China's ageing population: Can the country afford to grow old? | BBC News

China's leaders are trying to find ways to battle what many economists have described as a demographic ticking time bomb.
A slowing economy, shrinking government benefits and a decades-long one-child policy have created a creeping demographic crisis in Xi Jinping's China.
The pension pot is running dry and the country is running out of time to build enough of a fund to care for the growing number of elderly.
Over the next decade, about 300 million people, who are currently aged 50 to 60, are set to leave the Chinese workforce.
So can China afford to grow old?

  • China is fine with lower population. 1.4 billion was very high. So the population is in the process of decreasing, this was inevitable. Lower population growth is sign of progress of a civilization. Lesser population will require lesser land,resources and services.

    @cosmicwanderer891@cosmicwanderer891Ай бұрын
    • Actually when a population shrinks, the proportion of retired people increases, which means the country's workforce is smaller, and tax revenue for the government is proportionally lower. This happens at the same time that the financial cost of caring for elderly people continues to increase, because there's more and more old people in care homes. It's not "fine", it's actually highly damaging to a country's economy and will lead to a decreased quality of life for elderly people, because the country can't afford to give them the care and services that they need. The ability of the society to function disintegrates. It's already happening in Japan and South Korea, and the governments there are panicking because of how big a threat it is to the survival of their countries. Shrinking into nothing is not progress of a civilization. It's the end.

      @paradigm_recalescence@paradigm_recalescenceАй бұрын
    • @@paradigm_recalescence You are exaggerating. China has more than enough young,qualified workforce to sustain their current economic growth for several more decades. The problem before used to be too many college graduates and not enough jobs for them but now that problem will gradually be solved with the lower population growth. And providing pensions and other services to retirees will also not be a big problem as long as China maintains its current economic strength. You just have to do the math. The growth of Chinese population since the 1970s was abnormal. The drastic improvements in technology and medical care enabled the population to get ridiculously huge but that trend has ended. It was inevitable. Now since the Chinese on average are highly educated and have high living standards, the population is growing at a more normal level. An educated and rich population generally has lower population growth, this is trend everywhere in the world when a country is in process of becoming a developed country from a developing one. So yes, lower population growth is sign of progress of a civilization in this case.

      @cosmicwanderer891@cosmicwanderer891Ай бұрын
    • @@cosmicwanderer891 You really don't have any knowledge or understanding of what's actually happening in China right now. Their population is not "growing at a normal level", it's shrinking. Their population has shrunk 2 years in a row since 2022. This is not normal, and you're naive to think that it's normal. Do some research into the economic pain Japan and South Korea have already experienced because of population shrinking, and you'll begin to understand. The problem of too many college graduates in China is still present and it's getting worse. They stopped publishing youth unemployment data because it's getting so bad. "providing pensions and other services to retirees will also not be a big problem" That statement really speaks volumes about your understanding of basic economic principles. It's quite clear that you don't have any experience of how pensions schemes function. If a country shrinks so much that 75% of people are aged 70 and above, where do you think the tax revenue to provide for those elderly people going to come from? You done the math on that one? The fact that it's unsustainable is staring you in the face, but you can't see it. I can tell that you're very young, maybe 15-20 years old, so it's forgivable. Study more.

    • The Chinese government has reformed the pension schemes. There are three schemes for urban, rural and government people. The average pension in China in 2021 for rural residents is 129 yuan and for urban residents - 2.5 thousand yuan s). This social benefit is indexed annually. The growth rate of the average wage in the province is used as the input for the recalculation. Cost of living in rural areas is far less than urban areas. Rural residents also get free basic medical care and are also reimbursed for many other medical costs.

How to better take care our seniors should be discussed globally, it is not country-specific.Imagine what would happen to India when its current generation grows old. I believe the only way is a peace treaty amongst countries. I know it is far stretched but imagine how much resources can be saved if countries are not at throat of each other. I think NATO of the world in which one country is invaded means all are invaded can be the only model for us to survive. I am a believer of multilateralism. • The median age for China and its citizens is just under 40 years. For S.Korea it is 45 and Japan it is 49, The U.S and U.K are 39 and 40 respectively. Not a lot of difference between the latter two and China. Most Chinese citizens don't live from pay cheque to pay cheque because they save for the long term. Many also have private pensions. My wife is Chinese and she has paid into a private pension fund which she will receive when she turns 60. According to recent statistics, about 65% of retired persons in Taiwan have labour pensions of less than NT$20,000 per month. That’s only US$720. That’s less than the average monthly expenses per person in Taiwan. The U.K is raising the retirement age because there is not enough cash to pay pensions and the population has a slowing birth rate. S.Korea and Japan also have a demographic problem with few children being born.In the latest figures released by the S Korean government on Feb. 28, 2024 that number sunk to a new low-from 0.84 children per couple in 2022 to 0.81 in 2023. By 2024, the rate is projected to fall even further to 0.68. Japan’s fertility rate, which the average number of children per woman, is 1.3.

These are all countries with very low birth rates. You must know that this is based on the reality that China is the world's largest industrial country, and its industrial output value is the sum of the following five industrial countries. At the same time, this data is still improving, which will help ensure that China's industry continues to be strong, which is the main source of China's wealth. However, China's service industry may experience a labor shortage, which may be solved by robots and the introduction of labor.

Objectively speaking, I am not very satisfied with China's robot industry, but three facts must be made clear: First, China’s robot industry is not in the first echelon, but its output and export volume are not weak and are growing rapidly--With this import-export ratio alone, China’s share of the robot industry is far more than 1%, Not to mention that China also consumes a large number of self-produced robots, so don’t lie; Second, as the world’s largest country in terms of robot stock and new installations, and the fifth largest country in robot density per capita, China’s consumption accounts for more than half of this multi-billion dollar market. the customers of industrial robots must be industrial powers. To put it bluntly, except for industrial powers such as China, USA,Japan, South Korea, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France,etc. who would want robots? After finally having a huge market like China, do we need to worry that there will be no foreign manufacturers to satisfy it? Third, This is one of the few industrial categories in which Western countries still have a clear advantage. I believe that Japanese and American robotics companies will be very angry at your remarks that stimulate Chinese robotics companies. Do Chinese companies need to fill every corner of the world?

    • @@zsusugioro6506 where is proof cia bot ? WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two years into office, President Donald Trump authorised the Central Intelligence Agency to launch a clandestine campaign on Chinese social media aimed at turning public opinion in China against its government, according to former US officials with direct knowledge of the highly classified operation. Three former officials told Reuters that the CIA created a small team of operatives who used bogus internet identities to spread negative narratives about Xi Jinping’s government while leaking disparaging intelligence to overseas news outlets. The effort, which began in 2019, has not been previously reported.

    • Migrants migrate to wealth. Not to poverty. Migrants from Pakistan and Nigeria, go to higher wages in Europe. Not to lower wages in China. China can't get immigration. No matter how much they want it.
