The coconut is known to be the fruit or tree of life for its refreshing juice and nourishing flesh within the shell. This tale tells the legend of how the coconut and coconut tree came to be with the beautiful story of the legendary 'Sina and Tuna'. There are many versions of this age old legend or fagogo from Samoa, this is but one version that makes up the tapestry of tales from the Pacific.

  • This is such a skewed version of the legend! The Eel was never a stalker. Both the eel and Sina were always friends. Sina's brothers just didn't like the fact that she befriended an eel - it was unnatural. In the old days it was the duty of the men in the village especially the brothers to protect the virtue of their young women and they didn't like the fact that Sina was spending all of her time with the eel. The Eel acknowledged that his life would be forfeit so he had Sina promise that she would bury his head in the ground and from it would sprout the symbol of his everlasting love for her. From the head sprung forth the coconut tree and when you husk the coconut tree the actual nut will have three holes. only one of the holes is soft enough to pole a hole in - symbolizing the eels mouth. So, women would drink from the mouth symbolizing a kiss. And, men would crack the nut open to drink from it. The eels symbol of love represents the Samoan ideal of love (this is a Samoan Legend By the way). The Samoan concept of love is -- you not only care for the woman you love - but, in addition to that, you also prove your love by caring for her family. The coconut not only served it's purpose for Sina but it has also blessed Samoan familes for hundreds of years with its life sustaining water. The Eel loved Sina that much!

  • The telling of the legend and its many versions of it, is not as important as the meaning of the story. The love that the eel (or tuna ) had for Sina was so much that he gave his life, not only for her, but all of mankind. It reminds me of how Jesus gave His life so that we might have life....now this was not a legend....but a true story...

  • Animation was on point.... Ao le kala sa'o lea a le kala fakakau ia Siga ma le kuga -The story goes that the Eel was the King of Fiji which back then believed to have had "Maga" or Magic. The Eel had heard of a beautiful maiden name Sina and planned on pursuing but thing was that the King of Fiji or Kui Fiki was OLDER than Sina so he decided that it was best to transform himself into a Eel.So he did,the rest of the story goes on but it is known that the Eel was a bit obsessed with Sina and spyed on her bathing which created the samoan phrase "Maka a le alelo" from when she saw him watching her, little did she know who the Eel actually was. They became friends and accompanied each other down the line for years. The Eel got older and the Kings magic got weaker. He finally revealed himself to Sina, telling her that who he is and that his time is coming. His final request to her was to cut of his headband planting it in the ground. And from this sprouted that first coconut tree in the Samoan islands but yeah he did tell her that when you see a coconut that is his face. The story was mainly to explain how the coconut has a face like thing and to explain how the coconut came to the Samoan islands

  • It was also told to me a very similar story of an eel and a princess of Samoa. That spoke of Samoa being divided into 7 families 7 dialects. That the princess was told by the eel to find a suitable husband/ chief and to have a baby with each of them. To have a royal blood line to keep these 7 families 7 dialects as the true chiefs royals of Samoa. And they still exist today.
