The Khaki colour indicates use in Egypt and Sinai, with eventual use in Palestine... Whilst the Hedjaz railway ( Damascus- Medina) was Metre gauge ( under Ottomans ) the lines in Egypt were Standard Gauge. As Occupation of Palestine occurred ( late 1917-1918), the ROD would have expanded services to Gaza etc. In WWII, ROD 8F locos were used in Egypt and Mandate Palestine, with one preserved in Israel.
One was returned to a railway in scotland
No this loco is painted in incorrectly. It was sent to France and only black and grey locos were used in France by the ROD.
Although, it was the WD (War Department) not the ROD (Railway Operating Division) in the 2nd World War.
@denR Correct
It's painted as the original is preserved though...
5322 is one of the preserved moguls, and at some point it did carry this livery in preservation. Unfortunately, this means that high quality color photos exist of what this engine should look like and the color of the model appears to be far too light, and it should be the same as the city class or the dean goods.
Maybe this carries an earlier version of that livery?
I know right. I was really excited for this model but ultimately I never picked it up because the livery just doesn’t match the one it’s based on. The pictures taken on the Didcot railway clearly show a darker shade of khaki, and even in the sun the loco isn’t as bright as the models colour.
Dapol have previously struggled with livery colours (at least in N gauge in my experience). That’s not to say if this is wrong or intended to portray the preserved example, but Dapol do have a history of questionable colour choices.
I agree this is probably too light, but the British Army do have a history of many, many colours under the "khaki" banner. This one, for example, could be considered Light Stone or Portland Stone.
The livery is Desert Sand for operation in Egypt and Mesopotamia.
The word 'Khaki' is a word of Urdu origin, which means 'Soil coloured', or occasionally 'Dust'. Khaki colour ranges from yellowish, to darkish green.
Great to see the improvements, very tempted to get one now
As to the Khaki livery, when I joined the USAF in 1970 khaki was still a viable non-fatigue uniform, though blue would replace khaki as a dress uniform within not too many years. This loco's shade of khaki, while not a perfect match, is quite similar to what I wore back then. It is certainly far closer to "my" khaki than the much darker model you compare it to, which doesn't look khaki at all to me.
"khaki" is from an Urdu word often translated as "dust", so it depends on what colour your dust is :P But people calling an olive-green "khaki" does make me wonder what toxic chemicals are in their "dust" :P
Absolutely love this one! Beautiful model
Awesome video well done Sam plus that's a good looking GWR mogul
What a fabulous model. Well done Dapol!
Pretty good deal there Sam, and a very fair review. She's very impressive. The intricate interior cab detailing of British models is really something else. Pity about the gold paint not always being applied sharply but this can be forgiven. For DCC sound there seems to be quite the disadvantage of putting the speaker on the stick in the 'boiler'..., size. For quality sound, a beefy speaker really is needed which wouldn't fit as is. The tender would be the best place (not that we are into sound though). However, overall, a well good loco for the money Sam. Especially the performance and speed controls are just far and beyond astonishing. Just wow! Cheerio,
Indeed impressive already on DC. DCC will bring out even more of what this fine locomotive has in the boiler. Fine and objective review. One to put on the wish list. Well done Sam !
I can't wait for Martin-Mart-Mart-Martinson to release their 1:1 model of the rerelease of the Dapol 43xx.... Lel, in all seriousness though excellent review as always. Look forward to the next one.
hahaha now there's an idea xD Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, Nice to see we share the same taste in Moguls! The livery is very accurate, as I rode on one of these locos at the Swindon & Cricklade Rly in the ROD livery. How it would be in WW1 though is a different matter. Keep up the great work! Boa Films
I like this one! I have a first batch in shirtbutton livery and I love it. Sorely tempted but waiting for Rapido & Accurascale locos on pre-order so can't really justify another one. Great review as always Sam, of what I think is a great value and high quality model. Cheers!
Awesome video today Sam really beautiful modle I’m gonna get one
I wanted one of these in the first batch, but was put off by the performance. Great to see Dapol take feedback on board. I'm going to ask for one for my Birthday next week. Thanks a lot Sam!
Hi Sam nice review ,I swap alot of diecast planes from my good friend Stuart for the lovely bachman first world war ambulance train set and its one of the best trains set I ever had 😊
Awesome video Sam's trains 😊
Thanks Brian!
@@SamsTrains you're welcome Sam's trains
My favourite locomotives on your channel: The ROD Dean Gods, the ROD N7, both from Oxford Rails and this Dapol model.
I think that's really nice and priced well too
Very beautiful. I still have to make my video. So be sure to keep a close eye on it. So it looks so cool this time. Love it. Keep being awesome my friend
Hi Sam, I have one of the previous batch and it runs well. I think it is because it is a DCC factory sound version and some clever tweaks to the CVs were done at the factory. In terms of value, the DCC factory sound fitted version of the new ones (I have one on order) are even better. I paid 258 quid for mine and when you bear in mind if you fit DCC sound yourself (a decoder plus 2 speakers) it will cost you somewhat more than Dapol are charging. Worth a mention....
Glad to see having to cancel my 2020 pre-order wasn't a bad thing in the end. I went dcc sound on it and now am even more stoked
Hi Sam. Delighted with your review and technical comparison with the earlier version. Last August, when praise for the Dapol and Accurascale Manors was at near fever pitch, I decided to pass those by and pre-order one of these instead. One of my very, very few pre-1968 memories of steam on the main line was of waiting on Gloucester (Central) platform and seeing a loco bringing my Gran from Hereford. Moguls used to haul those trains, so I went for the BR late crest 5330 which was briefly based at Gloucester in 1963/64 and might have been the very loco I remember. It’s a beautiful model at a great price.
Hello Sam, Lovely model and review!
Delighted for you sam one of your favourite locos turns out to be excellent the livery is not for me but the little loco itself is cool 👍
I must have been lucky with my first run 43 then... Thankfully mine runs like your new one. I am tempted by one mind, given that 5322 was painted up in desert sand in preservation.
I really love the GWR mogul Sam. I'll be absolutely get one of these for my layout, although I'll probably wait until the price come down just a little bit. Cheers Jasper & Willow
That sounds awesome! Yeah fingers crossed the price will come down before they sell out! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Agreed, although it’s cheaper than some, £154 is still a lot of money
Hey sam i love your shows every day, i live in Australia Have you heard that rapido are doing the s160 2-8-0 sometime this year
Ngl, I almost want to get this as my first model train. Thought I'd want the Manor more, but this is just too beautiful.
The Moguls are more useful - and MUCH more plentiful that the light 4-6-0.
A fair score I feel. I’m glad I’ve seen this as had a bad experience with the Large Prairie where it couldnt run over points without stalling or going dead and ended up trading for something else. I would be tempted to buy one of these :-)
Nobody does reviews better than you, Sam.
Hi Sam. I thought this was a near-perfect model. The livery is absolutely lovely, a beautiful rich cream that would complement GWR chocolate and cream passenger coaches. The loco is a WWI loco, yes, but who cares? I don't! Lol. I was seriously impressed with this model, very much so. One of your best Sam. Pete.
I would say the slightly glossy smokebox is accurate as this models a pristine freshly applied livery. For the price, quality and performance this is at least as good or better than accurascale’s manor. Great video as always 👍🏼
Nice review🎉
Thanks!
Looks like Martin MartMartinson has a new model to make a replica of! Also, I think that its better that manufacturers dont include speakers, as they are 100% of the time worse than aftermarket ones ad need to replaced if you want great sound (which is rather uncommon I will add). Thanks as always Sam.
Nice color. Mine, a GWR model, is a good model, I will pull her from storage to do some freight trains next weekend. The model by then was a good one. Great to see a good model made better, especially on the traction abilities and overall performances. So, Dapol, next model, a Collett goods ? I'm short of a GWR 0-6-0.
10.05 Smokeboxes always came out of the paint shop with the same varnished gloss finish as the boilers. However in service thery would get much hotter than the boilers -- sometimes even red-hot at the lower front as firebox ash piled up -- so they quickly lost the glossy appearance as the varnish burned off. As regards the 'khaki,' it seems there was never any standard specification for this colour or its application. Companies mixed up whatever they could get hold of under wartime conditions -- threy bought in the ingredients, not pre-manufactured paints -- and the War Department had its own ideas on what would be appropriate in the expected theatre of operations.
Yes never in France like that. It was black.
Kia ora Sam, another great loco review video and for my eyes this looks more khaki than the other one. Mind you could be the blue dress debate all over again. This will be controversial, and I do enjoy your channel because we don't get Squarespace or Nord VPN adverts halfway through. But (wait for it) if you were able to get more revenue by doing those adverts in a Sam's Trains style I would still keep watching. Especially if the revenue gave you more ability to design, print and build your own models. For me these are your best videos and the improvement you've shown in such a short time is nothing less than phenomenal. Imagine having a crack at building an N Gauge model or O Gauge. Sorry to those that will hate this, just crossed my mind this morning and wonder what others think. Nga mihi nui, James
Hey Sam! Great video as always, and I have an idea for the next loco you should review! Hornby did a slight upgrade on the a3 again, with the new drawbar and is scaled slightly differently and more accurate! But, I like the model! The livery is very nice, even if it is a little inaccurate! Anyway, goodbye! Edit: I forgot to mention, but it also has a 21 pin DCC decoder compared to the old one.
Hey Sam, i saw your video with your "Uncle Fredrikson's Amazing Balancing Military Train" and really enjoyed how those couplings where made, is there any chance that you would share a file to them, as i am working on some coaches of my own, it's the DSB HIMS freight wagons from the danish Railroad, and i haven't yet found a solution to the coupling problem. That would save me from a lot of hours of work and headaches.
Wow this engine looks awesome 👍😊🤩😎😀🤞
Re the electroplated dome, this is something which divides opnion as some manufactures are on record saying it’s far too shiny and toy-like / real loco fittings were never like that in real life so they won’t be doing it but rivals taking a different view and using electroplating to give a highly polished effect.
Hi Sam I don't think there was a odd one out this time, but I did see a GWR star class, a GWR manor, and I think the 52xx. Hopefully I got them all right :) Cheers Jasper & Willow
Love British steam locomotives!
Dapol have done there homework, it's a little bright but has the yellow tinge. The other loco you showed was brown and not even olive drab which is also some times refer to as Khaki
Hi Sam, great review as always. This Khaki livery suits this GWR 43xx Mogul, and all in all seems like a good looking well performing locomotive. But those hand rails let it down. What a shame. Did they run out of wire at Dapol I wonder.
Dapol's GWR Mogul has really improved greatly which is a major step up when they first released it. The mechanism is much better geared than the first model and the details are impressive Sam. Overall, this model is really a major improvement when Dapol first released them back in 2020.
On Saturday I will finally have a Hornby ruston 88ds Ken Cooke!
Nice to see some improvements here and there. Really light livery, but like you said - it's looking really good and it stands out in a good way also. Great runner. Much better this time. Love the smooth acceleration. The cab details blew me away. The gauges are impossible for me. I love love love this one! Great video. Take care :)
A nice painted up Loco Sam 🙂🚂🚂🚂
"James the Khaki Engine" 😂 all jokes aside.. That is One of the Greatest OO Gauge Engines i Ever seen!
What's a 00 gauge 'train'? Sam was reviewing a locomotive!
@@paulcaswell2813 TECHNICALLY he was reviewing a "Khaki WW1 GWR Mogul"
@@shanestrains548Ha, ha, ha.
With these improvements I might be a bit more excited for the newer egg vans.
hi sam.i am glad to see dapol are really and truly improving their models and not go down the path of hornby or bachmann. well done dapol keep up the good work.
Hmm. Not keen on the ROD livery (which may be too light), but in green it looks superb! Nice one, Dapol - keep up the good work...
Khaki varied from company to company as most railway companies painted the locos before sending them out.
The ESU Loksound Nex18 chips come with a speaker, so Dapol skipping on the inclusion of one isn't too much of a hardship.
Khaki literally means dust-coloured. But become yellowish brown when the army adopted it for camouflage uniforms.
All locos on the layout (not including the 2 moguls) GWR Large Prairie GWR 52xx GWR Star class
Sam, on the live can you run the H1 with some teaks, thanks
I spotted the 2-8-0 tank engine, British Monarch, and (correct me if I'm wrong) Erlestoke Manor. Although I'm not a fan of the Khaki colour, what's not to love about God's Wonderful Railway?
Well spotted Kelly!
Lots of new models showing up lately, I wonder which ones Sam will review? The dapol top lights, the accurascale banana vans, the cavalex 56, the Hornby TTA (OO scale), the Bachmann 31. Which ones will we see?
Will you be reviewing the new Cavalex model, it seems to have loads of excellent reviews and the digital example seems particularly impressive, would be interesting to see a neutral review away from the main stream
I hadn't planned on it, but might look into it at some point - I've heard good things too! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I’m waiting for the day Dapol (and Heljan, and Hornby) start including a leaflet advertising their 300 page color catalog like Bachmann does. That way, modelers can pay for more useless tat and it’ll cause Sam to have another conniption fit and tear it up. This always makes my day. 😅
As far as I know that flyer ONLY comes with Bachmann’s North American products and anything bought from their UK ‘branchline’ or ‘Graham Farish’ range does not include such promotional material. As entertaining as Sam’s antics are, in reality he should take into account the fact that if you buy a North American model which has been produced for Bachmann USA / Canada it’s obvious any promotional material included won’t be relevant to a UK purchaser and stop making a fuss about it.
Lizzie when she finds out the model’s rating: A bloody excellent job if I do say so myself.
That livery is a close match, possibly a bit lighter, than the photo on Wikipedia of 5322 in preservation... But I would have said that it's sand, rather than khaki, which makes me wonder if it was intended for service in Palestine or Mesopotamia at one time... Cue a little figure representing T E Lawrence...!
Hi Sam I have a brand new Bachman class 158 but after an hour-2 hours it Seized up and now just shorts out the controller when I try it Do you have any idea what happened
Running slower is not necessarily a sign of weak magnets. Slower speed plus higher torque suggests the motors have either got more turns on them or, more likely, they improved the grade of the magnet in the motor. Stronger magnets will make the motor go slower for a given voltage, and give more torque.
One issue with original batch was tender derailed badly on my layout as it had no wieght. Shame this 1 hasnt made the tender heavier
Hey Sam, I just got a OO Flying Scotsman set and it doesn’t work. What should I do?
I have the oddest afinity for GWR locos in the khaki mustard/brown livery, most likely because of the City of Birmingham from the medical coach pack. There aren't really any wartime liveries I like since they were designed to be simple and practical, but somehow it works well on Great Western designs.
This isn't a war time livery. It's fake.
One of the Rare Dapol W
The colour of the loco could be related to the theatre of operation.
Being a Great Western lad myself I do like a GWR review, what do you think of the ROD livery Sam? Keep up the good work and hope are doing well! :)
Sam, is there a better buy link? Your amazon links simply do not work in the usa. Do you have a way to buy this from a UK merchant who ships to the USA? According to Amazon, it is unavailable. And amazon has pictured an old version, not this version. What do I search for to get this exact loco? Thank you
Very nice
Why do you use Fillament instead of just printing in resin? Wouldn’t it save time to get a smoother print?
11:23 Is it just me Sam or does the chimney look a little bit different than the GWR version. Cheers Jasper & Willow
One of my fave GWR locos Sam. Isn't there a 3rd preserved mogul, built from the vremains of a 2-6-2 prairie tank?
Yes there is. It was converted by the West Somerset Railway who decided that the limited coal and water capacity of the Small Prairie was going to significantly reduce the usefulness of the loco and noted that a significant amount of parts were shared across the two classes. That said there are still some significant differences between the conversion and the genuine 43XX locos so technically Sam is right to say only 2 43XX are preserved.
That's the one I had in mind. I wasn't aware of the differences between 9351 and the production version, but it's a fine loco nevertheless.
Do the 43xx and the dean goods have the same styled tenders
So cool
Thanks Justin! :D
I was really excited for this model when it first came out, but when the first production samples were released I was devastated. The livery looks like my Bachmann (WW2) WD 2-8-0 in desert sand livery. Nothing like a WW1 Khaki, and also nothing like the engine it was based on. If you look up pictures of 5332 at Didcot Railway Centre when it was painted into this khaki it’s considerably darker, to the point that even in the sunny pictures it’s not as light coloured as this model. It’s an amazing model detail wise but I just can’t get over the colour, I like it, but not on this engine. It needed to be darker and shinier to match the real life 5322. I have a glimmer of hope they might revisit this model and actually make a correct livery but knowing model railways the chances are slim at best. Maybe it could be fixed with masking tape and several layers of a clear dark coat but I don’t have the skills and would definitely ruin the engine. Suffice to say I won’t pick this engine up, even though I collect military livery engines.
Sam: "My first Yellow steam locomotive!" His 3D printed Gladstone: "Am I a joke to you?" ; _ ;
Stephenson’s Rocket: “…what about me?”
Sam's B2 Peckett: "You know I'm still here right?"
@@pclassproductions228It's Sam. Just take what he says with a bucket of salt.
Not a big fan of the gwr locos but this one looks great
Thanks Alex, I love it too! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
As someone else commented the livery is much too light . There are many photos of this loco at Didcot.
A really nice model. So many cool features. I believe that the colour is quite accurate for a desert train. It is the same colour as Rommel's Afrika Korps. (Sand is sand in ww1 or ww2.) But would they really have painted the buffer beams bright red making it stand out for miles around and a target for roving biplanes. Hmm.. PS - I tried to find pictures in google images but of course there were no colour photos in ww1. Lots of pictures of soldiers in pith helmets in the Palestinian and Egyptian campaigns. Cheers :-)
Karki or Khaki, referring to the color ?
As a LEGO train builder and model train fan that khaki livery looks like light tan instead
goodvid
Niiiiice
Really nice loco here - but imho it's too light. Also, I'm having some problems with my 3d printer, can I email you and you take a look in the stream tomorrow?
It sure is very light - I wouldn't be surprised! Yeah sure I can try! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cool
Thanks Alex!
Given the colour of the engine, I think this should be renamed ROD Stewart. 😂
Dapol made an error on the packaging. The packaging says 6300, but the loco is a 4300. This is more specifically an error because the GWR never had a 6300 class.
But the GWR did have mogals numbered in the 63XX range….. Thing is because the 43XX was built in a number of batches many years apart and more importantly had incorporated some differences between some builds they were actually given several number ranges. 4300-4399 (which is where the 43XX comes from) 5300-5399 6300-6399 (sometimes referred to as the 63XX class) 7300-7321 9300-9319 (Sometimes referred to as the 93XX class) Thus if the loco is from the 63XX number range then it might well be referred to as the 63XX class in some circles even though overall all the above locos were supposedly 43XX locos.
@@philkeller4170 The GWR always numbered their classes after the first batch: hence the Castles were always the '4073 Class', - even when produced in BR days as the last batch was.
Woulda HM7000 decoder fit in there?
I don't believe so unfortunately - at least not the batch that I tried as they were too large! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Really stupid question but what does the ROD stand for ?
According to Wikipedia: "The Railway Operating Division (ROD) was a division of the Royal Engineers formed in 1915 to operate railways in the many theatres of the First World War. It was largely composed of railway employees and operated both standard gauge and narrow gauge railways." 👍
It took about 5 minutes in when I realized he was saying khaki and not car-key
I’ve got a new batch GWR Mogul, Sam, and I am seeing exactly the same performance so I reckon Dapol really have made some great changes here 😀
Some folks might say 'Pastel Yellow'...but my artist's eyes say "...more 'Buff' or 'Cream'..."
Nice. I bet that livery got dirty quickly
