Tua, Dolphins fall to 49ers 33-17, Jimmy G out for season w/ broken foot | NFL | FIRST THINGS FIRST

Mark Schlereth joins Nick Wright, Chris Broussard and Kevin Wildes on First Things First to discuss the San Francisco 49ers current quarterback situation with Jimmy Garoppolo out for the remainder of the season with a broken foot. Broussard weighs in on the injury and explains Garoppolo will leave San Francisco as one of the winningest quarterbacks of all time. Nick explains 49ers backup quarterback Brock Purdy will be able to maintain the offense because it was designed with quarterback at low priority. The group explore the possibility of former Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield signing with the 49ers and debate whether the Miami Dolphins were exposed in their 33-17 loss to the 49ers.

They were driving with a chance to tie in the 4th quarter, but they turned it over on downs, in a play that was a few centimeters away from being a clean catch. That was pretty much the game. I disagree with them. I think the Phins and Tua are still in good shape, and I believe they'll bounce back from this loss.

That goes for Jimmy this year and Purdy. Teams are selling out to stop the run every week and it's made the 49ers into a passing offense, which requires competent QB play

Unfortunately, it’s a very slim chance Purdy can play well enough for the 49ers to go where they want. Rookie QBs are prone to make mistakes and too many mistakes will send you home in the playoffs.

    • Shanahan would greatly prefer to have his QB's pass under 35 time's per game. Shanahan's recipe for success is to lean on the ground game control the clock while defense limit's the big plays. But this season for various reasons the ground game has been highly inconsistent. Mainly due to as you said , The defense's are stacking the box which stifles our ground game and hinders the short passing game. Luckily Miami's defense isn't good. And the short passing game was effective. But Shanahan would love to be able to occasionally go down the field with deep passes. But knew Jimmy was highly inaccurate on deep passes. One reason they drafted lance.

  • Nick and Mark are right that Jimmy G is not the secret sauce of the 49ers offense. Any competent quarterback can beat top teams with that lineup. That said, every bit of extra talent helps if you want to win the SB. San Francisco will need some luck to win a championship with a backup QB, but it isn't impossible.

  • The 8 passes argument that ANY QB can play for the 49ers and get them to a SB has never made any sense to me. How can you base a QB's career or affect on a team from ONE GAME!!? What about the past 17 games of the season where Jimmy played great to even get them in the playoffs. Do those NOT COUNT?? lol .... I mean the 49ers running game is not the same as it was back in 2019 and they RAN it because GREENBAY couldn't STOP it something they SHOULD'VE DONE MORE IN THE SB. Brock Purdy looked good but so did Nick Mullens agains the Raiders. To assume Purdy can take this team to the SB and WIN IT., is really kind of a slap in the face to Jimmy and all he's been through. I hope Purdy is the answer. He certainly is better than Trey Lance.

  • um, career winning percentage is not a good stat when it's skewed by how long the qb played for his career. so mahomes and company (with the exception of brady) have a nice percentage, but they still have plenty of games to play that could bring it down. with garolovsky, he could retire now and stay at 70.2; but, then he's only played like 4 seasons compared to brady who has played in 20.

  • People thought last year was jimmy’s last year, but here he was. I could see him staying as a backup next year again. Yesterday we seen purdy play as good as, if not better, than jimmy G. He def looks better than trey lance though. His game script doesn’t require him to carry, only to play his part in getting the ball to the playmakers. Putting off the 49ers is nonsense.

  • 5 of Miami's previous losses in sub-40 degree weather were by other QBs. This is such a dumb take trying to pin bad play in cold weather on Tua specifically. Tua has played 0 games below freezing, played terribly in the rain last year in Tennessee, and put up 361 yards as a rookie vs the #1 seed Bills in 2020.

    @smudgeous4068@smudgeous4068 Жыл бұрын
    • They're always moving the goalpost with Miami. At first there were questions about Tua's ability to throw the deep ball. Then it was "How does he do against Super Bowl contenders in the Ravens and Bills." Then it became "All those wins against easy opponents mean nothing, look good against the 49ers on the road while missing 3 of your starting OL, or else you're fraudulent." Now they're taking early victory laps for finally being right about a negative prediction regarding Miami, and they decide to double down by saying we'll struggle down the stretch. Watch how they talk about how the Chargers can beat us prior to SNF, then watch how they'll talk about the Chargers as a trash team after we stomp them. Then the following week, if we beat the Bills, Nick will just make the topic be about the Bills losing the #1 seed to his Chiefs rather than talk about the Dolphins making him put his foot in his mouth.
