CRUISE NEWS - COUPLE BLAMES NCL CRUISE LINE FOR LEAVING THEM BEHIND
CRUISE NEWS - COUPLE BLAMES NCL CRUISE LINE FOR LEAVING THEM BEHIND.
Couple who have been on over 30 cruises still blames NCL Cruise Line for leaving them behind when their excursion was late getting back to the ship. They claim the cruise line did not even try to reach them until late the following day about getting back on the ship. They also say the ship was late leaving port 3 stops in a row but would not wait for passengers when they were running late. So whos at fault, the couple or NCL?

This couple needs to accept that it was their responsibility that they missed the ship. Period!!!!
Exactly right! Accepting personal responsibility is becoming a thing of the past, regrettably. My message to these two old cruisers would be "I'm an old Fart too, but at least I'm always on time"! (Thanks to my watch and my Metamucil). Carry on young people!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣@@MrJimmy-ox7fq
Exactly!
Bottom line. They didn't learn much during their 30 years of cruising.
But they may have learned about something else while cruiding
They are in their 80’s. So what if they don’t use NCL for the next cruise.
@@willyyoung6881 Maybe granny Mable and Pops studied that Jane Clover while cruising. It will make you lose track of time. 😂
Well said. Wa Wa Wa
30 cruises, not 30 years of cruising.
If they've taken 30 cruises, then it's their own darn fault if they book a private excursion and they miss the ship. TOUGH!!!
Additionally there’s lots of private excursions that guarantee return on time if they get you to the next port.
Totally the couple’s fault. Without a doubt. they should be thankful that they were able to catch up to the cruise ship the next day
They knew the rules. I have no sympathy for those who feel that they are so important that the cruise line is going to hold departure just for them
Just because you’re Tanzanite level cruiser and you’ve taken 101 cruises, doesn’t mean you can’t make a mistake. Don’t act entitled and blame the ship for your errors. Get your Tanzanite level butt back 30-60 min before all-aboard.
Yes,👍 because we, peasants don’t wish to wait for them.
"Tanzanite Level" 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
Some cruise line really needs to add a Tanzanite locality level.
This couple, who have been on 30 cruises, should have known better . On my 15th cruise, I was in a cab in Mexico that had an accident, and the police wanted me to stay. I explained that we had an all aboard in 30 min and they had all my information. They did not care if l missed my ship. Finally, I realized I needed to slip the police and my cab driver extra to let me leave. I jumped in another cab and ended up a pier runner. But l was there for the all aboard. I learned my lesson and only go on the ship shuttles, pay for an excursion or walk.
They were late period. That’s why you should not to take a private tour your fault
💯
Typical, blame someone else when you're to blame!
No need to complain. They were late, the ship has to keep its schedule.... Late? >Left behind. Their own fault. Every cruiser knows the procedure. I do not feel sorry
At their ages and supposed experience of cruising, they were willing to take the chance to be late for the ship and assume it would wait for them. I’m astounded !!!
Yep agree with every word Don. Not NCLs fault at all and if they are experienced cruisers they should know that.
These people should know better. Another example of people not taking responsibility.
If that couple is "experience" they should know better. NCL shouldn't be blamed for it.
Another lesson learned. No one to blame but yourself. Hope people listen and plan accordingly. ⚓️
As an 80 year old adult, and experienced at cruising, they should KNOW that the cruise will not wait for them! My spouse and I have 20+ under our belt. We always book our own excursions but we are smart enough to be sure we are back on time. We have never had an issue, ever. Take responsibility for yourself or stop cruising...end of story. The cruiseline had nothing to apologize for.
Always plan to be 30 minutes to a hour back on the ship before it departs.
We aim for 2 hours. Because unexpected things happen. It allows plenty of time to get back to the ship
I have never cruised, I would probably be there 2 hours in advance, to be sure!
I aim for an hour before departure. But usually it’s a good two hours…fives relax time in port. Definitely the cruisers fault.
Exactly. My own choice is at least 2 hours to be back on board.
I wonder if they think the airline should wait for them if they miss their boarding time.
They were late. It’s not the cruise lines fault.
Late is late. People always want to blame someone else
NCL = "Never Come Late." - Doug Parker, from Cruise News
NCL == never cruise again. Half of his negative stories are about the company screwing passengers. (Not this time is was Grandpa’s fault… but other stories.)
Of course all the other passengers who were able to follow the correct time were all EXTREMELY early to not miss the departure. No one wants to accept responsibility for their own stupidity.
Entitlement! Must be a key word in their vocabulary. As far as I am concerned the they are SOL!
"I've been on over 30 cruises. Everyone else should wait for me."
No, we have even been to more than 65 cruises. No cruise ship will ever wait for us of we are late. Point.
We always book cruise company excursions. One time of missing ship negates any money you're saving by a long shot!
I'm betting they never gotten in touch with the NCL Port Agent.
So they selfishly think that the whole ship and passengers should be inconvenienced because the went off script for an excursion....what could go wrong
Totally agree Don. As experienced cruisers, they should know better and should know they have no room to complain. Suck it up butter cups.
Private tour operators worry me. When we were younger, we never worried about the risks, but now that we're older, we stay with cruiseline sanctioned tours for our own peace of mind.
They should have known better. You can’t make an excuse about their age or what items they left behind. If they are unable to follow the rules, they shouldn’t do a vacation like this. I think they were treated above and beyond by the cruise ship.
NCLs explanation is spot on. The couple is entitled and need to step up humbled, and embarrassed by their situation. Shane on them.
they were to be on ship by 5:30 pm. they returned at 6:30 pm! and they didn't even call until after the all aboard time! They are out of their ever loving minds. The port is run but the harbor master. Not by the tourists. They left the ship without their medications, batteries, hearing aides , etc.. and want to make it everyone else's fault. Warning to all on shore- be back on time, no matter what.
Did they call the port telling them they were late? They should know better since they were so called experienced cruisers.
Even IF they did call the Port that doesn’t matter. Get your butt back on time 🤦🏽♀️
We were traveling on the Oceania Vista in January. Our SHIP shore excursion was 3 hours late getting back to port in Santo Tomas in Guatemala. The ship waited!.
The couple needs to book their tour with a company that guarantees getting back on time or gets you to the next stop
There's no guarantee you will make it back in time, Anything can happen and that's why people should plan on getting back early. I would never book any private excursion.
@@pamelapope859Sometimes it’s worth the risk to get a private excursion not from the cruise line. But I’d only do it if they guarantee to get you back on time and the scheduled return time is so early that there is a lot of buffer (maybe 2 hrs). Same if I went out on my own, keep a lot of buffer time at the end.
Sounds like NCL did nothing wrong. All aboard was 5:30 and they got there at 6:10 or later.
They were late and the ship left. Too bad so sad! As veteran sailers they knew better.
I book private excursions all the time but I also know that if I don’t make it back in time it is on me. Knowing that I only book private excursions which are scheduled to end at least a couple of hours before the all on board time. I also have travel insurance to cover the cost of getting to the next port. For those that think taking an excursion through the cruise line means they won’t leave you, you are mistaken. They may wait longer for you if they can but by the terms of your agreement with them they can leave you and have left people on ship excursions before. They are then responsible for getting you to the next port of call.
That is why I always book thru the cruise line. Yes, I'm a 🐔
They went on shore with no hearing aids or eyeglasses?
No hearing aid batteries! No need for reading glasses on most tours, or only use prescription sunglasses on a tour. My concern is more of how do I make sure that those are with my passport and meds when they have to leave even in a ship tours -- yes that happens.
We take extra meds, battery chargers and a picture of our important documents on our cell phone. We pay a little extra, but we always book with the cruise.
The fault is definitely with the couple. How many times does it have to be said. You must be back on time.
Arranging your own shore excursion is like playing with fire.
Sucks when the rules are actually applied. Grandpa probably thought his age would get some grace.
NCL should ask them to repay the money spent waiting and for the limo ride back. That would shut them up.
Almost sure that the couple thought “the ship docked late, so we should have the time we were short-changed in our favor to allow us to stay in port longer”. Just my opinion, of course.
That is the risk you take without being on a ship excursion sometimes things happen.
Would the couple have been better off reaching out to the port agent for the cruise line to advise that they were late in returning and that way their required medication etc (along with passports) could be dock side if they didn’t make it? A trip from a cruising friend is to take a screenshot of the listed port agent (hopefully printed in the daily planner) prior to exiting the ship for the day
The entitlement of that couple is ridiculous. Nobody owes them a dang thing. NCL went above and beyond although they did not have to. Hopefully the couple learned everything doesn’t revolve around them. They should be apologizing to NCL and other guests.
That confirms what we learned when we went through the Panama canal. We were there on time, but we couldn't proceed until the Harbour master gave the go ahead. We waited hours in the heat. When our turn came, we got in the lane and other ships came behind us. Very interesting. Didn't realize even in port the Harbour masters tell when to occupy the space. But it makes sense. BTW, we took a cruise line sponsored excursion and we were so afraid of returning late. We were over an hour late, but the ship waited, and others who were on the same excursion but different buses, returned even later. No one was left. If we will take a private excursion, we make sure we're within sight of the ship and we come back at least two hours before all aboard.
Amazing!!!! How do people not take responsibility for their actions?!?🤦
The cruise lines have more expensive tours but look at the extra as an insurance policy that guarantees your ship will be there when you return. Now is it too expensive?
That couple just made fools of themselves on multiple levels. They called their relative 15 minutes before the ship was to depart? Please.
I have listened to enough cruise videos now I have received the message. So what if booking your excursion through the cruise line costs a bit more? Think of it as trip insurance. I would have a heart attack if boarding time came and went and I was still on dry land! I have no earthly idea why anyone would risk ruining their entire vacation to score a “cheap” shore excursion. 🤦🏼
I either tour on my own or via private excursion most of the time. If I get back late and the ship is gone… just part of the adventure I guess.
Booking an excursion through the ship guarantees they will either wait for you or get you to the next port. They have left passengers in the past who were on ship excursions which ran late. If authorities won’t allow them to wait, the cost to wait would be well in excess of the cost to house and transport the late passengers to the next port or waiting would endanger the ability to make the next port, they will leave you. I plan my private excursions to give me plenty of leeway for things to go wrong and I have travel insurance which will cover the cost of getting me to the next port.
I think someone must have a lot of money or something! I am planning my first cruise which might be my only cruise since vacations are an expensive luxury. I want things to go well. If my floating hotel left me standing on the dock with no tooth brush crying into the wind, I would be devastated. Therefore, I am grateful for the cruise reviewers who visit and revisit this subject. The bottom line is, as I understand it, if you want to guarantee this is not a problem on your cruise, book your excursions through the cruise line!
The entitlement of people kills me each and every time. Idc of the ship DID get there late. If folk could just call the ship and tell them to wait for them then there would be no rules for late comers. BE ON THE SHIP WHEN THEY SAY.... PERIOD!
Pay your money and take your chances.
Them being left is completely on the couple NOT cruise line.
Some people are incapable of taking responsibility for their own mistakes or actions.
Again.. do NOT try to save $$ by booking private tours. The added expense of flights and hotels to get back to the ship far outweigh what you might save. Now it may have been that the shore excursions they wanted was full so they went to an outside provider. It's not worth what you "paid" (cash or frustration!) to see. BOOK ONLY WITH CRUISE LINES ! (One exception... Hop on Hop off busses)
I’m going to respectfully disagree. There are often good reasons for booking a private tour. But if you book independently, accept the risk and possible consequences.
That is why we always do the cruise line excursions, to save $20.00, they spent probably another $1000.
It is definitely the couples responsibility to ensure that they are back to the ship on time. I have cruised over twenty five times and I would never take a chance on a private tour. I have always booked tours from the ship and twice we were late getting back to the ship and both times the ship was there waiting for us. The one time we were two hours late. Had it been a private tour, the ship would have left us behind.
Agree with most of you said until the end with the remarks suggesting their ag was a problem.
Our greatest fear, watching the ship disappear into the sunset whilst standing in a foreign port.
We have talked about this before-get to the ship on time!!!
They should have called the port harbor master number on the cruise Compas. Every experienced cruiser knows "COME BACK EARLY" don't wait till the last possible minute to leave your excursion.
They were at fault not the NCL
On time = no problem!
Yep they missed the ship!
Clearly the couple that have been on 30 cruises and left behind by NCL , needs to stop blaming NCL and blame themselves for missing ship
Well, if they needed the medications and such so badly, they should have taken them with them. They should be grateful NCL did ANYTHING at all. Wow, even the older folks think they are entitled. SMH. And to think I thought it was the newer generation! I always bring 2 days' worth of meds in my purse when I disembark at a port just in case I miss the ship. NCL was very generous. They should be thanking them not complaining.
It is one hundred percent this couple's fault.
One hour before sailing. Period. I’ve been on 30 cruise too. The only time this rule doesn’t apply to me, is on a cruise line sponsored tour.
absolutely not NCL fault on all my cruises I have been back on board at least a hour before departure and have never had a problem. The couple has to take responsibility that they mess up.
I once missed returning to the ship on time in Stockholm. My fault for straggling. I took the train to Arlanda Airport, and booked a flight to the next destination the following morning. Yes I was mad, but mad at myself.
I'm Retired CTC in Travel. That's where the saying "you missed the boat" comes from! Been on over 50+ cruises and never missed.
Great explanation Don, people make assumptions but don't read the contracts!
I guess we are just overly cautious, but we are very careful about this. We book private excursions but with companies that guarantee that you will be back in time or they will get you to the next port and for excursions that are not far from the port. We also specify a return time that is at least 90 minutes earlier than the all aboard time. We are usually back on board long before the ship sponsored groups. Whenever an excursion takes us farther away from the port, or involves water travel, we book through the cruise line. I can't imagine how stressful being left would be so we do our best to make sure it doesn't happen to us.
so they think they are special. and ship should of waited for them. they disgust me
Exactly……this type of people disgust me, hopefully they won’t come back.
Thirty years of cruising and you're still taking private tours? I just got back from a Norwegian cruise & I would never chance taking a private tour. I pay a little more but I need the assurance that excursions sponsored by NCL will handle any problem should we be late in getting back! In other words, you get what you paid for! Regardless of their age, I have no sympathy for them.
Why did this couple leave their glasses and hearing aides on the ship? That doesn't make sense. Travel insurance seems to be the avenue of recource.
If the cruise lines started to wait for people that were late, pretty soon half the ship would be late coming back and they would never get out of port. Human nature. They can't wait for anyone, it won't work.
If you look on the back of a Norwegian key card you will find the ship’s phone number. Might have helped them.
We always get back 1 hour before the ship leaves when during private tours.
I agree withbyou Don, not cruise lines fault
The couple don’t have a leg to stand on, NEXT!
This is exactly why I do ship tours!!
Isn't this the same couple who was left behind before. So, whose fault is it? THEIRS!!
They learned lesson. They should not take a private tour unless in early morning for one or two hours tour.
My wife and I are on our 18th "Someone else drives the boat" ocean cruise (Renaissance, Oceania, and Viking). I noticed early on that the last dock line would be let go a minute or two before the scheduled leaving time. I presumed the port charged like California's vehicle ticket penalty system, which was $15 for $10 of the fine or portion thereof. For example, if you leave at 6:01, the ship is charged for the whole hour or whatever time interval they charge in. My wife and I have done only one noncruise line tour while on the cruise, and that one started and ended with a cruise line-arranged bus trip.
Also on that Guatemala excursion my husband was seriosly injured. We had to leave the ship. Oceania could not have been more helpful.
Back in 2001 my wife and I were on the Norwegian sky and there was a family that went to mendenhall glacier well when they got back to the cruise ship they realized that they had left their passports along with their key cards on the glacier. So they had to fly them back out there to the glacier to pick them up so they can afford the ship again so needless to say we were late leaving
This is why I'm nervous about doing independent tours/excursions.
Book a private tour and take your chances. We were once on a ship provided tour and were late. Guess what, the ship waited.
That is why when I take excursions I book them thru the ship because they get notified by the tour company and wait for you until you make it back to port.
We were once on a Bahamas cruise on NCL out of Miami. We were supposed to leave about 5 pm. Between a crew member being evacuated with a medical emergency & having so many ships in port it took forever to get water to all of them we left at 9 pm. But we didn't expect them to leave every port 4 hours late just because of that.
We were on a private excursion once and we could tell we were not getting back on time. We actually left the excursion and took a cab back. We got back, the other passengers (about 8 of them) did not. We took responsibility and got ourselves back.
Sad to be unable to face the facts of whatever mistakes we make...almost every day if busy moving forward in life.
These people probably have never taken responsibility for their actions all their lives. Older but not wiser.
One way to remedy this is the charge the late passengers the cost of the total extra fees plus a service charge.
I am a senior. I often hear seniors talk about the "younger generation" never taking responsibility for their actions or that the younger generation don't think through their actions (always drives me crazy when I hear this kind of talk) ---this is a clear case of the couple not taking responsibility for their decisions and expecting everyone around them to rescue them. I wonder if they are the same type of passenger that feels entitled to jump the line while on the ship ---at the elevator, at the buffet etc etc. Sounds like they should become landlubbers.
Sucks to be them. The ship left on time. Take responsibility for your mistake.
What a couple of jerks. I normally have sympathy, but this couple gets zero. They arrived 40 minutes past all aboard time and are upset with the ship. WTF?!? Try showing up 40 minutes for a flight and see what happens. I’m dead serious when I say they should be banned from the cruise line for life.
