Have you ever wondered how every NHL team got its Logo? Well I did too! I decided to take an unreasonably long time to research each team and create this video. Hopefully you learn a thing or two, too! Each team is listed in the order that they were founded or became a part of the National Hockey League and I try and cover every logo the team has ever had! I hope you enjoy the history of every NHL logo!

Nice to see a random shoutout to SmarterEveryDay, CGP Grey, and Roman Mars in a hockey video. Nice crossover that I didn’t expect
Haha thanks! I love all their stuff so I was excited to slide in some shout outs!
The Minnesota North Stars, Atlanta Flames & Québec Nordiques logo's are AWESOME❕❕ The absolute best NHL team logo's ever created.
I do really like that logo! It’s really high up there for sure!
The red sky/negative space in the Minnesota Wild logo also loosely forms an "MW" lots of cool stuff packed in that logo
Nice! Yeah the logo that keeps on giving!
Not a Minnesota Wild fan but their logo is absolute perfection. I can't think of a better logo in any other sport right now.
Yeah it’s really great!!
I always thought the Quebec Nordiques’ logo kinda looked like an abstract elephant. I noticed the stick and puck, but never gathered that the main part was an igloo Also, the fact that the Columbus team is named the Blue Jackets with a Yellowjacket mascot, so they combined those colors and actually made him green, is quite underratedly(new word, cool) clever!
Haha I can definitely see the elephant 😂
One of the classic great logos, along with the hartford whalers.
Great video! Didn't know that blue was chosen to match the city's other teams. I always thought that "blueshirts" stood for their blue balls since '67.
Haha thanks for watching!
Really great video! Helped me understand the leagues history
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh days when you get to the beach
That green and yellow North Stars logo from 85-91 is one of the coolest team logos I've ever seen! :D
Yeah a great retro vibe for sure!
I am going to get my hair done tomorrow morning so if you can come by tomorrow morning and pick up the stuff I need to get it done before you come
Been waiting patiently for this video. Absolutely love it
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool and informative video. Thanks for all the in depth research😁😁
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching!
I was waiting for this one. Great video
Glad you liked it!
Man, this is one heck of an interesting logo history. I thought some of the original sixes logos got the current logos right from the beginning of their inception since they looked more "old-fashioned" than the rest of the league logos. Guess I was wrong. By the way, after this video, the NBA is next?
Thanks for checking it out! And yes working hard on the NBA logos!
NBA logos video is out if you want to check it out! 🙌
Love your vids I subscribed
Thanks so much!
That Hartford Whalers logo is so slick, one of my favorite examples of merging letters in something else. The old one is pretty classy too.
Absolutely agree! One of my favorite logos!
If you remember your Roman history, the individual legion’s commander was a Legatus (or Legate), a Senator chosen by his fellow Senators to lead the legion. EDIT: and to be technical, Legates were the generals, while the Centurions are closer to lieutenants or colonels
Yeah that does ring a bell! That makes sense with the distinction of the the centurion being more akin to a lieutenant!
Also, a centurion's crest was sideways.
The Sharks logo has got to be one of the coolest logos of all time.
Yeah I really enjoy the design of the sharks logo!
Your description of Florida is spot on. I am a lifelong resident of the state so I know
🤣 haha thanks for watching!
One thing about the Islanders logo that I didnt know until very recently and ive been an islander fan 20+ years: the 'I' in Islanders is pointed and angled for a reason, it points to Uniondale in western Nassau County where the Nassau Coliseum is, the original home of the NYI for nearly 40 years. And about the Fisherman logo: it was changed because Long Island has a rich maritime history from whaling in the early colonial days on the North Shore to the current fishing industry that comprises a lot of Long Islands income and things to do in the summer. When it was changed briefly in '95, the Ranger fans got a new chant: "WE WANT FISH STICKS" because it resembled the Gordons Fisherman. I personally liked it but it had to go because of the chants lol
Makes sense! Thanks for watching!
The man on the blackhawks logo is supposed to be Black Hawk himself, not just any man
I do miss the black and orange (1954-2005) NHL logo Also LOVE the Kachina Logo for the 'Yotes. I enjoyed the howling coyote logo, but nothing will beat that original logo.
Agreed! The kachina logo slaps!
@@JustinLearnsThings It does! The Kachina with the moon on shoulder. Oooooh so cool!
The Bruins brang back the throwback 1949-1995 logo, it looks nice on TD Garden ice.
The Canucks also still use the 1978-1997 logo.
I was really was hoping that the Nordiques/Avalanche section was going to touch on how the team nearly became the "Rocky Mountain Xtreme"...
Rocky Mountain extreme is a hall of fame potential name for me!
Very interesting. I always wondered why logos are changed. I knew about the Ducks because I was playing youth hockey at the time, but I didn't know about some of the others. Especially when they didn't relocate or nothing. Relocation I get. Not only that, but I'm an Avalanche fan, so I get it.
Thanks for watching! Yeah sometimes new owners, new eras, lots of losing, not making money, etc. can all lead to new designs!
Great video 🎉
Thank you 😁
The Islanders Logo reminds me the place I was born in 10/26/1963. (Riverhead, New York, that is!!!)
Although it doesn't look like it the "snow" on the Colorado Avalanche logo is supposed to be the letter C for Colorado . Great video !
That’s great! I’ve totally missed it looking at the logos while making it!
I learned a lot about Top Level Hockey 🏒 Logos more Hockey 🏒 Logo exclusively explained videos part 2 would be much appreciated.
Can you imagine that for each NHL teams for their home games, all of there home games for preseason, regular season, and postseason, came out on DVD (From 1977-2006 they would come on either or both DVD and VHS)
That’d be a lot of DVDs!!
Amen to your vexillological commentary
Thanks!! Glad someone else enjoys it!
The man in the Blackhawks' logo is named after the Aboriginal Sauk leader, Black Hawk or Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak(Sauk: Mahkatêwe-meshi-kêhkêhkwa) Also the Blackhawks' original owner, Frederic McLaughlin wanting a team in Chicago, named the team after the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division which he was a commander of, was named the Black Hawk Division.
Nice jobs!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice video, I have been told that the ”I” in the islanders logo is pointing at the location where the old nassau coloseum is located.
Oh nice I could totally see that being the case!
The Coyotes aren’t called the Phoenix Coyotes. They’re the Arizona Coyotes now.
LOL what the heck! I totally flubbed that! It's even Arizona Coyotes on my script! AND I'M FROM PHOENIX! 🫠 Good catch! I don't know how I missed that!
@@JustinLearnsThingsTo be honest I just call Arizona both Arizona and Phoenix. Panthers are Florida and Miami in my book.
Its still Phoenix Coyotes in my book and heart
Salt Lake City soon
Hopefully they can get a new rink soon. The league needs Arizona to be a successful market.
nicely done just that the canucks had a large V in same colors of the skate , witch came right after the famous flying V logo
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Little side fact: The inspiration for the original Ducks logo came from an animated series that Disney produced called "The Mighty Ducks". A team of anthropomorphized Ducks were featured as the protagonists, who acted as a group of crime fighters, as well as a hockey team in the "universe" portrayed in the series. The leader of the team, who also acted as the goalie named Wildwing, wore a stylized hockey mask, which was used as part of that original logo. Coincidentally, while the Ducks were owned by Disney, they had a mascot that was designed and named after the character Wildwing, who still serves as the Anaheim Ducks' mascot to the present day.
I miss that era of cartoons!
The orange and black NHL Shield was used on a jersey for Allstars game in late 80s early 90s I believe.
Appreciate the comment! Thanks!
*Reads description* Part of the MLB? I think you mean the NHL. Besides that, great vid!
Great catch!! Thank you! Fixed just now! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hope update the list of logos to include the most increase of teams
hope the (new version) ottawa senators win a stanley cup in the future
Thanks for watching!
😂😂😂😂
No that are not
48:56 I think the reason why you would mention Disney for Anaheim Ducks is because of course, weather you went their or not, their is a Disneyland resort. And an addition for a duck character of Disney, there would be a team for Disney in Anaheim called Anaheim Ducks.
I just discovered this after watching this video. I have a buffalo CCM jersey that has that yellow NHL shield on the neck. It’s a team classic jersey though however, but is interesting to me.
Thanks for watching!
fun fact: the Islanders logo is not actually circular. it is slightly wider than it is tall, presumably to fit the titular long island. this results in funny errors because the edge of the logo juts out of pure circular overlays used in like playoff brackets
Nice! Thanks for watching!
You. Forgot. the. REVERSE RETRO LOGOS (great vid btw)
Thanks for watching! Yeah I’ve only seen a few of the reverse retros but they’re pretty dope!!
Well, my first comment I'm going to make is that I've always liked the Buffaslug. 😂 lol, I enjoy this video so far.
Hahah appreciate it, thanks for watching!
It was a B and the eye was the handle of a blue sabre that was the stripe in the B (Buffalo)@@JustinLearnsThings
Sick video. But you forgot to show the iconic blues jersey with the arch in the background, and the jersey with the trumpet and a complete absence of the blues note. I thought those were very interesting
I’ll have to look at that! Thanks for watching!
Can you do a video on every defunct and relocated NHL team?
Yeah that idea is definitely on the list! Glad to know there’s some desire for it!
Their is something I have thought about for relocated teams. When the Minnesota North Stars moved Dallas and being known as the Dallas Stars, for people from Minnesota who couldn't move to Dallas, even if they live in Minnesota but not fan of Minnesota Wild, they would still watch whole each season of Dallas Stars on Bally sports Southwest. The same could be set for some other teams that were relocated to others cities. Atlanta to Calgary (1972-1980) - people in Atlanta would watch each season of Calgary Flames on TV. Atlanta to Winnipeg (1999-2011) Atlanta had another NHL team but they did relocated again so people in Atlanta (1999-2011) would watch each season of Winnipeg Jets on TV. Qaubec to Colorado (1972-1995) people in Qaubec would watch each season of Colorado Avalanche on TV New England to Hartford to Carolina (1972-1979-1997) people in New England and Hartford would watch each season of Carolina Hurricanes on TV. On how very NHL team got their name video, you explained that the New England Whalers were forced to move because the Boston Bruins NHL team was already their. Why can't Massachusetts have two NHL teams? Kansas City to Colorado to New Jersey (1974-1976-1982) people in Kansas City and Colorado would watch each season of New Jersey Devils on TV. What Kansas City did the team play their home games, in Missouri or Kansas? That's what I think for people in that era who basically miss their old team they can still watch the new relocated team on TV if they don't move to that new city. Also I'm curious, when the Cleveland Barions merged with the Minnesota North Stars, what does the word "merged" mean?
Oops, I forgot to mention one more relocated team which is Arizona Coyotes. Winnipeg to Arizona (1972-1996) people in Winnipeg who are not fans of the recent Winnipeg Jets (2011-present) they would would each season of Arizona Coyotes on TV. Also, when the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, why did they named it Winnipeg Jets again? Could they think of any other object, animal or nationality so they don't have to namei it Winnipeg Jets?
I was seeing the top 5 logos you liked and I heard you were from Arizona. I’m in Tucson.
Oh awesome! Yeah I was born and raised here!
@@JustinLearnsThings Generally raised in Arizona?
@@russellwortham2902 Yup! Went to college out of state, but in AZ the rest of the time!
@@JustinLearnsThings very cool

Update your list love seeing the evolution of a team logo
Which teams? I added a bruins video after this one
I'm a rangers fan and you forgot to mention the best alternate logo in NHL history. Of course I'm referring to the Liberty head design. Also the Devils didn't change their color scheme until after the 93-94 season.
Thanks for the clarification!
@@JustinLearnsThings no problem.
Actually, the Devils changed their colors after the 1991-92 (NHL 75th Anniversary) season.
@PrinceAnt722 devils are a trash hockey team they can't even win a cup in a full season they won their three cups in shortened seasons. My rangers are going to win the cup this year even without tarassenko and kane.
@craigkatz1018 Actually, I am a Rangers fan. The only season that the Devils won in a shorten one was 1995. The other two (2000, 2003) were in a full season.
the primary logos for some NHL teams changing some colors updating their color pallet
24:55 The best sports logo ever! Timeless. There'll never be a reason to change it.
Thanks for watching! 🙌
8:12 well at least knowing the leafs, they won't need to redesign the logo anytime soon... :(
Thanks for watching!
What's with the sad face cookie?
wow a person who actually list all the referenced used for their research. Auto follow
Haha I appreciate it! I started to notice some discrepancies out there so I wanted to be diligent on showing my work!
Guess what. When. I was reading NHL in Wikipedia, I found out that there is a 33rd team expanding, and that team will be in Utah. U should update this video on how every NHL team got their and this video.
Will be soon, we’ll see what the name and logo looks like hopefully in the next few months!
@@JustinLearnsThings this Utah team talk has been around for a few years. I've been a hockey fan since 2015-16 (I was 6-7 years old. Now 14, nearly 15. I'll be glad to help out with the research)
I’m almost 100% sure the Minnesota North stars never dropped the north from their name before moving. I could be wrong but after watching this video that really racks my brain so I did a little research and found nothing that says they dropped north from their name ever like I said, I could be wrong, but I just couldn’t find any were confirming this P.s up until 2013 the wild had “Minnesota Wild” arched above the logo you showed.
Yeah its really hard to find so many specific things pre-internet... it probably accounts for half of the time in making these videos! I looked at my notes and this section was built off of this program from the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals: www.sportspaper.info/wiki/index.php/1991_Stanley_Cup_Finals_(Pittsburgh_Penguins_vs._Minnesota_North_Stars) On wikipedia it does say "Following the 1991 Finals run, the North Stars adopted a new logo - the word "STARS" in italicized gold capitals over a green star with a gold outline; the gold now a more metallic shade than the previous yellowish shade." But as with classic wikipedia, there's no source provided for that information. In 'Fabric of the Game' by Chris Creamer & Todd Radom they wrote: "Following the 1991 Finals run, the North Stars adopted a new logo - the word "STARS" in italicized gold capitals over a green star with a gold outline; the gold now a more metallic shade than the previous yellowish shade." So that part of the video was based off of combining those comments on the rebrand descriptions and what may have been that first appearance of the logo on the stanley cup finals program! I would have been up a creek many times without that book by Creamer & Radom! They really helped clear up some of the earlier logos with many of the teams! Thanks so much for your comment! I'd recommend the book if you're interested in Hockey logos and names! They do a really great job with all the teams!
@@JustinLearnsThings that sounds interesting. I’ll give it a look.
Just in time! Hon the Sens!
Thanks for watching! 🙌
@@JustinLearnsThings I still think ya should do the GAA or the prem. Have a good day though
@@JustinLearnsThings oh also you should have mentioned that the sens are a phoenix club of the original Ottawa Senators though and do sometimes use the original Ottawa O
Definitely looking at it!
No way! Did u actually changed the thumbnail of Every Logo Explained | NHL Teams video?
You should have added the California Golden/ Oakland Seals, which moved to Cleveland named the Barons. The Barons lasted 2 years in Cleveland, then merged with the Minnesota North Stars.
Yeah I included them in the names video because of how intricate they are intertwined in a couple different teams. But I didn’t include them in this video since they’re a defunct team. I have thought of doing a video about defunct teams though!
Always thought the H in Montreals logo stood for le Habitants.
Yeah it’s pretty common, but the team marks as an H for the name change from athletique!
A small detail, I don't remember where I read it, but the Canadiens logo contains the letters CHC, the red C in front, the letter H and in the background a white letter C on a blue background. Greets from Chile.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
So since it doesn't really much explain the logo: the spoked wheel in the Bruins logo represents one of Boston's nicknames: the Hub. Originally this was short for the "Hub of New England", around which the region rotated, apparently at one point it was upgraded to the Hub of the Universe though, lol
I love that you described the Panthers’ updated design as mature- I’ve been saying the original logo is reminiscent of a rebellious teenager for years now.😆 Fantastic video! I appreciate the work that went into making it.
Great video. One small note, Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island are pronounced "Nassaw" and "Suffick"
Fun fact: The blue tip on the letter I points to Uniondale, the Islanders' home for almost their entire existence
Nice! Thanks for watching! I appreciate the comments!
And the bruins are breaking out a new logo to celebrate their centennial season
Oh nice I need to look that one up!! Thanks for watching!
Emiliooooo! American Dad fan happening
Haha I was thinking a night a the Roxbury 😅
NHL teams are going reverse retro with their new uniforms sharks, Minnesota wild, Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avs, Dallas Stars and many other hockey teams
Worth noting is that the Avalanche coming down from the A holds a puck.
I was gonna say the same thing
Oh nice! It’s like it was invisible to my eye before you mentioned it!
Your French was great!
Haha don't watch the older videos, you might change your mind lol 😂
@@JustinLearnsThings 👀🗣️🤣😂
Montreal Canadiens: I was told that the letter H on the logo stands for the French word Habitants (a person who lives in a particular place) hence the nickname of the team Habs...
From what I've been able to read, that's a common misconception because of the nickname its ties to the canadiens. CA -> Club Athletique... CH -> Club de Hockey
That’s a common misconception.
Most people think that, but the video is correct. The H is for hockey, Club de Hockey Canadiens.
The H stands for Hockey.
I’m a french canadian from Montreal and I’ve been told the H means Habitants since I was a kid. Habitant was a popular term to talk about french canadians in the 1700~1800’s.
If u watched Arizona Coyotes highlights on KZhead and they play at mullet arena, a college ice hockey arena, do u know any reasons why the players look a little smaller at mullet arena than they r at the other NHL arenas?
I’m not sure, my guess would be that maybe because of the smaller arena the camera angles aren’t what we’re used to from larger arenas!
I ❤ The Oilers logo. 😊
Thanks for watching!
Kinda interesting how many teams have switched from their original logos and then switched back to them in recent years
Yeah I think design trends have definitely returned to a flatter design, and something more evergreen!
39:28 what about where the top of the ”I” is pointed don’t you have anything for that?
lol, the regal lion from 1998-2002 for the Kings is also wearing sunglasses
Haha I don't know how i didn't see it before! Very holywood!
I love the NHL! And I’m glad that the Colorado Avalanche have a home in Denver! But for other Colorado cities! I can’t help but wonder! If Boulder, Colorado had an NHL Team! What their team name would be! Same with if Colorado Springs had a team for the NHL! As for places in Canada! If Saskatchewan had an NHL Team! What there team name would be or if Langley, British Columbia or Victoria British Columbia’s team names would be if they had a team for the NHL. I also would love to know! If Connor McDavid’s birth Home if Richmond Hill, Ontario had a team for the NHL what their team name would be.
I love the 1932 Red Wings logo
Yeah that fatter wheel is pretty cool!
The new Winnipeg Jets had to get permission from the Maple Leafs to have the maple leaf in their logo.
Oh interesting! That makes sense, though!
I never knew the Canucks logo is supposed to resemble a skate or the Buffalo in the sabres logo has a red eye. Nicely done video.
Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
You should've had the Barons and Seals as part of the Dallas Stars hostory.
I talked about them in the video about team names (and locations) since the relocations, dissolution, and reorganization of franchises played a big role in several team names (including dallas)! For the logos, focused on what the team themselves count as primary logos (for the most part)
The P for the Flyers is obviously the same P the Phillies use, with wings added.
Thanks for watching!
The North Stars didn’t drop “North” before the move to Dallas.
That washington capitals logo always grinded my gears..WHY ISNT IT ALL IN CAPS Also, my home town oilers had a few major logo changes, but they never lasted long. People here obviously dont like change, but I always thought our logo was pretty lazy
Haha the all Caps would make so much sense! 😂
10:06 what about the centennial logo?
I actually made a follow up video on that one! You can see it on my channel page!
i'll watch!@@JustinLearnsThings
I would have gone my whole life not knowing the wild logo looked like an animal, if i never saw this video.
Haha I love that logo! Glad I could help you see it!
You're missing the original Winnipeg Jets logo, which is a player a flying jet and Winnipeg Jets hockey club on it inside a circle.
Minnesota Wild has such a cool logo
Agreed! It’s an awesome logo!!
You forgot about the hockey stick and the storm warning flag logo for the canes
Yeah that’s a great secondary logo! Wish I included more secondaries but the video was getting really logo so I tried to keep the focus on the primary logos!
Man, that Philly logo is just so iconic... as is Boston's logo... and I LOVE the Whaler's logo. Carolina's is horrible... and can't believe you like the Minnesota WIld... it's just too much like a photo... not really iconic...
Whalers is definitely top tier! Yeah Minnesota wild logo is just super unique and I think is pretty fitting for extra large canvas that is a hockey sweater! I doubt I’d like it as much outside of hockey! Like if an NBA team had it, it wouldn’t really hit as well for me!
@@JustinLearnsThings It's unique... but It just doesn't feel... iconic or that it will age well. Reminds me more of a coat of arms than an iconic logo. And it feels like they're trying to put it everywhere... and while it may look nice on a hockey sweater from up close or blown up... it fails when you're watching a screen and looking at the logo from the stands or watching on a phone like many do these days. There are interesting ELEMENTS of the logo.... and it's cute how the river trees and sun become the bear... but the NorthStars was a far more iconic logo. Interesting piece of art that could form a crest or coat of arms maybe.... but closer to a Bob Ross painting than a logo.
Actually in heraldry, right and left are described from the pov of someone holding the shield. So technically your description of LA’s logo was backwards … but hey ….
Haha fair enough!
6:47 Is it also because green wasn't the natural fit color for the logo? Leaves are green when they are in tree, who ever heard of blue leaves?
I have an original six hat with the yellow logo.
Nice! I’ve had a few people send pictures my way on Instagram! Definitely interesting to see, still want to know more about the history of that one!
I'm not sure whats up with it but with all the attention around the Wayne Gretzky rookie card lately becuase the case of cards that sold for millions, I noticed on that card the oilers logo, the text is orange instead of the typical blue
Oh interesting! I wonder if that’s a special one used by the card manufacturer or something!
@@JustinLearnsThings Sorry, to be clear, it's on Gretz's sweater, so they seemingly must have used at some point
Is Philidelphia Flyers a Black team or an Orange team?
Orange tends to be their primary color! I’ve thought about doing a video just about colors!
One thing I'm curious about the NHL goalies is that u know how there's two or three goalies in a team right? If one of the goalies is in front of the net for the game, where's the other one or two goalies? Y would they have more than one goalie?
Opps, i forgot to mention one more relocated team. Winnipeg to Arizona (1972-1996) for people in Winnipeg who are not fans of the recent Winnipeg Jets (2011-present) would watch each season of the Arizona Coyotes on TV. Also, when Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, why did they named it Winnipeg Jets again? Couldn't they think of other objects, animals, or nationality so they don't have to name it Winnipeg Jets again?
Note for the Islanders logo, the "dot" on the I identifies the exact place on the Island where the arena is located! ✌️
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
