working" myth! They are working fine but they are destroying Europe not Russia. Still a "Win" for the USA who see us as a competitor, not an ally.
Stop using the Internet and mobile networks. The vast majority of hardware and fibre optics in the world comes from China and about 35% of the energy needed to run them comes from Russian oil and gas. Or is it only other people who will have to make sacrifices?

Thank you for this informative interview. It's refreshing to hear someone quote his sources sont week-end can fact check them. Thank you Prof. Sonnenfeld.
Idk ove to go to his classes.
Knows their subject matter well? Is that why everything he said turned out to be wrong? ahahahahaaa
very good and interesting interview
A lively and informative interview. Rob Watts knows his stuff. And Jeffrey Sonnenfeld knows even more stuff. You aren't likely to see this level of analysis on CNN or MSNBC, and you sure as heck won't see it on Fox.
Thank you, Dr Sonnenfeld. Your insights are invaluable! 😊
Outstanding presentation.
Brilliant Interview
Informative, thank you.
Great interview! Have him on more please!
