Take a spin in a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 with Keith Martin at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, AZ and hear just what's so special about this 450 horsepower muscle car. Is it all about the 454 cubic inch V8 or is there more to this tire squealing Chevy? Watch as Keith and Josh Nasar have a frank conversation with the seller before finding out what it's worth!

  • A lot of lay people incorrectly assume that anyone could walk into a dealership and buy any of the most powerful versions of the "muscle cars". In the case of the LS6 Chevelles, it is important to note that out of the 633,945 Chevelles built in 1970, that only 4,475 were LS6 cars, which is far less than 1% of all Chevelles. So unless your dealer had 150 or more Chevelles sitting in inventory, you wouldn't likely even SEE an LS6 Chevelle, much less have an opportunity to compete against other buyers for it. This misunderstanding has been propagated over the years, by the fact that it's an extremely easy car to fake. Because there are so many fake LS6 cars, lay people tend not to realize how rare they really are. That rarity is compounded by the fact that many of them were sold new to racers who hacked them up to race them, and of course because of all of the ones that got totalled on the street over the last 54 years. The actual rarity of these cars, is reflected in their current valuations. A real LS6 Chevelle is worth more than many late-model Ferraris. It has never been typical for the owners of the LS6 cars to be blue collar workers, so it is incorrect to identify the LS6 as a typical blue collar car, any more than one would identify a late-model Ferrari as a typical blue collar car.

    • Your right, they were not a dealership stock SS. If stocked, they were the 396-350hp versions. Local Buffalo NY dealership had a forest green LS-6 for sale in 1973, I think they wanted in the $5,000 range. I looked at it and it had a clear gas filter up top online. Didn't have the cash back then to buy it, college student.

    • I love that you put math to this common misconception of abundance. Too many people throw around the term "LS6", true or not. Growing up reading the magazines, the top tier muscle cars were the glorified ones but were far less abundant than the commonly sold second tier. In today's terms, far more camaro SS's are sold than ZL1's.

    • Of course there were some exceptions. In depew NY, suburb of Buffalo, they had a 70 super bee, orange with black, 440 six pack and four speed in stock at delacy Doge back then. Sat there for awhile, probably because of insurance costs back then.

    • @garysarnowski3113 That's not QUITE the same thing- there were nearly 10,000 six-barrel 440s built in 1970.

    • @@Gurn_Blanston Well, this was a small local dealership and to have something like that, parked on the lawn in front of the dealership was something to see back then. Pro Team Corvette in Ohio has a 69 Corvette L-88 with a turbo hydramatic for sale, restored back to original from being a race car.
