Young People In Germany: Role Models, Hobbies And Age Limits | Meet the Germans

2021 ж. 28 Сәу.
212 644 Рет қаралды

What's it like to be a young person in Germany? What do German teenagers get up to in their free time? And who are their role models? Rachel finds out more in this week's Meet the (young) Germans - and welcomes a special guest, German TikTok star Younes Zarou!
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from unusual bans to meaty cuisine or haunted castles. This week: Young people in Germany.

    • Yeah those words used to be so foreign to us young people, like a couple years ago when "smombie" was elected, nobody i knew had ever heard that word before, but i feel like recent winners are more accurate. Like "lost" and "Ehrenmann/Ehrenfrau" or just "Ehre" get used a lot where I am from and "I bims" I feel like was more of a subculture but not unheard of. They're getting much better

    • It's weird how they basically used to make up all these Jugendwörter. No one ever used these. All these words sounded really ridiculous to everyone. But most of them stuck. Like "hartzen" for example.

    • Well as a German 15 year old I would like to say, that because we normally get graded every week or so and because one year of online school / lockdown all our "Klassenarbeiten" have been pushed back further and further. Meaning when the lockdown ends we will have to write about 10 major tests in one or two weeks. And since the teachers need to evaluate us on our work in school this is the only chance meaning if you get a bad grade there is no balancing out, it's all or nothing now. Very stressy :(

Here, the young people like us are too much focused with education and career which is increasing the stress level. Till age 20, at least they remain dependent on their parents and are close enough to them. However the hobbies and most used apps are all same. 🙂🙂

  • German youngers sound pretty inspired. :) I think as part of globalization, young people around the world are thinking more and more similar. The main difference with my country (Argentina) is that they are probably under more pressure, because the economy is bad, and are worried about global and everyday life things at the same time. So, the topic of mental health had become popular. And the only heroes in this mess are memes.

Thes old "youth words of the year" often had no support by the german youth. The german kids laugt over the words and there was a big lack of understanding. So it is obvious, that you don´t liked the word from 2008.

    • This year is the first year that teenagers can actually nominate the words themselves instead of voting from a pre-chosen collection of words. So what german teenagers did was to nominate completely random and partly nonsensical words without any meaning at all. • The pandemic made one thing pretty clear: Younger people - to be more specific: those who are not allowed to go to an election yet - are basically nonexistent to the politicians. Billions for Lufthansa, but not a single air filter - recommended by almost every scientist - for schools. Supplying every school with such a filter system in Germany would've cost a sixth of what Lufthansa got with the first support package. "Protect and support is still the motto in air traffic" quote of Andreas Scheuer, Federal Transport Minister. What did the politicians say about the air filter systems for schools: Too expensive. To bring it into perspective: Spahn always says he is confident to be able to make "everyone" in Germany an offer for the vaccination by the mid of this year...to this day, there is not a single vaccine available in Germany that is approved for children...so much for the "everyone".

  • Hello from germany, the Jugendwort des Jahres thing has multiple big problems. 1.) It is not "the official" youth word of the year. It is more a "product" of the german publisher Langscheid. [1] 2.) The process of choosing the youthword is a vote. Wich is good. The problem is, that everyone is allowed to vote as often as the want. Bringing up the internet trolls corrupting it. [2] 3.) The final word (haha wordjoke) has a jury at Langscheid. When they think the choosen word is problematic or they don't want it in their dictionary they remove it. So the vote is nonsense. [3] 4.) Youth language in general dosn't have to be political correct. But Langscheid and the Jugendwort des Jahres tries to be political correct. My personal oppinion is that a traditional german company tries to stay in toutch with a generation not depending on books. Their books. Our generation look up words on the internet, not in a physical dictionary. I knew most of the former words because they were in that competition. I never heard most of them before that voting or used them till today. Maybe there is a bubble of people using it, but I don't know anyone. But i knew most of the banned words. Build your own oppinion. Greeting Mo PS: Really good work Rachel. It costed me a sleeplees night but i watched all of your videos.
