I used to run team. My co driver was so afraid of that bridge, he went back into the sleeper until I told him we were off of it. I thought the view was awesome, he got physically ill just from looking at the pictures I took. We did not last long together.

I've always hated going over bridges and as a passenger. What happened yesterday on the Francis Scott Key bridge has always been one of my biggest fears going over bridges. Not just collapsing, but collapsing into the water. I've always hated it.
When my folks told me yesterday morning that a bridge collapsed in Maryland I thought it was this one. (By the way, bridges collapsing over water is my biggest (Most reasonable) fear.)

For anyone not from Maryland coming from the bridge collapse. This is the bay bridge, not the key bridge that fell. This bridge is 4 times the size of the one that fell. Think of this one as being similar to the golden gate bridge.
It is similiar to key bridge to me just longer. I have driven on both bridges. They both have low guardrails. Last time i drove on key bridge it was snow on it

The Chesapeake Bay is a lot more ferocious than the Patapsco River. Actually not, the bridge is a bit taller than the Scott Key but it is more so a vital link; a collapse there would have been catastrophic.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is almost 3 times longer than the Golden Gate Bridge.

The toughest part crossing this bridge is when the high tide is up that means that the water level is like right at the level of the road in some areas of the bridge and the wind is up you can actually feel the bridge sway badly I hate that bridge

I myself have driven across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge hundreds of times in a truck where you can only drive in the right lane next to concrete barrier looking over the edge, and I can understand the fears that some people can have.
Having that barricade below your field of view can really unnerve you.

As someone who's family goes over this bridge almost everyday, it's interesting to hear what other people have to say on it. I for one find it peaceful to cross, although it's quite common for heavy traffic to take place and to be stuck on the bridge for 20 minutes at a time, which gives you enough time to look out on the water at the nearby ships.

I drove over this thing for the first time about a month ago, late at night; let's just say that I was tense the whole drive, and was as close to the steering wheel as those grandmas in the movies. It did not help that when I tried looking to my left, I saw that the other driving side of the bridge was feet apart, each side separated from the other by water! I hope I never have to drive over it again!

I have traveled on that bridge.The fact that at some point you only see water and large ships in the distance is scary.There is no place to pullover so you have your mind together before you cross or you may have a panic attack.

Was stationed at Pax River and have driven across this bridge can't even remember how many times. It is challenging in bad weather or high winds, but not bad in normal conditions. Got stuck on the bridge one day due to an accident and it turned into a block party with people getting out of their cars. Have also flown over this bridge a few times but never have been under it in a boat. Never thought there is a market for driving people over it, but apparently there is. What a great idea this guy had. FLY NAVY!!!

I have driven across this one a few times while traveling the east coast, it was long and I remember there was an underground tunnel that we drove through (I'm prob thinking of another bridge) but I DO remember it being a very long tunnel bridge (the tunnels go underground I believe) and I still enjoy it whenever I go that way!

I have a fear of certain high bridges. The old one in Charleston SC was terrifying. The bay bridge is not that bad. I’m more afraid of mountain roads that come close to the edge and you can see down a steep cliff. I was going down a mountain interstate once and my brakes began to give out! Had to drive all the way down in low gear…truck drivers blew their horns angrily.

I used to commute everyday from the Eastern Shore to DC for work. Not a big deal to cross this bridge. I did go over it once in a blizzard and followed a cop all the way over. The snow was whipping up over the sides of the bridge..it was incredible! It looked like a snow tunnel. I found out later that the authorities closed the bridge that night 10 minutes after I crossed it.

I was driving across that bridge taking my daughter back to college when she suddenly freaked out. Yelling, swatting, opening the windows, screaming for me to stop the car, she scared me so bad I swerved into another lane.. all because of a wasp in the car. I told her that getting stung is preferable to driving off a bridge at 200 ft above the Chesapeake Bay! I dont think she'd thought that one through.. 🐝 🤪 Eventually she graduated.. 👩🎓

I’ve ridden motorcycles back and forth across that bridge in rain and everything else. It still wasn’t as bad as a bridge I rode across in Canada. I prayed all the way across that one.
As a cross country trucker I've been over that bridge many times no it ain't scary but I have also been across the the tunnel bridge now at night time or during bad weather or both that is to me the scariest us highway bridge in the USA expecially when it was a two lane only bridge.

That old bridge you showed was the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and it did collapse back then It has since been rebuilt with a newer one alongside. Alot of people don't want to cross over the Astoria Bridge in Oregon either. It's been in several movies and if you haven't seen it, it's pretty tall.
I think the Actual Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel from Cape charles to Virginia Beach(over 17 miles long and mostly 30 feet off the water , can be pretty nerve racking.

Yeah i drive this bridge atleast 8 times a month, I love driving over it especially during a big storm.
The first time I remember crossing the old span was in 1955 when I was 5 years old going to Ocean City. I recall getting pretty queasy when we hit the highest part, looking out over the Bay. Didn't barf, but I did feel dizzy. The good old days.
There’s a bridge in Virginia called the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel that goes under water and is much scarier than this bridge. And it’s 23 miles long. :]
When my daughter was young, she had a fear of all bridges and especially this tunnel/bridge. She did conquer her fears because when she worked in Alaska along the pipeline as an environmental tech, that was part of her job.

PERSPECTIVE: he said he drove 19 people on the bridge each charging $25. That's 475 in one day times 5 is 2375. Times 4 is 9500. Times 9500 by 12 and thats 114000 a year. This guy has the capability of making that much in one year simply driving others across a bridge and that bridge is not going anywhere to hurt his business. I think that the first time I cross this bridge was around 1995 or 1996 and it was raining and foggy.
I wonder how these people feel about the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana. That bridge is 24 miles long!

I been on that one many times not a big deal at all feels like the bridge connecting Houston to Crosby Texas. Now the Baytown bridge aka Fred Hartman bridge freaks me the hell out. And the bridge in Louisiana going over that casino boat freaks me out too.

I've driven over the old Florida Sunshine Skyway bridge a few times after the collapse, before the new bridge was built. Can't forget the sickening feeling reaching the top and looking over where the broken span sheered off in the accident with the ship back in 1980.
I drove over that bridge back in the early 90's with a 72 Superbeetle. The wind (IN AN INSTANT) blew me from one lane to the other. That was the most uncomfortable feelings I ever had driving. It is in fact an unpredictable place to cross over.

Well, I did it once and when I was about 7 miles out, looked back through the rear view mirror and it was exactly the same scene as looking through the windshield. No land horizon was visible at all, just open water and the bridge itself. Fortunately, it was a clear day, but remember wondering what it might be like in bad weather or a heavy fog.
I just looked on their web site. It is $18.00! I did it in 1982 while on an east coast vacation trip and remember it being like $17 back then. It saved driving around Chesapeake Bay which would have taken all day.

Crossed this on a GREYHOUND BUS in January 1994 when I was 17 going to Boston. I see that the traffic is still the same. It was bumper to bumper the day I crossed it.
This is the truth! We drove to NY and had no idea what was ahead until we were on it and I started to freak because it looked as though the bridge was going into the water!!! Omg 😱
