I would like to see a comparison of 7mm PRC VS 6.8 Western.
7PRC blows it away. Better BC bullets at higher velocity. This will kill the 6.8 western if it wasn’t already dead.

I think this is going to be the nail in the coffin for 6.8 western. Hornady just knows how to bring out the new cartridges these days. I'm still excited about the 308 hunting rifle I just ordered, but the 7mm PRC look amazing for long range applications. Thanks for all the information. I’d certainly rather have the 6.8 western, functionally speaking. Shorter action, less recoil, and similarly great BC bullets. However, given it’s a Hornady round, I’m sure the 7 PRC will be more popular than the 6.8.
@@phild9813 Yeah, The 6.8 western looks like a really good round, but it seems to take a lot of marketing and industry connections to get another new cartridge off the ground with so many choices to pick from.

For hand-loaders, shooting the Berger 170gr EOL from the 6.8 Western is the closest you will get to 7mm PRC. COL for that 170gr EOL is 2.940” in Hodgdon’s data. 6.8 Western with 170gr EOL is very impressive for LR hunting or steel. At 21.4” Hg barometric pressure up in the mountains (where elk actually are), using G7 drag model, you’re looking at: 6.8 Western 170gr EOL 2900fps 21.4” Hg barometro pressure/59˚F 800yds 2105fps 1672ft-lbs 4.7 mils drop .9 mils drift! 1000yds 1927fps 1402ft-lbs 6.5 mils drop 1.2 mils drift 7mm PRC 180gr Berger Hunting VLD 2950fps same conditions 800yds 2160fps 1864ft-lbs 4.5 mils drop .8 mils drift 1000yds 1983fps 1571ft-lbs 6.2 mils drop 1.1 mils drift Big thing with that is how much a short action is important to you, as well as brass availability/quality. XLR AI mags will do 2.950” COL, so 6.8 Western/170 EOL will work in that set-up. 7mm PRC requires a longer action. Another option would be 7mm Sherman Short Magnum, which duplicates 7mm PRC performance but from a short action case. Uses a 40˚ shoulder I think. 7mm PRC improved 40 would add at least 50fps and increase throat life.
I think the 6.8 still hangs fairly well with this. plus less recoil and a short action. hard to beat that round for 400 or 500 yard hunting.

I'm really looking forward to shooting these rifles, particularly the lighter version. I've used the 7mm Remington Magnum a fair bit and this 7 PRC looks really good for most of the hunting I do.

I would have liked comparison to 7mm mag and 28 nosler rather than the other prc variants. I’m pushing a Berger 180 out of my NRG custom 7mm Rem Mag with a 1:8 twist at 3000fps now. So don’t see a reason to switch just yet. Hopefully with a bit of time some good comparisons will be made
Point being, the guy buying this is likely currently shooting a 7 Rem Mag or 300 wm.

I’m very lucky. I bought a 7 RM in a Thompson Compass before they went away. My best groups are with the 175 Nosler ABLR. 4/10s of an inch at 100 is the norm. I’m good.
I've been waiting for this day to come. Unfortunately it's still going to be a long time before I can buy a rifle chambered in 7PRC. Hopefully a Springfield waypoint or browning xbolt :)

I agree shiftlock. I never understand comparing the same/similar bullet weights for different calibers. I would think you would go heavy for caliber on both. Or light for caliber. A cartridges ability to handle heavier bullets is a major factor
@@masone4589 that comparison would have made 300WM look worse, not better. 220's are so long that to seat them according to saami spec you're sacrificing powder capacity. That's exactly where the 7mm and the 300PRC shine, they are designed from the ground up to function at ideal performance with those long heavy bullets. Yes, you can seat long bullet out further and get similar performance, but then you have to at the very least have a barrel with a custom throat, and may have to change to longer magazines and magwell to hold those cartridges. These cartridges are designed to do what custom .300WM and 7mag rifles can do at the top of their game, but in a factory rifle. *Also adding that this is using factory ammo, which has to abide by saami spec so factories don't load 220's in 300WM, that's a handloader's game.

@gavintoobe Gavin, would you consider doing a barrel cut-down test on an inexpensive 7mm PRC barrel? Perhaps take a 28", and cut it down inch by inch to 16", recording chronograph data along the way.

Gavin great video! I hunt and shoot PRS with a 7 SAUM, I hunt with 160g bullets and compete with 183g bullet. Both hammer and run great in a short action. I’d love to see a comparison of the 7PRC, 7WSM, 7SAUM, 280AI and 6.8 Western, I think these calibers for hand loading hunters would be a really interesting study.
I think the prc has the chance to edge out the venerable saum, time will tell. The wsm geometry and capacity just doesn't seems result in easily reliable accuracy. The 7prc will definitely stand above the 6.8 Western. Their answer to the gap between the 6.5 and 300 is about exactly where I was headed after playing with my .270prc, I think it's gonna be a close to ideal efficient cartridge.
I was thinking the very same thing as this video was running. some great stuff happening with those cartridges. box feed with center alignment works, but I'd guess these prs cartridges are center lined as well. the only drawback is you shop for one of these cartridges you can' necessarily find the one you want in rifle model you want.

After looking at and comparing the data on a few of other magnum calibers Im amazed at the effective range of the 7mm PRC...well over 900 yards and a few report over 1000... I love my 280 Ackley but this gun has my attention....Great info in you video...I m hitting the subscribe button. thanks
Good presentation, I understand you being out in front of everything new and I respect that. Manufactures have figured it out a long time ago to hype every new cartridge. 7PRC probably is good, but only the test of time will tell. It's still a long action. The questions I would ask before I purchased one are is the ammo cheaper than 7MAG, barrel life REALLY any better than the 2000 rounds I'm getting out of the 7MAG, what is the cost compared to 7MAG to reload, and finally how readily available is ammo and components when I need it.

My under 400 yds hunting rifle is a 7mm-08….been looking at 7mm RM for 400+ yds shots….might have to consider the 7mm PRC now, thanks for the info.

Super interested in 7mm PRC. I'd love to start with a Bergara action as well. If the B14 Wilderness series is chambered in 7mm PRC I would add a Wilderness Ridge to my safe and use it for dual purpose long range plate-smasher and deer/elk round.
I was pushing the 225 eldms at 3050fps with h1000 and lapua brass from my 30in savage 110 elite precision. That load hammered out to 2000 yards!

fairly impressive, you should build a 26" barrel with the MDT and give every spec of the custom build. I am interested in building one of these for both target and hunting applications. 26" is about all you want to drag out hunting. Way more accurate than I was expecting which is awesome.
Great job on the cerakote on the rifle. Maybe you can talk about options to camo out a scope. Currently I use camo wraps. Is ceracoke a valid clean looking option for scopes?
Great video, and very thorough for those of us who appreciate your hard work and the great information. I assume you left out the 270 Winchester since it is close to the .30-06. Now for the ticklish question - for those of us lefties, will ANYONE produce this in a left-handed model or must we go the custom route? And for the customs, who would you recommend as a supplier(s) for the LH receiver for a build? Thx in advance.

This seems to be a better "middle ground" between the standard short action cartridges (.308/6.5 CM case) and the 300 PRC than the 6.5 PRC. In my opinion, the 6.5 PRC didn't offer enough of a performance advantage over the 6.5 CM to warrant the trouble (mag face bolt face, special magazines) and expense of ammo for the same bullet weights. Excited to see how the 7mm PRC is received.
Good info. Will be interested to see some results with some other powders that aren't so slow-burning as Retumbo for bullets that light, especially out of that shorter barrel. Impressive groups for factory ammo. Curious what your CBTO was for the handloads vs the factory...? In other words, how much more jump was there in the factory, or did you load them nearly the same length?
Since it was sammi approved I’ve been enamored with it. I bought a 300 WP tikka t3x as a stop gap for hunting. I’m very excited to try it out!

It'll be a while before guns and ammo are available in enough quantities to make it practical for me. I just bought a 6.5 PRC for hunting, and still feel like it's still getting its legs as far as availability is concerned.

It looks like a great addition to the PRC line. Is it an entirely new case? Can brass be made from any existing stock? I'm thinking it cant. If that is the case I will wait a few years and see if it takes off. I already have a 6.5C, and a 6.5PRC that is a bit hard to find ammo/brass. I'm in the Midwest so I am more exited about 8.6BLK and .375 Raptor for hunting hogs, bear and such. These calibers use existing 6.5C or .308 brass and are more geared for hunting in brush, and trees and such as we have here. They both are subsonic or supersonic and approximately 2000ftlbs of energy at 300yds for Raptor.

Gavin, curious to know/see, @12:24 you show a drop graph, with the 300prc having dropped the most... but that's with a 225Gr ELDM... what barrel length was that 2800fps out of, and whats your data looking like for a 250gr A-tip? As I understand it should drop allot less and maintain velocity allot further. if your barrel can push it (longer barrel)
The SAAMI release for this cartridge is useful to a point. As a match competitor, there are limits at this early stage... limited virgin brass, limited standard or competition dies, etc. For hunters that buy < 100 factory loaded rounds it is certainly of interest. For competition it may take a while for Lapua, Peterson, Starline, Redding, Forster to catch up (feels like the 6mm Dasher story). Whidden appears ahead of the curve... whatever curve that becomes. Thanks for sharing.
There's a good chance the manufacturers are seeing the immediate (actually legitimate this time) enthusiasm for this one just as much as I see it and will respond accordingly...otherwise they are leaving money on the table. I mean I HOPE they don't pull a Remington haha...

@@hotramen5952 yes, clearly this cartridge is not for most folks. Just ignore it, no need to waste a second of time typing or thinking about it. It does nothing the 7 mag wont do with regards to the kind of shooting most hunters do. This is meant for people who target shoot/ hunt at 600 yards+ since its only reason for being is hurling long and heavy for caliber, high ballistic coefficient bullets out past ranges average riflemen wouldnt shoot, at accuracy levels they don't care about. Its all about the rifling twist available from a factory rifle. Also, the lack of belt means you'll likely get more reloads out of your brass. For thos who dont reload, that is pointless. I'm suprised this was even necessary to bring up but I get rhe interest level-after looking at it some more, I wish they had given it just a little more powder capacity so it had a bit of a speed advantage over the 7 mm Rm. Guess everybody's afraid to create a 'barrel burner'.
I will build a 7mm PRC. I have a 6.5PRC and love it. I always wanted just a little more bullet weight for larger game. I’m thinking a light weight hunter, 22” barrel with suppressor.
I have a Remington magnum action I think that this may be now on my list to convert to from the 7mm STW barrel it has now. Has the mag capacity for 3.6" cartridges which would be ideal.
Excellent summary. The barrel counter on the 22" configuration, is it a 3B?

I already have a Howa 6.5 creedmoor, it has been very accurate! Getting towards the end of the barrel life I'm thinking of getting the Howa 1500 300prc barrel and putting it on my chassis.

Great presentation as always. One suggestion: how about a quick mention of 300 and 400 yard trajectory? That would make things more real and more relatable for most shooters, since that is a sane limit for hunting ranges. I have no need for something quite so powerful, but my recent reasearch has led me to conclude that i want a 6.5 PRC. I don't really hunt, but maybe i will. The 6.5 will give me some versatility (pronghorn up theough elk, and of course pigs) and good trajectory, with modest recoil. No interest in the Creedmoor, but i would love a 6.5x55, esp a Tikka. I like the Boyd's stock on the Bergara. Is than an adjustable LOP, a recoil reducing device, or both? Bedding? Bedding block? Pillar bedded? Need a little more detail.
I have a Bergara Premier action in 300PRC with a Bartlien 5R 28in bbl pushing 230 Atips at 2930 fps with no pressure signs whatsoever. Which is about 227 inches of drop @1000yds. So I suppose if tweaked the 7mm would still fair well against the 300PRC.Both should work well for ELR, thanks for the video!
This cartridge is blowing up online today! I would say 7mm seems to be teetering on most optimal caliber for general short action performance. I’m glad to see that the 7PRC is compatible with standard length/long actions. I see it as a versatile round, but not a high volume shooting platform because of the magnum nature. It would seem perfect for a prone shooting environment. Thanks for the coverage!

Great news and a great cartridge. That will definitely be a long distance performer. Here is my issue having a 7mm SAUM and a 7mm Mag. Our brass is not found anymore and our investment in dies, reamers etc. Is getting waisted. I probably can do just about anything hunting against that the 7mm PRC with a 7mm Mag or a 7mm Shooting Times Westerner, or 7mm Weatherby. Make sure I have ample supply of 7mm Mag brass I might consider a PRC. I would rather have two rifles I can shoot instead of one that sits in the safe.
Very good review (as ususal) for the 7MM PRC. If I was looking for a good long range rifle beyond my 7mm Win Mag, I would consider this one. I have looked at all the other so called long range calibers and to date, none have impressed me enough to use them/move outside the 'tranditional' calibers. I hunt and do target shooting for practice at the local ranges (the longest I have access to is 300 yards). I have several calibers to pick from depending on what I am hunting or what I want to do at the range, 270 Win (a Browing AB3 and a Weatherby Vangaurd First Lite), Lee Enfield Nr 5 Mk1 .303 British, Browning 7mm Win Mag and Tikka .308 Win. Two rifles, the Enfield and Browning AB3 270 Win, have been upgraded with after market stocks. For the most part, where I hunt here in Canada, most shots are relatively short, maybe out to 200 yards.

I know Hornady isn't going to show any love to the 6.8 western but it's ballistics seem very interesting in a WSM style cartridge. Ever plan on a video for reloading?

I really appreciate your video. I like the sound of the 7 prc as a well rounded hunting rifle . However I don’t understand why Bergara doesn’t put 26 inch barrels on the 7 prc. At least I have not seen it . I also don’t think I’ve seen a video where shooters are hitting the 3000fps mark advertised on the Hornady ammo boxes . Maybe I’m overthinking it . I know you did a video with the Bergara squared crest . I really like that rifle just wondering about the 22 inch barrels though. Seems kind of like putting a governor on a Ferrari to reduce speed .
A 7 PRC will be my next hunting rifle. I’d really love a Bergara Mountain 3.0 with their CURE carbon barrel in this cartridge.

I recently had a custom 7mm Rem Mag built. It's got a 30" 1:8 Brux barrel and I'm interested to see how my results there compare with the 7PRC. I like the fact the 7PRC doesn't have a belt and instead has the increased case capacity. Frankly it's amazing no one took this route earlier on. Shoulder back, allow for long bullets, specify the faster twist. I think efforts in the 7 short / ultra magnums were likely intended to be close.
The 7mm Remington Magnum really shines with the longer barrels. I bet your rifle is flat out amazing with the heavier bullets. The Rem mag has a little more capacity than the PRC and can usually be loaded a little more than the manuals indicate. In the shorter barrels the PRC will be a little more efficient.

Of course Hornady finally comes out with the 7 PRC when I finally competed my 7mm Sherman Short Mag build (took about a year). This is going to be a huge hit with mountain hunters for sure. I keep saying, a 7mm 180 gr projectile going 3000 fps is bad news for anything in North America.
Hey Gavin, has Hornady done anything to address the PRC clicker issue with thicker brass such as ADG and Lapua?
I built a 7-300 prc it has been a very accurate round 180 gr at 3290 velocity. I believe that the prc cases are very well designed and make a wonderful platform for a wildcat round.
Loos like you’re beating 7mm RUM even with that. Did you use a 30˚ or 40˚ shoulder? I think a 40˚ shoulder with these would really be optimum, but requires forming.
@@LRRPFco52 I used the 30 degree just necked it down. Im using H 1000 .I have a friend that has the 7mm rum and with the right powder it will do 3400 with 180 gr.
I'm a .308 shooter after going through 30-06, 300WM, 7mmRM, 7-08, etc. I have no desire to replace my .308s, but I have been wanting to add something with better long range capability. 6.5 Creed has become that somewhat, but I wanted to stay with a cartridge able to push heavier weights. 6.5 PRC wasn't there and 300 PRC is cool, but just too big. After coming across Vortex's PRC video I was intrigued about the 7mm PRC. It can carry .308 weight projectiles with better velocity, better trajectory, and maintain precision at longer ranges. Your video went into more detail and answered more of my questions about the round. I'll be watching for more content here on the 7 PRC as time goes on. Hopefully it will make enough impact for more rifle/ammunition manufacturers to add it to their line up. Thanks for some great information!
How do I sign up to get a re -barrel to 7mm PRC? I have a donor action already. I use Bartlein barrels in my comp rifles as straight from Bartlein there is no break-in period just go and shoot! Their barrel’s are excellent!

I think the 7 PRC is going to be good for someone like me who doesn’t own anything bigger than a 30-06 and wants to invest in a 7mm magnum class caliber someday. My only current 7 mm caliber rifles are chambered in 7-08. I can’t see it being practical for others who already have heavy hitter 7’s to swap over. I’m worried about components availability for the next few years.

I like the 7mm and 6.8mm bullets. I have been experimenting with the 7 Rem Mag for several years. My next rifle is going to be a .270 Winchester, I see a bright future for the .277 bullets as well as .284.
Have you ever shot a 280 AI? It’s my understanding that the 7prc and the 280A is about the same.
@@RobbieBobbie98 No -- I have never shot the 280AI. I have about 600 once fired brass cases of 30-06 and 270 Win that I could convert to 280 AI. I think the 7mm PRC is even a little faster than the the 7mm Rem Mag. I like the 280AI and 270 Win. , the advantage of the .270 is the huge rifle selection.
Just curious - Why didn’t you shoot both 7mm RemMag and 7PRC with the same weight bullet for your comparison?
Question Gavin, after watching you set up this 7prc, you have convinced me it is the cartridge of the future, when selecting the CIP 3.850 load port. Did you have to do anything to the HR action to fit the chassis and magazine?

I didn't catch it in the video, only from seeing you shoot both rifles through the chrono. Are the 22 inch barrel velocities without a suppressor, and the 28 inch with a suppressor?
Interesting program Gavin! It's like the short mags of 2000s are going into their second or third generations. It would have been nice to add the 7 WSM to the comparison. These cartridges were always nice as they were made for short actions and were very easy on recoil. The 7 PRC should be just a little heavier on recoil but with a muzzle brake very manageable unlike the old magnums from the past.

You can easily push the bullet out on a 7 WSM especially if you have a Tikka as they are long action and have the free-bore to allow it. I have done this with my 270 WSM it's a 1km tack driver with 170 Gr bergers. Yes, agree it would be good to have a comparison.

I wonder how a custom 7prc will compare to a custom chamber 280 Ackley improved? Exactly was given a modern twist rate and I may say this wrong but more free bore or throat so you can load the bullet out longer in the neck and longer bullets. I know on my next rifle build 7 mm is probably going to be the choice if I don't go 30 cal. I want something with high BC bullets that would make me perfect Target / sniper I mean big game rifle at extended Target ranges
What magazine are you using in the freedom build? I just picked up a R700 7mm prc and would like to convert to detachable mags.
I’m looking at building one with a carbon fiber barrel and putting it in the MDT HNT26 chassis.
I think the 7prc is a great cartridge. The reality is I have a 7rem mag shooting 175 Gr Nosler ABLR at 2845 fps in sub moa groups. The 7prc isn’t really answering enough questions to switch. But I hand load. I think for an out of the box everyone can go shoot it, 7 prc is great. On another subject, do some ballistic tests on some Nosler ABLR’s. Nosler says they will perform at 1300 fps? Unless your sponsored by Hornady😊.
I want to see how it stacks up to 280AI. Felt weird you didn't include it in the comparison.
I have a 7mm saum ackley that I think is as good but what do you think Gavin I shoot a 180g Lapua at 2940fps, I know I need to fire form but so far it’s doing ok 👍

I’ve learned my lesson jumping into a new round with 6mm ARC. Hornady doesn’t produce hardly any ammo or virgin brass for that and now they introduce a new round? Until someone besides Hornady makes ammo for 7 PRC, I would wait.
Good advice with any new calibre, buy enough components to wear out the barrel. If it doesn't take off you still get full use from it and then have to rebarrel anyway.
One thing that will be interesting to learn is the barrel life. At 3,000 fps, it is screeching fast out of the muzzle.
Yeah. 3k. I love it. This comes up EVERY time a nice cartridge comes out. Barrel burning and recoil. I wish we could have just a few good cartridges that actually become mainstream (read: available) where people could just be happy with that extra horsepower and not whine about the shorter barrel life and extra recoil. I'd be happy as a pig in **** if I could find enough retumbo or h1000 to burn up a 7PRC barrel.
