  • My dad was scuba diving by himself in Bermuda and came across a huge school of “pretty shiny fish”. He swam around them for a while, came back to the hotel, and asked my mom to help him find out what they were. My dad wasn’t wearing his reading glasses so he very excitedly said to my mom “Hun look this was the pretty shiny fish” while pointing to a barracuda. My dad swam with about 15 barracudas unknowingly, alone, in a foreign country.

  • Fisherman here! The second you mentioned shiny beads with Barracuda involved I knew immediately where this was going. The amount of times Ive seen people catch legal sized ones just tying a shiny coin to their hook is more than I could count. Ive also seen plenty of new people to the sport wonder why their line is completely shredded at the swivel because they got the shiny metal ones instead of the special painted ones to avoid the issues of barracuda chomping at them and destroying/breaking the line

  • As soon as I realised it was the beeds drawing them closer, my heart stopped. Barracudas are attracted to shiny objects and veiw it as a food source. I'd of made the water turn brown.

  • We had a similar diving experience. My husband's dive watch got the barracuda's attention and I saw him slap his hand over his wrist when it swam toward us. They are the ultimate "oooooo shiny" fish!

    • I came up with an idea for a character who had an ability centered around a Barracuda (it was a stand for JoJo's bizarre adventure based on the song Barracuda) One of the main weaknesses of the ability was that the Barracuda would always attack shiny objects instead of its target... it was used by one of the members of my main cast who has a light based ability. So I knew what was happening right from the start... I'm glad you weren't hurt, though!

    • @senabecool7232 creates an illusion of various sea life in a large area... through this, the user convinces their targets that their stand is actually a colony stand instead of just the Barracuda... based on how the song is itself about how Heart's lead singer was angry at their previous publisher after they created a fake story of her being in a relationship with her sister... the songs root in lies leads to an ability based entirely on a string of lies the opponent leads their enemy to believe. Edit: should mention, the Barracuda and all its illusions appear on land, with the fish swimming through the air...

  • I majored in biology and even took an educational trip to Hawaii back in high school, so the second you brought up getting beads in your hair, I KNEW that’s where the story was going. Barracudas and sharks are attracted to shiny objects (and surfers on their surfboards) bc it resembles characteristics of animals in their diet.

  • Thank you for sharing this story; most divers I know (myself included) have stories like this lurking somewhere in our dive logs😂❤ Asthma ended my 25-year diving career right as I was finally getting around to Masters certification. In all that time diving in cold lakes and warm oceans, being an outsider in a quiet, near weightless environment (once properly neutrally buoyant), I was privileged to have many encounters with aquatic life on reefs and wrecks - including huuuge Barracudas, Moray Eels, stingrays, turtles, dolphins - and a very large, curious Tiger Shark (we both decided to go our separate ways, me swimming backward facing him the whole time). For the record, I always dove with a utility knife for some protection, not that I ever had to use it beyond cutting a plastic six-pack ring from a turtle.

  • It's funny that only a couple days ago I was watching a video called "The Biology of Subnautica" by Curios Archive where he talks about how the sea stalkers are like barracudas in the fact that they like shiny things. The only difference being that one does it because it was programmed in the game to do so and the other does it because shiny things remind it of the prey it consumes. Once I put that and the shiny beads together I felt like I knew where the story was going, but I feel that knowing that knowledge makes the story more interesting to listen to. Congrats on the 10 years of being on KZhead.

    • From the PDA "The stalker appears to be attracted to titanium deposits, which tends to sharpen and put stress on its teeth" and "The stalker's teeth are unusually hard, and fast-growing". It's probably more that they just do it to sharpen their teeth much like how a cat scratches certain things to break their claws. They also like to move metal scrap to a specific location kinda like a nesting behavior rather than just biting it once, thinking its food.

  • As soon as I heard "shiny beads" I immediatly shouted out, "NO! DON'T DO THAT!" Not only does it look like scales but fish are attracted to bright shiny things. ESPECIALLY predatory ones. I am surprised the diving instructor didn't make her take them out before they went on a dive. Most instructors know better.

  • I am 13 and I got my diving certification in Norway for my 12th birthday, but when I was doing my training one of the experienced divers shared a story about how he got stuck under ice and almost didn’t get out. There was also another person that went cave diving and ran out of air so he had to breath the trapped air from the top of the cave.

  • 🎉Congratulations on the Anniversary!🎉 Yeah, the moment Becca mentioned the braids I knew what was coming. As someone who grew up in the Caribbean one of the first things I was taught by my dad (who was a divemaster himself, other kids get driving lessons he got me Padi certified for my 18th) was that you never wear any shiny jewelry when diving in waters that have barracuda, their eyesight isn't that good and their favourite food is a type of fish called a Jack that have a silver body, so they'll go for anything shiny. To those Barracuda Becca's head probably looked like a school of Jacks just swimming out in the open, which is to say a free all you can eat buffet for them. I grew up hearing horror stories about a wealthy tourist who insisted on wearing a very expensive silver divers watch against the divemasters recommendation and lost not only the watch but the hand it was attached to.

  • What I really like about this episode is how you animated the barracudas. They could have been just well animated and look intimidating, but instead you made them both intimidation and hillarious at the same time. Especially with the car during the chase, one of them calling the other Frankie, their facial expressions, ect. They barely had any screen time but you choose to make them as fun and interesting as they are intimidating.
