  • If the "air shafts" we not open at the ends, how did they figure out where they were to "open" them? What external mark or surface indicated that they were there prior to 1872?

    @michaelnorthan5981@michaelnorthan59813 ай бұрын
    • I think someone noticed a crack between two of the blocks in the wall and started exploring with a wire, and discovered that there was open space behind it. So they then cut through the stone. (And then checked to see if there was the same thing on the other side). To me the existence of the crack suggests that the block hiding the shaft was not part of the original construction, but a later add-on, since the original builders would have designed it and the neighboring blocks in such a way that they would all be stable together.

    • I thought the ones in the two chambers were discovered accidentally, just probing around the walls, and then checked to see if one was on the opposite side. I'm not sure but I think only one set actually reaches to the outside of the pyramid (the Kings Chamber?), and that the other pair stop a few feet short before getting there? One set looks to be carved out of pink granite for some reason, the other just plain granite, but with a dark stain on the lower sides going up? It's very exciting to get some answers that should have come out when that little probe "Upuaut"(sic?) was sent up the shafts in the 90s.
