Dollhouse Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hey girl, open the walls
Play with your dolls
We'll be a perfect family
When you walk away is when we really play
You don't hear me when I say
"Mom, please wake up
Dad's with a slut
And your son is smoking cannabis"
[Pre-Chorus]
No one ever listens
This wallpaper glistens
Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen
[Chorus]
Places, places
Get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
[Post-Chorus]
D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees
D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E, I see things that nobody else sees
[Verse 2]
Hey girl, look at my mom
She's got it going on
Ha, you're blinded by her jewelry
When you turn your back
She pulls out a flask
And forgets his infidelity
Uh oh, she's coming to the attic, plastic
Go back to being plastic
[Pre-Chorus]
No one ever listens
This wallpaper glistens
One day they'll see what goes down in the kitchen
[Chorus]
Places, places
Get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
[Post-Chorus]
D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees
D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E, I see things that nobody else sees
[Breakdown]
Hey girl (Hey girl)
Hey girl, open your walls
Play with your dolls
We'll be a perfect family
[Chorus]
Places, places
Get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
[Post-Chorus]

  • Honestly this song hits so hard. Never understood why my mom would cry in her room alone because I grew up without a father. Later learned he left her after hearing she was expecting me, leaving her with little money. She got a new boyfriend around almost 4 years ago now. Didn’t think much of the fights at first, but they became so frequent I began to expect the fights and cry when they raised their voices at each other. Over time however I began to react little or not at all to their fights, even thought they could get extremely cruel with each other. There have been 2-3 times where these fights have caused me panic attacks, and recently they had two major fights that caused extreme mental damage on me. There were threats, insults, emotional damage, and breaking objects. I got so worried I gathered multiple items in my room to use as protection incase I needed to go downstairs in interfere (reminder both fights were at night while I was trying to sleep, both in school nights). They have since apologized to each other but i feel so uncomfortable when they are around one another. Every time I’m attempting to sleep, if they turn on a show with adult having conversations, especially a woman and a man arguing, I begin to tremble. I’m not going to go into details with the “brothers smoking cannabis” but I have someone in my life who does this I consider myself close to. I never get a good sleep because of the fighting, because I now expect them to fight at that time of the night. Honestly wish I could have just grown up a bit happier because it’s beginning to affect my grades in school, which my mother would be upset about.

  • This song really helped me through a breakdown. It sucks that everyone's always saying, "Your parents are perfect," "You're so lucky," "Think of the kids with abusive parents," but they don't know them like I do. Sometimes our parents can hurt us so much without even trying. Especially when they shelter you for so long that when they can't anymore, reality hits you like a truck.

  • A few years ago my life was actually like this. I had a younger step brother (3 years younger) A step mother And I still have my mum and my dad but the step family are out of our lives now. My dad is an alcoholic but my step mum who we will call E wasn't supportive of him being sober. Instead of supporting, she would pressure him which doesn't help. He always said he can be around alcohol but she would pressure him into drinking 0% alcohol beers, then into 0.1%, you get the picture and would blame him after he ends up drinking again. Usually, they would have their fights in the kitchen My step brother wasn't good either, he would hit me and I couldn't do anything back because "he's an angel! Stop lying" and said some weird remarks like every girl wanting him and abt marrying me and stuff after even after I told him he was being weird and to stop. Also right, after I was locked in my room for God knows what, probably some fight I had with my step brother E told me I have to help her raise my step brother, I was 9-10! My mental health plummeted, and I was told to "at least pretend like you're happy, don't be selfish" So you know, put on your doll faces. From the outside, my friends thought my life was great, easy going parents, good test scores and a "funny brother" Thanks for listening to my ranting

We founded schools, built charities, raised neighborhoods up from the ground, basically built our city. Our picture was always in local magazines and news papers. • This gives me Coraline vibes. The beginning makes me think of a girl who lives in a messed-up family, so she literally creates a whole new world for herself in her dollhouse to help her cope. She basically lives with the dolls in her mind, her "other family" like Coraline. They are sweet and caring. But as she gets older, she becomes corrupted and so does her play. In time, the family that she wanted to be sweet and nice in the dollhouse turn evil. She doesn't want that, so she kills them and is horrified at what she has done. Instead of protecting that little family in the dollhouse, she corrupts them. That got dark really fast.

  • Melanie Martinez, thank you so much for this song. The melody, the sound. Everything down to the lyrics, the meaning behind them and the spelling out of the song title is spot on and so perfectly written and well executed in its entirety. We may act like we’re perfect and that like our respected family situations are far better than others, but we would be kidding ourselves to think that we got it going on with a picture perfect life. What people see taken in the pictures - the pretty/presentable outfits, the smiles, happy mom/dad and sister/brother - are all not what they seem to be in the grand scheme of things. The brother has turned to drugs and will be prone to becoming obstinate. The sister has misgivings about her drunken mom being a pushover to her philandering, cheating adulterer of a father and is little by little broken up by the sight of her families wrongdoings. No one sees the ugly side since we make out that we’re perfect, we must dress nicely and put on our doll faces. Inside our dollhouses we see things that nobody until the day they look through the curtains. This is what I feel when I listen and think about this song. Melanie’s a genius.

  • I can relate to this in someway. When I was 8 I was put into care and sent to live with a woman who was really respected in her community. She'd treat me really nice in public or when people were around, but would yell at me for small things and belittle me whenever we were alone. She also refused to believe people suggesting I was autistic, at one point saying if I was she would have gotten rid of me and left me to be homeless. She would also talk about my parents to guilt trip me, with phrases like "I can see why your parents treated you like they did, if you act like that" If I disagreed with something she said or, "you're just like your parents" if I made a mistake, even though she had never spoken to them. She led me to having suicidal thoughts for a while. I don't live with her now, and am definitely alot happier! sorry for venting
