@@Jay-eq9gb Yes, they're taking our money and Bill of Rights and putting it their pockets. The problem isn't that celebrities want to run for office and ordinary people would like to give them a chance - Reagan was a pretty good President, especially in comparison to his predecessor, Jimmy Carter - it's that the professional politicians have forgotten who they're supposed to be working for, We the People, not We the Politicians or We the Plutocrats.
Moral of the story: go the Al Franken route. Take several years to learn about politics and government, THEN run for office. Not for President mind you, start with something small, like state senate. Get the experience before you jump in the deep end and realize that you can't swim.
But that takes actual years of work! Can you imagine!? These only want the spotlight that comes with it.

Unless they have served in government a long time and have a clue on what the work entails.
I hate it when people say thy like a candidate because "he's not a politician". Firstly, you are a politician from the day you announce you are running for office. And to be a good politician, you've got to know how to get things done. If you had a toothache, would you go to some you liked because "he isn't a dentist"?
Also, to the extent that politicians are corrupt or separated from the people, perhaps that's a problem is the system, not the individuals. Any new individual will be infected by the same system. What you need isn't a saviour, it's significant reform to the system, at the very least. Money out of politics, and politics out of the voting system.
Well it turned out bad for the Republicans they lost the house the senate and the WH under the orange man with a 8th grade education

This world is completely upside-down. "Comedians" like Bill (and many others) obviously do more politics than the politicians do. If a top brain surgeon goes playing golf in which he is an average, that's minor; he can do it for fun and relax from a stressful job; that's understandable, nothing wrong with that. And if he by chance is over an average, that's a bonus. He fails to address the fact that most politicians are pieces of shit who aren't even interested in governing
Bill was talking about the top people in the top jobs. That was pretty clear to me. He wasn't talking about municipal politicians. Knowing how to get elected is just one skill of many that the top people have to have. It isn't the ONLY skill by any stretch.
@@bakedalaska4363 yeah they also need to know how to fleece the citizens!
@@bakedalaska4363 I would hazard that most Municipal politicians have the job because no one else wanted to do it. and their political organization is likely restricted to family and friends. The founding fathers weren’t cynical enough to foresee this. And there’s no way to include something like this now because more than half the House knows they would fail such an exam.
Because democracy means that anyone can be in charge if the majority supports them, what you are suggesting is anti-democracy. What I would suggest is more direct ballot initiatives, on things such as M4A, minimum wage as a living wage, universal housing and many others. That way we get what we want as a people.
If you can't pass a high school level civics exam, you should not be allowed in office.
No matter how well you try to design that kind of system, eventually it's going to be overseen by someone you disagree vehemently with. Ironic that some politicians try to be celebrities instead of good public servants.
Audience: do you have to clap after every comment?
After a year of pandemic they're just glad to find they still have hands.
What about Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger? Both were actors before becoming politicians. I'm not from the USA but from what I understand they didn't perform terribly at their respective offices. People who get elected to these positions are always surrounded by many different experts regardless of whether or not they are professional politicians and I think that to perform well in politics you basically need common sense, hard working ethics and a true desire to help people.
They don't count, according to Bill, because they are on the 'wrong' side. Willful blindness.
Actually both where horrible.
Reagan set the country on the path of failure it’s currently on. And Arnold was just ok..
Schwarzenegger was also in the military and heavily involved in politics since the 80s. He didn't just wake up one day and decide to run for office.
When I was young I paid a lot of attention to celebrities for their music, acting, fashion etc. But I do not understand why or how it has come about that so many people listen to actors, singers, models etc., about health, politics or anything else they're not trained or experienced in. It's often enough that people trained and experienced in those things are wrong, or mess up, without adding the completely clueless. Listening to or electing celebrities for issues they've nothing but an opinion on, actually undermines the intelligence and progression of a society.
It would be alright, alright, alright by me if Matthew removed either the sitting Texas governor or the TX Lieutenant Governor.
"Sitting" governor
I dont feel he could do much worse. Those two actively promote ignorance.
@@lab4389 what did Perry do before becoming governor? And Abbott?
Did that bit without mentioning Schwartzenegger once.
I found that quite odd also since Maher is a Californian, and considering I am not a Republican, Schwartzenegger didn't do too bad.
He also didn't mention Reagan, who's really the guy that started this all. Including laying the groundwork for Trump.
@@82Jaster in Reagan's defence, he was politically active before he became President - and even Governor. His was certainly not as much of an outlier as Trump's.
That's okay, he mentioned Arnold Schwarzenegger and Reagan another time when he was dissing Republicans for too often nominating/supporting celebs for public office :)
Exactly
Thank you Bill!
this is like the cool kid in high school who runs for school president by saying they're gonna get rid of the shitty classes and put vending machines in every room but doesn't know what to do when they do win the popularity vote

It is frightening the people that end up in office. Celebrities need to stay in their lane.
Making an excellent point!!
Matthew Mcconaughey could actually run Texas better than Greg Abbott. The bar is not high.
Exactly. The bar is not at all high and that's not because of celebrities who want to enter the field. It's because the so-called professionals are terrible at their jobs.
You're beautiful. Your partner is lucky asf !
If we manage to get a non-GOP governor in Texas, then he's going to have to be better than "ok". Whoever it is will have to be near perfect or it will backfire and you'll get 40 more years of GOP domination in Texas.
But that would still be terrible
“Putin’s not on a green screen, and he doesn’t give a shit about your million dollar smile.” Way to put the moral in the middle of the story. 🤓
one of the most truthful, best segments yet!!!
This is actually pretty terrible. He is saying that what we need is career politicians. If we have systemic problems now, why wouldn’t we want an outsider. The career politicians are the system. I have very little faith that someone will hit their stride and really start putting in work after 30 years.
Love it keep it real BILL.
the problem is we don't respect government or governing.
They haven't earned our respect.
I think the problem is that Government forgets that it is employed by and paid for by its citizens; therefore, it is supposed to be working FOR us...not the other way around.
Do the people doing the governing respect us?
@@carladehaas7866 I think it's the people who've forgotten.
Governments are mostly democratically elected dictators
To be fair, Bill, I am from Texas, and I think Mathew could an improvement over our current governor.
That isn't saying much.
A cactus with a ten gallon hat would be an improvement over Greg Abbott.
About 2 years ago Bill did a closing segment about how Oprah needed to run for President. Much more flip flopping than in the past, Mr. Maher.
I thought the same when I first heard this
Is the trick question because you are a celebrity hahaha
Yes celebrities should stick to what they know
@@JR3714 yeah, Reagan was the definition of charismatic stupidly and puppetry. For some reason, the GOP adores him lol.
@@David-sw2rj lol. Dude, you have. Peiden in chief.
...which is, generally, reading from scripts. That preparation is worthless, absolutely worthless, in real life and in dealing with big issues. But at the same time, celebrities know that they, with their acting skills and great hair, can con stupid people.

And a terrible politican btw Nancy Regan ran the country.
Right and his theory of trickle down economics doesn't work = 40 years of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
For all the complaining about "left wing Hollywood" it's the right wing that keeps electing celebrities to office. Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonny Bono, Donald Trump... all Republicans.
@@801GMC Reagan wasn't perfect but it was Clinton and Bush and Obama that really decimated the proud average American and sold us out to China. Reagan made it easier for everyone to compete, the other were corporatists not capitalists, there's a difference.
Basically career politicians are the best presidents..
Boy Bill is eating his words right now!!
This is what happens when we decide to put personality instead of character and qualifications in politics: a fine big mess.
Started going downhill once TV was invented. Think of how much time Trump spent in the makeup dept every day putting on that character.
It seems like when Bush was elected was the first time I heard the phrase "I dont know anything about his Politics but Ill vote for him just because hes a Christian." I heard that around 99-2000. And even little me was saying "We are totally fucked"
“A space alien attack couldn’t unite this country. The aliens would say take us to your leader, and 70% of Republicans would drive them to Mar-A-Lago.” Nailed it.
And the moment they watch Trump speak, they would start disintegrating everyone like in Mars Attacks.
Sadly, I think we all knew where that joke was going before he even finished setting it up.
Sadly true.
We'd gladly exchange all of Earth's liberals for them.

What bill is forgetting is that those celebrities have as much experience as anyone else starting out in politics. NONE.
You know we're gonna end up with the whole slew of Kardashians running soon enough. And if our track record tells us anything, at least a few will get in.
You crack me up man. Even the rare times I disagree with you I still laugh. Keep it up. Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing.
Do you think you're actually talking to Bill Maher?
Dude YOU'RE the one who suggested Oprah to run for president!
Why does Maher keep calling this administration adults? They were always a trainwreck ready to happen and it happened real quick. No wasting time. Awesome. We are so impressed. Hearing that they are real adults is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me
