This is a 1992 Toyota Supra Turbo equipped with a sport roof and adjustable suspension, finished in teal metallic paint (code 749) for all you Toyota freaks out there, and no, this is not the MKIV Supra most people associate with the name Supra, but almost just as good! Give me a few minutes and I will tell you everything you need to know about this car, show you some of my favorite features, take it for a drive and give you some driving impressions, and lastly I will show you what to LOOK for if you are planning on buying one!
The name Supra goes back generations with direct lineage to the incredible Toyota 2000GT borrowing not just design cues, but the incredible inline 6 engine. Something you may not know is that the Supra wasn’t always called the Toyota Supra. Originally, the Supra was offered as a trim with Celica models and it wasn’t until this 3rd generation Supra that the name cut ties and went out on its own! But this wasn’t just any trim level, it was actually quite intricate and involved. Toyota even developed its own logo for this model. It's like they knew they were going to branch it out, but wanted to test out the waters first...
On Jan. 1, 1979, Toyota officially introduced the Supra here in the US. The first Generation Supra was the Celica Supra (chassis code A40/A50) as I mentioned before a spin-off of the Toyota Celica model with a few different variants including the A47 Performance Package in the US market or the Celica XX (or Dos Equis as I called it) for the Japanese market. That chassis was made from 1978 to 1981 and it was just a nicer Celica with an inline 6 and better features. A 2.6-liter inline six-cylinder engine (codename 5M-E) producing 110 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque powered the Celica Supra. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a four-speed automatic was available as an option. In order to accommodate the larger inline 6 engine, Toyota had to stretch the front of the car by approximately 5-inches over the standard Celica. This was the beginning of something big!
The second generation Supra (chassis code A60) was also called the Toyota Celica in the US and the Celica XX for the Japanese markets. For the 1982 model, Toyota completely redesigned the chassis with help from Lotus making it longer, wider, but reducing the wheelbase to make it handle better and increase agility. The looks somewhat resembled that of a Lotus Esprit, whether that was intentional or not, you be the judge. Toyota gave it pop up headlights and overall a much more sportier look and feel I think. This chassis was made from 1982 to 1986 and just like the previous model, it was derived from the Celica and thus called the same.
This chassis came in 2 trims, the L-type and the P-type, both sharing the same drivetrain, a 2.8L inline 6 cylinder engine (codename 5M-GE) producing 145 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque powered the second generation Supra. A standard five-speed manual and available four-speed automatic remained as the transmission options. Power output was later increased with the last year Supra producing 161 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque in 1986.
And now onto the MK3 Supra and the very first model to actually wear the Supra badge in all its glory. The Supra name parted ways with the Celica coming out to perform its solo act. At this point, the Celica model was ruined in my opinion, and not because there wasn't a Supra trim, but because Toyota decided to make it front wheel drive! More on that in another video. This third generation Supra was released as a 1986.5 model as Toyota faced production issues and had to delay its release. The production ran all the way to 1992, but what many people don’t know is that the same issue happened with the MKIV Supra and therefore you may find a rare few 1993 MK3 Supra models as well. The MKIV Supra wasn’t released until 1993.5, but I’ll give you all the juicy stuff about the MKIV in an upcoming video. The MK3 Supra retained the traditional rear-wheel-drive setup with a 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine producing 200 horsepower and 196 foot pounds of torque. The 1987 model year saw the addition of a turbo model that pushed output to 230 horsepower and 240 foot pounds of torque. By 1989, Toyota did a facelift on this car by changing the front bumper, taillights, side trim, a 3-piece wing and most notably increasing power output by 2 horsepower and 14 foot pounds of torque!

  • I enjoyed my beautiful, black, 1987 Supra 5-speed, but I replaced it with an even sexier, black, 1990 Celica Alltrac Turbo, which I love & will probably never sell. I find the Celica better in almost every way. Have never looked back or regretted it, but I do get excited anytime I see a mk3 Supra on the street, as they are still very attractive cars. BTW, if you want a sweet Japanese grand tourer, also consider a Lexus SC400 - timeless style, smooth ride, great high speed composure & incredible reliability.

    • Can't argue with that! The Celica Alltrac is a great car with a very different purpose than the Supra. The SC is a MKIV Supra in disguise... • First car i bought in 1999 was a 89 supra. Of course i almost immediately had to get the motorblock done and it was consuming oil almost at the same rate as gas. The stock radio and loudspeakers needed to be dealt with too... All in all, especially now, over 20 years later, this is not a everyday car at all. You want to preserve it and give it all the parts needed. Even stock, turning the ignition key and hearing that engine come alive and the vibration in the cockpit and stick shift, hard to find these days. The upwards bent long hood is just beautiful, and one you start to pimp up the car for some extra power, this thing becomes a beast. Lots of fun times playing with Porsche, BMW and Mercedes cars on german Autobahn.

  • Been driving the same 87 Turbo since 96. Had 110K now has 306K. The bones of many Supras has kept this one on the road. The way to tell a 87 from a 88 Turbo is by the shape of the 3rd brake light under the wing. 87 is rectangular, 88 is trapezoidal. 89 to 92 has it in the edge of the wing as you stated.

I once owned an 85 supra and it was fantastic but then I was able to purchase my first new car, an 87 supra turbo in pearl white. It was such an awesome vehicle for its time. Bulletproof, comfortable, very fast and great handling. I wish I still owned it and might buy another one someday if I find a clean one like the one you showed in your video. I read in a forum the it’s better to just buy seals for the 4 bolts located in this are because they tend to leak oil and cause your car to have misfires . I noticed they they were leaking badly on my 7m -ge when I started to take the head off . Lmk if you’ve experienced this issue with yours .

  • Great video Miguel! Since the car is from that dealer in PA, I'm curious if you are in PA also? I have 2 turbo MK3 Supras in NY, an 89 5spd, and a 91 auto. Unfortunately my 91 has been sitting in the garage for quite some years waiting to have the engine build completed. I'm looking for a mechanic that knows the car and engine, but it seems there aren't many out here. Would love to hear from you about possible shops in the area that could so the work.

I do know the guys from Unit 12 Motoring in New Jersey and they are standup guys. Give them a call! Thanks again for your comment, and please don't forget to subscribe if you haven't done so already. • Great video and thanks for putting some knowledge in this brick head of mine. I’m the new owner of a 1987 Turbo Supra with 115,00.00 on the clock and everything has just been made new from bumper to bumper. Engine, turbo, transmission, all handling parts. Interior is in great shape and paint is good but I’m going to have her painted anyway. The Targa top comes off easy and she is a sweet car. I’m the owner of a 2001 Ford Lightning and Mustang Gt. Tired of everyone pulling up and having to hit the throttle in the Lightning to prove her worth. I’m ready to enjoy this Supra and let her take me all over the U.S. thanks again for a great video and look forward to learning all I can about this car and keeping her stock.

But anything is possible with discipline. I saved my money for the purchase and now I feel whole again. (Even if my new ones isn’t as nice as my first Supra). Nice video, very informative.

  • I've been driving my '87 turbo since 1996. Now approaching 300K miles on the body ( 3rd engine). I notice on the car you're demonstrating that there must've been a leak at the turbo cooling hose coming out of the thermostat standpipe. Tightening the hose or using plumbers putty on the 90° elbow should solve that. Was studying your engine detail for the vacuum hose clips to get them write on mine! Toyota has a webpage for Supra owners to suggest 5 parts they would like to see remade since most have been out of production for years. Parts yards are pretty much dried up and eBay is about the only place you can find hard to get parts.

Fun to drive is something most modern car makers fail to think about. Something about that classic drive was totally different. Wish I could just leave this time period and go back in time.

  • The head gasket issue was because Toyota torqued the head to 45lbft of torque from the factory. The torque specs from the factory in fact was the reason for head gasket failure WITHOUT increasing boost under modification. Just an FYI from a MKIII owner since 1990. I still own one.

The old 7mge did have a rod knock. The Cressida body sadly rusted out after owning it after 10 years. The soul of the 7mgte went into a Volvo 240 wagon. Still doing some fine tunning and and some sensors replaced and a rebalanced driveshaft,but is fun to drive and to see the faces of the people when they see the sleeper leave them in the dust.

  • Great video Miguel. A few things off are the weights you quoted. There are a few per hundred pounds lighter for a Targa auto turbo. Also, if you want your R154 The shift superbly. Use redline MT 90. As far as horsepower goes. The 7M block can handle 1200 hp reliably 1400 HP being the limit. This is crank horsepower. I have some ideas on how to go past 1400 hp if you have the money and inclination let me know.

    @georgehoneymen6045@georgehoneymen60454 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks George! I seen pictures of your car! VERY CLEAN! As far as weight goes, what years are you referring to? The later cars became heavier than earlier cars. A fully loaded car came with a Targa roof, air bag, a 10-speaker audio system w/ CD player and sub woofer, 8-way adjustable driver seat, etc. With a full tank of gas these cars are in fact 3800-3900... but like I said in the video, the earlier models and those with less options do weigh less and stripped out cars have been reaching sub 3000lbs numbers.

    • I seen what happens a lot with a 7M when it's putting out 1000 horses plus, a split down the right side of the block between #2 and #4 cylinder, I wouldn't push a 7M past 700hp, you want more than that, put a 2JZ in it

      @oveidasinclair982@oveidasinclair9824 жыл бұрын
    • Oveida Sinclair You mean a split down the left of the block. Both the JZ and the 7M do the same. Once you’re past 1400 crank horsepower on either block, this problem will show up depending on how much surface has been removed from the deck. It’s very common in JZ‘s as well. Another common problem is the cracking in the bore of cylinder one on both blocks.
