Here's my essay of why Messi was always clear. Not due to a WC win, CL wins, Balon D'Or wins or league titles. He was clear because he's the only playmaker that has scored so many goals and the only striker that has given so many assists, in 1 package. He is clear due to his dribbling, passing, vision, positioning, runs, pace (in his prime), consistency (and the ability to adapt his play style at 35 after losing pace). Also due to his hard work ethic, he used to struggle with his weight, got a dietitian and gained a bunch of muscle mass. His balance and strength are also underrated. He fends off strong defenders and stays on his feet. He managed to outrun and outdribble a huge and fast Croatian defender that was having the tournament of his life (with Messi at 35 years old). He used to do the same all the time vs Pepe, Ramos, showed it against Vidic and Ferdinand, also vs Nesta, Cannavaro and he made Boateng fall to the ground like a sack of potatoes. The narrative that he's just pure talent is also silly. He kept working hard on his freekicks and physicality throughout his career. His freekicks kept only improving. His strength became a solid aspect of his game. Just look how well balanced he is when loads of defenders try tackling him. It's almost like he's immune to them. He feints, dribbles and twist and turns them silly. I don't know why people couldn't see this during a 15 year long career. So many iconic La Liga matches. Iconic Champions League matches and also iconic World Cup matches. He reached the final in 2014 with a mediocre Argentinian squad. He had to count on players like Garay, Biglia and Higuain was shooting every 100% chance out of the stadium. He carried them towards the final and lost against the most overpowered German squad ever with 1-0. While he still did his thing in that tournament. Scored, assisted, dribbled etc. He showcased his entire arsenal of skill and won the Golden Ball of that tournament. Comparing him to Ronaldo was always flawed. Don't get me wrong, Ronaldo is spectacular. But Ronaldo just had the bad luck of being a part of Messi's generation. Prime Ronaldo was fast, had spectacular skill moves, quick handling, destructive power, fitness, physicality. However Ronaldo doesn't have the play making aspect of the game. He's ''merely'' a striker. While Messi can play in the attack and on the midfield. He is a Xavi/Iniesta/Ronaldo(goal scoring wise), Pirlo, Zidane, Modric, Kroos in 1. Messi can do what Ronaldo does (score a lot) but also do more than that (assist, pass, out dribble entire defences) and better than anyone else. Messi also has won more trophies but that really doesn't matter imo because those trophies are won by an entire team. Even the Balon d'or isn't really an individual award when you think about it. You still need teammates that enable you to play in the right conditions. So all I'm looking at is the talent and work ethic that's been consistently displayed throughout an amazing career and that shows me that Messi is the absolute, undisputed GOAT. Far surpassing anyone I've ever seen.

The size of Mbappe makes it harder for him to act like Messi. Mbappe is a very good player and for sure has the potential to become world-class for his era, but you can't beat Messi. Messi in his younger years was crazy at dribbling and still does. Lacks a bit on Temp because of age. As well as his out-of-box shots. Last but not least as he got older, the more he looked into making plays with other players, the assist he got against the Nederlands shows that. In my opinion, Messi is levels higher then Mbappe, but Mbappe has a different play style so it's hard to compare both.

Don't think this will change people's minds. Either you prefer one or the other. You can prefer Ronaldo over Messi and still think Messi is a better footballer than Ronaldo. As a Madridista myself I will always back Ronaldo no matter what happens until the end of their careers. Huge respect to Messi, he is probably the greatest ever, I just prefer Ronaldo. Messi has matched ronaldos goals all the way despite not poaching them half his career like ronaldo. smashed him in terms of assists and all the while he’s been producing magic every single game. Ronaldo has champions leagues over him which are a teams achievement. I won’t go into the ballon dors because even though messi has more its more of a popularity contest for me.
