  • I noticed, that when the handler moved her foot, when learning how to walk, Perdy IMMEDIATELY changed her stance. That was really cool. And when Perdy was in front of the car, she placed herself in front of her handler to stop her. I find guide dogs absolutely fascinating - be they for the blind, deaf, disabled or traumatized... Just the amount of commands these amazing dogs can remember and LOVE to do is amazing. 😍

    • Guide programs as well as other service dog program exist in the USA, guide programs are often free, while service dogs for other matters are not, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t fundraising, or other means. Owner training is possible, but isn’t recommended for guide dogs.

    • She has up close tunnel vision so she can see a bit. But I worked in a building with a workshop for blind adults. It was 2 blocks from the WPA school for the Blind. I learned that in familiar surroundings blind people seem sighted. Also grew up in a small town with the WPA School for the Deaf so learned a bit of sign but many read lips. As I've grown older and my hearing and vision are slowly fading I am grateful for learning g a bit the about these disabilities. At 94 My mother began losing her vision. Her hearing had long been compromised. But visiting her one would never know except you gotta yell.

  • I am admittedly a bit ignorant of guide dogs. But, I watch a content creator, Molly Burke and watched her go through pairing with a guide dog. She went to a center and stayed for a week or so and worked with 3 different dogs to try to find the right match for her. It seemed like an amazing way making sure you get a dog right for us. Things like their gait, etc can really make all the difference to their human.

    @Sassyglbeauty@Sassyglbeauty Жыл бұрын
    • In the states, most Guide dog programs pre-match you before you arrive for training. They have already assessed your travel skills, how fast you walk, your gate etc. prior to training.

    • If it's a service animal a building can't deny them as long as you have the correct papers. If they do its discriminating against someone with a disability. I know this as I was a landlord for a while.

  • At one time, when guide dogs were matched with their human partner, they did their training at special facilities. Seeing this now, it seems easier for the pair to get used to their surroundings in everyday surroundings over facilities where things would be different when the pair left. Bravo.

    • Nancy, this was a covid measure. In order to get the most guiding pairs trained, a class is still the best way to do that, followed by a week or so home training. The campus at guide dogs Victoria is also undergoing a huge rebuild as well so it’s a bit of a thing right now. I believe that GDV now runs classes at serviced apartments. There are positives and negatives to both. Also, you have a very very special name. My first guide dog, who retired 13 months ago and left us in September last year was called Nancy. She was a beautiful, soft, cuddly golden lab who turned my world upside down in the best way possible. I think all Nancys are very special.

  • I'm thinking it might not have been correct for her to start out using the playful, high-pitched loud voice when giving guide requests to the dog. Because, in day-to-day life, the dog should be responsive when and where she may need to be quiet or discrete with a calm low-key voice; in church, an office, a sleeping household, etc. The dog will be a natural part of her personal entity that does not require attention or interaction with anyone other than her.

    @reneemarielong6798@reneemarielong6798 Жыл бұрын
    • The high pitch excited voice is part of training. It’s called positive praise reinforcement training and it’s becoming very popular with Guide programs. She won’t always talk to her dog like that.

      @heather2697@heather2697 Жыл бұрын
    • @@heather2697 I'm thinking it should NOT be part of training. Positive praise reinforcement can easily be given at a lower tone and volume of voice, or even inaudibly with a nod, smile and touch. Just my opinion.
