I wish tesla would just give educators free or discounted access to that stuff. Especially someone like yourself that is spreading the knowledge.
I agree, but I am not optimistic it will happen. Thanks for watching
@@WeberAuto id a few months before this was available we would have been surprised to find this! thanks for sharing, I have been a little scared to try repairing a tesla if i cant get into the computers! still a little worried but i guess thats life!
Prof. Kelly, this content transfer is one of the main reasons the internet was created. Hats off to the great learning channel, the way you present, and for actually teaching instead of being solely researched focus. I greatly appreciate your contribution to a more informed world. Thank you.
You have a talent of a great educator. Thank you Sir!
You have got to have one of the best channels on ytube I had a diesel repair shop for 20 years and stumbled across your channel I’ve been hooked ever since really enjoying the information and the teaching that you do keep up the great work!
Very happy to see you are doing well, Professor, and happy to see you're posting videos again!
If all my lecturers spoke with such clarity, I would’ve probably gotten HD’s for all my courses.
Professor, to have the absolute best EV channel on KZhead. Even though I don't know much about EVs, I'm glued to every second of every video you release. I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Thank you very much
💯%
Never thought I’d see JSON output for something coming out of a car … 🤯 Excellent video, as always.
Thank you very much
Haha yea I’m not surprised TESLA is an engineering company and Engineers love JSON lol
@@WeberAuto You may need another utiltiy to read this JSON to more useful info. Otherwise it looks like straight from a developers kitchen., not very useful.
@@punchar4161 you learn to use it as a technician and becomes second nature.
As always: premium content. Thank You.
Glad you like them!
Happy Thanksgiving, Professor Kelly! We can't thank you enough for all of your excellent KZhead materials!

Mrs Kelly: Oh, an Ethernet cable as a Christmas gift?!? Prof. Kelly: that sucker is made by Tiffany’s!!
Lol. It must be!
Once again opening the knowledge box that nobody else is actively exposing to the youtube society of curious people Thanks again
Thank you!
Professor Kelly thanks again for key contributions to my knowledge and furthering the community. Stay Well and Healthy. Best Wishes from California.
I agree with Dave Osbun's comments. Thanks from Australia
Thanks for watching
The DTCs and Vitals are both returning json - a common data format that we software engineers use when transferring data between systems - especially in web services. Interesting.
Prof. Kelly, an interesting subject among EV technology is how stray eddy currents are confined in the different designs. For example the Leaf has a twin brush assembly on a dry extension of the gear reducer intermediate shaft, and these cars have proven reliability. The Kona/Niro/Soul/Ioniq EV family seem to have only a light circular brush at the (grease-lubed bearing) motor output shaft and also have a history of quickly-blackening gear oil. There have also been a number of unexplained failures within that family of EVs and I have to wonder if the brush gets greasy nearby bearings could suffer over time. I think identifying the mitigation methods chosen in the EV/PHEV/HEV parts you have in your shop could make a good subject for a video.
Thanks for your effort in sharing your experience with us
It's my pleasure, thank you
Thenks for all !!! And have a good year Professor!
As always beautiful Video🫠🌏
Professor, its good to see you again !
Thank you Ulrich!
Thank you for the info. I am glad Tesla finally has given access to this information. Hope to see more videos.
Thanks Mike! More to come. It has been a very busy semester for me.
I have been working on software-tools for computer-systems servicing for more than 5 years. This tool - especially the vitals - look very raw to me. While a skilled engineer can do all the work with these values, it will take ages to do so manually. I have been building scripts to take that tedious work from the humans and put it into computer-code. These "translators" seem to be missing here. Either Tesla is having these tools internally and not (yet?) handing them out, or they don't have them either. In that case, I am not surprised that servicing some cars takes ages. On the other hand: this data is very computer-readable and it will probably only be a matter of time until industrious people will write those translators and make them available. Enthusiasts might do that for free, but there is also a market here to create and sell them. Lots of problems are surely diagnosable by looking at the vitals once or over a shorter or longer period. Thanks for letting us have a look.
Thanks Chris, I hope I am just missing something, but it looks like there is room for improvement. A live data list would be helpful for me.
Toolbox 2 and 3 for "External" service shops is severly crippled and not working as intended. Yet we are forced to pay a hefty premium for sub standard software. It's a joke.
@John Brennan teslas are great have have 4 of them, but the company is very immature in relation to its independant shops. We wont accept money grabs. Were here to make money, not battling in endless discussions on parts availability and crippled software.
This is minimalism, Musk knows that hacking/improving this is going to happen so he'd rather have his people focusing on future projects. The shareholders price it high because they can. Affordable, better version of this is already available, I hope!
@@WeberAuto Did you try out the Scan my Tesla phone tool? I've seen Tesla-Bjørn did take quite a few trips with the tool to see when the battery pre-heats etc.
Happy Thanksgiving! Love all the information on these videos. Your Ford Escape Hybrid video was a lot of help years ago.
Thank you very much!
congratulations, my professor Kelly, for all your excellents videos, I follow your channel from Mexico.
Thank you!
A fantastic video - you start where others don't dare to go. I would be happy to see further videos on tesla diagnosis as soon as you dive deeper in it. It would also be interesting to get a deeper understanding of how this diagnosis works. It looks like a mixture of web application and a local ethernet connection which is very interesting by itself. (Maybe get some IT guy to dive a little deeper and maybe do some wireshark analysis of what ist happening here.)
Thank you Thomas. More to come as I experiment more.
Prof. Kelly, Happy Thanksgiving to you and you family!!
Same to you! Thank you
Thanks a lot.. good job
Thanks for your effort and time, it is appreciate more then you believe 👍
I appreciate that, thank you Allan
Thank you!!!!
Good idia sir thank you.
Greetings from Poland . great channel very good knowledge
Speaking as web developer, this is super interesting in that the diagnostic system appears to be implemented within a browser. I wonder if the car is speaking in some sort of REST API with the browser directly. That would be really neat, in that you could conceivably make your own UI for doing some of the maintenance operations, like activating the ABS for bleeding purposes.
it seems that way! man if we got documentation on the API that it seems to have that would be cool!!!
Volvo VIDA diagnostics interface from the early 2000s worked the same way using Internet Explorer, with a Volvo specific USB to CAN adapter (later generic CAN adapters were also implemented but many were incompatible).
Hello John. Good to see you again.
Thank you Martin! It has been a very busy semester for me. I hope to get back to making new videos soon.
Prof. Kelly, again a superb video! Great! The Tesla diagnostics is a "bit" sketchy, quite disappointing for that money. But I hope the competing diagnostics software companies will offer something better from user interface quality perspective, after reverse engineering is completed.
Well said! Thanks for watching
Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
Good work air
Amazing video! I was wondering if you had anymore videos running through other automotive diagnostic tools?
Thanks!
Thank you Oismyo!
Thank you for the video, you are a great teacher. Can you tell me what information/data is available through a standard scan tool using the conventional OBDII diagnostic port on the Tesla S 2020
Mega Awesome Video
Thank you Scott
Would live if you can teach how to identify a single bad cell inside of a module. Some independent shop are doing this type of work, its amazing!
Thanks for showing this. I'm thinkn bout doing the day pass thing so I can add a charger to my model s to make it dual... Basically would be just for fun tho since it's unlikely I would really go over 40 A charge rate.
Great!
Are you able to enable towing package through the toolbox? If a proper OEM Tesla Hitch is installed and wiring is connected?
Your channel is awesome 👏 I wondered if you can do some videos on Corolla hybrid just like prius and rav4 plz🙏
I have an Autel Maxisys elite scan tool and about a month ago when I downloaded the latest update I got a Tesla added to the list of manufacturers. So far its only has S and X. I poked around and it’s able to communicate with battery systems and all modules on those cars which is exciting. I didn’t think it will require any special cable. I thought all oems must have an OBD2 port. I haven’t had any teslas come into my shop yet.
Interesting. Older Teslas have a 16-pin OBD port, but it is not required for electric vehicles and it does not connect to the on-car ethernet network that this system connects to.. The models 3 and Y do not have a 16-pin DLC at all.
There is a lot of information on the CAN bus. Many apps can read them via generic OBD dongles. It may not have an OBD port but cheap adapter / cable is available.
Hope all is well with you 🙏.
Hello professor, great EV channel. I was wondering if there is a tool list like they have in the T Ten program in order to work as a Tesla Tech. Thank you in advance for your help.
Happy thanksgiving! This is unrelated to the video, but I would love to see you review a current generation Nissan Xtronic CVT. Nissan has changed a couple things with the newer transmissions, and it would be neat to see you break the transmission down into all the parts and review it like you do with other transmissions.
Thank you and Thanks for the suggestion
Hi professor. Love your videos, one of the few that are long but I hang on every word. I have a question for you. I have a 2012 Coda. It has an obd 2 connector on it. Is there an obd 2 scan tool that I can buy that will tell me error codes and a way to read them and clear them? Or lead me in the direction to find one. Thanks again for all your good work.
Professor Kelly which hybrid vehicle is the most efficient for higher speed highways (75-80 mph in Texas)? Unfortunately it doesn't seem that PHEV's are readily available in this state. Thank you for making your videos, I'm the commercial manager at one of the multi billion dollar international auto part stores and I love the technical information you provide. I watched your transmission fluid history series last week while on vacation, and I'm going to rewatch it probably this weekend just to make sure I absorbed the information you went over. I'm very skeptical about the all make all model fluids now, I was before but a Dex/Merc or unlicensed Mercon V being put in most applications is very sketchy.
Show, Obrigado
Thank you
Cool what I need to know to be a tech. Very interested in Tesla semi to.
Hello, excellent video, today is a newer version of toolbox 3, I use it in my shop but have never find a DTC chart for Tesla, do you have any idea about this problems, instead paying the service manual we have a DTC chart, and the DTC showed in toolbox has no international OBD code like P, C, B or U, is only a number.
Thanks for the first peek into Tesla diagnostics. They sure need to add dynamic data log functionality. Static data points just don’t cut it. Can you at least export the list of data points?
Thank you. Yes, you can copy and paste the data into another application.
@@WeberAuto uggh, can’t believe they are charging for this ‘alpha’ level of diagnostic ability. It’s barely a step above a library card. Anyway, enjoy your evening and thanks for sharing.
Hey there do you have any more videos about teslas ? I am about begin a TESLA internship as an Automotive Tech and i wanted some more insight on Tesla and how they work. Thanks
Happy Thanksgiving Professor Kelly. Always look forward to your videos. Never can learn enough especially with the changes that continually happen. While I don't believe we're ready in the world for full ev vehicles the software and hardware behind full ev and hybrids is fascinating.
Thank you very much
Great video Professor Kelly, thank you, it seems Tesla want to be very different to every other car maker in all aspects of what they do. The software appears to be extremely clunky. Thanks very much for sharing this 😉
Thanks for watching!
You have a great talent for teaching. I have a Model Y that's gets to a point where the AT&T 2G/3G/LTE signal is not received but I have signal from another carrier in the area. I understand that Tesla provides a 2nd physical SIM Card slot in the Computer . They call it "Third party SIM", to activate it you contact the service team and they will do it, you have to provide a waiver and the APN of the service provider. The question is, can this be done using the Toolbox 3? Can I activate that SIM card and add the APN? The toolbox 3 is now $500 I have to ask before I purchase a month. Hope you can help.
Professor, did you have to use some sort of adapter to connect the vehicle with a laptop?
Hi John what is your workaround with "odin block" issue on modle s and x what is the trick to unlock odin / gateway ?
So it looks like this allows one to re-code a drive. This might be very helpful for people wanting to do ev builds using the module 3/y hardware.
I am not sure you can recode a drive to something different than the VIN allows. It would be interesting to try. Thanks for watching
Off topic. Have you heard about the 2019 and newer high voltage rear mgr cable that is having corrosion issues? especially in Canada where they are starting a recall. Do you have any suggestions on how I could prevent this problem? I was thinking of using die electric grease in the cable housing, do you think this is a good idea? Thanks
Hello Professor John Kely, I live in Portugal and I watch all your videos and I have learned a lot from you. I am very grateful for your work. I would like to challenge you to make a video about the new 100% electric Citroen Ami. This is a car that is being a bestseller in Europe because it is a very simple and low-priced car. I have a Citroen Ami and I would like professor John Kely to dismantle this car and explain to us how it is possible to make a car so simply. I would also like to know if the speed lock is done in the controller that is inside the motor or if it is in the ECU softwer? Thank you in advance and I wish you good health, a hug. Paulo Carvalho
i think i just might buy this
I forgot to mention, it does not work on some older model S and X vehicles. I suspect 2016 and above are supported, the model S I used in the video is a 2018. All model 3 and Y are supported.
Hi Professor, I have toyota hybrid, 12 volt battery is low and some times it discharges after 5 days or so, do you think if I don't change 12 volt for long time, this will hurt my hybrid battery at long run??? Just curious Thanks for you answer!
Can use for activate sim card?
@weberauto is there any way to disable the seatbelt chime? I know features won’t work if the buckle is not in but just simply to remove the chime?
good info,,,,always wonder what they have for diagnost,,,,mabee they will change it for better,,,,,they have lot of car on the road so more tech job and more training
Thanks for watching
Could you please tell me what is Odin output when you get service alert
Is there any way to adjust the tension on the accelerator pedal, because I have a problem with my foot after foot surgery
Hey WeberAuto does this tool or any Tesla tools let you search or input other vehicles VIN to see what’s in the car such as option codes?
Hi dear professor I’m Yousif, i have questions about my hybrid car Es300h 2021 it has in the dashboard (resolver-1 not adjusted) 1.how can i adjust the resolver? 2. Does this make the gaz engine run bad? Because this is the case in my car. 3. Do u have online courses? Is yes how can I join? Thanks for your wonderful vids and for sharing ur knowledge.
I believe the in car display has a more advanced service data and service interface if true they should let people access that for a fee
That would be nice. Thanks for watching
Sir please put a vedio for Volvo XC 90 hybrid vehicles I will waiting for your reply
Hello professor. I am interested in any information on the AUDI A3 E-tron Hybryd DQ400 gearbox. Have you ever disassembled or repaired?
Can u do a review or talk about the CADILLAC ELR ELECTRIC CAR SINCE I HAVE 1 2014
This was online diagnostics with ODIN. For this you don't have to connect the ethernet cable. Did you test the windows full client Toolbox software? It provides better experience.
From what I can tell, the windows based Toolbox 2 application is discontinued. Toolbox 3 is the replacement. I know there is a method of connecting to the vehicle wirelessly, but I do not see where any non-Tesla service personnel have access to it. Thanks for watching.
@@WeberAuto At 7:17 when you click connect to vehicle and drop down menu comes up, to the right of "connect locally" there is another drop down arrow. If you are able to connect wirelessly it should show up once you click on the arrow on the right upper side.
Аnother great video from Professor Kelly thanks.... But the truth, I'm not a big fan of tesla car... Partly due to lack of technical information, and spare parts !!!
Thank you Traqn! Fair enough, but that is all changing now. I understand that parts can be purchased if you setup a parts account online. Now we have access to service information, scan tool software, and parts. All we need is training access and mainstream Tesla service can happen. (Long overdue)
@@WeberAuto In fact, from auto parts, the manufacturer can make a good money, let's hope Tesla notices this !! this would be good for both, the clients and us mechanics..
Does the toolbox have info how to perform maintenance such as coolant flush, brake repair etc?
Hi Professor Kelly, greetings from Guatemala. I have a Model S P85+. I'm trying to find out the port to connect the vehicle but I can't... Excuse me where is supposed to be?
Hi, do you know on Tesla model Y where is the location of Toolbox 3 diagnostic connector. Thanks,
I assume it is not a standardized OBD/UDS - or extended system...I think it is just a Linux inside and you can grab/request similar as in command line the Data... like client server it is not Autosar at all...
Australian viewer here, only service info for the Roadster (which was never officially sold here) is available to me. Anyhow.....little steps towards Right to Repair.
I have a crazy idea: an ev for the common man, fully serviceable and simple in design, designed to be repaired as simply as possible. There are some compromises required: brushed dc motor, old school rotating brushed drum for pwm speed control, battery pack each individual cell replaceable and checkable. Will be some efficiency loss compared to say a tesla style ev, but would be cheap and last a long long long time.
👍👍
There is, I believe, a requirement in the EU for a standardised On Board Diagnostic (OBD) port for ICE vehicles. I've no idea i this applies to EVs. Anyone out there know?
Good morning sir,It been a while you haven't uploaded any content. We send you greeting from Accra Ghana.
Hi professor, I’m technician from FCA( Fiat and Chrysler automobile) I decide to learn only EVS, car, I leaved in Virginia how can I follow your training at your university in my state?
Hi, do you know on Tesla model Y where is the location of the Toolbox 3 diagnostic connector? Thanks,
I have a US Spec Tesla Model 3 SR+ 2021 and took it with me to Germany, is there a way to update the Maps to the EU region that you know of?
Have you figured out why a lot of the tests dont work on the model x 2020 ? the best feature is service mode plus and you bring up the can viewer so you can watch the air suspension work or you can get a live view of the service logs
I experienced a similar thing on our 2018 Model S. Sometimes I had to restart the browser, other times it just wouldn't work. Maybe there is a sequence of actions that must be performed first, I am still learning. I still need to try the service plus mode, I read about it, but forgot to try it. Thanks for watching.
@@WeberAuto you can enable service mode plus and then disconnect the laptop …you can firmware reinstalls and still stay In that mode ..I also did the reformat sd card that works …I couldn’t get the air suspension service mode to work and none of the drive inverter tests work or Thermo tests ..no coolant purge mode or AC open solenoid evac mode no worky on 2020 mx
I have the fsd beta firmware installed I was that might be the issue
@@WeberAuto I tied 2 different firmware versions and 2 different laptops plus chrome and edge browser i checked everything
@@WeberAuto on my 2019 m3 all the tests worked fine
Be careful, make sure you let people know not everything works in T3,the buttons are there but you still cannot run procedures successfully, if you get subscription to do a coolant purge, it may not work and there is no official support yet and it's impossible to get a refund at this time. I was going to post a video showing this software a month ago but the subscription is $333 a month and you can't do too much with it yet...unless Tesla very recently updated it... buyer beware. Tesla told me this should get fixed eventually and this is why they have not pushed this to the public yet.... No after purchase support.
Can you print the pages as you go so a tech would be able to relate A to B and so on?
Yes, you can print the service information. The data list can be copied and pasted into another app for comparison or printing if desired
Thanks for the info. I have enjoyed your videos for a long time, it looks like Musk might become one of the Right to Repair sponsors its about time especially for farmers that can pay a very large amount of money to transport very large heavy equipment to the dealers many miles away.
I enjoy you vids. I could care less about Tesla. I am curious about what disabled your ability to walk? MS maybe?
How did they get around the OBD2 standard?? I thought every light duty vehicle had to follow that standard connection type and location
Because it doesn't apply to pure EVs - the reason that OBD2 was originally made mandatory was so it could be used for emissions testing, so since EVs don't need emissions tests they don't need to implement OBD2 either. There are some pure EVs that still have it - generally ones that are based on platforms that also have ICE powered variants, but there is no legal requirement.
Just like Apple, sort of helpful but not really cheap. Ask Rich from the electrified garage! Ultimate contact re right to repair: Louis Rossmann!!!!
does anyone know if is possible to reprogram modules with this Diagnostic Software? like power steering?
I always wondered why is Tesla allowed to not have an obd2 port I thought these were a legal requirement ?
