    • Raw players get drafted much higher all the time, even before Giannis. Westbrook was drafted 4th and he wasn’t even a starter in college, he was drafted because of his ceiling due to his athleticism. Imo the scouts and executives do deserve a bit of an L for not being able to see the crazy ceiling in Giannis and allowing him to drop out of the lottery. Drafting a multiple time MVP outside of the lottery is insane. I’m not gonna act like I know more about basketball than scouts but it I don’t make a living off of identifying basketball talent. If I get paid a living to do that I better be able to identify a player like Giannis’s ceiling. He should have been at least in the top 10, that draft class was pretty weak

Visit their house, attend their practice, talk with parents, talk with coaches. Try to understand the young prospects mentality is far more important than to be able understand their basketball game/skill.

    • picking draft players is a little bit like predicting the future. it is not easy to see how a guy will develop in a few years in the NBA - some players might have personal problems or injuries that hinder their development. some players might not be as hungry and willing to put in the work to excel like other players do. it is certainly not easy to pick the best possible draft pick. these teams have capable experts and sometimes do not get it right, so it is easy to say they got it wrong in hindsight, but put yourselves into their shoes each year and predict the best players, i am sure you will make a few big misjudgements as well.
