Gen 5 is so unappreciated. Game Freak really put a lot of work into these games and people took them for granted. It was a simpler time now look at the Pokémon fan base. Although I’m still excited for Sword and Shield, the community is not great rn and neither is Game Freak. What Pokémon really needs is a game with as much care put into it as Breath of the Wild. I know that’s a lot to ask, but Pokémon is the highest-grossing media franchise in history and has a huge fan base who loves and sticks by it. Series like The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros, and even Mario feel like they have evolved into something greater than we’ve ever seen from those series. That’s not the case with Pokémon Sword and Shield. I realize it would take time, but I’m willing to wait that time and I’m sure many fans are to get the best Pokémon game we’ve ever seen. I have this faith in Pokémon and Game Freak that this can happen. Edit: 9/10/2022 Gen 5 is no longer under-appreciated in fact fans of it seem kind of annoying now. Gen 5 is still my favorite but fans of it need to be more open-minded to the flaws of the games. As for the modern games, Scarlet and Violet seem like a step forward, so I’m glad to see that.

Callouts? You mean the piece of text important characters say when they send out their last pokemon and if that pokemon loses half or more of its health?
Executive Sonda Yes! Those were so cool! And occasionally when it hit the final Pokemon the themes became frantic and wild. Always got my blood pumping especially during the tougher final battles.
Don`t forget that theme that played when the gym leader only had one pokemon left. It made everyhing more exciting.

Black/White 2 literally had everything, and it was like putting an end to the Pokemon 2D game era by giving a shout out to all the previous games character! Also, we all loved that small Meloetta event cutscene. ;)

ORAS... I don't even know how they butchered a remake. Gen 7 had the potential to be as good as the DS titles, sadly it was to handholdy and divided the fans on either liking gameplay (USUM) or story (SM) while hating the other, when they could just made the USUM DLC for SM instead of making it it's own game, then maybe it would've been better then fans thinking USUM were gonna be Sequels like BW2

Word... Black version was my first Pokemon game, and on finishing it my first reaction was, "Holy crap! Why don't people take Pokemon more seriously? This is so much more deep and interesting and hardcore than I ever imagined!"
I really like gen 5 BW because of having pokemon that are all new and nothing from other regions(pre elite 4) forcing you to play with what is around in the region and not play with safe picks(pokemon you already know like having magikarp around or smthg).
ALso has best music to date! I really hope they will NOT remake it...

N's sprite is different between BW and BW2; at the end of BW2's he has a smile instead of the passive expression.
Those cute little details is what sells the franchise for me.
In Black and White 2, he basically spent quite a bit of time reflecting on himself and the world around him after being forsaken by the very organization and “father” he thought he had the support of. He spent that time learning independence and bonding with Pokémon even more. The change to a smile is so much more to me than just a few pixels of difference, and I just love details like that.
N has a smirk in BW, vs the the full on smile he gets in BW2.

BW2 truly were a pinnacle of Pokemon. Not only you can feel the soul in the artstyle, but also in the music. I mean the fact that extra drums play as you walk just makes the BGM so much better. It's only a shame we were to blind to appreciate its genius before it was way too late.

I love how polished the animations were in B&W2. They show the evolution perfectly.
RandomFan gen 3 and gen 5 felt pretty polished to me more so than gen 4.
One thing I love about Cyrus's sprite. When the battle starts he's got his head up and he's doing a smug grin as if to say "you really challenging me" then as soon as the pokeballs appear and the theme kicks in it goes on to this oh its on vibe.
I know this comment is over a year old but I feel the need to comment on this, since I just found this out recently. Cyrus isn't grinning. At all. Take a closer look. His facial features make it look like a smug grin, but at a close glance, he just looks ready to wipe you off the face of the earth.

God we NEED to bring these back. I'll never forget the feeling of seeing a trainer actually be ANIMATED for the first time. It's so unreal.
I feel like B&W and B&W 2 are underated when it comes to the work they did for a style that would only stay for such a short time.. I remember how amazed I was at the sprite work they had for all the gym leaders from the other regions and etc.
IKR, they literally animated sprites for over 500 Pokemon for only 2 years worth of games. Heck even the jump from all these sprites to 3D ones in Gen 6 was impressive. Using the same ones as 2013 though without improving the animations has defs made the games style lose some charm.

Ordo. I whole hardly agreed. Funny story. I skip Gen. 5 for whatever reason because I was so busy with Platinum and Heartgold & Soulsilver so many times. Than I jump into Gen. 6 and after beating it twice, I wasn't impressed and felt disappointed. So I gave Gen. 5 an chance. I sold my X & Y and started playing both Black & White and Black 2 & White 2. After completing the Black & White games, I was shocked on how good these games were and it makes me dislike X & Y even more. No offense to some people that enjoyed X & Y. But I just couldn't go back to it for the life me. To me, Gen. 5 is where GF marks it peak because they had put alot of effort into it. X & Y has none of it and without the Z Version, it remains as my least favorite Pokemon game. Now I don't know how well the other gens after the 6th generation does. But until than, I'm waiting for something to top rank Heartgold & Soulsilver and the Black & White games at this point.

@@kasei4023 I love the characters for BW1 times more than in BW2 but as a game, BW2 greatly improves all the shortcoming of BW while keeping what makes BW is very good. The only degradation is the story with how they involve Player to the game scenario, the Ghetsis fight gets nerved in the way it is presented. I kinda want Ghetsis to escape with the fused Kyurem once before we finally beat him over their main base or something.

Animated sprites were one of the best parts about the games, giving life to important characters. Maybe having it for every trainer was a little overkill, but considering in BW2 they had all the gym leaders champions etc from gen 1-4 it's understandable. Honestly sprites were better than 3d and there was so much more character to their animations when they had them. Just with BW had the sprites as well as BW2.

cute pie I still find BW1 incomplete, unfinished and quite disappointing in comparison to Platinum or HGSS. B2W2 on the other hand, GameFreak or more specific the developer team for this game did an incredible job and finished and improved it so well what Masuda and the original team left. So I still bash BW1, but this is also the case for Ruby&Sapphire and Diamond&Pearl, and this even though I’m a Gen 3 and 4 fanboy. Masuda is only good at making the foundation... the best Pokémon games where all made by other directors like Emerald, Platinum, HGSS and B2W2. And all of them were first made by Masuda as a director.

They’re like legends you’ll never get to meet in the second games, and it would make going all the way back to the first town from the first game feel more special.
