BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON EATS EEL-LIKE SALAMANDER

2023 ж. 22 Шіл.
3 869 554 Рет қаралды

Black-crowned night heron eats an eel-like salamander "an amphiuma salamander" at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. The night heron persists for nearly an hour uncoiling and separating this salamander from the debris it is wrapped around, eventually swallowing the lifeless salamander whole. This amphiuma is likely about 2 feet long, having four tiny nearly useless (front and hind) legs unlike siren salamanders that have two forelimbs. Normally feeding between evening and early morning, this opportunistic night heron finds this meal "fit for a king" in the middle of the afternoon.

  • Amazing footage! That looks like a large (a fully grown one? salamander/eel/fish the bird caught! The salamander was struggling, but the hungry Heron managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately wriggling going inside too! I wonder, does the large sea creature stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.

    • Thank you so much! It’s actually an amphiuma salamander, I’m guessing it was about 2 feet long, one of the smaller varieties. I think by the time the night heron swallowed it the salamander had passed…the whole process took nearly an hour. I don’t think there’s any chance of something once consumed escaping, or at least I havn’t seen it yet! Thanks for your interest!

    • Night herons have huge, widely separated eyes which give them superior vision over a variety of natural light levels. They also have a flexible neck that can extend and widen significantly when catching prey. They will take their time making sure prey is incapacitated before swallowing whole. Birds have higher metabolic rates than humans which means they can digest faster. Herons have a flexible esophagus and a loose and stretchable stomach. They have strong digestive acids that dissolve bones that make their feces white and limey with dissolved calcium. They have a pancreas and liver that releases bile, insulin, and glucagon to aid in breaking down food and providing necessary sugars for energy.

    • @MichelleSiefkenPhotography Actually, it's specifically a Black-crowned Night Heron, and since this footage was captured in Florida, the prey item has a high chance of being a siren....which is an aquatic salamander (Sirenidae). As the bird is dragging the amphibian through the water and then flipping it, hard to see presence or absence of appendages behind the gills. That's what I'm looking for and cannot see during all the action.

  • This is not salamander, it doesn’t have four legs. it is an eel living in rivers or lakes areas.

    • Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. This is an "amphiuma" an aquatic salamander, eel-like in appearance so legs are difficult to find but they're there if you look closely.
