Only 101 rooms to go! Restoring the Château first floor - Part 2

2024 ж. 27 Сәу.
51 117 Рет қаралды

This week our many projects are start to come together! On the first floor, we finally see the new en-suite taking shape. In the moat preparations are laid for the waste water evacuation of the chateau en-suites and up on the roof the final section of the disastrous 19th century zinc guttering is removed.

  • It IS so inspiring to see the fundamentals of the chateau restored. And not just that, but how beautiful the process is to watch and gain more insight about. It makes me want to viré out to France start restoring one myself! …… Famous last words, I’m sure. And I’m excited for the essential livable spaces being put together that will no doubt make LIVING WHILE working in the chateau so much more palatable as it won’t just be a worksite but a true HOME. And talk about much deserved. That tub is to die for. But dang. A year for the roof to be fully completed. That is some steady, detailed work. She is waking up slowly, indeed. It’s kind of strange not seeing the mesh in the new bathroom anymore. You get so used to it. How trippy. Syked to see the wallpaper chosen and put up.

I follow the Purnon restoration and other castles as Le château de Chaumont on KZhead. I would like to thanks these foreigners who spend their time, energy and money to save this French patrimony. As done by the Australian government who offers the Australian nationality to the foreign heroes I suggest to the French government to proceed the same for you. Jean 🇫🇷

  • When you read that someone has bought a chateau and started an enourmous and painstaking job of restoring this old lady, your first thought is, hey, they're rich, very rich to venture into this huge thing!!! They'll have an army of workers, craftsmen of all trades to do the work for them! And then we see the two of you, hard at work, getting into the dirt, ripping apart, sanding and painting floors, digging, shovelling, mowing... Youve changed my perception of the "rich"! Its going to take a long time to get this old madame glowing again, but you're both rich in ambition and love for her!

    • Thanks for your message. We find traces of the identities of the artisans who worked on Purnon in previous generations as we restore sections of the chateau. They signed their names and traced their tools in the stone, on the zinc and on the oak frame. Sometimes we recognise surnames whose descendants still live in our local villages. There is enormous respect for the workmanship of those in whose footsteps we walk today. They built a chateau without the technology (hydraulic lifts and cranes etc) that we can use today. Here at Purnon, they created a masterpiece. Every day we take small steps to save her. Thank you for your message!

  • Greetings From Melbourne, well she is coming along bit by bit. Your music that you have playing throughout your vlog is very mournful and i'm often moved to tears. So very excited about your bathroom coning along and can't wait to see the bespoke wall paper. Are you having heated towel rails and other heating in the bathroom. 51 days now until I head home to France to see my baby and begin phase 2 where work will start in earnest on the inside. Sending best wishes and very excited about your bathroom reveal.😊

  • Love watching you work on this beautiful building. I suggest that you get 1 inch diameter pvc pipe or something similar. You will need to cut the sections between 12 and 17 inches. Once cut place the table legs in the cut pipe to raise the table to counter height. It is much easier on your back than leaning over the table to cut wall paper. There are videos on KZhead about correct measuring for raising the height of a folding table. Good luck

It looks in good nic where it remains, I think we saw you ages ago discussing having some matching paper created, or did I imagine that? One of the chateaux got a quote to do so and the cost was astonishing. Glad to see that you are heading towards a bit of luxury in the bathroom! 🇦🇺 PS that handbasin Is gorgeous!

    • I don't think that was us (discussing having it copied). We have all the panels. Some have been taken down for protection purposes while the roof and facades were being restored on that corner of the chateau. It's a Rhand block painted paper from Reveillon Workshop in Paris from the end of the eighteenth century. The paper in this room is the last surviving example of it in France. We will definitely preserve and protect it. In fact we love it so many much, we chose it as the end papers for our book 'Chateau Reawakening'. Thanks for your message!

    • Thanks for your suggestion. We collect the slate tiles as they are removed from the roof and craft them into beautiful boxed drink coasters which we sell via our website at www.chateaupurnon.com. We keep other important elements (such as hand forged iron nails, sections of the zinc guttering, certain elements of the oak frame, several of the old chimney pots etc) which will be displayed in our chateau museum.

  • Such a beautiful bathroom! Love the choices you've made. You probably already know about that tool that I think is called a "Chasse clous" that lets you hammer in tight places without risking hitting the surrounding part and damaging it (was thinking that would have been handy when you were nailing in place the gallery on the console you're using for a washbasin stand, which itself is fabulous). If you're not familiar with it, it's like a poinçon with an inverse concave end that just fits over the nailhead. Might come in handy if you have to do more of that kind of nailing. I've forgotten what the name of it is in English, so now I've successfully forgotten words in both languages! 😁 Love that blue wallpaper in the room where you were cutting the wallpaper backing. Such a massive job on the roof, but like you said, it's in good hands!

    • Thanks for your message.... possibly a tack hammer? Quite right - we should have used it in this instance. Thanks for your message and for following our journey!

      19 күн бұрын
    • @ No, you'd still use a hammer, but after you've got the nail far enough in (almost all the way in), you use this "Chasse clous" held over the nail head, and you'd hit that instead of the nail directly. You can also use it when you need the nail head to go below the surface (like on floors). I wish I could remember the English word for it, but it's not coming to me. If we could post pictures, I'd post a picture of one of mine. Anyway, hope that makes sense! And, I wish you a great week ahead, looking forward to the next videos!

Il existe aussi, la BNF, Bibliothèque Nationale de France. • Why did the first residents build such a large house? What was it to be used for?

    @janeharris6925@janeharris692518 күн бұрын
    • There are around 40,000 chateaux (or large houses like Chateau de Purnon) across France. They formed part of the economic model in Western Europe in earlier centuries. Essentially noble families were granted land from the King. They rented that farming land to tenant farmers and the income they received financed the construction of these huge houses. They had large families (to guarantee the surviving sons who would inherit the noble title and the estate). They also had servants and domestic staff to make their lives comfortable. Hence , the large houses to accommodate these people. They entertained in grand style and their homes were designed originally as fortresses to protect their wealth and then from about the 17th Century on , as grand statements of their social prestige. These buildings are the chateaux that we can admire today. Thankfully, the economic model that gave rise to them no longer exists. However, preserving the architectural heritage of previous generations is a project worth striving for (we believe!). Thanks for your question and for following our journey!

  • Where is the master bedroom? What floor?

    @user-fs8tl7ni1w@user-fs8tl7ni1w18 күн бұрын
    • Good question. Traditionally, in noble families the husband and wife did not share the same bedroom. They lived in separate apartments with their own beds, dressing rooms etc. But at Purnon, the maquis and the marquise who built the chateau had somewhat 'modern' living arrangements and they did in fact share a master bedroom that was located on the ground floor. They had separate beds that were arranged side by side. It's in one of the chateau's largest rooms that we now call the salon driver or winter salon. Today, however, the question as to which bedroom is the most 'desirable' is an unresolved one as the restoration proceeds. Certain rooms on the southern side of the chateau receive beautiful light, others will have nicer ensuites occupying corner positions with windows and natural light. Others have large walk-in robes. In short, we don't know yet!
