Having a passion for cologne is not wrong, but the simple point is: if you’re ugly, cologne is not gonna save you. If you are attractive, you’re gonna smell good whether you wear Erba Pura or Red Tobacco

Of course many people buy them for the hope that it will make them a bit more attractive, it will add another aspect to your attractiveness, but nobody expects to suddenly get laid because they got a better smelling fragrance. And I'm not even going to start about people who buy niche fragrances for themselves, who like collecting them and who don't really even care what others think. Of course you'd like your fragrance to have the bonus benefit of attracting people, but that's just one of the many reasons people buy them.

  • Your sense of smell is your voice in silence. Fragrances makes you more appealing and boosts your confidence and elevates your overall appeal. It doesn’t matter the advert they put on this, the question is, how do you feel when you wear your favorite fragrance and how does it impact on the people around you. Thats all that matters. Buy what you can afford and enjoy the hubby.

  • This was my take on the video a couple of weeks back, mate..... "Yo. Dude. We had teenagers dropping hundreds on Air Jordans years ago to be more like Mike.... Several industries sell you a dream. Cosmetics can't make you more beautiful, they just mask "imperfections", much like fragrances do. Clothing companies charge high amounts for items of clothing that won't make you look more amazing but people feel more confident owning those garments. The car industry shows you that owning one of their vehicles will open the world to you, in several ways. That's marketing. As for the smelly stuff, I'll admit I own a lot of fragrances. Do I buy them because of advertising? Nope. I buy what I want because it smells nice and I enjoy smelling nice. Choosing a smelly for the day is like choosing a shirt or a pair of trousers: What's the weather, what am I doing today, what sort of mood am I in, who's going to be around me today...? Certain smells make me feel happy, some make me feel mentally stronger, some make me feel sexy, some make me feel positive when I know the day is going to be tough. It's not down to advertising, it's down to the smells and the way I perceive them. I also work in hospitality, so around a lot of people, and I like to know that I don't smell like armpits by the end of a shift. I also have several colleagues who appreciate the way I smell. And I won't lie, it's nice to have a female colleague come and give you a hug purely because she wants to smell you a bit more or one of them tells you smell amazing. Has a fragrance got me a leg over solely on its own? Nope, but a fair few of them have certainly helped over the years ;)"

Anybody with any kind of sense knows these ads are over-the top! I agree that the fragrance industry is very manipulative. Ultimately you choose to buy a product or not. They can be used to leave a lasting impression whether that's on a date, a job interview or to remember a special day or event in your life like getting married. The mistake people make is thinking wearing a fragrance will help compensate for the areas they lack in instead of working on themself as a person

He's always been against massive waste and it's not exclusive to the fragrance industry, so this video is on brand with his personal value. His message is catered to the masses and not enthusiasts such as the people from this lovely channel, hence his focus on all the weird ads and "getting laid" scents. People who know scents understand that those are marketing BS. Love your humility in admitting that the fragrance industry isn't perfect. • As I get older I find that, as my hearing and vision have deteriorated, my sense of smell has become more important to me (and I'm certainly not running after sex any more). The whole business of a person's perfume has changed radically in my lifetime: it used to be that everyone found something they liked & stuck with it. My mother always smelled of Yardley's English Lavender; my grandmother of 4711 (I'm sure it doesn't smell the same today - perhaps because they took the nasties out of the bergamot); my grandfather wore Old Spice; and, as a boy, I would only smell of that fougere that the barber sprayed over you after a haircut (they must have bought industrial size tankers of it!). These days half the perfumes cease to exist after just a couple of years (especially celebrity endorsed stuff) so they couldn't be anyone's signature fragrance. Many of the perfumes are just minor modifications on basic themes that you come across so often they get boring (calone & dihydromyrcenol cocktail anyone?) And the adverts are astoundingly stupid. Everything has to be NEW to help feed the money making machine. There's just no consistency, at least not in the larger brands. I say wear what you like - I don't even understand why we have men's & women's perfumes. Does a gay guy wear women's perfume to attract a man? Does a gay woman wear men's perfume to attract a woman? It's all nonsense! Here in the west we think of rose as feminine, but in eastern countries it's used mainly by men. A Victorian gentleman's macassar oil contained ylang-ylang which is now thought to be feminine. I'll wear whatever I like the smell of. I do agree that you shouldn't overdo it. I had the unfortunate experience of sitting on a bus next to a woman who seemed to be wearing neat jasmine sambac oil (I'm not too keen on jasmine at the best of times) by the time she got off I was feeling quite nauseous!

  • Fragrance is a luxury product in the sense of luxury meaning "not a necessity". But then most things aren't necessary. We acquire them because we think that they'll add to the quality of our lives. Perhaps teenagers think that scents can get them sex, but most of us know that, at best, if we smell nice, people won't mind spending time around us. So we choose scents that we like because we think that other people will like them too. In that way, scent is an expression of our taste and thus gives others some idea of who we are as individuals. And we are drawn to certain brands because they have high status. I'll probably never own a Dior suit or shirt, but I have two Dior fragrances. In wearing them, I feel that a little of the cachet of the house rubs off on me. Even if nobody else recognises them, I know that I'm wearing Dior. I have some Guerlain, but I think that a lot of people will recognise that name if they ask what I'm wearing. I also have ELDO's "Hermann..." but I don't think that anyone I know has heard of the house or the fragrance. It's a private pleasure. I think that the video-maker misunderstands (or poses as misunderstanding) why most people buy scents. Perhaps he's just not that interested or doesn't have a great sense of smell. He probably spends a lot of money on other things, such as all the technology he needs to make his videos (sorry, Omar!). And if teenagers are spending money on designer or niche fragrances, isn't it better than them spending it on booze or drugs?

I honestly don't care at all how a fragrance is marketed, I don't see it anyway. I care about the characteristics. It would be interesting to see a fragrance commercial made like a toilet cleaner or air freshener commercial. Those items do mention what it smells like, how long it lasts, practical information, instead of Leonardo Dicaprio half naked on a beach looking cool with the voice over whispering: Mr Clean, by Proctor and Gamble

Just like what clothes we are wearing, we are conscious about our hairstyle, our furniture at home, the books on our shelves, the music we listen to - in short, we want to show who we are. It’s IMO totally legitimate. The guy can be right about how ridiculous marketing works in order to make us buy stuff (we don’t need), and you can laugh of all the silly commercials, and that we are stupid enough to think 99,99 is a better offer than 100. But using fragrances is in its own right is totally as ok as all the other things we do to express ourselves. School of Scent is actually a serious and trustworthy channel, which analyses and reviews the fragrances without a commercial purpose. Thank You.

  • It was a good video. Regardless if everything wasn't accurate. It shows how outsiders looking in view the hobby and industry. Most marketing and advertising is bullshit no matter what it is. Excessive consumerism is just a way to fill the hole of loneliness. Fragrance collecting is fun but some take it way too seriously.

  • I love perfumes just cause they add something on top of what i am not a substitute for who i am. The approach of the guy seems to be that all the audiences are the same, people that do things cause on what Jeremy says or a brand is marketing not cause their personal preference. For some extent this may be true ( remembering mask mandate) but there are exceptions.

  • How about instead of a visual marketing budget fragrance houses bring back samples instead. Very few places ever give out samples anymore. Smelling something on paper is one thing but spraying on skin makes a world of difference. Whenever I visit the mall I spray only one fragrance because some fragrances smell different in the air than at close range. If I wanted to test the fragrances I’m interested in it would take far too many trips to the mall. Ok well what about sites that sell decants, great…except they have a limited selection…and most of what they have is only the most popular designer stuff. Bring back samples!

Good job Sherlock Smh if this is the level of knowledge and insight in those videos and people actually form an opinion based on them, than that channel is more of a fucking scam

  • This Levi dude used to do better videos. I’m very surprised you agreed to the majority of his statements. I think it was pretty narrow minded of him to analyze the entire fragrance world based on designer’s advertisement campaigns. I would have have respected more his opinions if he had focused on the the anatomical and biological limitations we most humans have in our nose and brains to distinguish scent molecules…but he focused on sex, desire, models, etc. When I talk to friends, family and fragrance enthusiasts, I never focus on whether a scent got me laid or not; I focus on why I like certain notes or accords, cost/quality or bottle presentations.

  • The opinions of Jeremy or any other fragrance/cologne reviewer do not influence what cologne I buy. I have enough experience with fragrances to know what I like. When I smell a cologne if I like it and it is within my range of disposable income, I will buy it. But I am NOT going to break the bank to purchase a cologne.

  • It's funny, several years ago a fragrance newbie seeing Jeremy would be a *very, very* different experience from a fragrance newbie seeing Jeremy now. In the case of the former, they'd walk away from the video thinking "okay, I need to get my hands on La Nuit and Individuel." In the case of the latter they walk away from the video thinking "It's been a while since I did cocaine."

  • Well, I really like perfume, but I can't disagree with this guy. He actually said everything right about sex-centered, weird cosmetic advertisements. 100% agree. I am personally extremely annoyed with all these celebrity advertisements and with these horribly stupid descriptions even more. This "Hero" description - oh my lord.... . Common, this is actually a very simple Ambrox scent..., keep calm people hahah. A scent won't make a human being a God. 16:55 well, Omar I am here with you too. xD

  • Most of the products this guy reviews can be subjected to testing and empirical analysis, like when he did a video on the water bottle craze. For this one he is way out of his depth. Maybe his next exposé will be about how fine wine is really nothing more than hyped grape juice, and that the only reason people drink it is to get drunk. I also think that nobody who watches School of Scent is the kind of collector who is swayed even a little by the advertising.

  • This person got millions of views and a lot of money being a nay sayer.. The reality is that men and women are attracted to each other for many reasons and being clean is probably one of them. Most reasons for wearing cologne since wine and sandalwood is to be at peace and calm and in some cases closer to a high power of well-being. Cologne is fun and can be part of the wardrobe and be attractive but most understand that if cologne is all that a person has in getting a date then there is a problem. On the companies side it was once said that if Elizabeth Taylor put glitter on poo and endorsed it, it would sell.
