The coconut is known to be the fruit or tree of life for its refreshing juice and nourishing flesh within the shell. This tale tells the legend of how the coconut and coconut tree came to be with the beautiful story of the legendary 'Sina and Tuna'. There are many versions of this age old legend or fagogo from Samoa, this is but one version that makes up the tapestry of tales from the Pacific.

This is such a skewed version of the legend! The Eel was never a stalker. Both the eel and Sina were always friends. Sina's brothers just didn't like the fact that she befriended an eel - it was unnatural. In the old days it was the duty of the men in the village especially the brothers to protect the virtue of their young women and they didn't like the fact that Sina was spending all of her time with the eel. The Eel acknowledged that his life would be forfeit so he had Sina promise that she would bury his head in the ground and from it would sprout the symbol of his everlasting love for her. From the head sprung forth the coconut tree and when you husk the coconut tree the actual nut will have three holes. only one of the holes is soft enough to pole a hole in - symbolizing the eels mouth. So, women would drink from the mouth symbolizing a kiss. And, men would crack the nut open to drink from it. The eels symbol of love represents the Samoan ideal of love (this is a Samoan Legend By the way). The Samoan concept of love is -- you not only care for the woman you love - but, in addition to that, you also prove your love by caring for her family. The coconut not only served it's purpose for Sina but it has also blessed Samoan familes for hundreds of years with its life sustaining water. The Eel loved Sina that much!
whoops I said "husk the coconut tree" haha..I meant coconut!
thanks
Solomona F Nuusa it's not even a legend, it's just a bedtime story senior folks used to tell their grandchildren.
@@fsj2200 guess you didn’t grow up in the islands
Was the eel a Prince from Fiji? I hear that a lot. Just asking
we have the same story in Fiji good to hear it again.. vinaka USO..
Bc of the eel
"I killed an eel, I buried its guts. Sprouted a tree, now you've got coconuts." - Moana (2016)
areasevenpro that was maoi he is actually the dad of moana
WRONG. Moana's father is Tui. And it's Maui, not "maoi".
Watt can I say except your welcome
Maui in Moana movie is half pig half hippo
I know about maui because I read books about him like maui and, maui fish's up the north island, maui and the fire woman!!! Theses even more ive but thats all im gonna tell you!!.
The telling of the legend and its many versions of it, is not as important as the meaning of the story. The love that the eel (or tuna ) had for Sina was so much that he gave his life, not only for her, but all of mankind. It reminds me of how Jesus gave His life so that we might have life....now this was not a legend....but a true story...
I’m from a tiny poly island called Rotuma that is governed by Fiji and my culture is similar to the Samoan and Tongans. Mostly Samoan and this is one of the many legends we grew up knowing.
I remember that I hear a similar story in samoan class.
Animation was on point.... Ao le kala sa'o lea a le kala fakakau ia Siga ma le kuga -The story goes that the Eel was the King of Fiji which back then believed to have had "Maga" or Magic. The Eel had heard of a beautiful maiden name Sina and planned on pursuing but thing was that the King of Fiji or Kui Fiki was OLDER than Sina so he decided that it was best to transform himself into a Eel.So he did,the rest of the story goes on but it is known that the Eel was a bit obsessed with Sina and spyed on her bathing which created the samoan phrase "Maka a le alelo" from when she saw him watching her, little did she know who the Eel actually was. They became friends and accompanied each other down the line for years. The Eel got older and the Kings magic got weaker. He finally revealed himself to Sina, telling her that who he is and that his time is coming. His final request to her was to cut of his headband planting it in the ground. And from this sprouted that first coconut tree in the Samoan islands but yeah he did tell her that when you see a coconut that is his face. The story was mainly to explain how the coconut has a face like thing and to explain how the coconut came to the Samoan islands
@@malachi7948 I was told that as well.... but more of a tape story whilst she was bathing in the waterhole. Old wives tales that lots of samoans islanders told.
So basically, the eel is a "nice guy"
No. The eel was a creep and a stalker.
Lol
Simp🤣 Well its a joke dont need to take it srsly
Idk
Yes!
I remember being brought up in the islands (Fiji) and being taught the Legend of Sina and the Eel in our school curriculum and through oral history. Bula to Aotearoa, Tonga, Hawai'i, Samoa, Tahiti and y'all others. Lets embrace our culture.
Thanks to the eel we now have coconut. Love this story.
I am Samoan and my grandparents said when they were young growing up in Western Samoa the story was always told as "Sina and The Tuna". I'm not trying to a fend anyone. But growing up my grandmother always told me the story of Sina and The Tuna
Tuna is the Samoan word for eel.
i read this legend back in fiji when i was in primary school,, memories just came back :)
Yes.."The Stories for us" book in class 5
Animation style is so damn dope. Simplistic and fluid, has a stencil-graffiti style to it that bridges a cultural heritage feel with a fresh, modern look. Really dig it. Excellent work to the team who created this! Malo lava! -jp
this is a beautiful work of art, thank you to the its creator. Lets not bring down the video by making comments in regards to its accuracy, lets appreciate it for what it is. Sina's story is well known, and told by many. Her story has been passed down through the generations, its natural to hear different versions of Sina. I hope to see more videos like this!
Good to see a story i heard in primary school brought life. I Miss the islands and the story’s that’s been pass down in generations will live on.
my mum came from the village of sina and I remember the story from years long since passed.
Where bouts is the village of Sina?
It was also told to me a very similar story of an eel and a princess of Samoa. That spoke of Samoa being divided into 7 families 7 dialects. That the princess was told by the eel to find a suitable husband/ chief and to have a baby with each of them. To have a royal blood line to keep these 7 families 7 dialects as the true chiefs royals of Samoa. And they still exist today.
Nice background song, also thanks for making other legend videos! :3
This always has been my favorite story from Polynesia. #MahalonuiLoa
polynesian storys are so touching
I remember my dad telling me this story when I was younger lol but I don't remember him saying the eel was a stalker?LMAO
in fiji we used to hear this stories from our grandfathers
wonderful legend, thanks
JOHN SINA
haha nice one
so funny!!
Ben Petana - Taumeasina. Give it a listen, it talks about Sina and the eel. It’s a good song !

This is a really good story
This is a great animation
Faafetai tele lava, tears in my eyes remembering in that
Ive heard this story many many time when I was a child. Told in many different way. But cool they made a video now.
That was cool
Woaw c'est à peu près la même legende qu'à Wallis...la princesse et l'anguille.
I recalled a few landmarks in Samoa named after this legend of Sina & Tuna, likewise Taumeasina, Vaiana, Faleolefe'e, Tanugamanono I'a-ole-vai, Mataolealelo...
thank you.
He sounded like Mr Myaki from the Karate kid 😂😂
Legit thought the same thing and the Asian sounding flute just makes it more like karate movie. Lol
frick 🤣🤣🤣
WHat is the music in the backround, thank you!
say what is the name of the instrumental playing in the background please?? really nice
Cute story I liked the ending. P 3 P
Love this story. Is there more like this & the shark & turtle story
I grew up with a different version and here is how it goes a young fijian guy did something wrong or didn't follow protocol and he was turned into the eel inorder for him to turn back he must earn the respect of the pipol he did wrong to or basically anyone that shares the bloodline and thats how he and sina became friends and later on the eel caught feelings for sina but sina was already betrothed to someone else and the eel told sina to cut his head for his heart and the rest is history for
nice story
LETS GO SAMOA!! SAMOA MY ONLY PELE🇦🇸💯
I read this in Class 5 in Fiji Primary School.
Aye thats what my grandmother use to tell us about the origin of coconuts. But in our legend it was a snake. Im from vanuatu btw.✌
What was the name of the snake?
Legend I am Samoa and cook island and new Zealand
This story is in the book "The Stories for us" for fifth grade if I'm right in Fiji...but I'm certain they are not using the book nowadays...
Some parts if the story hes saying is cap first he never battled anyone and also he just told sina he was a prince at the time sina went to her cousins for help
Ay I don’t remember the eel being a stalker 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
who can i give credit to for this animation?
what's the instrumentals in the background?
❤❤❤
That’s were the coconut tree came from. You can see the coconut shell shaped eyes, mouth and tail that’s the eel.
In Mona Maui sings "Your Welcome" and in one of the lines he says "I killed an eel, I buried its guts, sprouted a tree, now you got coconuts..." hmmm....
*Moana
Now this Sina and eel story 🏝 creepy. I'm scarred..
spending way to much time with that eel 😂 😂 lols
may i take a video for me to republish on youtube. it's better to ask permission than to take without permission
What happened 9 months ago between the eel and sina eyy?
i love watching samoa movies
We like this at school
Creppy stalker eel
Now every time I drink a coconut I feel like I’m kissing a eel. 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
😂
Same
Ive gotta eel
Why can't I watch this video?
Fiji roots of polynesia
So the eel would "go go nuts" for sina. HeHe no? Weh 🤣🤣🤣
the story was so sad
Its called a legend people so its not real and you can have your own version
the eel in the story most elders told us was king of Fiji Tui fiti idk where this eel came from lmao
Woww beautiful story lol samoa is rish with a culture
Would that make Maui, Sina's cousin?
Wow, that's a polynesian legend? It's got to be a myth like all stories. Although it was interesting.
LewisA According to the author, that is.
hi
Is this the same sina daughter of tagaloa that was left in fagasa when she was with liava'a?
Sina and the talking boto lol
I’m from Manu Samoa CHEEEEEEEHOOOOOOO sole
It's supposed to be The legend of the coconut 😁
Pei uma e ova le makaiku o le kuga...lol
I'm a samoa and I don't know if this story is an samoan
Ia o le kala i le keige o Siga ma le Kuga.
I grew up knowing the story and im Samoan
Isn’t sina Moana’s Mom in the movie
In the version of this legend I herd Maui the Demi god was sinas husband and he killed the earl and buried its guts
Wait wasn't it sina's husband that killed the eel
bloody sina betrayed the eels love 😢
Anyway, I love the art and storytelling except the “stalker” comment and the “Sav-aye-ee” instead of “Savai’i” pronunciation. Lol Now people will re-tell this story and say he was a stalker sole.
That's one crazy mixed up story. LOL. The eel to me represents the snake, Sina-is Eve. I would have no part of this fruit if it were a true story. Otherwise, it's an interesting tho warped concept.
Keriama Krueger dude, this is a Samoan story that has been passed down from generation to generation long before foreigners introduced the Bible to Samoans; it has nothing to do with Eve and the serpent.
So Coconuts that Samoans drink are basically from Fiji. Lol
No wonder Fijian boys always after us Samoan... Big thighs here we come
Lol! Takbo ang bata hahahah!😂
Moana brought me here
this is scary
Roi EEroooo lol
It wasn’t a good story compared what my Great grandma told me is a bit violent on this one I thought wan meant to be loved story tho
this is not the feol story
Moana parody?
I heard this crap long ago, and I didn't know whether to believe it or not..what is the true and real story of this Sina and the fuckn eel???
My carton I hate 4 toys
Sounds like Sina been playing with dido XD...lol
I hate the Eels they beat my Warriors Team...
Heard this story mutiple times as a kid and man observing this story properly as an adult, it seems to me that this story is about beastiality. How yuck.
You didnt hear about the prince did you
