The University of Notre Dame football team (10-3) earned its 10th victory of the season with a dominating 40-8 victory over Oregon State (8-5) in the 90th Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, on Friday afternoon.
The Irish piled up 448 yards of offense compared to just 197 for the Beavers, who would manage just two rushing yards in the game. First-time starting quarterback Steve Angeli was hyper efficient, completing 14 of 18 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns.
One of those touchdown passes went to game MVP Jordan Faison, who led the Irish with five catches for 115 yards. Jayden Thomas also caught four passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.
The Irish defensive effort, highlighted by four sacks, was led by Most Outstanding Lineman of the Game Jordan Botelho, who finished the contest with a career-high five tackles, a sack and a quarterback hurry.
Notre Dame started its drive with three rushes for a first down, then Angeli found Faison wide open down the right sideline for 55 yards. The Irish returned to the ground game with four straight runs, including a nine-yard jaunt from Gi’Bran Payne, to earn a first down at the OSU five-yard line.
Oregon State forced its first defensive play for a loss, putting the Irish back at the eight-yard line on third down. Angeli found Thomas at the three and the Irish wideout turned up the field and powered into the end zone for the first score of the game and his first touchdown since the season opener against Navy.
The Irish put together another drive on their next possession into Oregon State territory, led by Thomas with receptions of 26 and 14 yards. Spencer Shrader’s 50-yard field goal effort was long enough but ended up wide left.
Oregon State moved into Notre Dame territory on their next possession, but Notre Dame’s Javontae Jean-Baptiste sacked the quarterback on first down, JD Bertrand broke up a pass on second-and-long and DJ Brown made the tackle after a short reception to force a punt to the Notre Dame 10-yard line.
Late in the first half, Oregon State had the ball at midfield. The Beavers attempted a fake punt which Notre Dame was well prepared for. Joshua Burnham burst through the line and tackled the Beaver upback for a loss of five yards and Notre Dame took over at the Oregon State 44-yard line with 3:29 remaining in the second quarter.
Jadarian Price started the drive with a 13-yard run, then Angeli found Thomas on a roll out for 11 yards and a first down. Angeli connected with Faison for a first down to the three-yard line. Two plays later, Price walked into the end zone for the second Irish touchdown of the game.
Notre Dame received the ball to start the second half and moved their lead to 17 points on a 44-yard field goal from Shrader. The drive was keyed by a third down reception by Eli Raridon for nine yards and a 33-yard reception by Faison.
Howard Cross III ended Oregon State’s next drive with a 10-yard sack on third down to force a punt to the Notre Dame 40.
The next Irish drive started with a 16-yard pass to Jaden Greathouse, an eight-yard run from Price then a 17-yard scramble from Angeli to give the Irish a first down. Angeli found Faison at the goal line for a 13-yard scoring strike and the Irish moved the lead to 24-0.
On the next drive, a third down sack from Xavier Watts was followed by a fourth-down sack from Botelho to provide the Irish offense the ball at the OSU 42.
Angeli began the drive with a rush for 14 yards then found Matt Salerno on third down for a conversion down to the Oregon State seven-yard line.
Notre Dame’s defense stuffed the Oregon State running back on the first play for a safety. Burnham and Drayk Bowen combined for the stop.
The Irish took advantage of the short safety kickoff. Price broke a 54-yard run through the right side of the line to put the Irish in scoring range, then Love finished it off with a catch and run of 13 yards for a touchdown.
Oregon State followed with its only scoring drive of the game. A 33-yard touchdown pass spoiled the Irish shut out, but Notre Dame still had one more drive in it. Devyn Ford rushed for 31 yards on the drive after the Irish recovered an onside kick. Chase Ketterer then earned his place in history with the first touchdown of his career. A do-it-all player for the Irish, Ketterer would have been the third emergency quarterback for the Irish in the game today.

  • Cheer, Cheer for CMF & Notre Dame football! Great game by Steve "Peanut Butter " Angeli. He had plenty of LOVE & made Oregon St pay the PRICE. Next year we "only" have Riley Leonard & the return of Mike Denbrock. Futures so bright, I gotta wear shades. Yeah I went there

    • Sorry, I’m not buying into the “peanut butter” thing. Kids been on the ND roster for two years and we’re just finding about this now?? lol And besides, who can’t figure out how to pronounce his name? They probably felt better that Audric Estime sat the game out so they didn’t butcher his name all game.

    • @irishron4861 what is there to buy into? He stepped and played well & now will go back to the bench. I'm excited bout Denbrock being back & what Riley Leonard can do since he has wheels Hartman lacked.

    • @briansarah2745 who Angeli? That would be too bad. Not cuz he is great, he played a great game but also backup for a reason. Rather it would suck cuz ND has steady stream of QB transfers both in and out

    • @@83GC I was referring to CBS making a bid deal on how to pronounce the kids name. And he's not going to sit on the bench. If he's not sticking around to get that ND degree he'll go play elsewhere.

  • Freshman Walk On Jordan Faison to player of the game in the bowl game. He is our best wideout. Kudos to him.

  • Perfection in all 3 phases, this was a statement for how far Marcus Freeman has come as a coach. The Irish will be a problem next year, and dare I say real national title contenders.

  • When Angeli came in to relieve Hartman in the season after a blowout (forgot which game) and scored with ease, I was wondering why the coaching staff never gave him a chance. I like the transfer portal to some degree. But Angeli's superior talent and decision making should have been developed this season instead of playing a qb for a single season only. I want a qb to learn and grow with the offense. Not every transfer is going to be Joe Burrow. And remember he was benched at Ohio State like Angeli is at ND. And I believe he at least played 2 seasons at LSU before striking gold. Hartman and the offense were just so inconsistent this year.

    • Gerad Parker is gone now, so that is one of the reasons why the offense looked better today.

    • @@jeffohl9371 I believe now that ND has Guidugli as QB coach, and just hired Denbrock as their OC , we are actually going to see that happen, especially when we have talented quarterbacks like Carr and Knight coming in. I wouldn't overlook Minchey either, I think he's going to be great given the chance, whether that's at ND or elsewhere is to be seen.

    • Leonard chose Duke. Angeli came to Notre Dame. Let Angeli play. Leonard is fragile cannot hold up to solid defenses as he fell against Notre Dame this year.

    • @ruffian2952…I don’t give a s@*t who starts as long as they win football games. I loathe the transfer portal but it’s part of the game now and glad CMF is adapting to it. I think there is a big decision for him to make next season. Because as we saw with our own two eyes, ND lost three games this season and one can easily say transfer QB Sam Hartman was the reason they lost two of those, especially the Louisville game. But the flip side of that coin says they don’t win nine games with someone else at QB. So it is what it is

  • I wonder with the major improvements to the offensive side of the coaching staff if Rico Flores and Tobias Merriweather will regret leaving? It seemed like really rash decision and most likely getting bad advice from individuals outside the Notre Dame realm. Also, Bronco Nagurski award winner, Xavier Watts is playing in the game while other ND players are not playing because of preparations for the NFL Draft. I hope NFL GMs take that into account when making a decision to draft Xavier Watts in the future.

    @jcarreon1983jc@jcarreon1983jc4 ай бұрын
    • @jcarreon1983jc…Merriweather never panned out and was never going to. He reminded me of the kid that transferred to Houston a few years ago (his name slips my mind), among other kids from past Irish teams. You just never know. As far as Rico Flores goes, I wonder if he was homesick and wanted to be closer to home at UCLA?? In any case it says a lot about their WR room if a lacrosse player jumps in mid-season and is your best option. And I say that believing Faison has skills. But with Kris Mitchell and Beaux Collins coming in they’ll be better than OK. Unless of course, they flake out like Merriweather lol

      @irishron4861@irishron48614 ай бұрын
    • probably not because they would be behind on depth chart. Cam Williams the incoming Freshman will get reps at WR and take over Merriweather role in deep passing game. Faison passed Flores on depth chart pretty much. The kids Flores and Merriweather and Tyree for that matter I wish them the best. Tyree probably would have still got alot of plays next year and will be missed. However Flores and Merriweather would be sitting bench mostly.
