They tore down my signs; I'd find them ripped out and thrown on the ground. I was also finding they'd shot my cats dead. These people like to kill; that makes them killers. Let them hunt with a camera or not at all. And if you get some baloney about thinning herds, I say, "Then stop killing their natural predators; like mountain lions, wolves, etc. These people just like to kill; they're sick.

    • Yeah. First time I've ever seen a dog put his arm around his little buddy. There is a saying that I picked up somewhere, possibly in college. "When you love something, let it go.' Fortunately, Beth already knew that she was acting as a surrogate mother, encouraging his independence and his natural instincts as an adult buck. I have watched this video so many times because I never get tired of it and I love the outpouring of affection and he just eats it up.

  • My Aunt and Uncle raised an orphan deer. She was never in captivity either. She came and went as she pleased. She finally left and made it on her own, but she never forgot. Every year she would bring her fawns to the house for them to see. She lived to be a ripe old age and they were sure she died of natural causes. This video reminded me of their experience.

But my Mother had deer that would come up to her back yard in the late afternoons at dusk to eat the pears from her tree that had fallen to the ground. She could watch them from the window while washing dishes. So David would buy and store corn in the garden shed to feed them. He told all the neighbors in the country "don't you kill my deer". They came around for years until he died and my Mother couldn't feed them anymore. I also believe they knew he was gone.

She had been hit by a car and he was too young to be by himself, so our neighbors took him home. He had no fear of humans, would walk right up to strangers and was very affectionate. Around the 4th of July, we realized he was likely deaf, because he didn't respond at all to the noise of fireworks. A deaf deer wouldn't last long in the wild. He ended up going to a petting zoo in Grand Junction, where he lived out his days being loved, petted and fed.

How many permits depends on how the herds are doing. Hunting actually has helped make the herds stronger and healthier. No, I'm not a hunter but I have been around it all of my life. Since you are concerned about the deer and all of the other wildlife out there, what is doing the most harm is all of building they are doing in areas where the wild population live. Every evening at 6 it clomped at the door for dinner. We put an orange vest and bell on it. Joined a herd in the woods and stopped coming, but would walk up to us in the woods while the rest of the herd ran. Thanksgiving with the family all at the house, pounding at the door. Opened the door and there it was, waltzed right in the living room as if coming to visit for Thanksgiving.

    • @@rachelbard4985 Actually, you're wrong there. Deer will eat young birds they find on the ground at times if protein is scarce in their food. Same with Giraffes and other herbivores. They will also chew on bones if calcium is lacking. And yes these are facts I can show you if you do not believe me, facts from actual wildlife researchers. In fact, even on farms where you have free-range poultry and you have goats. You will sometimes see a goat grab a baby chick and eat it. It's shocking the first time you see it, admittedly. But it does happen. Same with horses. I was raised on a farm, I've seen horses, and goats, grab baby chicks and eat them. All of our birds were free-range. Also, people HAVE to hunt the deer because there are no wolves in the area. If a deer population in the area gets TOO big, then the animals will start dying off from disease and starvation after, first, denuding an area of vegetation because they're hungry. And, to be honest, if I had to choose my way of death between being torn apart by a pack of wolves, or being shot in the head / chest area? I'd rather be shot. The death is very fast. Yes I am a hunter. I also go fishing. No I don't use snap traps or anything like that, I think THOSE are evil. There's no need to leave an animal in pain like that. If a person is going to kill an animal, it should be for food and other uses. I strongly disagree with those who do so for sport.

The difference is killing for sport, and killing for food.. Animals kill for food.. Lot of terrible humans kill just for sport and leaving their prey to rot.. That is the difference.. My grandfather always was a hunter and he treated his prey with great respect.. Only killing them if really necessary and when he did he made sure to eat almost the entire thing together with our neighborhood.. He also worked to keep the population on decent levels and hostile predators that don´t live in this region away.. Sometimes we got wandering wolves who come from Germany into our region and they really hurt the wild life here if left unchecked.. I compare it with fishing.. It is a lot of fun to do with friends and you can possibly even eat one on occasion, but catching fish to just leave them on the shore to rot is just cruel and pointless... There is the difference for me..

  • Amazing story, my dear!!! Here in the woods of Mary Land, just northwest of the nation's capital, we see deer in the backyard every day, all year round, but I've never been able to get that close to one!!! His level of trust with you is amazing, just a beautiful thing to watch. Thanks for sharing with the world!!!!

It's also great that he's kept his fear of any other people, that will definitely help keep him safe. Rocky putting his paw around Copper's neck was so sweet, just a good story all around 😊

    • Deer can't see orange. I'm sure that's why they chose that shade as a marker. Humans even wear that colour in their camouflage gear for hunting deer as a warning to other humans, but it's seen as a shade of green by deer.

    • I've heard people say that about sheep, and cows, but that's just how quadruped mammals play and show affection. They can't do much else with 4 legs and a mouth besides play chase, and if they have claws, they wrestle too, and lick. It's how they build coordination and muscle needed to hunt, or run from danger, and bond with others. There's a reason you never see them at The gym, and why Tindeer doesn't exist 😅 (The latter is because, like most coyotes, they're illiterate)
