How to Shade Basic Forms - Pencil Tutorial

Learn how to add shading with a pencil to basic forms in this fundamental drawing tutorial. For more on this lesson, visit thevirtualinstructor.com/shape...
Shading is the process of adding to value to a drawing. When we get the values right, the illusion of form and light are communicated in the drawing. By learning how to draw basic forms, we can be more successful when drawing more complex subjects. This exercise is completed on bristol paper, but any drawing paper will result in similar results.

  • Total beginner and I am missing a lot of information here. Where exactly did you assume your light source to be? A mark on the paper would help to visualise that. How do you determine (construct) where the "core shadow", "midtone" and "hightlight" areas should be placed? Where does that "reflective hightlight"come from and would it still be there if the object was not placed on a white surface? If this is not targeted for beginners then never mind - otherwise it would be great if you could add that info.

    @inkoksikate@inkoksikate2 жыл бұрын

    • Late reply but to help you out (if you still need help) finding and understanding the different tones of shadow is very tricky. To be able to understand and master it, you must draw from real life. Ik it can be very intimidating to draw from real life but its really the best route to become a decent artist. These kind of videos usually lack information and basic techniques, and for beginners its very easy to be demotivated because they don’t understand whats happening and end up memorizing things. for example the way he drew the cast shadow is very unclear but the good thing is, cast shadows are very easy to understand and can be learned pretty quickly. Sometimes understanding the simple physics and concepts on why and where shadows and values exist help you draw more accurately. And with drawing from life practice, you’ll be able to improve your visual library and eventually draw from imagination without being limited to one light source direction like this video showed I hope this helped, Good luck 😁

  • i am trying to learn to draw so I am here watching videos. In this one you did do the basic shapes, but you only use reflected light on the shadow in the objects that are rounded surface. Does this imply that flat surfaces, along with hard edges, do not get notable reflected light on the shadow side?? When I draw I am drawing my initial forms with an HB pencil, then i go over it with the 2B to darken and shade, and lastly I am using the 4B for further darkening as needed. Should anything be changed here?

    • he was using graphite pencils. they are easy to find at local craft stores or at bigger ones like michaels or hobby lobby etc. they normally come in packs of six or more and explain on the back what the ranges of hard to soft led are in the pencils. there are plenty of other videos on yt that go further into detail about how to use them as well.
