Russia’s Low-Cost Explosive Drones: Lancet, Shahed and More Explained | WSJ

2024 ж. 15 Мам.
347 605 Рет қаралды

At the start of its invasion of Ukraine, the Russian military lagged behind Kyiv in its use of low-cost explosive drones. But by mid 2023, Russian UAVs were targeting Ukrainian forces, copying some of Kyiv’s most successful tactics. In response to Ukraine’s counteroffensive, Russia has been increasingly producing Lancet drones, which explode when they hit targets from armored vehicles to groups of infantry.
WSJ explains how Moscow is building up its arsenal of low-cost explosive drones.

    • There is no point in putting a cluster charge in a Lancet or Geranium, a cluster charge works on infantry, and these drones destroy combat vehicles (Lancet) (3-5 kg of explosives in a cumulative charge). Geranium (50kg of trinitrotoluene) destroys Buildings, oil storage facilities, etc. (a fairly large object) explosives are needed there, not striking elements. Russia will not pollute its territory with depleted uranium, because what used to be Russian land, and then went to Ukraine, will return back to Russia, as it has been for centuries, but this does not mean that such a blow will not be inflicted on NATO lands, we Russians do not feel sorry for anyone there, we have age-old enemies there

    • wiki "Orlan-10" uses a technological bet on the use of civilian imported components, which have sharply fallen in price in recent years. In addition to their low price, they are also not regulated by legislation on the circulation of military technologies such as ITAR[en]. All electronics and engines of the Orlan-10 are imported components, but the UAV designers have made a “detachment from suppliers,” that is, no imported part is critical and can be replaced with an analogue. For this reason, the study of downed Orlan-10s each time demonstrates new configurations of microcircuits, optics and even engines. The domestic software in Orlan-10 is quite complex, taking into account the large number of options for equipping the Orlan-10 with various equipment, as well as a huge number of options for imported components. Moreover, for many components, such as the engine, a diagnostic mode of serviceability is supported directly in flight using special sensors. In addition, the drone software supports a rather complex orthomosaic mode, stitched together from individual images. [13] The Orlan-10 composite wings are also made in Russia and are made of carbon fiber, which provides them with radio transparency. This stealth technology is “know-how”, since it is usually difficult to use composite wings on UAVs due to the problem of icing and the complexity of installing wing anti-icing protection. For low-flying UAVs, this problem is critical, so analogues of the Orlan-10 are quite rare in the world. The fact is that when precipitation gets on the wings of a UAV at subzero temperatures, they instantly freeze, lose lift, and stall the UAV. Heating even metal wings is not effective enough in the event of direct precipitation; in addition, by heating the wings, the UAV unmasks itself in the infrared range. Orlan-10 does not use a heated metal wing, but a special polymer film on composite radio-transparent wings. In case of icing, the film separates from the wing along with the ice crust.[36] Swedish police said they are aware of a link between the increased theft of speed cameras on roads (more than 100 cases in the period July-September 2022) and the use of the same type of cameras in Orlan-10 The Orlan-10 UAV has extensive capabilities of the APS 2.2 autopilot developed by TsTBA GUAP[12][13]: Fully autonomous flight mode without an operator in “radio silence” mode is supported. For an autonomous route, up to 100 points are indicated, at which the altitude and the sign of its flight are specified: altitude passage or loitering If necessary, the drone's autonomous mode can be programmed directly in the air via a radio channel. It is possible to specify the “Home” point for automatic return of the drone in the event of a loss of radio communication or absence/noise of GLONASS/GPS signals (return occurs using a compass and gyroscopes) payload on and off points camera frame overlap ratio. for orientation without GPS or in electronic warfare conditions that suppress GPS/GLONASS signals, orientation is used to recognize landmarks from photographs and compare them with a raster image of the terrain with reference to several points or an electronic map in the drone’s memory The drone software supports integration with OziExplorer[de], which allows drone images to be overlaid on OpenStreetMap, GoogleMap maps, as well as to compare drone footage with Google Satellite satellite images General platform features: GPS receiver TRE-G3T geodetic class with an accuracy of determining coordinates up to 1 cm (versus 6-7 meters of household GPS receivers). Real Time Kinematic technology is used to clarify coordinates crypto-protected command-telemetry channel with frequency converter, crypto-protected channel for transmitting photo (video) information, two-stage noise-resistant coding on both types of channels, from one control center, simultaneous control of up to 4 UAVs is provided, any UAV can work as a channel repeater for others its small size and the use of radio-transparent composite materials make the UAV unobtrusive to air defense radars[14]. Concern Avtomatika and the Vector Research Institute, which specialize in detecting drones, estimate the EPR of the Orlan-10 to be about 0.2-0.5 m²[15]. The UAV has a radio transmitter with a range of 120 km, and the UAV also has a GSM modem with the ability to insert local SIM cards, which allows the UAV to connect to 3G/4G cellular networks for communication via an encrypted channel with an operator via the Internet at any distance[16]. The UAV has an electric generator connected to the engine, this allows you to avoid wasting the weight of the payload on batteries for equipment
