Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11--19, the story of Jacob's dream.
The original lyrics to the hymn are as follows:
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee,
Chorus: Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee,
Chorus
There let the way appear steps unto heav'n;
All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee,
Chorus
Then with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee,
Chorus
Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee,
A sixth verse was later added to the hymn by Edward H. Bickersteth, Jr. as follows:
There in my Father's home, safe and at rest,
There in my Savior's love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.
Chorus
"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is also associated with the sinking of the RMS Titanic, as some survivors later reported that the ship's string ensemble played the hymn as the vessel sank.

112 years ago, on the early hours of April 15th, 1912, as the RMS Titanic sank into the icy waters of the North Atlantic, the brave musicians aboard played this as their last song. Sadly, all of them would be among the 1,500 souls lost in the sinking.
They played right up to the last minutes before Titanic broke apart and disappeared beneath the North Atlantic Ocean, taking more then 1500 souls with her. The musicians stayed right to the end.
To all those who lost their lives at sea
They knew God was watching over them.
When most men were still honorable. Not timid and selfish
They would have been so happy hearing this from their fellow musicians to heaven.

What an incredible audience for a symphony, glad to see the art isn’t dying
Sensibility is still alive. To God be the Glory.
Andre Rieu’s audiences are always sold out. But a lot of his music isn’t not true symphony music. It’s called music hall classical, so sort of popular classical short pieces
El arte nunca muere amigo
My small midwestern state school has a symphony orchestra… and it’s almost always full… for the 4 times they perform each semester. So no… there are still people that appreciate classical heritage. Same goes for any culture - there will always be those that will try to preserve their own cultural heritage. It’s the least we can do

This hymn was played during the funeral of a close friend of mine, now on tuesday, January 14th. He died of cancer. He was diagnozed in 2017, and he fought the battle until the very end. He didn't die because he had given up, his body just couldn't take it. He was brave as a lion, and believed in life and in his faith. He lost no battle. In fact, he won. He was always peaceful about it. He knew what he was heading. He died, 23 years old. Rest in peace, my friend. We shall meet again.
Rest in peace .. God also needs brave souls to be around HIM
Even though I have no connection with you or the dear friend you recently lost, this song touches ones soul thinking of how he fought the good fight but at that certain moment, you know it is out of your hands and time to let it go. God Bless you Both.

I believe 100% that it was God who provided those life boats and life jackets for those people who were on the Titanic. God was the one who protected them. What kind of God would let 1500 people perish on the Atlantic...
@@litamtondy the one that loves you so much that he gave his one and only Son to save you
@@augustinguilhot2710 So one son better than 1500 people? What a selfish God.
Litam tondy, In the beginning God made man and everything else. He then proclaimed it all good. Then man sinned and became bad. Ever since man paid the price for his disobedience. Do you blame you parents for your mistakes and the resulting consequences?
@@dereckgregan5491 Then God isn't all-mighty.
Gentlemen, it's been a privilege playing with you tonight.
We will never forget those that passed that night. This song 🎵
“And so they lived happily together for 300 years, in the land of Tir na nOg, the land of eternal youth and beauty”
"Buenas noches mamá"
Ugh I’m gonna start bawling!
I've read somewhere that the mom told this story to the kids because apparently, the land of Tir na Nog can only be entered through water.
That bit always tears me up. I always think of my own daughter.
@@T.hanks1997 I believe that’s Tir Fo Thuinn. “The land under the wave”
I'm glad they cut to the audience every once in a while to confirm that I wasn't the only one crying.

A fine Protestant Hymn written by English Poet Sarah Fuller Adams. And what a superb rendition lead by Andre Rieu

Un honor
I can’t believe Andre played this gospel hymn. The Lord put it in there. Thank you
Hi there? What’s new with you over there?
I can never stop saying this. Music is a form of communication that everyone understands. From the melodies, to the chord progressions, music is one of the best gift that God has ever given us. And to the musicians of the Titanic, they were true hero’s for their contribution to dedicating their last moment to help calm and give peace to the passengers of the Titanic.
Love this but with so much sadness. My mum slipped away to this, her beloved Andre, with her closest family by her side. I’ve taken months to push myself to listen to this. It was the first Mother’s Day without my beautiful mum 2 days ago and 9 months yesterday since our last moments together. I hope my mum slept away the way she hoped, peacefully with her beloved Andre’s orchestra xx
I dedicate this music to my twin sons who died . God I still believe in You.
I'm sorry, that God gives you strength.
@@terrarian6234 Thank you Maria , May the Almighty Grace Always Bless You.
Im sorry for your loss🙏 may he rest in peace
I'm sorry for your loss. Your faith in God is beautiful xx
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your two children. May music give you and your family some small relief and help along the way XX
"And so they lived happily together for 300 years, in the land of Tír na nÓg, the land of eternal youth and beauty."
That scene and the elderly couple really got to me.
@@yesyummy5624 The elderly couple is based on a real couple, the owners of Macy's, Isidor Straus, 67, and his wife Ida Straus, 63.He refused to get on a boat until all the women and children had seats first, and she refused to get on a lifeboat with out him, "We have lived a wonderful life together for 40 years and have six beautiful children together, if you won't get on the life boat, I won't either."
@@noratheyandere6448 oh god I'm not crying you are
That has to be one of the saddest scenes in movie history

It's impossible not to be moved by Hallelujah. It is a heavenly gift.
Everytime I listen to this I shed a tear 😢... It's been a pleasure playing with you gentlemen
And God shall wipe away all the tears from they eyes, and there shall be no more death; neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former world has passed away

If this doesn't move you , I feel sorry for you !
My cousin was lost at sea when his schooner capsized off the coast of Maine. We played this at his service. This happened some years ago, however I still leave the room when this part of Titanic comes on.
We lose a love one do we ever say goodbye my grandpa die 10 years ago not a day go by I see

Amsterdam, Amsterdam turn your heart to Him. His glory used to dwell so strongly in you. Turn back again and be saved, Amsterdam and the beautiful nation of Netherland. Amen
Yes, I think your land will always be with God, may God bless Amsterdam and the Nation!
IVE,, BEEN THERE,, LV IT,,,,
Doesn't that go for the whole world Jessie??.....AMEN!!
Doctor Octobrist So certain huh??Well i hope you are wrong,if you are right too,then too bad.
Doctor Octobrist isn't it better to believe and live a righteous life and to find out that God does not exist then to not believe then to find out that He does and to be eternally condemned? I truly believe that God exist and He came in the flesh to show us the way. You might again ask why Jesus, it's because the rest of the world seek "god" and end up with the devil but Jesus came seeking for us so we won't make that mistake. Amen and God loves you very much.
We are farther from God than ever, yet he is as close as ever.
After a few days not being close to God, i feel empty. This fills me up so good
We are all aboard a sinking Titanic, in need of assurance that our God is near. Beautifully presented.
Definitely 🙂
