How Karl Benz's trainee created Audi / The History of Audi

The history of Audi is varied and filled with key events. Its tradition of cars and engines manufacturing dates back to the 19 century.
Founded on July 16, 1909 in Zwickau, Germany, Audi AG is a world-renowned manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles and is one of the three luxury automakers, besides Mercedes Benz and BMW, that together constitute what is known as the 'German Big 3' - a group of those three car-manufacturers from Germany that also happen to be the largest sellers of luxury cars in the whole world. With 99.55% of its shares under the ownership of the Volkswagen Group of Germany, Audi has been a majorly-owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen clan ever since 1966. Today, from its magnificent headquarters situated in the city of Ingolstadt in Bavaria, Germany, the company carries out its operations in over a 100 countries, a 110, to be precise, across the globe.
The origins of this legendary auto-clan date back to November 14, 1899, the day when its founder, August Horch, established his very first car company, named as A. Horch & Cie. Motorwagen Werke, in the district of Cologne where he built his very first car in 1901. Following a difference of opinion with the company's supervisory board, Horch had to move out of his business venture and move on to establish a new car factory by the name of Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH in 1909. But the same fate followed Horch in this new venture as well, and soon he found himself, yet again, severing ties with a company that he had established himself. Not one to be discouraged so easily, August Horch, in 1909 itself set up a second 'Horch' car factory in Zwickau, which he later renamed as 'Audi' due to some trademark infringement issues with his former business allies. Early in the year after that, the world got to witness the launch of the first Audi car, the Type B, after which the automaker never had to look back.

  • Back in 1998 I drove a Mercedes S class for the first time. I never drove a car so nice and vowed to myself I was not going to buy another car until I could afford a Mercedes. I owned 3 Mercedes since. In 2000 I drove an Audi Q3 and experienced the same feeling I had when I drove my first Mercedes. I'm an Audi owner now. Great cars.

  • My wife wanted an Audi and we started with an A6. She unfortunately contracted brain cancer and as her needs grew, I changed to Q7 and when she couldn't get up into the SUV, I traded it for an A8. She loved being in the car and I have an A8 today. Beautiful cars with great handling, styling and above all a memory.

  • I didn't drive one until 2016 and that year I bought 2 of them on the CPO program and still love them today. They provide an amazing feel of the road while delivering smooth and significant power in a sure-footed manner - all while caressing occupants in quiet, luxurious comfort. Despite that, they seem to be the most understated member of the collection of German luxury car brands.

Mazda has been doing that for many years. I own a 2023 Mazda CX-30 with a high performance 2.5 liter engine, and 6-speed automatic/manual shift transmission.

The drive of Quattro is held reliably and smoothly only by Audi vehicles and is an incredible experience by itself. Very very hard to say if my next car will be other than an Audi😊

  • Amazing details in this great video, thanks for this. I can recall in the 1950s seeing an Auto Union badged car with the four rings on a drive and even then was quite fascinated. I have been a Ford and BMW driver for many years but the new Audi range looks so very good and many are seen on UK roads now in various forms. If I need another car at any time, I just may give the Audi a look in, the fact that they do not seem to corrode like some other makes is a great asset especially in the UK, and also if you tend to keep cars for a long time, as I do. Well done, very interesting video.

  • I’ve driven plenty of Porsches, many Mercedes, a bunch of beemers, but until we test drove my wife’s used 2018 q5 prestige… I’d had only driven an old Audi that reminded me of a convertible 1994 Mercedes e-320…. Porches have their quirks and sometimes fall on their face, Mercedes have always been just like Rock hard Cadillacs, and bmw’s growlers that spin their back wheels.

  • Since 2022 with the introduction of RS4 Competition, Audi is for the first time the sportiest German brand (except of course 2-seaters from its sister Porsche). True, already in 2021 the RS3 became the sportiest compact anywhere but that’s just a tuned VW Golf, not a real Audi (i.e. longitudinal engine). So while the company is discontinuing motorsports, at the same time I believe it has today become the world’s top sports car brand, at least among the ones with more than 2 seats. It helps that Mercedes and BMW have seemingly decided to not take part in this segment anymore with 4 cylinder-PHEVs replacing 6 cylinders, and minivan-like steering, respectively.

  • What do I think about Audi cars?! I love their excellence. My dad bought an Audi 80 in Kaduna, Nigeria when I was in elementary school. I fell in love with it. Started driving it from 1989 when I was about 16 years old. He let me drive and got me a learner's permit as I was not old enough to have a driver's license. I don't have an Audi myself today but I hope to buy one. I even saw one today around Jabi Lake in Abuja and the 4 rings instantly caught my attention. I loved the speed and stability of the Audi 80 when I used to drive my dad's and wished he gave it to me in 1992 but he sold it. For whatever reason I still want an Audi among my collections.

    • As if anybody would need a permit in Nigeria! Do they even have paved streets for cars there??? Normally they ride Camels and Donkeys there, yet a stolen car from Europe might slip through once in a while, while some Heroin and Crack dealers from Nigeria might get lucky too!

  • I work for a big car rental company and have the privilege to drive many premium cars on a daily basis up and down the country in the UK; here are my thoughts. Of all the various brands the 3 german premiums would be my favourite: audi, bmw, mercedes. Mercedes seem to have the most common faults, engine issues, headlight issues ect and feel very budget inside compared to the other 2 brands (material wise). BMW are very nice inside and out providing they are top spec'd otherwise they are filth, manuals are horrible to drive but lovely engines. Audi are my favourite as they are very nice inside and out with a better interior layout compared to BMW with better tech, flat bottom steering wheel best. This is of course providing you get them top spec'd with all optional extras but the quality makes it worth the price tag compared to other 2 german premiums. Great to drive, great engines, great lineup, reliable mostly aslong as you maintain well.

    • Where do you get that idea from, yes Audi, when it was still trading as DKW- Auto Union in the 60s' was owned for a short time by Daimler Benz, DB gave DKW-Auto Union a 4 stroke engine, previously DKW-Auto Union had the 3=6 with 3 cylinder 2-stroke engines. At that time VW was also changing over from 4 cylinder horizontally opposed aircooled engines (Boxer) over to 4 cylinder in-line water cooled engines (the advent of Golf, Polo & Passat). Porsche located in Zuffenhausen in is a neighbor of Daimler Benz in Sindelfingen, there was a time when Porsche was assembling DB cars in the early 1990's, Porsche was experiencing hard times in the early 1990's.

Even with the class action case involving 2012 cars which came out costly to they, they continue selling cars with that engine. The defect comes apparent right after the warranty expires (by the way, a very short warranty time indeed). The car begins consuming too much oil and next thing is an engine overhaul costing around 6Ks. The rest of the car is very nice, but stay away from any 2-Liter turbo engine from the VW family, including Audi.

  • Audi was never created. This is simply a volkswagen at a price. Audi came from DKW (Deutsche Kraft Werke) and was a very good car with a free wheeling gearbox like Saab had in those days. The iconic 4 stars is all that's left from DKW. So, in the beginning Audi produced a volkswagen which same care with a volkswagen batch was cheaper (passat) Story here is not correct.

    • VW Group acquired Audi in the early 1970s because VW had zero expertise in building liquid-cooled engines at the time (for obvious reasons). With the exception of the VR5/VR6 and 2.5L five cylinder, the majority of VW/Audi engines were designed by Audi.

    • @dantes inferno purgatory I am not sure this is right. Audi came about as a new or better VW. Like Lexus is for Toyota. Well before the 1970's VW had the golf passat etc. Audi was bust since early 60's I think. Still think my dkw cabriolet with the 4 rings 😃 was great.

    • I had a 2014 Volkswagen TDi that was bought back in the 2016 diesel-gate recall. I loved driving it, but the jump up to the 2 Audi's I bought to replace it with resulted in significantly quieter, smoother, more powerful vehicles, built with more luxurious and higher quality materials. The Audi transmission was also much more refined.

  • I had an Audi 80 once and was amazed almost daily in it ! It was a strong built but very comfortable car with only 57 horse power, yet it got me up 200 km/h no problem at all while using only 6 to 7 litres of gas! It would climb an incline of around 30% even in the 5th gear which always made me wonder how this car could come up with so much torque in the 5 gear, yet go up to 200 km/h on the Autobahn with ease !

  • In 2011 I gave the 2003 Model Audi A6 2.5 V6 TDI a try, kept it for 4 years until I switched back to Mercedes.
