The Most Overrated NBA 2K Game

NBA 2K17 was and still is overrated. It was the start of 2K's drop in quality and care, and the end of 2K's focus on the offline player. Despite an insanely buggy launch, terrible AI, and predatory business practices, it blows my mind that some consider 2K17 to be one of the best NBA 2K titles of all time.

  • One of the terrible things they started in this 2K is limiting MyCareer to Online ONLY access, meaning you can't play any 2K MyCareer from 2K17 until now once they shut the servers off, so you can't even retrospectively play one of if not THE most popular mode in the game when you try to play it now

    @TyBaller@TyBaller Жыл бұрын
    • They need sued cause that's illegal to pay for a product n can't go back to play it fun fact back in the day they opened 2k14 servers back up before turning them off completely

    • 17 had to be the blueprint for that because you can’t play my career if you’re not online on the most recent 2ks either

    • I used to love Mycareer it was a must play game mode for me. It got so bad I stopped buying 2k completely. Now, however, with the my eras franchises mode I just make my player in a draft class, set the game so I can only play as myself. I play about 10 games a season and slowly upgrade my player tweaking the game as I go. Playing a career through the 80s into the 90s is really fun. But it’s sad I had to abandon Mycareer completely. I’ve even gone back and played 2k12 on the ps3 just to experience the old mode as it was.

    • I was fine with 2K16's limitations. 2K17 took it too far with the role player aspect. I made an Outside PG in 2K16 and was still able to get contact dunk animations, handle the ball, and of course shoot. You could even get every badge in the game to Gold. The best player I played with in that game had a 5'11 Balanced build that basically got contact dunks at will and was still a great shooter lol

  • I love your content SD and I think you made some pretty valid arguments with supporting criticism. A.I was braindead as someone who played MyGm and mycareer all day, Multiple glitches in the park, and a downgrade in presentation from 2k16, but it all boils down to what you said fond memories. As of now 2k is extremely dry with expensive monetization, dull unfair gameplay and the community is less a community and more seeing who’s the best on the game (aka who can abuse cheese more). But 2k17 even with its cheese was fun. 2k content would leap forward with multiple 2k KZheadrs creating content that you rarely see nowadays, the mycareer while corny at times was memorable and the storyline and character dynamics made it seem like you just weren’t playing games to upgrade and play in park but playing to also see what happened in the story, you could go into park with 55 overall centers and still do good , and lots of little gameplay changes such as them trying to dial back on animations made for funner gameplay moments. I was about 13 when it came out and I had a lot of good memories from the game you just don’t get with 23. While 2k23 is a better basketball game it’s not a better game if that makes sense.

  • This is spot on. Glad you started off with the launch. All I can think about is that stupid basketball loading everything that would either take forever or never load. The gameplay was a big downgrade. So glad you mentioned blacktop. 2k17 dropped my freshman year of college. My roommates and anybody that wanted to play 2k had to see us in Blacktop and even after 2k17 dropped we would still go back to 2k16 for blacktop, it is a grail. Moving into my career, I played a lot of offline 2k with 2k17 because being in college we would bet money on play now games but when I did play my career, the online was good but not the end all be all of 2k. Parks were recycled. I feel like that 2k17 gets so much praise for critics because of the time that ir dropped which was 2016, a simpler time and also Fredo leading the 2k community. I think Fredo’s run would’ve made most 2ks look great and since it was the peak of his run and this is the 2k during that time you just look back and think it was the best. Don’t believe? You can’t tell me the park era is the same as it is now as it was back then. 2k16 should get way more praise than 17. 2k19 was a great game to me as well. A big recovery

You had rim protectors and Lockdowns making jumpers like they were DeRozen and Steph Curry. 2k failed to balanced archetypes in this game and the attributes were so limiting. Also, Kobe Bryant was not on the active roster. This was the first 2k game after he retired in the 2016 season.

  • In terms of gameplay, this game was not bad at all. Loved the animations and Play Now against friends was entertaining. The main reason I put this as Top 2 worst 2K (2K20 is 1 for me) is simply because of the MyCAREER. I was very disappointed with the limitations you had in creating builds because it just felt like MyRolePlayer. I made a Point Forward because it was one of the most balanced builds in the game, and it was the only build that got contact dunks without having to be a Slasher or glitch the game (Point Forwards got Big Man Contact Dunks). It was my transition from a pure Sharpshooter into a more all-around player though.

  • the overhaul to MyLeague and MyGM makes 2k17 not overrated for that reason. The draft classes could be carefully made, and it wasn't just a bunch of cookie cutter players. I ended up making like 10 draft classes, downloaded another 5-6 and had my own league last into the 2030's. There is nothing else like it. The amount of control and creativity with the simulation aspect of the game is incredible. I do agree with others that 2k16 had the best gameplay but 2k17 franchise mode is legit AF

    • 100%. I feel like this where any analysis really depends which modes you prefer but 2k17 took 16's MyLeague/GM to the next level. Hell the next two or three levels. It's probably the peak of the experience. Or 18, which just added the MyGM storyline. (Otherwise it's essentially the same.) But then 19 and 20 were re-skins that got progressively worse because the player generation system wasn't getting rebalanced with the new (inflated) player ratings and badges and because they stopped adding/cleaning up features. Then NextGen -- ugh. It just doesn't work. Contracts, player generation, UI, player progression, stat simulation, overall balance ... It's just bad. MyEras is a great concept in 23 and same for some of the newer features like assistant coaches but nothing works right. You just have to ignore way too much for my tastes to genuinely enjoy it.

  • The best 2ks were when the cpu was actually challenging but in a realistic way. You couldnt just sprint past the defense every play as if it was a track meet, they didnt overly double super early in the game to the point where your best player has 12+ assists by the end of the first quarter. Back in like 2k14 and before, offline game modes eere actually fun. Doing a franchise mode, gm mode, all star weekend, the blacktop having games of 21, 1v1 up to 5v5 allowing you to choose full or half court, 2k12 having team usa 1992, 2012 teams along wirh international teams, i can keep going. Mycareer/myplayer you didnt have to oay to be elite. And the nba games within that mode were fun and difficult but again not in a super cheating way. I remember it being a challenge to get 50+ points against some teams when now a days you basically start out getting 40+ if you pay to upgrade your player taking away the progression aspect of seeing your player to from being ok to being a demigod. Oh yeah you could make all around players that were tall, fast athletic without habdicaps allowing full control of your player design. They had to asd in a ton of badges to kinda go back to how it was with 6'9+ guard like builds.

The archetype system was barebones so the builds were limited compared to 16 and meta builds became normal. My career was boring. And the servers took a step back from 16. Park after dark was garbage. And one place I disagree with you on is 2k20. 2k20 was slept on. The biggest issue I had with the game was the lies they told to start the year and how the game was fine at launch but people complained about being too hard to shoot on day one and then the patches screwed the game up and the game didn’t become better til about January of 2020

  • Sorry, I'm gonna have to disagree with you. I believe that this game is probably one of the best they ever made. It is generally regarded by many as one of the top NBA 2ks ever, and for good reason. Honorable mention to '11 and '16 as well. 23 was also pretty good aside from the stripped down presentation. Metacritic ranks the PS4 version of NBA 2k17 as the 3rd best NBA 2k game ever with a score of 90. '17 was actually the last good NBA 2k game prior to 23. They still used the same motion system as '16 and before. It also had an awesome my career mode. '16's career mode was slightly better, but you can't go wrong with '17. 17 was fantastic, they actually played defense, although sometimes the brick wall defenders were a bit much, but I would prefer better defense than the game being too easy. '17 also had the best presentation of any NBA 2k game ever made, yeah I mean ever! They have rotating commentators each and every game, 2 different courtside announcers, and the most commentary lines ever recorded for a 2k game. This is the game where the devs actually went around to all the NBA arenas and recorded the sounds of each and every NBA arena and incorporated them into the game. That's innovation for you. And if that wasn't enough, they actually showed interviews with players during the game. NBA 2K17 was like watching an actual NBA broadcast on TNT. They still had the pregame show with Kenny Smith, Shaq, and Ernie Johnson, and also a halftime show and postgame show. This game also was the last one where when a player got injured on the court, you could see it, and the player would stay down. NBA 2K17 was the most complete game they ever made, which is why is it so highly regarded. Was the gameplay perfect? No, but it was much better than 18-21. This game is so good, many people are still playing it today with updated rosters rather than current gen NBA 2K. I love your videos, but can't get behind the hate for '17.

The grind only for chump change VC, but then thinking you got a deal for VC when you actually bought some, only to blow $50 worth of VC on two attributes! 2K16 wasn't bad, and I bought that game in March of 2016. Playing that game had me hyped for the launch of 2K17. But after experiencing constant server crashes, falling asleep during mad grinding games just for chump change, and having spent $150.00 on VC.... I was done with this game, and didn't buy another one until 2K20. To this day I don't do My Player or My Career, I just play the Franchise mode, and that's it. I don't buy any special editions of this game neither, as the extra stuff you get isn't worth the extra money you pay!

  • 17 was the last with a genuine skill gap to be good. They need the offense to make it seem the defense is better when the shit like the paint d has never gotten better since 18. The strip shit away every year diminishing the skill gap more and more making the game dead on top of that trash events and rewards. Dribbling/Movement was the only thing to separate the stick skill level throughout players now it’s so diminished there’s no way to be different and the most effective moves are becoming the easiest to do therefore leaving no reason to practice in my court or have a insensitive to get better.

  • What you guys fail to understand is the depth in the mechanics in the game. I was a guy that dribbled the shot clock out. The amount of moves you could pull from different angles. Diagonal forward, diagonal backward, slide to side, forward, backwards. The depth in the controls was by far the deepest in 2ks history. Whether you were “cheesing” or not you understand that the engine that game was built on is completely gone. I suppose the issue is the love people have for this game isn’t for the simulation aspect. It’s the user on ball experience that captivated our minds. 2k17 is top 2 for me because I can still vividly remember the full control that I had over my player that I haven’t seen anything close to since. Everything you said was spot on though. I just think to understand why the game was great would require you to have a deeper knowledge of the mechanics.

You can actually read the defense and make the right decision to get open looks instead of animation hunting like in the other 2ks. Also you can time blocks and steals a lot better in 2k17 vs. having to spam steal and block in other years. 2k17 also has the most responsive controls of any 2k I’ve played.
