The story of the sled dog, Togo, who led the 1925 serum run, but was considered by most to be too small and weak to lead such an intense race.
© 2019
For everyone who doesn't know and is calling this a Balto rip-off or remake. Togo was the other famous dog from that mission. Togo actually led for the longest stretch of the run. Balto if i recall did the last stretch and apparently (i think) led in near white out conditions. Balto got more fame/recognition since his story was more compelling at the time even though a lot of people consider Togo to be the superior sled dog.
Thought the same thing, but am looking forward to it. Still, it's not really an "untold story."
This, story wise, is just a Balto Rip Off.
@@jeremiahnations8808 Balto was a cartoon made for kids, this is the story about the bond between a man and his dog. You might consider it to be a Balto rip off, but a lot of us are happy that Togo is finally get the fame he deserves. Considering it's made for Disney plus, it honestly looks WAY better than the remake of Lady & the Tramp.
@@jeremiahnations8808 This is based on the same event as Balto. It's not a rip off.
So, they are not the same dog??
"You know I'm somewhat of a dog trainer myself...."
"Spider-Man" reference alert!!
Holy shit
lmao yes
Good reference 👍
The cunning warrior neither attacks body or mind
For those who confuse Balto and this new movie: Balto is still Balto and Togo is still Togo. During the outbreak of diphtheria in the remote town of Nome, Alaska, medicine needed to be transported by train from Anchorage to Nenana. From Nenana, the serum needed to be transported across the vast wilderness of Alaska to Nome by dogsled. The reason that they used dogs was that the other options (sea and air) were unable to function during the middle of winter. The run was split up into different relays, where the serum would constantly be moved along, day and night until it got to Nome. There were a total of 20 mushers I belive, who participated in the relay. Most notable was Leonhard Seppala, who this movie is based upon, with his lead dog(s) Togo (and one more whose name escapes me at this time, sorry). They travelled not only the furthest, by far of anyone, but also along the most dangerous route (including over the Norton Sound, which we could see some of in the trailer). Where Bolto enters is at the second to last stage, where Gunnar Kaasen is waiting with his lead dog(s) Balto (and Fox, but that is a story for another time). Kaasen somehow ended up skipping the last stage and went straight to Nome himself (this part of the story is still heated to this day). At the time of the Serum Run, Seppala was the owner of both Togo and Balto (along with multiple others of course). Therefore, there is a chance that we'll see Balto in this movie as well. Considering the fact that Seppala (Defoe) was the owner of Balto at the time of the Serum Run. Balto was, however, never a prime candidate to be a part of Seppala's master class of a team. Seppala was the premier dog musher in Alaska at the time as well. Fun fact: Seppala trained dogs for polar explorer Roald Amundsen and they are both Norwegians. After the Serum Run, Togo received a gold medal from Amundsen in Central Park, New York. When Togo died in 1929, more than 20 000 people gathered in Madison Square Garden to commemorate him and his legacy. "The Cruelest Miles: The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic" is a book which attempts to recapture the events of the Serum Run to Nome in 1925. I've not personally read it, but I've heard good things and the review are good. If you happen to be able to read Norwegian, then there is another book which is called "Sepp: En biografi om Leonhard Seppala" (a biography of Leonhard Seppala). Leonhard Seppala is the man William Dafoe is going to depict in this movie. Would recommend searching for information about the man in question, make for very interesting reading and a good story. Hope that helps somewhat for those that were confused by the entire premise. Also, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is held each year to commemorate the events of the Serum Run. However, they start just north of Anchorage instead of in Nenana. Extra fun fact: if you're looking at an old photo of a sled dog and are wondering if it's Togo or not, you can tell by the fact that Togo was missing the tip of his right ear. Extra extra fun fact: Here is an interview made with Seppala while he was visiting Norway in 1950: www.nb.no/nbsok/nb/30af23775b432433f9b401976924c807?index=3 He starts talking about Togo at about 3:30. You can also listen to the way he pronounces "Togo", which is different from how a native English speaker would say it. If anyone is super interested and wants a translation, I could do that, just tag my name in a comment asking for it or something.
@Stuxnet HomeGroup Perhaps, but at least I was able to get it off my chest. I just find the entire story so fascinating, you know. Also: I found the name of the dog who ran co-lead with Togo. His name was Fritz, and he was Togo's half-brother. Fritz also lived the longest of Seppala's Serum Run team. He ended up becoming 18 years of age by 1932. Seppala's teams often ran with leaders in single-position. Togo could often be seen with an especially long lead, with Fritz appearing as a swing dog (a pair of dogs who are right behind the lead dog(s) and makes turns more gentle on the sled).
@@PaulStallion Some of this can be found on Wikipedia, yes, some other things are more obscure. If you're interested in learning more about the Serum Run, Togo or Seppala, then I've compiled a small list of some of the sources that I read while researching the event some months ago. I'm sorry that some of the sources are in Norwegian, but that's my primary language and there is a lot of information about Seppala in Norwegian, so there's that. Hunden Togo English sources: Earl J. Aversano. History of the 1925 Nome Serum Run Discovery Channel. Icebound, The Greatest Dog Story Ever Told BBC.com . In 1925, a remote town was saved from lethal disease by dogs History.com. The Sled Dog Relay That Inspired the Iditarod Iditarod edu. Serum run, the Rest of the Story If you're interested in either dog sled racing, want to learn more about it or just want to watch something nice, then I can recommend The Great Alone. It's a documentary about Iditarod champion Lance Mackey and is in my opinion worth a watch.
I appreciate and am very grateful for the time it took to rundown some history behind the events of said trailer. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you!
@@J4CKTR1PP3R You're most welcome. I'm just doing my part in clearing up the narrative for the sizeable amount people who, understandably, related this movie to Balto (1995). At the same time giving some context to a narrative which might, for some, be unfamiliar. If you have any other questions related to Seppala, The Serum Run, Togo, Balto, Fritz, Iditarod, Huskies or other things related to it, then I'll try my best to answer them. I might not get back to you immediately, because I'm going to bed soon, so yeah. Something which is quite funny, to me at least, is that I'm now involved in several comment threads such as this across multiple versions of the same trailer.
@@ingehaugland3962 😊🤗😉 Thank you Inge...

Harrison Ford: I'm going to make a movie about a CGI dog in the wilderness! Willem Dafoe: CGI Dog?!?! Pffft, Hold my beer...
You said it
" he'll never make that distance" * makes distance
I named one of my Siberian Husky after Togo! So happy to see that Togo, as well as Seppala and his other sled dogs are finally going to be recognized for covering the longest and most hazardous leg of this race! Love this breed! They’re truly amazing!
i love all the wolf-like breeds - beautiful animals
Good to see Balto and Kaasen share the spotlight.
@@paulabarquez1252 only Togo hero of serum run not Balto
@@abhishekshukla9542 my point was it's good that Togo's story is finally being told around the world.
@@paulabarquez1252 yeh!, i am also happy to see this,Togo finally recognize as Hero of serum run. I also want to honoured statue of Togo in America. Please update me of any statue found in America!!
I'm a grown man in my early 30's and I had a knot in my throat just from the trailer. I don't know the true story, but if Togo dies I don't think I can handle it. Something about movies like this, with animal heroes, gets me everytime.
I see Willem Dafoe I click
Louizzza he makes interesting characters all The time, I always Check to see what he did too! That Lighthouse movie looks interesting and so does this, hes been great in so many roles.

YAY TOGO IS FINALLY GETTING HIS MOVIE!
Waiting for William to yell “Let Neptune strike ye dead!” “Ye don’t like me Lobster?”
This is the story of the greatest dog sled team in history, at the height of their powers, pushed to the absolute limit of what they were capable of because many lives were at stake. If they had not been so skilled and determined, they and the town of Nome would have perished. There was probably really was no one else in the world who could have done this. They were truly the best, and they just barely succeeded by struggling with everything they had in them to the limit of what is possible for a dog sled team. It's amazing and wonderful. They are genuine heroes. The leadership shown by Seppala and Togo is literally awesome. The story of Togo and Seppala is one of history's greatest survival stories against extreme wilderness weather conditions. I remember reading about it and imagining it visually like a movie. I'm glad they're making this and Dafoe is the star. If they are able to translate the actual events to the screen, and capture the drama and danger and incredible skill of Seppala, Togo, and their team, then this movie can be a masterpiece. I hope Disney doesn't tone it down for the kids, but keeps the danger and daunting odds intact. It's alright to frighten the kids a little with the desperateness of the situation, they'll get their happy ending. I want to root for Togo when the chips are down and success seems less likely than death. I want some beautifully directed tense bleak severity keeping me on the edge of my seat during the struggle. They were face to face with death. Don't be afraid to have scenes of intensity like _The Worst Journey in the World._ I am cautiously optimistic. The trailer looks like it could be from a movie that does the story justice and I'm sure Dafoe is capable of giving a great performance Seppala. Good luck, Disney! I would love to watch the results if you succeed! The story has it all, and if the filmmakers do it justice it would deserve to win Best Picture. Even if the adaptation is mediocre it will be a decent movie because the story is so good.
This looks like a great Christmas Holiday watch.
Willem Dafoe plus dogs, I'm already crying!
The movie ends with Balto getting all the credit
Man, tears welling up already and it's just the trailer!!!!
Interesting that Balto did 50 miles while Tōgō Lead the pack 260 miles with 12 year old who is the héroe now .

Intelligence. Courage. Stamina. And heart. Willem Dafoe in a nutshell!!!
Awww Togo!
As a dog lover I can't even wait for this!
The real hero behind the story that balto is based in. Balto only ran the end, the least distance. Togo did the longest and hardest ride..im happy to see this
That's exactly what we've been waiting for with my daughters!
Ima 30 y.o. fully grown up boy and i was...i was crying at the end...
Dafoe, Dogs - I'm in.
Aww the puppy is so cute🥰
Man I am looking forward to this.
The yearly Iditarod race is a essentially a tribue to the Serum run to Nome. 1,000 miles and Balto ran the last 100 miles and got most of the credit because his team delivered the medicine in front of the media. There were several other teams that did 100 mile stretches, Togo's team had to run over 300 miles because a storm front was piling up too much snow in the south from the east. He went west over the ice and kept thd Serum run alive. Togo was also 12 and Balto was around 5. Thats like a 75 year old running three time the distance as a 35 year old.
Give this man Oscar already!!!
FINALLY A GREAT MOVIE. CANT WAIT FOR IT.
Dafoe is such a good actor that at this point I would pay to watch him taking a dump.
After such a long time.. such goosebumps
About time Togo get some recognition
Not gonna lie this made me cry *hits replay button*

This is the story I've been waiting for to be told. Balto was one of my favorite movies growing up. And little did I know, it was a true story. So i wikipediad it. Lo and behold, the true hero was actually Togo! And Balto got all the fame, a statue, and even a movie. This guy never got the praise he deserved. Watch this movie guys. Give him his praise. He deserves it.

God, I love this already
"The untold true story " obviously it's been told to someone throughout the years.
Yeah it is a story of baltor the sledge dog every slavic feels proud of them
I believe the reason they say “untold” was because the press ran with Balto’s story, not Togo’s after the serum run.
He was so good in At Eternity's Gates!!!!!!!
This is going to be awesome 😎 and action packed ☺️
I feel so related to this dog🤘😎🏹❤
