Asian Hornet Nest Removal of a nest I recently had treated on scrub land adjacent to my house. If you're here because of the recent news about the Asian Giant Hornet In the USA please be advised before commenting that this is not the same species that arrived in the US.
This is a video about Vespa Velutina or Asian Hornet, Not the Giant Japanese Hornet Vespa Mandriana.
This nest was destroyed by a pest control company with a Lance and spray of a Pyrethroid insecticide. slowish anting but very effective.

The Asian GIANT hornet (Vespa Mandarinia) is up to two inches long. The Asian hornet (Vespa Velutina) is barely over an inch. Asian hornets build big egg-shaped nests above ground in bushes or in trees. Asian GIANT hornets build un-enveloped nests in holes in the ground, or in hollow tree trunks. Asian GIANT hornets are the ones that wipe out beehives. Asian hornets are just regular dicks.

They shouldn't take notes. This is not the same species that recently arrived in the US. This is Vespa Velutina, the Asian hornet. The ones in the US are Vespa Mandarinia, the Asian GIANT hornet. Confusing, I know. Key differences: Asian Giant hornet (Mandarinia) -1.8-2.4 inches long -Builds nests in holes in the ground, or in hollow tree trunks. -Originates in Asia, is an invasive species in North America since September 2019. Asian hornet (Velutina) -1.4-1.6 inches long -Builds above-ground ball-shaped nests with a paper envelope -Originates in Asia, is an invasive species in Europe since 2004 It's unfortunate that the names are so similar because that leads people to think that these are the species in the US, and therefore expect to see that kind of nest. The reality is it's very hard to find an Asian giant hornet nest because they will usually hear you coming via vibrations in the ground and intercept you well before you find the little 2-inch hole in the dirt that leads to their nest.

Hi Richard, I'm british but live in Spain, Galicia, we have a similar problem to france. We had some 15 hives and am now down to 2. Last year and this year the velutina(asian hornet) have been very prolific, bottle traps and electronic harps have not been enough to keep them at bay. Just in our municipal alone they have alegedly destroyed over 2000 nests.I have spent hours in front of the hives with a raquet covered in mouse glue to try to help but its out of hand with very little help from the authorities. To help try to save the last 2 we closed them up and fed them with very dilute honey from cappings to give them something to help through winter. Its going to be a struggle to make new populations as they are growing only slightly faster than what the velutina is culling them down. We will have to resort to buying nucleos in the spring if we wish to continue. I have subscribed and will watch through all your videos to pick up any tips i can, thanks for sharing.

Thankfully we don't have these in the USA. We do have European Hornets though. However they seem to not be so bad
The Bee Man And crazy ants. They are coming from the south and southwest states I do generator service in upstate ny and I’ve had a few incidents of ants in my transfer switch controllers and generator controllers. It kills their little electronic heart and then I get a call in the middle of the night because of a non operational unit. I won’t even get into the mice but they are nasty little things too, and the wasp/hornet nests come summertime.

That being said, I hope we do not get them in the USA, but with how we transport goods I could very well be getting calls for this species someday. Hello Richard! Yes, they are in Portugal, mainly where Portugal is green and has plenty of water, in the north and center. I guess the pests love it here. Due to the fact that now they make headlines every week, I've been learning about it. So I loved to watch your video. I was looking forward to getting images like these. I wanted to see the inside of one of those nests. It does not disappoint. Incredible animals for sure. But they kill the bees so we must kill it! I have had one little nest on my TV lounge window. It was about 4 inches in size and contained 4 or 5 larvae. I was sad at the time of destroying it but now I realize I did the right thing. That was about 10 years back in Pakistan.

They scrape off the bark from trees and make a kind of paper Mache. it doesn't last long. they never reuse the same nest/ thamks for the qusetion.

Basically Joshua, when the news of this hornet having become established in France met the internet, a lot of clickbait sites and misinformed news outlets popularised the idea that the Asian hornet and the Asian giant hornet were the same thing.

The kicker is the species found in Canada /US was in the fall of 2019, and it’s only made a media splash now. I don’t believe any have been found this year yet. I could be wrong, but no one actually reports it as found in 2020. Just the media doing its thing.

What we have in Washington right now is three times that size and much more dangerous to humans
not quite three times but they are bigger. They do take out beehives but only when the nests are fully developed in later summer. usually a good trap[per will have found them by then. its, not a disaster, just another thing for beekeepers to worry about and deal; with.

Thank you very much for producing this excellent video. I've seen live foraging workers of this species in Taiwan, but have only seen abandoned nests. One thing that impressed me about this species (Vespa velutina) is that they are very agile flyers, much like the baldfaced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) that we have in North America. Vespa crabro (which I've seen in the US, Spain, and Korea) seems somewhat less agile than V. velutina. I'm tempted to bring my protective suit to Europe to see this species in the field. By the way, I suspect their distribution in the UK will be limited to some extent by the climate with its cooler summers.
Cooler summers are not a thing anymore in western europe. It has been 3 years without atleast one summer month having an insane, century old record braking heat wave. Temperatures of 95F+ for weeks. It feels like climate change happened over night, back when I was a teen in the 00s this just was not the case. After the first "sahara summer" as we call it here in the early 10s it was all fun and I had a super summer but after almost a decade of this I am getting really tired of it. Its sickening.

these are the lesser banded hornets, pretty aggressive lil devils. the greater banded hornets apparantly have one of the most painful stings in the world (worse than asian giant hornet), but i hear these lesser banded ones are also pretty crazy

I dare say these Hornets serve no ecosystem purpose thus likely the product of genetic manipulation.
Wrong. Just like any other social wasp species, they play an important role in agricultural pest control because they are apex predators of other insects. They are only a problem when introduced to a new habitat, such as their introduction to Europe in 2004. They're an invasive species, but they do have an ecosystem purpose back where they come from. As for genetic manipulation, that's beyond ridiculous. Humans have coexisted with this species in its native habitat for thousands of years.

The hornets found here in the US in Washington State were dead and no signs of a nest. I love how the media wants people to freak out. These hornets have a mild temper until swatted or approached aggressively. Only the beekeepers should really worry, however yellow jacket traps will work to capture them. Great video though.
