Wildlife photography behind the scenes - New series from Denmark
BadgersEp.1: • When months of hard wo...
Badgers Ep.2: • WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY b...
This time I am alone on the small protected island to photograph badgers in the woodlands.
I am extremely lucky this time, and this is wildlife photography when it is best - at least if you ask me. My job here is wildlife photography and film making while the scientist I am working with on the project is investigation the behaviour and trying to draw some conclusions.

••• Q&A •••
Q: Is there any someone travel with you to help you vlogging or just yourself handle vlogging and capture the wildlife
A: I am photographing and filming myself. It can be a bit challenging sometimes when I am photographing shy animals and that is also why I sometimes stop vlogging and just show some photos afterwards. I have my vlogging camera on a small tripod and I just bring it with me every time I am out photographing. Especially on a job like this where I am working with the scientist to document the life and behaviour of the badgers, getting the photos is first priority and then I am just doing my best to share the experiences with all of you.
Q: Were you using all silent shutter with the mirror up?
A: On my Z6 I am always using the silent shutter. This camera does not have a mirror which is also why I can photograph in total silent mode. When I am using my D850 (which is rare) I just use silent shutter, but still with the mirror flipping. It makes some noise but it is rarely a problem.
Q: Now you have hand the Z series cameras for best part of a year. You now know the good bad and other how dose they compere to your old D850 and much love D5?
A: It might be better to make a video about this, but let me try and make it short. There are 3 main reasons why I am using the Nikon Z6 over let's say the D850 and the D5 but a few disadvantages:
1. Since I also do a lot of video recordings I get huge advantages in the mirrorless technology. Better autofocus and the option to look through the viewfinder while recording.
2. I can zoom in in the viewfinder to finetune focus manual - I have just made a video about that.
3. I can now photograph completely silent.
Among the disadvantages the most obvious is the autofocus in photo mode on the Z6 - it can not compare to the D850 and the D5 when it comes to tracking challenging subjects.
Q: Do you you used teleconverter in your 600mm lens while shooting?
A: Yes I do that sometimes, but often I am struggling with low light and I prefer to have that extra light coming in at f/4. Still the converter is a great a flexible option that I often bring with me. I use the 1,4x
Q: How many batteries did you have out with you?
A: Usually 6 + USB charger and powerbank. I have made a video about that: • How I CHARGE BATTERIES...
Q: What Arca style clamp are you using on the manfrotto?
A: Can't see the brand name on it. Bought it on Amazon.
Q: For your handheld vlogging outside which lens did you use?
A: I am using the Nikon Z 27-70mm f/4S
Q: I noticed that your focus limiter was set to Full, despite you taking images of wildlife which is usually quite far away. Why do you not use the focus limiter on your 600mm f4 VR FL, or was it just mistakenly set to "Full?
A: The badgers cubs sometimes comes very close, so I use the full range. Though it would often be better to use the limiter.
••••••••••••
In this video I am on a desolate, protected island in Denmark to do wildlife photography.
Since early March I have been working hard and systematically with trail cameras and tracking to find and photograph foxes and badgers in the scandinavian nature. Now finally the hard work and all the effort pays off.
Together with my friend and colleague, scientist Sussie Pagh I have got permission to a protected island in Denmark and here we finally found an active badger den.
Sussie Pagh is a scientist employed at the University of Aalborg. At the time being she studies the breeding behavior of badgers on the Island. With surveillance cameras she studies the diurnal activity of the badgers at Vorsø and compare it to the activity of badgers living in agricultural areas i.e. in areas with human activity. In the future it is the plan to investigate the diet of the badgers on Vorsø, where they seem to thrive extremely well.

  • You don't need patience when you know how to enjoy nature, I even enjoy "boring" moments. Just the peace, the wind, the light of the sun between the trees, the sounds of the birds, that alone is enough for me, and often I get an extra in the shape of a deer or wild boar, etc. ....... Thank you Morten for reliving recognizable wonderful moments while I sit at home. Even your sigh is recognizable when you came out of the forest.
