Black-crowned night heron eats an eel-like salamander "an amphiuma salamander" at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. The night heron persists for nearly an hour uncoiling and separating this salamander from the debris it is wrapped around, eventually swallowing the lifeless salamander whole. This amphiuma is likely about 2 feet long, having four tiny nearly useless (front and hind) legs unlike siren salamanders that have two forelimbs. Normally feeding between evening and early morning, this opportunistic night heron finds this meal "fit for a king" in the middle of the afternoon.

Nature's wonders never cease to amaze! 🌿 The Black-Crowned Night Heron showcasing its incredible hunting skills as it skillfully captures and devours an eel-like salamander is truly a sight to behold. Mother Nature's intricate dance of predator and prey unfolds in this mesmerizing video, reminding us of the delicate balance within our ecosystems. Nature is indeed full of surprises and this footage captures one of its captivating moments. 🦢🐍
Thank you for watching, enjoying, and commenting on the footage I was fortunate to get of a night heron's determined hunt for food. Night herons are typically so elusive - this was a moment I'll never forget!
That will eat a baby bunny if it's available they are tremendous hunters
Amazing footage! That looks like a large (a fully grown one? salamander/eel/fish the bird caught! The salamander was struggling, but the hungry Heron managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately wriggling going inside too! I wonder, does the large sea creature stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.
Thank you so much! It’s actually an amphiuma salamander, I’m guessing it was about 2 feet long, one of the smaller varieties. I think by the time the night heron swallowed it the salamander had passed…the whole process took nearly an hour. I don’t think there’s any chance of something once consumed escaping, or at least I havn’t seen it yet! Thanks for your interest!
😂

Didn't look like an easy meal. You sure find them, good job.
Thanks Frank! The heron definitely had to work for this meal - it took almost an hour of wrangling!

Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Cool video, but most people do not read or understand the description. They still think it was an eel 🙂
Thank you - I'm so glad you liked it! Yes, I noticed that many people still think it's an eel. I researched before posting to make sure I knew what it was. I'm so glad you read the description - thank you for taking the time!

He worked hard for that meal. Lol
No doubt about that! 😁
Did it wash, cleaned the salamander before eating it? So hygienic.
😂
"Ну вот, поели, теперь можно и поспать." (с)
Yes, after that effort night heron deserves a good sleep!
A big meal worth catching.
Yes, and patiently waiting for the right moment to swallow!
Night herons have huge, widely separated eyes which give them superior vision over a variety of natural light levels. They also have a flexible neck that can extend and widen significantly when catching prey. They will take their time making sure prey is incapacitated before swallowing whole. Birds have higher metabolic rates than humans which means they can digest faster. Herons have a flexible esophagus and a loose and stretchable stomach. They have strong digestive acids that dissolve bones that make their feces white and limey with dissolved calcium. They have a pancreas and liver that releases bile, insulin, and glucagon to aid in breaking down food and providing necessary sugars for energy.

Great job...

Good question - nice thought! The amphiuma at least provided a healthy meal for the night heron...one that would keep him full for awhile!
Wow.

Beautiful birds eating fish 🐠 thanks you 👍👍👍
Thank you for watching! Yes, they are beautiful birds!
what fish?
@@brazilpaesyou are correct - there was no fish. The night heron was eating an amphiuma (type of salamander). I was acknowledging that the night heron is a beautiful bird.

Thank you so much for watching and enjoying my video!
Oh My God!
Ooooh, that looks like the heron caught a siren...
Actually, the night heron caught an amphiuma (a salamander species)
@MichelleSiefkenPhotography Actually, it's specifically a Black-crowned Night Heron, and since this footage was captured in Florida, the prey item has a high chance of being a siren....which is an aquatic salamander (Sirenidae). As the bird is dragging the amphibian through the water and then flipping it, hard to see presence or absence of appendages behind the gills. That's what I'm looking for and cannot see during all the action.

I can't believe the bird ate the whole thing.
I was pretty amazed too and waited around a little while afterwards to see if he/she could keep it all down! 😂🤣

They are nasty, but incredible hunters at the same time.
I would add that they have such an innocent look, until they're on the hunt for food! Even their eyes look redder than normal when they are after prey.

The heron should have tried electric eel, would have had an electrifying experience. 😅
😂
People don't realize what these birds will eat especially Great blue Herons they will down a baby bunny in a heartbeat if it moves eat it
So true! I have seen great blue herons tackle a lot! However, on rare occasions I have seen them release their prey if it was too big to swallow. This night heron feasting on something so large was a first for me. I assumed it would be managed, but you never know until there’s nothing sticking out of the beak!
Wow

Lol, those eels are so slimy that the night Herron had to take the taste out of its mouth using water grass n all after the big gulp?
😂Possibly!
Vidio yang bagus
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is not salamander, it doesn’t have four legs. it is an eel living in rivers or lakes areas.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. This is an "amphiuma" an aquatic salamander, eel-like in appearance so legs are difficult to find but they're there if you look closely.
woow
It was amazing to watch!
