Yeah autotune isn't used this obviously to fix someone's singing. If you can tell something is autotuned it is a stylistic choice. People drench vocals in melodyne all the time and you can't tell because they make it sound so clean. Nobody uses obvious autotune to cover up anything these days.

Seeing this song live was a whole ass experience (the entire show was) but this song really stood out to me live. It hits so much harder with the live drums and snippets of auto tune harmonies. Absolutely phenomenal and my fave version of the song

Attention everyone! The effect you're hearing on her voice during the chorus of this song is NOT auto-tune. I repeat. It is NOT auto-tune! She's using what's known as a vocoder. Auto-tune is used to correct pitch. It's not something you hear. And Billie has perfect pitch, so doesn't need it anyway. A vocoder is used to add various effects to vocals, such as in this song, xanny, bury a friend and most nearly everything else Billie has released to one degree or another. Thank you.
YOU ARE WRONG this is definitely autotune, not a vocoder. vocoder conflates a sound source "vocals" with synthesized sounds. which is KINDA like how autotune works, but still wrong this is autotune with a very fast and noticeable correction. it's been used for effect in music for decades at this point

You may be correct. After rereading my post, I do feel dumb for stating that auto-tune isn't used as an effect. It can be, obviously. What I hear in this song (and most of Billie's other effect-laden songs), however, is more of a vocoder effect, just layered densely amongst multiple recordings of her voice. Some of which could even have auto-tune applied for extra effect. There are so many effects that can be applied to any instrument that trying to decompile it simply through listening is nearly impossible. Even in my rather limited home studio I could easily apply dozens of various effects to a vocal sample, the end result of which may just end up sounding like auto-tune. Or a vocoder. Or both. Or Darth Vader impersonating Alvin and the Chipmunks. 😄 That's the age we live in. Billie or Finneas would have to weigh in and say exactly what was used I suppose.

Also, autotune is used for a more stylish way, just like Finneas and Billie did here, or just like Travis Scott does. To actually correct in an effective way, we use melodyne
