    • Not just a live speech where its just him; but he also talks about their mom which I know is extremely difficult for all three of them. They don't talk about her often, but when they do I'm always so glad that they had such a wonderful person in their life who made them who they are today.

    • @@WhiteDragoon68 I lost my mom to cancer as well, and I think finding out that they lost their mom is what really made me love them as much as I do. Seeing how close they are as a family and how they've done such great things together gives me hope for myself as I try to figure out what my life without my mom is going to be like.

    • He has a lot of Neil Peart energy in person. He understands his impact on his fans but his struggle with interacting with them (and by extension accepting his success) makes him less than personable. He's a great dude but it takes an insurmountable amount of energy to maintain the version of him that people see on stage because that person is him from a safe space of family.

  • I recently discovered the McElroy brothers and it is bizarre to listen to Griffin speak here. I too am from Appalachia, have two older brothers, and I lost my mother to cancer when I was in my early 20's. I guess it's not that strange to have some demographic similarities with another white dude on the internet, but this feels sort of uncanny to me. Anyway, I obviously relate and I really appreciate Griffin's talk. Love these dudes.

I am so so so glad he acknowledged the fact that it doesn't matter the intention behind whatever they said, but the fact of the matter is that it was hurtful/insulting/offensive/etc. a LOT of content creators today don't realize the impact of what they say outside of their own brain. some of these ppl are like "I said a racial slur but its okay because I didn't mean it to be offensive!" that isn't a valid argument.

  • Yo, what Griffin said about just "being there" for a friend who's lost someone is REAL. If you have a friend who loses someone (I'm coming from the perspective of losing a parent but losing anyone close is devastating), spend time with that friend. Be there for them. They feel incredibly alone, and literally doing anything to spend time with them and support them goes so much farther than you could ever know. If your friend is grieving, it's scary to not know what to do, but if you're worrying about it, you're already doing a good job caring about your friend. Reaching out and supporting them, literally doing anything, is the kind of help that only you can provide and it means so much. Thank you for caring about and supporting your friends. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

  • Really appreciate him talking about the importance of diversity in storytelling and abt how it’s impt despite some ppl thinking it isn’t bc I’ve seen some really negative commentary from fans abt mcelroys “pandering” to ppl and abt “this person is poc/lgbt for NO reason I don’t see how this moves the narrative forward”. That sorta thing can be really discouraging for ppl like me who share the same identities as some of the characters the mcelroys represent so I really appreciate them always standing by/not downplaying the importance of diversity. It makes me feel safe in a way that few other spaces/ people do.

    @user-yl2so8db5t@user-yl2so8db5t5 жыл бұрын
    • hi! Honestly I used to think the same thing as those negative fans. It was genuinely frustrating to see characters being called lgbt while also not really integrating that aspect of their character into the main story. and honestly? I think this comment and some others / other people have changed my mind. that feeling of being safe and encouragement to people just by showing the audience that *these characters are just as relevant and important and don't need to constantly remind you of their orientation / gender* is such a wholesome and profound feeling that even I started to understand a lot more after listening to TAZ. so thanks for posting stuff like this, its really important.

      @whoogh@whoogh5 жыл бұрын
    • @@whoogh the things that bothers people like me isn't that they exist in media as characters. The reason is that some or even many of these characters solely came into existence because they are marketing tools. I cant count the amount of unnecessary moments a character was pushed as gay and nothing much else was said. I've seen commercials that flaunt and products that exploit it. Gay characters aren't bad, but how they are used and the intentions behind why they exist are!

      @Royal_Fortune@Royal_Fortune4 жыл бұрын
    • Cheers, mate. I feel the same. Including diverse characters without making their diversity The Point isn't pandering, it's humanizing and more realistic storytelling.

      @themardbard9096@themardbard90964 жыл бұрын
    • it's so annoying bc characters can be cis, straight, white, and it doesn't have to mean anything as they're seen as the "default". as soon as a character strays from that, they need a purpose. they cant just BE gay or trans or a person of color..

      @jenjen2239@jenjen22394 жыл бұрын
    • What the McElroys do right about diversity is that they have it without lampshading it. There are gay characters, trans characters, characters of different races, etc, and they're just there, doing what they do and being awesome without making a big deal out of it. If you want to normalize diversity, this is how you do it - without unnecessary fanfare.
