In Taiz, Yemen, hundreds of children arrive for lessons each day in the ruins of a school near front-line fighting between the government and Houthi rebels.
Ahmed, a nine-year-old boy who has been blind since birth, steps in to teach classes when the teachers can't make it.
One in every five Yemeni schools is out of use, according to Unicef. But at this one, teachers decided to open it despite the damage, so that education could continue.

I can't believe I didn't appreciate my time in school.
Same. I feel ashamed.
And here I was complaining about having a short leg on my desk , let’s all take a moment to appreciate the blessings we have
I could NOT agree with you more! I'm grateful for EVERYTHING and hope I'm always able to see the magic in life. These kids are beautiful!
What is short leg??
@@sudarshan3965 so tables and chairs are held up usually by 4 chair legs , but if one leg is shorter than the others it causes the table/ chair to be unbalanced
@@gangstalicious1901 oh. I thought you have one leg half amputed. I am sorry.

Millions starving in Yemen and the world just watches and shakes its head
Yes.They all deserve better life in the west.
@d the best , Shut up. The West has a lot to do with this you fool. You forgot about the WMD fake War , the Oil, Supplying the regimes with Arms aswell as training them to fight their neighbours. People like you are ignorant , No one Owns this World , we all die and take nothing with us but the footprints we have left behind.
@d the best , no one wants that but a few militant groups that have now been destroyed, the same militants that were trained by the CIA. Most muslims just wanna live in peace.
Nothing much can be done except monetarily support the charities providing relief to these people. That region has always been a hotbed of war and crime since time immemorial. Now because of weapons such as bombs and automatic rifles that destruction has only increased at a faster rate.
Sadly the world is focused on a more important issue being Prince Harry & Megan...
this young man is a bright light
Yes, however due to the war if he does, but god forbid to protect him. He won't have a future then.
Yes. I agree. please Help!!! Hello. Please view on face book if able the group and page , The World Cares Yemen, of active ongoing ways to start helping some there now. Active charities. that can reach. some more with more donations, awareness. Petitions, Articles and Videos etc. Also, on the internet I recommend Mona Relief. And Yemen Relief and reconstruction foundation. Both exclusively for and in Yemen. This is very Urgent!!! The news has stated that fifty percent of the population, Civilians of Yemen will be dead by the end of June without urgent response is needed now. Also, can maybe hold some fundraisers with your family, friends, etc. ? Would you, please refer some or all of the above to some people near you? Each who read this, if able. ❤
Boy o boy... That guy has sight beyond his limits
I can’t tell if this is incredibly sad or incredibly inspirational. Let’s go with inspirational. The kids seem so buoyant and humble, despite living in probably the most dangerous conditions in the world right now.
It’s both, a 9 year shouldn’t have to take responsibility of an adult, let alone a blind one. The British Government make me sick for its continued arms contracts with Saudi Arabia who pointlessly bomb countries like this.
@George Stark Yeah thats exactly what i meant, everyone forget about yemen and the UK funding saudi arabia, shows over guys
@@johnholmes2745 You seems really focused on Saudi Arabia and The British, Why not see the other side as well who's supporting those terrorist Houthi rebel's who keeps kidnapping civilian's and using them as shield's and war crimes, Did i mention their flag as well? Let's read it together shall we It says "Allah is greater, Death to America, Death to Israel, Curse on the Jews, Victory to Islam, Hmm seems really peaceful group they are definitely won't do any war crimes against their own country they definitely didn't kill their own president as well, Next time look at both sides and judge for yourself who's in the wrong here,

This is heartbreaking, made me cry. Children deserve to be children. I am in awe of how these kids continue to go to school. Education (and seeing their friends), - the importance of having some form of continuity is so important even in this pandemic yet alone a war zone. The kid teaching is amazing, bless him. They still have hope despite their circumstances. As an educator, it serves as a reminder of the hope that education brings.
I wish people would spend less money on lavish things and instead fund causes like this.
It’s sickening to see people dying from severe obesity when there are kids starving over there
@Joe Marley So just because their religious views differs from yours yemen should be reduced to near-famine condition ? What a selfish thing to say. You think these kids dont want the very freedom that you had, are they not entitled to that as human beings. Why because they are a different color than you their lives and dreams dont matter. Whose giving arms to saudi arabia in the first place.
I bet no one in the comments has done anything to help. You talk about it. You won’t do anything though.
@Joe Marley you've got so much hate brother. Watch out lest it gobbles you down
@@fascinatinglist9654 Don't worry their "God", which they so admire, will help them. "He" seems to work in mysterious ways. Let's not meddle in "His" ways.
Here we are, watching videos on KZhead while these kids don't even have a safe ceiling on top of their heads... life ist really unfair.

When Ahmed got hiccup bcs of those sound, my heart is broken. That boy really got ptsd (and many other children there) May Allah protect them all
Such an inspirational young kid. Bless
Ahmed is a real hero he deserves a pride of Britain overseas award and much more help for his school. The kids in this country just do not realize how lucky they are.
He and family should be relocated to UK !!! He can study in braille and get to be whatever he wants ,!!!!!
Actually brought a tear to my eye watching this 😢
What a great soul!
what an amazing number of children and teachers, their courage is so inspiring, and i wish we as collective richer nations would give them the tools to at least have their basic needs met and even more, why we are punishing such young bright and courageous people i just don't know, senseless
Yemen has to be the only middle eastern country to be continually betrayed by the West, East, South, North and the Middle Eastern countries.... what did they do so bad to deserve this horrendous treatment....
The problem is with the people themselves, they’re on drugs daily All of them!

They exiled Gods chosen ones like all the other Middle Eastern countries that got regime changed.

UK should be embarrassed for part played
@Jay Em cheers for stating the obvious, no one was blaming "the population" as you put it, I am part of the UK public.
GOD BLESS THIS BOY AND ALL his classmates
Ahmed is an inspiration. This is an amazing story. I watched the original clip on BBC America; when school was over Ahmed and his sister (who also is blind) walk home together led by a six or seven year old student whom Ahmed lovingly calls his car. Heartbreaking.
My beautiful country 😢 god bless these children their hearts are strong and positive
To think of what twisted devices could turn humans to cause such damage, destroying nations and leaving children destitute in ruined schools. That young child has had so much taken from him; he’s angelic in his repose and desire to make the world a better place. Adults that wage war could learn from the innocent desires of children, without all the ugliness that can come with years of selfishness.
That's very dangerous! That building could collapse anytime. I think for the meantime it's safer in the field like under a tree.
The fact he has pure enthusiasm is Awesome
When the student becomes the teacher
In all this turmoil, they shine!
Brave childrens
What an inspiration
Wars are full of needless atrocities and the most vulnerable pay the heaviest price. Prayers to these beautiful innocent children.
What an angel
All of these babies are so PRECIOUS.
This is so sad. No little kid should have to go through this, they didn’t do anything. They just want to learn and play, they shouldn’t have to be scared of being killed.
OMG what if that building falls down? Bless his Heart, how do I send money to him?
This is heart-wrenching
And there's people who don't appreciate the value of school, it just breaks my heart and I'm sure of those millions of others
This boy deserves the world
This is utterly inspirational
Reading all of the letters many like myself want to help this child and his school , so where do we send some money that will not go to buy more arms. But will go to help him and his friends. Malcolm Abbott
Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF)
I see future mechanical-electrical- civil- engineers, artists, youtubers, doctors, teachers lawyers in this kids.
This kid looks like a wise figure, almost like a prophet. I actually feel moved
Oh Ahmed bless you and your class. I am so heartbroken and failing to sleep after watching this video. So sad what these children are going through but they remain positive and strong. Very inspirational .Thank you so much BBC. The world is watching and busy building mansions yet children have no basic needs. Heartless humanity has gone to the pit. Who can I give the money to buy books ,lights etc for them. Can someone please let me know how I can help. Thank you
I feel sad for myself and empty. Bravo for this kid!
Oh my, this should be shown to all the disengaged students in our western schools. They might realise how privileged they are to have the benefits of our education systems. This broke my heart. These beautiful children put their lives on the line every day to get an education. Ahmed, what an inspirational little treasure you are!
What an amazing young boy!
That's so sad
Misfortunes always happens to good people and countries. Yemen is my favourite Arab city and neighbor. Very sad indeed .

what a great teacher!blind boy. wishing your dream becoming ture in near future!
How can you dislike this?
I would like to send some money to help rebuild the school. This child is just wonderful he deserves all the help he can get. But where could I send it. Malcolm.
Allah bless him, God bless him.

Well...... How life is beyond my borders.........Honestly cannot really understand how cruel life can be.
I thought the title was a typo. I wish it were. 😕
how much we still have to learn...
I pray for all of those less fortunate then us,that can only dream of having the things that we do easily ignore for example running water whenever want or the simple thing of having a safe place where we aren’t in constant fear. I pray that God enters the hearts of those who are more fortunate and encourages them to give to those who aren’t and I pray we all learn to love each other no matter sexuality, race, religion or age. Love is love amen

Why?
Where are UN and UNICEF?
Where can I educate myself more on this situation? Anyone
God save them
I enjoyed seeing this. A nice smart boy he is
And yet these people are called terrorists?
To BBC ---- can you guys tell me of an organization that is helping these children? Maybe rebuild their school? Provide salaries to teachers? Help children like Ahmed? Is it a UN body like UNICEF? It would be great if you can pinpoint this as I'm sure there are so many people who would like to help them in one way or another. Thanks.
If anyone wants to give to the Yemen schools situation, what is genuinely the best charity/aid organisation whereby the vast majority (if not all) the money given actually reaches the frontline need?
I cannot fathom for the life in me why massive corporations and their insanely rich owners don't do more to help those you truly need it. They literally have more money than they know what to do with. Along with governments they could solve the crisis' that so many innocent, good, beautiful people suffer from. It breaks my heart and makes me so angry. If the opportunity ever knocks for me to in anyway meaninfully help i would do it in a second. What the hell is this world, seriously how can this be possible
may allah give them the best inshallah
Man, sometimes we have to grow up way too fast..
Feel so bad for these children and the Yemeni people. Trying to have a decent life, learn and innocently coexist in this broken world, yet they have to experience the brutality by rebel groups in the area. Navigate around landmines, crossfire, bombings and constant raids. On top of that, famine stretches throughout the country and the reliance on foreign assistance is substantial.
Brilliant bbc
I don't know what to say..
Maybe it time to reflect on ourselves and improve our characters and manners even the children are wiser than adults these days. I would rather have a wise child running the country than a man who is taken over by pride and ego's and desires.

Is there a way for.us to reach out and help them. Yemen does not deserve this
I guess u can stop supporting uae and saudi on their quest to bomb yemen to stone age.
except I aint from the west......please tell your western buddies to back off
Please please please speak about protests in algeria please and walid nakkiche what happened to him please
Excellent reporting by Orla Guerin and the film crew. So, why has the UK Government cut the aid to Yeman by 59%? This is no way to show leadership by example.
Who attempts to destroy Yemen?
Ngl I thought the person writing the headline had a stroke or something cause damn that's long
Turkey,Pakistan should help this people.where are they?have they blindfolded their eyes?hope peace comes in this earth.this earth would be totally different without weapons.but is that possible?
So sad, so sad the west does not give a damn about what's happening in Yemen.
Thank almighty if u have roof over ur head, favourite food and little wish are fulfilled.
Excuse me whaaaaaaaaaat?
Canada and Australia should take them they have tiny population.
Thanks to the US and UK for arms supply and expertise to the Saudis fuelling the none end war . When the War started in Ukraine automatically stopped in Yamen that tells you the efforts converted to another profitable war .
stop being cowards to business and money. keep telling people about yemen and say who's doing it. because we know who's attacking yemen. we know which nation.
This is why the arms trade needs to be put down and sanctions preventing food and medicine getting in need to be lifted. Australia, America, the UK, and every other country who continues to self weapons for profit has an ocean of blood on their hands. Politicians and businessmen aren't going to change that so until we’re all in the streets protesting this, destroying weapon shipments before they can be sold, and holding our governments accountable, we are all complicit
Lol gj giving them freedom US/Saudi
The uk is helping to fund Saudi aswell
Here is where the US can show us what a great power is. A most militia country in the world only to make everything themselves priority. As a leader of the world, A responsibility should be taken without someone else’ reminding.
Thanks to the US and UK for arms supply and expertise to the Saudis .
