  • I love how Elle’s line “What? Like it’s hard?” kinda has a double meaning. #1, it proves how intelligent she is that she got into Harvard on her own merits THAT easily. #2, Harvard is known for taking bribes, meaning a lot of students got in because their parents paid for their acceptance (just like Warner’s did), so it actually isn’t hard to get into Harvard if you come from a wealthy family.

    • If you're black or latino it's easier to get into Harvard. If you're asian it's hard. The wealthy whites who got in because parents paid, must've held their own academically. Or else it wouldn't have flown under the radar. The statistics would show white poor performance, besides the affirmative action blacks at the bottom.

  • I think this professor has picked Elle not by chance; she saw that this student had no idea what's going on. She was the only one without a notebook, and her small heart shaped paper notebook would not be enough to write down a summary of even one lecture. Besides, the professor purposely shared the responsibility. She could have simply required that Elle leave; instead, she asked another girl's opinion. By doing so, she said to Elle not only: "See, we have strict rules here", but also: "See, your fellow students will show you no mercy". It was the most efficient way to deliver the message, much better than putting it all in words.

  • This reminds me of my first day of college. I show up to my very first class, psych, waiting on the previous class to get done, and I meet a girl waiting on the same class as me. She’s like “have you read the first 3 chapters yet?” And I felt so lost. We also had to bring a printed and signed copy of the class syllabus, which I knew nothing about. That was my wake-up call on how different college was gonna be from high school. 😅

My point is, most people finish senior highschool around 16-17 years old and they enter freshman college around 17-18. Elle is around 17-18 in this clip, not 22.

  • Omg this sort of happened to me too! I went to community college for five years and sometimes the professors expected you to read one or two chapters ahead of time, but not all of them. Also, you were never penalized if you didn’t read anything before the first day of classes. Then I went on to a University to get my Bachelor’s degree (which was another five years. ) Anyway, on the first day of classes everyone pulls out their syllabus!! I was so confused! And the professor gave credit to those that printed and brought their syllabus. Thankfully, I sat at the very back of the class and I just pulled out some other papers that I had to make it look like I had printed the syllabus off too. Thank goodness the professor didn’t actually go around the room and check each table individually. He just glanced around the room and gave everyone credit. We also had a reading assignment! Which I didn’t do because we had multiple novels that we were reading for the class and I had no idea where to start. AND I had no idea that there was a specific website for each class! I was SO mad at the orientation people!! Freshman went through THREE days of mandatory orientation and moved into the dorm rooms early. Yet, not one person even mentioned a syllabus or the website to access them! I thought that the professor would hand out the syllabus since I never received an email about it. I didn’t know that different colleges had different websites. I thought that there was like a universal one lol. So I went straight to the library after class and had a student worker help me set mine up. I never went to class without printing off a syllabus or doing some reading beforehand ever again. It has really saved me from having any embarrassing moments like that again!

She did allow me to leave the exam earlier AND gave a bonus extra 30 minutes to everyone else in the class to finish the exam. She was also a deputy judge that law professor.

Meaning that the assignment was clear enough, how could she miss it then?

    • Watsonian explanation: Her fashion merchandising classes probably didn’t require students to do readings before the first class.
