I obviously misspoke when I said the "Ionic Order" when describing the columns on the exterior of the home. I meant to say Corinthian Order. The subtitles are correct and it even says Corinthian Order in the script I wrote! 😅 Enjoy the rest of the video!

This is probably the most restrained and modest of all of the Vanderbilt mansions and my favorite, particularly the "approach" drive from the main road winding up through the property and cresting the hill to reveal the house overlooking the river. It's actually more like a house than a palatial "show off" property. The Vanderbilts were rather shy and introverted and weren't much for extravagant parties or gatherings and were known for their charitable works and Christmas gatherings for the local children. The setting for this house has the most amazing views of the Hudson River and the Hudson River Valley. Spectacularly beautiful on a late summer or early fall day
My father "Robert B King" has written two books on the Vanderbilt Homes , and I had enjoyed visiting this home a few times with him while he took Photos for his book. Great beautiful History..
I grew up across the street from Vanderbilt Mansion and actually worked there as child volunteering as an interpretive aid one of the first in the whole country when the National Park service began using them. I was honored to do it for some 3 years. I got to meet people from all over the world and it was great. I still live in the area and walk and jog the grounds some 44 years later. Loved the history. As a side note FDR's secret service men were housed than when he was president. Thanks for posting.
Wow that’s fascinating. A friend of mine grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. The Vanderbilts still lived in Biltmore then and he played there as a child. Great stories about that castle.

If you're planning to go there, make time to visit the home of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt, which is also a National Park and historic site. They are both located in the town of Hyde Park.

I lived in dutchess county and visited this home many times per year ,,,beautiful views of the river and there formal gardens were amazing ,,with annual plant sales from cuttings of the formal gardens !!!!!!!!!

This estate is truly magnificent. It also has an unusual feature. Since this estate is situated on a small peninsular sticking out into the Hudson, when you drive in to the estate, you immediately go over the original New York Central (the Vanderbilt's railroad and fortune source) tracks. All other estates on the river's eastern shore are cut off from the river by the railroad. One of the estates in a prior video, Lyndhurst, still has the structure for the bridge built to go over the tracks so that Jay Gould could get to his yacht without walking over his rival's tracks. I hope that you are planning a video on another estate mentioned in this video (though highly reconfigured from the photo shown here): the Mills Mansion just up the road in Staatsburg, NY. Another excellent video.
By no means does this property “stick out” into the Hudson nor is it a peninsula (maybe by definition) but the small crumb elbow creek runs through it. This would be similar to referring to North America as an island.
@@Bdigital9482 I never said the property was the Cape Cod of the Hudson, but the railroad was laid in a straight as possible line where it's all alone the eastern bank of the river except for here where it's just inside the estate off of the road (done long before Frederick Vanderbilt bought the property). Ergo, it sticks out into the river. This is per the docents at the estate.
@@Bdigital9482 I have not been out that way in almost 40 years, and someone just correctly pointed out that I was confusing this estate with the Mills mansion in Staatsburg. My apologies.

I just visited it this summer… the grounds are really beautiful..so glad this is a protected historic place
My dad told me that my grandfather would have beers with roosevelt in the libary when he was in town and that he loved reading the books...was always here as a kid sleding to fishing to biking and hikingand the tour was always great and mills mansion is also a beautiful place as well

I toured the mansion a few times as we used to live nearby (several decades ago). The property is next door to FDR's mansion although there is quite a distance between each mansions. They are located in Hyde Park, NY. The Vanderbilt mansion is quite impressive! Thanks for the video!
I grew up and lived near vanerbilts😃. I shamelessly took advantage of the vast gardens& river views! I live in nm now and miss it so very much!
The grounds are still there & I walk them often. It is still beautiful & well kept

Actually, Frederick wanted the older mansion updated and expanded, but after the architects examined it, they told Frederick that the old mansion was too structurally unsound and recommended a new and much larger house in a similar style. BTW, there is no such thing as an "Islamic Rug." There are Persian Rugs, or Turkish rugs, etc.
...unless they're islamic prayer rugs?

Super beautiful inside that makes you feel your living on that decade. I live in Poughkeepsie NY and I love to go to Hyde Park. Nice place to walk...exercise or meditate.
Visited there in 75 it is amazing.
Another great example of preservation and valuing great architecture, history and national heritage…God bless President Roosevelt for the many great things…that he did…for us all 😊 🇺🇸

The beauty of this house goes so well with the beauty of the surrounding landscape. How could someone with such a house live there for only a small part of the year? I would make it my year-round home. Maybe it's just my imagination but there seems to be a good presence or quality to the Hyde Park mansion. I've seen one or two pictures of the house that was torn down to make room for the present house. It was quite a bit like the White House in Washington, D.C., but a little more ornate. I'd love to see a video about that house but I wonder if enough documentation exists for such a project. Ken, this may not line up with what your channel is about but here goes: Would you ever consider making videos about ocean liners? They were mansions at sea and and had beautiful interiors in both public spaces such as the loungs and dining rooms and in private spaces such as the suites and staterooms. There was the Victorian or Edwardian beauty of such ships as the Olympic and Titanic and later the Art Deco of the Ile de France and Normandie and the New Realism (I think that's the term) of the Bremen and Europa, a modern but not exactly Art Deco style.

Some interesting facts about the house FDR's house was next door once the house was acquired FDR used it as a overflow and guesthouse for important guest . The basement, attic and service areas were used to house , feed , etc for FDRs secret service team .. I might be mistaken, when I toured the house recall hearing the center cut out section was a after thought due to the the darkness of the house . It was a very comfortable , nothing like the other gilt loaded homes of the age . Again a memory of the tour I think Vanderbilt received MUCH less in inheritance than his siblings because of his choice of wife . And at the time of his death he was one the the wealthiest family members ,not squandering his wealth like the rest of the family . Thanks for you excellent work . There is a bridge over the tracks but it is seldom available to ride over. The place you describe is the Mills Mansion aka-Norrie Mills State park

I've been there. It's beautiful.
I live across the Hudson River and visited many times over the years, one year the place was undergoing repairs to the exterior because large chunks of concrete where falling from the top floor, Federal government not doing its job for a long time.

Many years ago my family and I visited the mansion. First thing that came out of my teenagers mouth was that it felt like a mausoleum.
Vanderbilt house was bought by government & not torn down. amother close call
so glad it wasn’t demolished!
FDR. Yet just one more reason why that man will always be one of the best America presidents! Preserving our heritage is important, I am so grateful he was able to help preserve the place.
He mostly did it because his place is about a mile or two away from the Vanderbilt house and he didn't want the wrong sort of people to move into the neighborhood. Noveau riche types might have snapped it up, instead of "old money" people.😁
I visited last year. It was beautiful. We couldn’t go upstairs though.
2:41 and 2:45 and 2:53 the tapestry (or rug, not sure what that is) has the same design in the center, and there are more than one in more than one room. I think that is cool. They like it enough they put in more than one spot in the house. I wonder if they were from a well known maker of the time and it was a way of showing off by being able to display more than one piece in more than one area of the house? Or it symbolizes something to the family. Do you know anything about that?
if you look, what I am talking about is right above the fireplace in the first picture. I know that the background details on them are different, but there are five dark colored balls placed in a pattern in the center of each, and they are the same. Maybe I am just blabbing and everyone already knows what I am saying, but I am curious. There is a crown above each one, is this them trying to "establish" a coat of arms?
you said it...its the Medici coat of arms. The Medici coat of arms is not just in the fireplaces, but on the tapestries on the walls in a couple other rooms. (I have counted 3 tapestries so far)
The center openings was a later addition, they found the house to be dark . I thnk FDR had ulterior motives, he used the mansions attic a basements for secret service staffing . Additionally the rest of the house was FDR's overflow guest house . Its stunning

I loved Biltmore. I have travelled from Australia over many years and decided to visit every Vanderbilt mansion still standing over the years. Last on my list was Biltmore and it was totally amazing. No house I see will ever be as grand. I also decided to see all the Kennedy family homes??Don't ask me why!! I saw the last n Palm Beach in 2020. Next was to see every presidential library but doubt that will get finished now.
If this place is open to the public, why aren’t there any current interior photos?

I both grew up and live in Hyde Park NY. Vanderbilt is a beautiful place. Unfortunately, the rose garden was not shown. But to answer your question. They have been renovating for years . It's not worth taking the tour as about 70% of the furniture is covered up when you walk through. But I will say, even just walking the grounds will fill you up with envy.
I rather like this house. It is grand, to be sure, but it is on a somewhat more human scale. Thank you for the video!

When i visited the house was really run down. The park district had not kept the building or it furnishing up.
The exterior of the house has been fully cleaned and restored. There is also work going on inside now.

I think the family paid all the college and education of their employees children in addition to extreme generosity and pensions Of their employees . Certainly people ahead of their time . s

No they didn’t need them.
Of course they did. If you visit the mansion, the tour takes you into the bedrooms and you can see the bathrooms. When you leave, they take you downstairs through the areas where the servants worked and spent their time. There's a dining room for them, a big kitchen, a dumbwaiter to take the food upstairs, etc.

Why are the pictures in black and white? I think the stunningness is missed greatly without color
Because many of those pictures are very old and were taken before color photography was widely used. If you want to see the mansion in color, go to the website for it.

This is beautiful. Would Mayor Adams be able to talk to the National Park Service and allow our new immigrants to live there? 25 Families could live there it is already furnished and the children would love the gardens and park to play in. Good people would once again live in this house.
Mayor Adams has no jurisdiction over this mansion. It is located in Dutchess County, about 80 miles north of New York City. Since it is a National Park, it would take a federal law to change the way the building is used.
@@olga138 Thank you Olga I thought it may be just outside the city limits. Possibly the Dutchess County Executives could petition the President and Chuck Schumer to pass a law to allow the new immigrants to temporarily stay there for a short period of time 5 to 7 years.

This maintained building by the state, needs a serious power washing from top to bottom. The stone facade and detailing look filthy. They should be ashamed. That building could be used as a wonderful orphanage and school, to orphaned children of the state. What a waste.
Children who are orphaned are placed in foster care. I don't think NYS has orphanages any more. The mansion is owned and maintained by the National Park Service, and when Congress votes them sufficient funds, they do as much maintenance as they can. It does not look dirty in person---it is quite well-maintained.
