  • Gaethje was known to be the hardest puncher in the division. Oliveira ate his punches clean, got right back up and continued pressuring forward. Gaethje was known to have a good chin. Oliveira took him down clean. It wasn't just one lucky punch either, it was a constant barrage of all kinds of strikes and grapples from Oliveira which landed. When Gaethje went down, it genuinely looked like Oliveira could do absolutely anything to him and just settled for a RNC. There wasn't even a contest on the ground. That is what everyone saw and that's why Gaethje is not in the conversation at all. Maybe he should be, but after those 4 minutes, no one is convinced or cares about that conversation. This is like saying that Chandler and Ferguson should have a rematch because that was a lucky kick, and quite honestly that's far more convincing than saying that Oliveira and Gaethje should happen again. Remember Oliveira's track record before this as well. Poirier was dominated. Chandler was knocked down almost in the same way as Gaethje, something which Gaethje himself couldn't do against Chandler. Nobody is making the mistake of doubting Oliveira after this, and the only fighting style which hasn't been tested against him in recent times is that of Islam Makhachaev.

    • To be fair he wasn't dominating Porier until he illegally hooked the glove which led him to get the mount. Dustin was piecing him up on the feet and avoiding going to the ground with him. Olivera basically grabbed him by the glove and forced him to grapple. Still like Charles but lets calm down a bit. The guy's got a lot of heart but anyone in the top 5 can get a W over eachother in that particular division. Not taking nothing away from Charles, just a killer division.

  • Khabib already had a plan with his late father. Go out there make it 30-0 and get out. But when his father died, I don’t know how serious his conversation with his mother when she ask Khabib to stop fighting and he promise it will be the last. His father’s plan was also to make Islam Makhachev a champion right after Khabib retired. Instead of fulfilling his 30-0 for himself, he took the role of his father for the next generation

They don't look so menacing right now because they were soundly beaten, but before the fights, they were all "uncrowned champions". Charles Oliveira got screwed over in that scale thing, is well know now, specially because the UFC who is used to throw guys under the bus, is behind him now. And Islam wants to call the shots, fight for the title, fight in Abu Dhabi, and all his unbearable fans are on the same wagon. Islam best win is a short notice Dan Hooker. @phise1@phise12 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah. Justin avoids the ground game like the plague. Regardless of who he fights. It's too frustrating bc he knocks everyone down but never capitalizes. • Funny Chael goes there considering he got on top of Silva and got 🔺️ choked the eff out lol. And Silva isn't even a top tier Bjj artist. We'll see how LETHAL Oliveira truly is when Islam gets on top of him (a mistake in my book). There's a reason Usman, Colby, and Woodley avoided the ground with Maia and Burns. The whole wrestling is superior to bjj is nonsense. At the highest level this does not apply. Normally, wrestling neutralizes striking, bjj neutralizes wrestling, and striking neutralizes bjj. A wrestling base with bjj is extremely lethal (essential combat sambo) but a bjj base with decent wrestling is also dangerous (combat bjj). This is gonna be a combat sambo vs combat bjj display matchup (atleast people think so. Charles might just have some stellar TD defense and keep it standing who knows). The issue is, Charles STRIKING and Muay Thai is at its highest level as well. He has the best grappling AND the best striking in the division. No doubt, Islam's wrestling is way better, but does superior wrestling really beat superior striking and bjj. I don't know. I don't think so.

Charles had Justin hurt and got his respect in the first exchange, he had already taken plenty of damage when he fell as well, while Charles didn’t suffer as much cumulative damage as he fell from the first punch Justin landed, iirc, and an intercepting uppercut. Not to say explosive damage doesn’t trump cumulative damage, but the explosion has to be strong enough while cumulative damage wears the body down more. Combining both is deadly. - Max hollaway - cumulative damage Conor Mcgregor - explosive damage Dustin Porier - both This^ might be some cheap MMA math, but it’s one way of looking at it.

  • Charles striking is underrated, but there's a huge difference; When Charles gets stunned he goes to the canvas to recover and Gaethje, and most nobody else is willing to follow him. When Gaethje gets stunned, Charles has no problem going to the ground with him. Gaethje got submitted because he was completely helpless on the ground against Oliveira. Oliveira threw submission attempts at him faster than he could defend. He goes for the RNC but it's defended so then he switched to arm bar, triangle, and back to RNC within 10 seconds and Gaethje is still defending the arm bar. The reason Gaethje isn't getting a second shot is because he came in sloppy. Every punch he threw was some ridiculous unbalanced haymaker. He thought he could just KO Charles. Sure the striking created the opportunity, but his BJJ is what sealed it. Moreover, don't think Charles won't do stand up BJJ if he can't get you down or tempt you into his guard. From what I saw I suspect Charles would reverse any bottom position within 20 seconds.

  • Oliveira actually seems to go on his butt to recover for a moment if he gets hit hard, same than for example Werdum was doing. His BJJ skills kept Gaethje from taking advantage of the top position. Gaethje got caught, went to floor and he didn't have the same advantage and got submited. In this way BJJ still is very effective in MMA I would say. Even if the other guy goes to ground, good BJJ guy can clinch and survive for the next round more likely with lesser damage. Mr. Sonnen is right that submissions from the back are little more rare nowadays, but being good BJJ player can do reverses, create transitions take the back or to get up. Of course Demian Maia as prime example. Gathje going to ground after Oliveira would have been a risk, since he can create opportinties to attack the neck and the back with decent likelihood. So cannot say Gathje did totally wrong when backing out of the guard.

  • It’s time we face the cold hard truth. Justin is not good on the ground. Despite what he’s done in his past, for the past two years, Justin has looked lost on the ground. Against Khabib, Justin looked lost. Against Charles, Justin was put away in 30 seconds. Justin is not a top-tier athlete at 155 pounds on the ground. That is a fact. There is no evidence in the last 2, 3, 100 years that Justin is an elite wrestler in the UFC. He had a lot of success in college, and he was a great wrestler. But in the UFC where is the evidence. There has been plenty of fights where Justin could have wrestled, but he did it. That tells me that he can’t. I don’t know if this is some tragic flaw by Justin, saying that he won’t wrestle because he wants to entertain. I don’t know what it is, but you cannot hop around the fact any longer. Justin looks lost on the ground. Against Khabib he got put away in less than a minute on the ground. Against Charles he got put away in less than a minute on the ground. It’s like he gives up, it’s like he quits once he gets taken down or Charles got on top of him. We can’t keep acting like Justin is some elite wrestler with good ground game when he has yet to show it in the UFC. We can’t keep acting like there’s some untapped potential that Justin keeps refusing to show, we need to accept the fact, we need to accept the truth. Justin‘s ground game is it what we I think it is.

Every time he fights it gets more exciting the breakdowns get more interesting. It's like chael is saying the great champion evolves to eventually not make his own standard set. I mean it can affect 170 as Kamaru Usman may no longer be interested in any potential macthes (Might be lapping around the division as he doesn't wanna move up). At the same time Chandler might move to 170 and Nathen Diaz and Conor may already fit into 170 as well.. Any thoughts?

  • Justin only wants to brawl. We’ve seen what this looks like in two separate title fights and they were submissions. At the highest level, Justin’s style doesn’t work. We need Islam or Beneil to challenge Oliveira because the 155 belt needs a different look. They are the guys who can match Oliveira’s style. Justin is a great fighter, but his narrow-minded fighting style will only take him so far

  • It's not complicated. The same rules that stripped Charles also grant him the right to fight for the belt at his very next fight. Charles has said for his next fight he accepts to fight the winner of Islam vs Dariush. Now Dana can choose to present a different opponent and that could be Conor or Gaetchje or Chandler, etc. But Charles has some rights as the result of missing weight and getting stripped and no one fights for the title unless he's part of that fight. Maybe it should go to court. Let the lawyers fight for the title😂

    @kuramobay2445@kuramobay24452 жыл бұрын
    • i dont get the point of stripping him then, cause he is automatically fighting a championship fight that if he wins he is champ, if he losses he is not, if they didn't strip him he is fighting for the championship and if he wins he is champ, if he losses he is not. Doesnt seem like a real punishment for making weight.
